The office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe06-016) on may 4, 2006 based on eleven vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and early warning (ewr) data alleging sudden engine shutdown while driving as a result of crank position sensor failures in my 2001-2002 general motors c/k platform vehicles equipped with 8.1l engines.in response to an information request letter sent by odi, general motors (gm) provided owner complaint information, field reports and warranty claim data based on a population of 108,338 vehicles. the data was categorized by engine stalls while driving, engine stalls with an unknown driving condition, no start conditions and claims where it was indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.general motor's response included 1,213 owner complaints and field reports of which 289 were categorized as engine stalls while driving allegedly caused by crank position sensor failures. general motors also submitted warranty claims from its regular warranty (5 years/50,000 miles) and from its extended warranty database. from the regular warranty database there were 3,140 claims of crank position sensor replacement of which 147 claims were from consumers alleging engine stall while driving.gm stated that 2,841 of the claims were indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.from its extended warranty database, gm submitted 1,561 claims of crank position sensor failure that it also stated were indeterminate as to whether an engine stall occurred while driving.in total, gm reports 4,701 claims of crank position sensor failure combining regular warranty and extended warranty.similar to gm's statistical analysis, odi's analysis showed that the failure rate for warranty claims of engine stall while driving at three years in service is low (less than 1%).however, further analysis determined that the my 2001 vehicle build period from may 2000 through october 2000 had significantly higher (more than four times) crank position failure rates in both consumer complaint data and warranty claim data than in the build period from november 2000 through july 2001.adding the claims of known engine stall while driving and claims where engine stall was indeterminate, the failure rate at three years in service for this population is over 6%.an engineering analysis (ea06-016) has been opened to further assess the frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect in vehicles built from may 2000 through october 2000.

Left-side engine manifold bolts broke off, causing exhaust gas to escape into the engine compartment on the opposite side of the firewall from the driver. the escaping exhaust causes a 'ticking' noise, which is what brought this to the attention of the owner (me). the vehicle is well-maintained and is never used in harsh or demanding conditions. primary use is transporting family in urban area. there has been no prior service work that required manifold to be removed. the manifold bolts are defective. this is a serious safety and epa issue due to exhaust gases being released in the engine compartment, and the possibility of the heat from the exhaust negatively affecting sensors and other vital engine components.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. while driving approximately 40 mph, the check coolant warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the illumination continued until coolant was added to the tank. the contact observed a gradual cooling loss over a period of time, but there was no evidence of a leak. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that there was a crack in the cylinder head, and coolant was leaking in the oil chambers. the mechanic stated that the cylinder head needed to be replaced. the failure and current mileages were 96,000. updated 07/16/08.*lj updated 07/16/08

While driving vehicle losses power, reduced engine power light comes on. i have taken the suburban to the mechanic. change the maf, tps, air filters other sensors that the diagnostic test has pointed out as problems and have had a vehicle tune up done (new spark plugs, wires, oil changed, etc.) the cost of these repairs has been over $1000 and seem i will be spending more. the problem continues to happen. reduced engine power while driving. i am afraid this could cause an accident and cause injuries or even death since it happens while driving.

Since purchasing an 02 chevrolet surburban, 8.1l and 81k miles, i have experienced multiple random engine shut offs while highway driving, creating dangerous safety situations. the motor will restart after a 5 minute rest period and run fine, until the next failure which occurs without warning. the dealership has so far been unable to diagnose the problem, cleaned maf sensor, replaced thermostat and fan clutch, changed oil, checked fuel pump pressure. no engine failure codes reported. researching internet information, i have discovered a recurring symptom related to an intermittent crankshaft position sensor (ckp) failure, that causes the engine to shut off. there is a a timed reset which allows the engine to restart. *tr

(1) the engine stopped while on interstate in construction zone on slight hill, it would not restart. (2) the construction zone on interstate 10 was approximately 3 mile long with very narrow lanes and concrete construction barriers on each side & no shoulders. bumper to bumper traffic and no way to clear the lane or get tow vehicle. (3) a good samaritan towed our vehicle about 2 miles to first point clear traffic. chevy dealer confirmed fuel pump in tank had failed & replaced pump. this was second pump failure. the pump previously failed and was replaced on 30 aug 03. previous failure dealer said keep fuel above 25% & engine would run. the tank was at 44% when engine quit. fuel tank was topped off before pump tested, engine would run but no pump pressure. someone will be killed if more failures occur in heavy traffic areas. the emergency good samaritan tow out of the construction area prevented a serious accident as it was getting dark.*ak

I am the owner of a 2002 chevy suburban, v8 engine. approximately 8 months ago my car began making terrible noises. took it to my local chevy dealer who informed me i had broken exhaust manifold bolts. and it would cost over $1000 to repair! i did not have the money to fix it and dealer said it wouldn't hurt car to continue driving. in july of 2010, my check engine light kept coming on and took it to get repaired. i was told i needed to replace my catalytic converters. $800 later i thought they were seperate problems. i come to realize that it was directly related to the bolt issue. through my research, i have learned this is a very common problem with gm cars. why wasn't there a recal????? i feel duped by gm and my government.
