Defect SummaryOn certain pickup trucks equipped with an 8.1l v8 engine, the crankshaft position can operate intermittently or fail completely. if the sensor operates intermittently, the ses light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. the engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool down period.
Consequence SummaryIf the sensor becomes completely inoperative, the engine will quit running and will not re-start. either of these failures can increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor free of charge. the recall began on december 18, 2007. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

PE06016GENERAL MOTORS CORP.05/04/200609/14/2006CRANK POSITION SENSOR FAILURE - STALL
The office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe06-016) on may 4, 2006 based on eleven vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and early warning (ewr) data alleging sudden engine shutdown while driving as a result of crank position sensor failures in my 2001-2002 general motors c/k platform vehicles equipped with 8.1l engines.in response to an information request letter sent by odi, general motors (gm) provided owner complaint information, field reports and warranty claim data based on a population of 108,338 vehicles. the data was categorized by engine stalls while driving, engine stalls with an unknown driving condition, no start conditions and claims where it was indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.general motor's response included 1,213 owner complaints and field reports of which 289 were categorized as engine stalls while driving allegedly caused by crank position sensor failures. general motors also submitted warranty claims from its regular warranty (5 years/50,000 miles) and from its extended warranty database. from the regular warranty database there were 3,140 claims of crank position sensor replacement of which 147 claims were from consumers alleging engine stall while driving.gm stated that 2,841 of the claims were indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.from its extended warranty database, gm submitted 1,561 claims of crank position sensor failure that it also stated were indeterminate as to whether an engine stall occurred while driving.in total, gm reports 4,701 claims of crank position sensor failure combining regular warranty and extended warranty.similar to gm's statistical analysis, odi's analysis showed that the failure rate for warranty claims of engine stall while driving at three years in service is low (less than 1%).however, further analysis determined that the my 2001 vehicle build period from may 2000 through october 2000 had significantly higher (more than four times) crank position failure rates in both consumer complaint data and warranty claim data than in the build period from november 2000 through july 2001.adding the claims of known engine stall while driving and claims where engine stall was indeterminate, the failure rate at three years in service for this population is over 6%.an engineering analysis (ea06-016) has been opened to further assess the frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect in vehicles built from may 2000 through october 2000.

I have a 2001 chevy suburburban that completely stalled out, (sept 29,2011) when i was getting ready to transport my four young children to school. please note, that i'm in an area that is not accessible by public transportation. this means that when my car is down, i'm at the mercy of friends and neighbors which is quite an inconvenience. i hired a service guy to diagnose the problem and he said it was a problem with the crankshaft. while ordering the part, he was notified that the part was on a recall list. i checked the website nhtsa.gov to verify and the recall #07v521000 did exist. i contacted the chevy dealer (nash chevrolet) in snellville and was told that my vin# was not in the batch and if they serviced it, the cost would be $2500. i contacted the manufacturer and was told that my problem could be attributed to wear and tear. i would like to know if there is any possibility to get the dealer to repair my car and if it's possible to have the investigation reopened and the scope adjusted to include all 2001 suburbans that are nonconforming. i would like to also know, how does gm/chevy determine which customers deserve to be safe on the road, and why weren't all their qualifying consumers notified. is gm above the law? how is it that gm is not allowed to comply to these federal laws after an investigation has been conducted? does gm only respond to their customers if their is death and dismemberment or if litigation is involved? please advise.

The vehicle displayed a loud noise that sounded like a muffler and or vacuum. the vehicle was taken to the dealer in which they had taken diagnostic tests but wasn't sure what the problem was. they then stated that there was a known problem with the intake system in which air would surround the engine. the problem seemed to worsen each time the vehicle was in motion. the right front window was inoperative due to the motor going bad. *ak *sc *jb

After taking my truck in for a complete fuel system cleaning service, i started to hear a rattling sound every time i turned on the ac. i took it back to the dealership (capital chevrolet in montgomery, alabama) thinking that they forgot to tighten up something -- only to find out i need a new ac compressor. i overheard the service technician say that there is a bulletin out on this. i called the 800# but have not gotten a response in over a week. i was told by 2 independent service mechanics that this is a major problem with that the suburban and tahoe!!! december 2002. attempted to stop suddenly. brakes locked and the car went into a terrible skid. was unable to control the brakes by pumping. the car eventually skidded off the road into a ditch causing tremendous front-end damage. air bags never deployed. car was going about 25 miles/hour when brakes were applied.

