Defect SummaryCertain trucks and sport utility vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wires connectors may overheat under certain operating conditions.
Consequence SummaryIf the ignition circuit wire is exposed, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. if sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause a 'service engine soon' light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostic routine. fuel vapor and in some cases liquid fuel may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. also if the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result.
Corrective SummaryDealers will remove the fuel tank, and remove the module reservoir assemblies from the tank, and install a new service kit free of charge. an interim letter to owners was mailed on may 25, 2005. the owners were re-notified on october 19, 2005, since parts are now availabe. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

PE04042GENERAL MOTORS CORP.05/03/200409/09/2004OVERHEATED FUEL PUMP WIRING05V155000
The fuel pump wiring and connector may overheat and melt a hole in the top of the fuel pump module.possible consequences include fuel tank leakage and engine stall with no restart.fourteen of the 20 complaints to odi allege fuel tank leakage, including one that reported that a fire department was called to the scene after a pool of gasoline was discovered beneath the vehicle.most of the odi complaints report incidents that occurred within the past year. according to gm, fuel leakage can occur in the subject vehicles if the heat is sufficient to melt a hole in the plastic connector large enough for liquid fuel to flow through.on-board emissions diagnostics may detect holes that are approximately 0.040 inches or more and set a service engine soon warning light.the connector position in the subject vehicles is below the fuel level when the tank is full.while gm does not know how much fuel could leak from a tank with a melted fuel pump connector, several consumers have reported significant leak events.engine stall can occur if:(1) a short occurs in the pump wiring (bare wire exposed by melted insulation shorts against a ground or ground wire) and the fuel pump relay fuse is blown; or (2) the vehicle runs out of fuel due to an inaccurate fuel gauge reading resulting from an electrical short between the fuel pump wiring and the level sensor wiring. gm's analysis of five assemblies returned from incident vehicles determined that the condition is caused by elevated resistance/ arcing at the mra undercover b cavity terminal of the four-way 150 metri-pak connector.gm attributes the high resistance and arcing to a depressed contact arm at the 150 metri-pak b cavity female terminal.gm is continuing its investigation to complete its root cause analysis. modular reservoir assemblies using the 150 metri-pak connectors were used by gm in several million c/k-series sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks from my 1997 through 2002, when gm released a metal mra cover and a 280 metri-pak connector in the subject vehicles.during pe04-042, odi collected information from gm concerning my 2000-2002 c/k suv's and pickup trucks.the subject vehicles comprise approximately 9 percent of production for those vehicles and about 39 percent of complaints to gm. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in gm c/k-series vehicles.
EA04026GENERAL MOTORS CORP.09/09/200408/02/2005OVERHEATED FUEL PUMP WIRING05V155000
In a letter dated april 14, 2005, general motors (gm) notified odi that it had identified a defect related to motor vehicle safety in approximately 316,508 model year (my) 2000-01 1500 series chevrolet suburban and gmc yukon xl vehicles (recall 05v-155).gm determined that some of these vehicles were equipped with fuel module reservoir assemblies (mras) that contain fuel pump wires and/or connectors that may overheat under certain operating conditions.according to gm, fuel pump wires that overheat may result in one or more conditions that present risks to motor vehicle safety:(1) fuel leakage from the mra pass-through connector if the overheating produces a hole in the plastic connector; (2) engine stall if wiring exposed by the overheating shorts to ground and causes the fuel pump fuse to blow; or (3) inaccurate fuel level readings if overheated wiring is shorted to the fuel level sender card.gm's analysis identified the cause of the overheated wiring as a high-resistance condition in the mra connector contacts due to fretting corrosion that may develop over time.gm determined that the corrosion is caused by movement between the contact surfaces and that such movement is primarily influenced by chassis and fuel tank virbration characteristics.gm's testing found that the fuel tank vibration characteristics of the recalled my 2000-01 1500-series vehicles were significantly greater than in other gm vehicles equipped with the same mra connectors.these vehicles had the highest rate of related fuel leak and stall complaints; and a recent survey conducted by gm found evidence of mra wiring over-heating in almost one-third of the 1500-series vehicles inspected. other vehicles equipped with the subject mra connector and evaluated during this investigation include approximately 33,000 my 2000-01 2500-series sububran and yukon xl vehicles, which fall within the scope of ea04-026, and peer populations of short wheelbase yukon and tahoe utility vehicles and full-size silverado and sierra pickup trucks. these vehicles are not included in recall 05v-155 for the following reasons:(1) these vehicles are equipped with fuel tanks with significantly less vibration at the mra interface than the recalled vehicles; (2) the potential for fuel leakage is substantially lower in the pickup trucks and short-wheelbase utility vehicles due to differences in fuel tank configuration and no incidents of fuel leakage due to overheated wiring were verified in these vehicles; (3) there there have been only three potentially related complaints of fuel leakage associated with the overheated wiring condition in the 2500-series long-wheelbase utility vehicles; and (4) no evidence of overheated wiring was found in the 2500-series suburban and yukon xl vehicles and pickup trucks inspected by gm in its vehicle survey efforts and the rate found in the short-wheelbase utilities was lower than the recalled vehicles by an order of magnitude. odi will continue to monitor the experience in the 2500 series my 2000-01 long-wheelbase utility vehicles.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists for the 2500 series vehicles.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by a change in circumstances.

