 1994 chevrolet suburban wiper motors fail and work intermittently and stop while driving creating very dangerous conditions. is listed as recall on nhtsa campaign id number 03v15900 and 98v150001 on your web site. we called chevrolet on 800-222-1020 and were told this is not a recall item after seven years. the recall was not issued until 07/01/98 and 04/28/03 - that makes the recall notice past the seven year chevrolet policy.

 The windshield wipers began to work intermittently, usually not at all (during rain, go figure). if the switch was turned on and you pulled on the arm of the wiper, they would sometimes begin to function. i learned of a recall for this problem: visual systems:windshield wiper and washer nhtsa campaign id number: 98v15000, campaign #: 98043. i took the vehicle to the listed dealer for the defect of a bad circuit board to be corrected. i was told that the problem that they found with the wipers, the same problem as the recall, would not be covered under the recall. this was on 1-3-01, and i had to pay $ 95.67 for the repair, which should have been covered as dictated by the recall. thank you in advance. john jacob

 The 1994 suburbans had a recall #98v150000 for the problem of the wiper motor module becoming inoperable. i took mine in for the repair as my wipers were not working and was told that the vin# for my vehicle was outside the covered range, so i would have to pay the $86.96 to repair it. obviously, the vin range should be expanded as the problem is effecting other vehicles.

 My vehicle is subject to nhtsa campaign 98v150001 and/or 98v150000. chevrolet is maintaining that my vehicle has already been fixed, although that is not the case. while this may be a rare snafu, it may be part of a pattern of conduct. interestingly, chevrolet has said that if i can produce the records that demonstrate that the work has already been done, they will do the work again. (since the work has never been done, i obviously cannot meet this requirement.) from chevrolet's perspective, i can have the work done twice if i have a record of it having been done once, but i cannot have it done at all if they have a record that it was done previously, but i have no such record. do they think they can win with this logic? does nhtsa monitor the implementation of these recalls? do you know that this is gm's policy?

 Dealer advised that my car was manufacturered at the jainsville wi plant, but that it was made 100,000 cars before the current recall began. i have tried in the spring to get my wipers repaired and was told by an independent service station that what isn't broken can't be fixed (the problem is intermittent and occurs without warning or consistency). the dealer refuses to fix this under the current recall as they won't be reimbursed for work done. this is a real problem for me and i am sure that other suburban owner are experiencing this same problem but are not covered by the recall. please advise as to how to proceed. thank you.

 I contacted the dealer on 01-22-99 to evaluate this recurring problem and was informed of a product recall. they checked the vin, but my vehicle was excluded from the recall. i called gm customer service line, (michelle holden and renee johnson) was informed that this vehicle simply wasn't included in the recall since the recall was limited to specific models. the problem isn't specific models, it is a specific part number. the pulse module (part#12463017) is defective. this defective pulse module should be recalled instead of allowing gm to limit the recall to specific models of vehicles. the technician i spoke with informed me that s-10 models, various pickups as well as suburbans are having the same problem with wipers acting erratic. the current recall is limited to post 1994 models, and i personally know of another vehicle (1993 pickup) that had the same problem. i believe the faulty pulse module should be recalled across the board, which will cover more than those few vehicle models included in the recall. thank you

 Chevrolet customer service told me that many gm trucks and sport utilities built from 1994 through 1996 were recalled due to potential wiper system failure due to cracked solder joints in the wiper system. when i experienced the failure of the system, i promptly took the vehicle to the nearest dealer for repair. i was told, however, that their computer system indicated that my vehicle was not covered by the recall, even though i experienced the same problem that was covered by the recall. i believe a mistake was made in identification of all vins affected by the problem and that my vehicle should have been included. the estimated cost of repair, at my expense, is $102.

 I have had two issues with this vehicle: 1. windsheild wiper intermittent failure. this started to happen after the warranty period expired. i was informed by a chevrolet dealer that the recall(s) issued that match this behavior exactly do not apply to my vehicle. i believe the recall should include my 1994 chev. suburban c-1500 vehicle, as it clearly demonstrates this exact intermittent behavior. beyond inquiring recently with my local dealer, nothing has been done to correct this issue. 2. poor abs brake performance. this symptom has existed since the vehicle was new. i complained several times, but no problems were found at the time of complaints at the dealership. i noticed that there was a recall associated with this symptom, but i have not yet inquired with my local dealership to see if the issue can be corrected. i have had several near misses when having to stop suddenly and almost hitting the vehicle in front of me due to poor abs performance and increased stopping distance.*ak

 Recall number: 98v150001 my 1994 chevy suburban is not in the vin numbers covered by the recall although it was made at same plant in same year as others covered. i had to pay for exact repair as listed in recall. dealer service tech. told me that they, have done at least 100 of these repairs on model years that are in the recall, but maybe 30 of those have actually been covered by the recall. the others have had to pay for the repair themselves just like you. it's not that the repair was overly expensive, but it seems that if there is a recall that covers five years of cars more than 30% of the repairs should be included in the covered vin numbers. i believe that the number of vehicles that should be covered by this recall should be greatly increased. *la

 The windshield wipers work intermittently. the wiper moter can be heard trying to engage the wipers, but fails to do so. if the car is dry prior to rain, the wipers sometimes will work. if the car is out and is wet, the wipers will not work. the wipers will sometimes fail once in use. i have contacted chevrolet, to which they said they can't include the car in the recall although it seems to be the same problem. obviously, this is a safety hazard and should be considered in the recall. we took delivery of the car on april 29, 1994.*ak

 Windshield wiper delay circuit board failed. this vehicle was made on jan 12, 1994, therefore it was not subject to the recall campaign #98v150001, and the dealer refused to repair the board as part of the recall. i replaced the board myself. the old part is available for inspection by an nhtsa-appointed engineer, if you desire. since it is obvious that this condition exists for more than the limited dates mentioned in the recall, it is imperative that you expand the campaign to include all affected vehicles. you have the ability to save lives. please do not take it lightly. this is obviously a bigger problem than you originally thought - see the following complaints - odi #s: 735172 734175 864283 862133 844514 711482 839471 838820 838386 848120 707007 843175 838540 707212 830912 841155 543656 830459 707179 713640 479355 516020. *ak

 Nhtsa campaign id #98v150001 covers this failure for suburban's manufactured shortly after my suburban was manufactured. the component that failed is the same as the one described in #98v150001. this situation nearly caused an accident and should be corrected by the manufacturer regardless of the date of manufacturer. it is a saftey hazzard that could lead to loss of life.

 Windshield wipers continuously started and stopped, eventually stopping altogether while driving in the rain. wiper motor and circuit board were replaced at owner cost to resolve the problem. activation of antilock brakes produce vehicle surges and/or greatly increased stopping distances and/or do not stop vehicle. problem has persisted since the vehicle was purchased new in 1993. also, on descents of muddy, snowy and/or rocky roads, antilock brakes while activated increase speed of vehicle and will not the stop vehicle unless the antilock feature is deactivated by releasing and then depressing the brake pedal. problem occurs at all speeds (3mph through highway speeds). normal braking is ok. brake pads have been replaced at normal intervals and front rotors have also been relaced - neither replacement corrected or improved the antilock braking system's operation or responsiveness. *ak

 Windshield wipers work than stop. i wiggle wire connector to motor than they will work for a short period. if i am driving down the road, they will stop working and sometimes start working again. i found out that 1994 suburban 4x4 are not on the recall list for the card that has a faulty solder. i have also replaced my drivers side caliper 4 times since purchasing the vehicle in january 2003. i also replaced the brake hose on the drivers side. the calipers seemed to get stuck and would not release. *jb
