Abs system failed-it starts to kick in, then releases, sent us into intersection and near misses with cars-paid to have brakes replaced, didn't correct the problem (told it must be a problem with abs computer system); wipers occasionally begin slowing and work intermittently; differential was out when we purchased the car and we had to pay for the parts, appears to be happening again 2 years later.

These brakes do not act properly - when travelling on the freeway the brakes shudder when applied and they often lock and make a yawning sound.
01/01/1994 | |||
Anti-lock brake system has locked up repeatedly since purchase (on average, approximately once every two weeks). we've explained the problem to the dealer's service department, but have been told that there's no problem. lock-up occurs most frequently when, during light braking, the vehicle travels over a bump (e.g., rough pavement, manhole cover). lock-up also has occurred during medium to heavy braking on wet/slippery surfaces. the vehicle appears to think that the wheel is slipping and, instead of pulsing, just stops responding to the brake pedal for as much as 2-3 seconds. i read that the small gm suv's are being recalled for similar-sounding problems, but was disappointed to see that the investigation is still underway for suburbans and full-size pickup trucks.

Brakes failed when tried to stop at traffic light.--- wiper would stop for no reason and sometime would ot start, dealer said the problem was the circuit board that was on a g.m. recall list for 1994 suburbans but our unit vin no was not included, i contacted g.m. on the phone and they also refused to repair, i purchase the replacepent board from the dealer and the wiper works ok, i beleive g.m. owes me for the repair.

Brake system releases after application in panic stop situations. from the number of other complaints of this nature i am very surprised that no recall has been ordered on this problem. this is a serious safety problem that could cause serious injuries. the dealers in the houston area say nothing is wrong with the brake system and it is functioning as designed. this is a poor excuse. i would rather have a non-abs brake system than the current system on the vehicle. please do something about this.

I have had two issues with this vehicle: 1. windsheild wiper intermittent failure. this started to happen after the warranty period expired. i was informed by a chevrolet dealer that the recall(s) issued that match this behavior exactly do not apply to my vehicle. i believe the recall should include my 1994 chev. suburban c-1500 vehicle, as it clearly demonstrates this exact intermittent behavior. beyond inquiring recently with my local dealer, nothing has been done to correct this issue. 2. poor abs brake performance. this symptom has existed since the vehicle was new. i complained several times, but no problems were found at the time of complaints at the dealership. i noticed that there was a recall associated with this symptom, but i have not yet inquired with my local dealership to see if the issue can be corrected. i have had several near misses when having to stop suddenly and almost hitting the vehicle in front of me due to poor abs performance and increased stopping distance.*ak

I am experiencing trouble with the anti-lock brakes. today i was attempting to stop at a yellow light and the brakes stop about half way, make a strange noise and i fail to stop. this has happened to me many times. the previous owner had the same problem. this frightens me every time it occurs. i am scared of rear ending someone. you never know when it will occur, wet or dry weather makes no difference. if i am attempting to stop on gravel the same thing happens, the car just slides out into the road. brakesworked on several times but to no avail. the recall notice was only cosmetic and did not correct the problem. i explained exactly what was wrong. i have read many reviews on the internet and people are having the same problem. one woman said her brakes lock up and groan also. another ,man rear ended someone. these brakes are deadly and i need help. i paid my last bank payment today and would like to keep the vehicle. i could never sell it to someone with faulty brakes. thank you for taking my report. sharon pendarvis slp39@yahoo.com sorry about some of the spelling the program would you are using would not work properly.

These 3 cases of an abs failure occurred on damp roads. two cases involved the right front tires being over leaves on the road when brakes were applied. all the cases involved trying to stop at a stop sign. normal pressure(not a panic stop) was applied tobrakes, and all 3 cases were at a speed of 5mph or less. when the abs system kicked in, the car basically would not stop within any reasonable distance. we have had problems with this abs system(kelsey-hayes) ever since we purchased vehicle in 1994. the problem is that this system does not work!!!! if the abs ever kicks in, you are in trouble. we have had only 1 accident since 1994(caused by the abs), but have had numerous near-misses. i have even looked into disconnecting the abs, but there is siome interlocking of the abs to the transmission or other systems that prevent you from doing that. i have talked to the dealers, manufaturer, and the nthsa. the dealers and the manufacturers are not going to do anything about it because it would involve replacing the whole kelsey-hayes system not just a modification.*ak

In dry road conditions on i-5 northbound we noticed that traffic was stopping ahead of us and applied brakes. we had already slowed to approx 50mph before braking . the vehicle nose dipped as we slowed to stop, then the anti lock mech released the base brakes and we were thrown upright as we continued forward into the car ahead of us after a considerable distance during which time we were aware that we were not being slowed by the anti- lock system. we had noticed that the brakes had an unusual stopping distance in the past, but believed that this was normal as we were told by our dealer. the brakes had recently been serviced in december. there is no question that we should have had ample distance for any properly working brake system to stop us in time. *ak