Rear hvac coolant lines (2) were severed causing coolant loss. manufacturing defect involving frame mounted hvac lines that pass against a frame member junction. the lines were pressed hard against the frame member junction which eventually ends up slicing the hvac lines. when repaired, chevrolet routed new hvac coolant lines away from all safe points. *la

Car stalled suddenly at 40 mph, losing power steering in traffic. after a few minutes the car restarted. intermittently stalls. while gm has recalled 2001 suburbans for crank position failures in this year model, my particular vin number was not covered by the recall. i purchased replacement part and corrected the problem. gm refused to reimburse. very dangerous situation. no wonder gm is in decline with the lack of response to a very strange and dangerous engine stall with absolutely no warning. *tr

My 2001 suburban has stalled in traffic twice. i was able to turn the ignition off and then restart the engine both times. i have experienced trouble starting the car as well. problem goes away if the ignition is switched off and on several times. i am very concerned about the stalling in traffic. the vehicle is large and difficult to control without power steering and brakes. it is also very dangerous to be stalled in rush hour traffic. *nm

My 2001 chevy suburban 2500 lt has 52000 miles it is burning oil on long trips. it has been in the shop four times for this. chevy does not want to pay for this problem because it is not a recall as of now. they want my private warranty to pay for this. i also have a fifty dollar deductible that i must pay. there is a tsb on this which i have a copy of. i also think the engine sounds like it has a slight knock. i was told there is a recall on the brakes for rust corrosion which it has been two weeks and i have not received my recall. i am afraid to drive this car. about four months ago, i was driving this vehicle and it would just die. i would lose all power . it was very hard to steer it to the side of the road. luckily i never had anyone behind me or they would have slammed into me. it was in the shop for this twice. the first time they said it was probably the oil filter so i picked it up and it did it again. i told the service manager i was afraid to drive this truck and if something happens to my family i would sue them well the second time they found the problem it was something with the fuel injector. i am very dissatisfied with this truck and i also feel chevy is not backing their truck.*jb

I own a 2001 suburban. the truck uses 1 qt of motor oil to every 1000 miles. the dealer is fredrick chevrolet of lebanon, pa. the gm song they sing is that this is normal for a 5.3 engine. i can't believe that this is normal. does gm have a problem and don't want to own up to it? what about pollution? *ak

I had a 2001 chevy suburban with an oil consumption problem. it used 1 to 2 quarts of oil every 2000 miles. after several complaints to the dealer and gm i was forced to file a lawsuit which was heard by an arbitraitor. i was awarded full msrp vaule of the vehicle while gm maintained their position that nothing was wrong even after failing their oil consumption test. i now have a 2002 2500 suburban with no problems. the engine in the 2001 1500 suburban has an oil consumption problem !!! dealer still refuses to refund extended warranty monies . *jb

Oil consumption, steering column, side door panels, rear-end, seats cracking, front popping noise, steers to right constantly. this has been an ongoing thing since we bought the vehicle new in 2001. we have complained to the consumer reporting agency here in n.c. and also talked to the dealer and manufacture on numerous occasions. dealer said they have had several vehicles with oil consumption that they have traded because of it and they just kept telling us it is within manufacture limits. they have tried to fix the oil problem but with no success. also the steering has been broken down twice because of its problem. the door panels are still not fixed after 2 tries. the rear-end has been worked on 2 times because of differential fluid, the steering wheel still scrubs when turning to the right and the driver's seat is starting to crack. the consumer people in raleigh will not help us after we filled the complaint, they wrote us and told us to hire a lawyer and the manufacture only offered us a $1000.00 owner/loyalty certificate towards a new vehicle. what is our next step without hiring an attorney? *jb