While my carwas just sitting at a light and the moment i tried to pull off the car stalled as if it was not receiving any gas. it putted and then it stop in the middle of the street. while the car behind me was clearly not paying any attention i was rear-ended. the dealership stated it was due to my fuel pump. i just purchased my 2000 chevy suburban in oct. 2006. my question to is how long does the recall last? *ak

2000 chevrolet suburban. truck refused to start-would finally start, then stall immediately. took several tries to get truck running. took to dealer-$800 to install new fuel pump. 2 weeks later, same problem. back to dealer, new fuel filter (second in two months) and fuel injection cleaning. i researched internet and found that there is a problem with fuel pump. confronted dealership who then admitted that there is a problem with fuel pump--and that they have to replace 2 - 3 per week. *ak

Fuel leak with full tank on level ground. appears similar to defect summary ea04026. vehicle had had fuel sensor replaced 06/2002 at 36000 miles for sporadic fuel gage / temp gage failures. expect this is caused by the melted electrical terminals at pump module. possibly related to sensor replacement.*ak does not leak on level after driving 10 miles after fillup, but will leak if pointed down hill - very noticeable fuel leak. certainly a fire hazard. have talked with chevrolet 1-800-222-1020. they acknowledge the engineering analysis but will not authorize footing the bill for repairs.

I have had problems since day one on this suburban. most recently the two above. i checked the warranty work that was done on my suburban and it was over a page of claims. i just cannot remember the dates the items i checked occured. the fuel pump problem was long in the coming, they just didn't know what the problem was. i spent outside of warranty hundreds of dollars on the fuel system. this left us stranded 3 times! this last time cost me $765. today, the abs sytem died. they say it's going to cost me close to a $1000 to repair. i purchased the suburban because it was safe to carry my wife and 7 kids. so far, we have been stuck on the road, lost vacation time and just can't feel safe anymore. now i don't have brakes. thanks for letting me vent. kent dold

In 2004 i had a fuel system failure. a loud whining noise was coming from the fuel take area. all of a sudden i began having fuel flow problems. as i entered an intersection i had a fuel system failure which almost resulted in a vehicle collision. fortunately the other driver was able to avoid my stalled out vehicle. vehicle was towed to ase certified mechanic who replaced the fuel pump at 900+ cost. may 2006 i am now again noticing some fuel system problems like the ones before. after researching this website an observing the numerous complaints on fuel systems on 2000 surburban's something needs to be done. i can not afford another 900 dollar repair but will have to find some way to pay it. this should be a cost chevy needs to pay. it truly seems they have a problem with this vehicle. *jb

Dt: when driving at speeds of 65-70 mph the vehicle stalled while accelerating to pass another vehicle on the interstate. the vehicle operated at a reduced speed. the engine did not die, but with hesitation the speed dropped from 65- 35 mph. the consumer continued to press the gas pedal, and the engine coughed and shot back up again. the consumer pulled over on the shoulder to avoid a tractor trailer. the consumer received a consumer service bulletin alerting the issue of engine stalling. the consumer lost h letter and called gm, who said this would not be a recall until november. the consumer took the vehicle to a certified pep boys mechanic, who determined this was a fuel pump problem. the fuel pressure, test that showed a low fuel pressure level at an idle due to fuel pressure, dropped even more. they replaced the fuel pump. gm would not reimburse for corrections. since the fuel pump was replaced there have been no problems. *ak