Abs brake system has activated and created a dangerous skid on at least 6 occasions. i am an excellent driver and used avoidance manoveurs twice to avoid collisions. there seems to be two consistent conditions that cause the activation of the abs /skidding...bumpy roads(i have skidded both on dry railroad crossings and dry unpaved mountain roads) and, second, rainy paved surfaces that would not ordinarily induce a skid. wet white painted lines at intersections are major contributors. what i cant understand is that as of 01/04/2000, you already have 463!!! reports on your website of this vehicle/year/system failure and yet, no recall. *ak

Under panic stops, the brakes act like antibrakes not anti-lock brakes. my son and i both have identical 1994 suburbans and we both share the same problem of poor braking, when wet or under panic situations. my son had a accident with mine when the brakes wouldn't stop him in time to avoid a collision, resulting in major damage. i have spoken to numerous suburban owners, and they all say the same thing. the brakes are scary, especially with such heavy vehicle. i spoke to chevrolet and they told me they are aware of brake problems, but don't know how to fix it yet, that a national recall might come next year. i think something this drastic should have a priority to the public.

Seat belt retraction system does not work on driver seat, and occasionally fails on the passenger side. the part that fails is the return of the shoulder belt. leaving the shoulder belt loose and of little value. on the front passenger side, the shoulder harness sometimes fails to tighten up but then during the ride it will make a zipping sound and retract and tighten to a proper fit. as for the abs, they kick in at times when not needed, and it is difficult to tell, but seems as if the brakes do not grab as they might. example, we have some sandy areas on our gravel road, and if i touch the brakes the abs sometimes kicks in, and does not let up when i let off the brake. *ak

Windshield wipers continuously started and stopped, eventually stopping altogether while driving in the rain. wiper motor and circuit board were replaced at owner cost to resolve the problem. activation of antilock brakes produce vehicle surges and/or greatly increased stopping distances and/or do not stop vehicle. problem has persisted since the vehicle was purchased new in 1993. also, on descents of muddy, snowy and/or rocky roads, antilock brakes while activated increase speed of vehicle and will not the stop vehicle unless the antilock feature is deactivated by releasing and then depressing the brake pedal. problem occurs at all speeds (3mph through highway speeds). normal braking is ok. brake pads have been replaced at normal intervals and front rotors have also been relaced - neither replacement corrected or improved the antilock braking system's operation or responsiveness. *ak

The brakes are generally defecttive. i have been in several emergency and non-emergency situations where the brakes have not performed satisfactorily. on one occasion, i nearly lost control on the freeway. on another, on a wet street at low speed, i partially entered an intersection through a red light because the brakes would keep releasing. with respect to the accident noted above, i was on a freeway access road going about 45mph when traffic unexpectedly came to a halt, and i, along with most of the other drivers, had to jump on the brakes hard. i was braking well and stopping short of the vehicle in front of me, but when the brake pedal pressure increased to the point of engaging the anti-lock system, the brakes actually released causing me to lunge forward into the vehicle in front of me. although many cars were scrambling to stop, mine was the only accident. i am an experienced driver and i consider myself a good and safe driver. i did not release the brakes--i know how anti-locks work and i know how to use them. my other car has anti-lock brakes, so i also know what it's like to have anti-lock brakes that work well. i raised hell at the dealership and had the service manager and their head brake guru test the brakes. they claimed they were fine and working properly. they are wrong. i recently read that the ntsb has an open long-term investigation into these brakes, so i thought i would put in my two cents to help you. i bought a defective product as far as i'm concerned. i've lost money on collision repairs and insurance. i'm at risk every day and i know it. i'm at your disposal should you have any questions or need further information. thanks.

I have had similar instances in the past, without an incident occuring. the problem seems to be insufficient brake power to stop the vehicle adequately. when the brake pedal is depressed in an emergency condition, the abs system activates, but the stopping distance is very long. this abs reacts very different than any other i have experienced. the stopping power is actually very diminished with the abs activated than when it is not activated. once the abs comes into play, the vehicle feels like it speeds up. i realize that the abs is supposed to keep the wheels from locking up and that one should hold a constant pressure on the brake pedal rather than pumping the brakes. however, in dry conditions, i can stop the vehicle quicker and in a shorter distance if i do not allow the to abs activate. of course one does not have that choice in a panic stop situation. you must be able to rely on the systems engineered into the vehicle. i recently read the technical information on the 2000 suburban and i am disappointed that gm did not provide the same 4 wheel disc brake system introduced in the '99 pick up models. the accident i recently experienced could have been avoided had the braking system operated as it should have.