We bought a 2001 chevy suburban , brand new. since we owned it, the air conditioner motor failed the first month, front left shock pops when turning, driver's seat warmer doesn't work (possible faulty switch), the 5.3 liter engine knocks and pings like crazy even when using 93 octane fuel on a steady basis. the front passenger seat was found to have cracked seat rails but dealer had no replacement rails, have to order them. gas gauge doesn't read right (when on the red line it still has 6 gallons in the tank or 20% fuel left) the thing is a piece of crap! gm didn't give a darn either. if you call to complain you get the run around. this is their top of the line passenger truck (suburban lt) and definitely not something they should be proud of. i definitely will not buy another, my parents just bought a new ford expedition since they saw all the crap breaking on this thing. other friends have also not gm after seeing first hand my brand new lemon. another friend of mine is on his 3rd replacement motor for his camaro window. he bought ac delco motors each time and they all stopped working within one year. all of these products, including my suburban are being made in mexico i just found out. i think that they must have a big problem with quality control down there or their sampling size is nil. well i hope gm has made a bundle of profits off nafta because they've definitely lost at least 7 sales that i know of due to my $40,000 piece of crap. i wouldn't recommend this car to anyone. i have heard of others complaining of the same pings/knocks in their 5.3 liter gm engines. does anyone know of a class action lawsuit regarding this? oh and the emergency brake is way too loose.

Vehicle has shut off several times while traveling at highway speed. after coasting to the shoulder and several attempts, the truck restarts. the truck also sputters during acceleration. the dealer has replaced the crankshaft sensor several times and has replaced four warped rotors that caused the brakes to be spongy. two of the power window motors have been replaced due to inoperative windows. the oil level in the truck drops between (frequent) visits to the dealership. the low oil indicator light first illuminated when the truck had only been driven 3900 miles. the dealership can't find a leak.*ak

 # 1. the day after i first puchased and picked up my vehicle it smoke us out of the parking garage on our vacation in oceanside, ca. #2 the brakes were very spongy and not anything like the one i demoed when i found this vehicle. i almost had an accident on route to oceanside. the last two trips in this has not been fixed and i had to rent a car again. # 3 about the 3 rd. day into our new vehicle i noticed the parking brake wouldn,t always hold the vehicle, even after putting it in gear, with the brake fully applied it would fail but not all the time. # 4 after reporting the smoking problem, (still on-going) i had a no oil pressure warning and notice the gage didn't respond for about 10 seconds after starting the engine, then i had pressure but a constant low oil warning kept appearing on the message center. this is when it only had 1400 miles on it. i noticed some oil spots forming where i parked, i crawled under near the right rear side of the motor to find oil dripping from the engine and off the suspension near the engine. its now been in 3 times for smoking, leaks and various other engine noises (lifters, right bank). # 5 the vehicle has pulled to the right since new. i called them, they said wait till you get a few miles on it so everything breaks in. wrong answer. i checked the tire pressure. it was uneven on all tires, mind you they were supposed to check this before i purchased the vehicle. average psi 30, should be 40-44psi cold. it helped but still pulled to the right. at 5000 miles i personally rotated the tires, this still didn't fix it. upon bringing it in for all the formentioned and last problem which by the way required renting a car twice they finally took a look at it and know it pulls to the left and the steering wheel is no longer level. # 6 the right bucket seat won't lock in at the hinge point properly. they said there was a fix coming for the engine and the seat from the factory but as of yet nothing from chevy or the dealership.*ak

Gas fumes can be smelled inside and outside the vechicle when outside temps reach over 105 degress. has been witnessed by two chevrolet service managers and head mechanic. has been serviced 5 times by bradley cheverot and i have been told that the regional rep has stated that the fumes both visable and odor are very normal. both the service manager and head mechanic have stated that they feel the car is not safe and would not put their families in my vehicle. the vechile smells up my entire home with gas fumes and has to be parked outside of the garage. the engineers have asked that a couple of parts be changed on my vechile to pasaify me, but that it is probably my fault, i must have over filled the gas tank - and i was asked just what exactly are you doing mrs. anderson to cause this problem?. i have been told by the dealership that several cars in las vegas and texas have reported the same problems.*ak