My gas tank read at half tank when leaving my driveway.after approx 9 miles while driving on the i-80 wb frwy on the fast lane my vehicle(v) began to quickly decrease in power, the fuel lights, the service lights, and then all warning lights began to flash.the fueld tank read empty.my car was fully disabled within approx 40 seconds.i was able to react quickly and pullover on the side of the freeway on i-80 wb on barrett ave/san pablo ave.i called a relative for assistance who put in 5 gal of gas since the fuel warning light first flashed when the (v) began decreasing in power, the (v) would not start.it did not appear to be a battery/starter problem.i called a tow truck tow the (v) to my house and have my husband examine it since he is a master certified lexus diagnostic specialist.he said it may be the fuel pump, and was going to order the tools to repair it.i recalled receiving a letter about a fuel pump recall but could not locate the letter.i then did an internet research and called gm. i was told that my (v) vin number is not part of the recall,i strongly disagree because my vehicle duplicated the recall without being fully aware of the recall description. my vehicle has been maintained since it has been in my possession and the original owner serviced the car at dublin chevrolet in ca. this incidence could have led to a disaster for my 10 yr old daughter and i. i could have panicked and gotten stuck on the fast lane of the freeway with no power at all to my (v). we were stranded on the side of i-80 westbound freeway near barrett avenue/san pablo avenue exit for 2 hs until around midnight while waiting for a tow truck-my relative had to leave because of work, we were approached by 2 homeless while waiting for the tow truck; we were stranded in an unfavorable area of the freeway. i want my suburban's vin number included in their recall since it duplicated their recall description, and pay for all my towing costs.vehicle is disabled on my driveway.

While driving at high speed fuel pump went out on my 2000 chevrolet suburban which has 54.000 mi. it was softly recommeded the fuel filter be changed at 30,000. however the dealer and gm is aware of the fuel pump problem. the repair was $812.00 verses $34.oo for a fuel pump. the public should know that this could occur. many women w/children drive this vehicle. there should be a strong warning before lives are lost. but of course the dealership wouldn't profit as much if all the fuel filters were replaced. gm refuses to own up to the problem even though there have been many incidents, why else does the fuel filter last only 30,000 miles? i was told it was my fault by c&m chevrolet in san diego and gm, customer service. a stronger warning should take place instead of a soft suggestion to replace the fuel filter. so many women and children are use this vehicle. i know that other makes and models have a much better fuel pump life than the chevy suburban. is this a defect? i paid almost $40.000, i should have purchased a toyota. *ak

2000 chevrolet suburban traveling at 45 mph the engine stopped, message center said low oil pressure and another (forgotten) message. i shifted to neutral, cranked the engine but it wouldn't start. i coasted off the highway and stopped. i telephoned the dealer who said it was probably the fuel pump. the vehicle was towed to the dealer, the fuel pump, the fuses and the fuel filler rubber connector hose were replaced. the removed failed pump module had shorted wiring just under the mounting plate. the gray wire had almost one inch of its insulation at the top melted off the wire and left dangling. this bare wire apparently chafed one of the two purple wires about 1/2 inch from its top and the resultant contact caused a short and blew the fuse. i have enlarged photos of the damaged wiring in place. the dealer was exceptionally helpful and efficient in repairing the failure. i am concerned about the high number of failures of the pump in the suburbans and the unexpected engine failure in a critical situation can cause an accident and possible injury. *la

Consumer stated fuel gage was not working properly. sometimes when filling vehicle up, fuel gage showed empty. at other times when the vehicle was empty the fuel gauge showed full. also, it was hard to tell when vehicle needed fuel. consumer had spoken with other suburban owners and they were having the same problem. consumer felt this is was a design defect with these vehicles.*ak

Whenever brakes are in use vehicle can slow up, but fails to stop right away. stopping distance is increased. had hit a wall & a fence due to a lack of braking power. vehicle equipped with abs which was not the problem. brake pedal went to the floor. also, parking brake went to floor. taken vehicle to dealership at least 6 or 7 times. now pursuing the lemon law. battery failed. vehicle stalled. exhaust leaks and is loud. air comes through the center vent when the floor control is on. 4-wheel drive would not engage due to a short in the module. fuel sending unit was replaced. *ak *slc