Occasionaly when coming to a stop during a contact with wet roadway the abs system seems to be engaging in a manner that is erratic and dramatic. when coming to a stop, just as total stopping is about to occur a violent pulsing of the brakes occurs such that the feeling of being rear-ended takes place. this will continue for anywhere from 3 to 5 braking incindents in a row and then abrubtly stop. by the time i get to a dealer the situation is unduplicatable. i have read about problems with other abs systems on the chevy line of suv's and was wondering if this is similar to those complaints. it is always wet roadway when it happens, but not necessarily a cold vehicle (as in first use of the day). it truly feels like someone just hit you from behind in the way the vehicle lurches as it comes to a full stop at light or stop sign. also tends to only happen when braking from slow, 40 mph or less, speeds.

The abs brakes system on the 1994 suburban was unreliable since the first month after original purchase. a typical scenario is coming to a stop at a stop sign or stoplight. the brakes occassionally start pulsing, allowing the vehicle to travel an extra distance before stopping. this has resulted in near misses where we almost rear-ended other vehicles and on other occassions came to a stop in the intersection. also, railroad tracks are particularly hazardous with the suburban abs.

Both my wife and i have experienced problem with the brakes on our 1994 surburban. the situation has ocurred on dry pavement and i believe can not be attributed to either of us applying the brakes to hard or pumping the brakes. after applying the brakes it appears that the brakes lock and then release. the release (or failure)of the brakes extends the stopping distance. in addition i have noticed difficulty in steering when this occurs. i am submitting this report because of the recent publicity regarding the anti-lock brakes and the continued investigation of surburbans

Here is an excerp of the letter i gave my dealership regarding abs potential problems on 2 oct 1995. dealership said brakes were fine. on 27 september, while i was braking to stop at a traffic light, my suburban hit a bump. the brakes immediately changed. instead of the normal stopping, it felt like the abs kicked in and i could feel the hear and feel the characteristic pedal vibration. worst of all, most of the braking force was gone. the abs should not have kicked in since this was not a panic stop or a wheel lock up situation. i kept the brake pedal depressed and within one or two seconds the abs turned off and normal braking resumed.. i know what normal abs functioning feels like since i have tested them under a controlled panic stop situation. this is the second time this failure has happened to me under a normal braking situation. i dismissed the first event as a freak occurrence until my wife rear ended a truck in front of her on 21 september, while in slow moving traffic. she explained that she should have been able to stop in time to avoid the collision but could not. there were no injuries-only minor damage to our suburban and the truck. this condition may have contributed to that accident. *ak

Both incidents were almost identical. i was traveling approximately 35 miles per hour or less and had the need to stop quickly due to other vehicles in front of me. when i applied the brakes it felt like they were not working and the pedal went to the floor. there was no pulsing of the brakes, just a noise that sounded like a loud groan. i did not pump the pedal, i just applied harder and harder pressure until the pedal was on the floor, and the suburban continued to almost freewheel into the back of vehicle in front of me. luckily no one has been seriously injured yet. but if a remedy is not found i am sure it is just a matter of time until a child runs out from behind a parked car, and it won't just be property damage. i took my suburban to grey chevrolet to have them check out the brakes, and they said all that all they could find was that the master cylinder was overfull, and brought the level down to where it should be. the brakes do not fail all the time, it is intermittent. due to that a problem is hard to define. *ak

Abs engaged during moderate braking, causing vehicle to go into a coast situation resulting in a rear-end collision with vehicle ahead. witness 1 verified brake lights came on, but vehicle was not stopping. witness 2 verified hearing abs engage, but also stated vehicle was not stopping. problem has occurred several times previously (not resulting in accidents), but dealer has not been able to locate a problem. vehicle was towed to dealer after accident, at insurance company request, but again, no problem was found. have asked for gmc service rep. to inspect vehicle. dealer committed to contact factory rep. and has stated factory rep. will contact us this week to drive vehicle for extended period. currently waiting to hear from factory rep., but dealer does not expect him to find any problem. it is our opinion that vehicle is unsafe to operate due to the randomness of applying brakes and having vehicle go into coast mode. due to number of times the vehicle has been returned to dealer for this problem and the fact that it finally resulted in an accident with injuries, we feel that gmc should take some responsibility. first, necessary repairs should be made to make the vehicle safe. second, gmc has a financial responsibility to compensate for damages caused by the malfunction of the factory equipment. research into this situation has found information indicating gmc is well aware of the problem and that this is not an isolated incident.

When the problem originally started about 2 yrs ago, we ignored it. then, when it became clear that it wasn't an isolated incident, we took the vehicle to a local chevrolet dealership (not the selling dealership). during a test drive, the event occurred, and the service representative said that this was normal, and that other similar makes did the samething. the event that happens is that when pressure is applied to the brakes, there is a grinding sound, and the brakes don't take. the vehicle continues along its course, not slowing appreciably for a while. the brakes will eventually grab, and then the vehicle stops. the service rep said we just needed to be careful when we drive.

*ak
