While driving through the neighborhood at 35 mph, the posted speed, we lost brake control of the vehicle when the service brake was applied approaching an intersection with a stop sign. we were unable to stop the vehicle which entered the intersection and passed all of the way through it. the brake pedal was to the floor and not working properly. fortunately for all there were no other vehicles ( or pedestrians) in this intersection as we would have certainly hit them. it appears the brake line(s) on the k2500 suburban have rusted through in an area that is difficult to see where they go through the frame and blew out at this critical moment. the dealer is unwilling to take any responsibility for the repair as the vehicle is out of factory warranty. when we purchased the vehicle they did not tell us the brakes could only be relied upon for the time the truck is under warranty. this could have been a serious, possibly deadly outcome since we tow a trailer with the truck on the highway. i understand this is actually a common occurrence with these chevrolet and gmc trucks. why is there no recall given the potential deadly possibilities? toyota was in the news about their unexpected acceleration issue but we have heard nothing about this unexpected loss of braking issue? why is that? is not being able to stop not a problem for the nhtsa?

Driving from work-snowy/icy conditions. smelled a strange odor in vehicle going from i-270s to i-370w ~ 1/4 mile from ramp. traffic moderate. traveling 45 mph i tapped brakes, they went all way to floor. turned off electrical equipment. used engine braking selecting 3-2-1 to slow vehicle. vehicle slowed, applied emergency brake - drove to brake down lane. vehicle stopped-white smoke coming around edges of hood. lower portion of windshield had couple of heat discoloration marks about 1/4 size of a penny in the middle lower portion. air bag light came on. dash did not feel hot, nor the instrument panel - no smoke inside vehicle. hood would not open by hood release. power windows worked. egressed vehicle and driver sdie air bag inflated. called 911 awaited fire/polcie dept. opened driver's and passenger doors. flames coming from steering column where it enters fire wall. flames underneath vehicle from engine near skid plate/transfer case. used small fire extinguisher on flames in cabin and under vehicle to no avail. front driver's side from center console to driver's side door melted away at about 45 deg angle from top to bottom of console. inside engine the thydraulic drive unit and barke master cyclinder had melted. significant burn damage from fire in engine. vehicle-total loss. very fortunate to recognize bad smell, id brake malfunction, use engine braking to control vehicle; use emergency braking to stop - moderate traffic. minimized potential hazard to single vehicle-no injuries or fatalities. *jb

The battery leaked/sprayed acid onto the engine and right front side components of the suburban. the air bag sensor had to be replaced, but the rest of the components were just cleaned off (this included brake hydraulic cables and lines, brakes, air conditioning hoses, radiator, etc.). the dealer/manufacturer said they don't cover the battery because it is not made by them althought i think the company is owned by them. we had to buy a new battery and pay for all the damage to the car and still don't know what the long term affects of this corrosive acid will be. it left a huge orange puddle in our garage floor which we can't get rid of. we took video and pictures of the damage to the car, battery and garage. the cracked front transaxle casing was only diagnosed after they had replaced the seal on the front axle twice since it was always leaking fluid. the rear differential had the seal replaced 2 or 3 times but it still leaks. the fuel pumped failed on our car leaving us stranded. we were told that the truck needs to keep a 1/4 tank of gas at all times in the tank so that this does not happen. the air conditioner has never really worked well on this model, it appears that it is undersized to handle the thermal load. we also had to have the spot welds on the door jams filed because many sharp burrs existed which were a safety hazard.*ak

Recently we had the vehicle serviced at a independant service (l&l automotive), in the past the vehicle has been serviced a chevrolet dealership. l&l states on their invoice found rear brake shoes did not match the drums, it appears that the incorrect rear differential was installed from the facotry, we put drums on that matched the rear shoes/axle. we have continually taken this vehicle to a authroized chevy dealer because we had problems with brakes. our invoices indicate that at 8947 miles on 7/26/96 we first complained, at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes (warranty), at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes, at 20,462 miles on 12/31/96 burt resurfaced rear brake drums (did not detect or tell us of any problems with the drums) and suggested the front brakes needed to be replaced again soon, at 21,575 miles burt replaced front brakes (we paid), at 30,799 miles on 5/29/97 burt replaced front brakes. this is just a sample and shows the problems we attempted to correct with the braking while the vehicle was under warranty. chevrolet has denied us any responsibility because it is out of warranty, even if the vehicle was incorrect from the factory and even if their authorized dealer had 5 times to detect the problem while still under warranty. i feel that it is their responsibility and that the car is still unsafe. the drums/shoes/differential do not fit the vehicle that we bought. an increase safety problem is we have 2 disabled children, one is classified through the school district as traumatic brain injury (unrelated to an auto. accident). we must have a vehicle that has the strength the carry and stop this 3/4 ton vehicle, which for 82,000 miles has been stopping mainly by front braking. i had to apolized to my wife for the last 3 years on blaming her driving on the brakes! since putting smaller drums to fit the shoes, i do not feel safe in driving this vehicle with my family and especialy pulling our boat or horse trailer.

I contacted chevrolet's customer assistance center several time but did not receive any satisfaction. i contend that a critical safety component such as the break booster should not fail during the normal life of the vehicle. several complaints during the warranty period were made about the pedal being soft. i was told this breaks were ok. i kept the part and offered to send to chevrolet to determine if was defective. my contention is that if a part is defective it should be replaced regardless of the warranty. if it was not defective the part should be reengineered to provided a failure rate less than 10-6. someone could have been injured if the speed had been greater.
