I own a 1997 chevrolet tahoe which i purchased from a private party about two years ago. the mileage at the time of purchase was in the mid 20,000, and is now just under 35,000. having driven just 15,00 miles during the past two years makes it evident this vehicle has not been abused. i have recently experienced frequent problems with the anti lock brake system which often is activated for no apparent reason, resulting in a expensive brake job way before that type of repair would normally be anticipated. my mechanic has seen this same problem in several other general motors vehicles, and is convinced the problem is related to the wheel speed sensors. he is also of the opinion that general motors has known of this problem for some time, yet has failed to issue a recall which would correct the problem without cost to the owner. why hasn't this been addressed, and are there any plans to do so? thank you.

Driving on freeway, brakes faild and rear ended truck at 55mph causing a chain reaction.
2012/01/1996
Under normal driving conditions (not snow and ice), i have experienced numerous brake failures. on one occasion, for example, in april i was driving at approx 40 mph on a suburban road (no ice or snow) when the traffic light ahead changed from green to red. there was one vehicle in front of me. i applied the brakes as usual, and the abs brakes engaged. the truck shuddered and shook as i was accustomed to feeling when the abs engage in snow and ice. but there was no stopping the vehicle. i was forced to swerve off the raod to avoid hitting the car in front of me. this failure has occurred many times, but the dealer has been unable to reproduce the failure. other chevy service departments have not found the problem. i called gm and was given a file number: 980 496 553. but gm told me that they have had no other reports of faulty abs and they insisted the dealer is the party responsible for fixing the truck. my truck has spent many many weeks in various dealerships, to no avail. now i understand that the ntsb has documented thousands of such failures in gm vehicles. but apparently not on 1997 models, only 1992-96 models. let me inform you that the 1997 model chevy tahoe has the exact same problem as the vehicles that were mentioned in news reports last week, reports that 3.5 million gm vehicles are being recalled to fix the problem. can you advise me what i am supposed to do since gm has closed the door on my case and insists that there's nothing to be done with my brand new truck. by the way, this problem surfaced within the first month that i owned the truck and has occurred intermittently ever since. furthermore, many other people who have driven the truck have reported the problem to me, so it's not a problem with my perception of how abs brakes are supposed to work, as gm insists. please advise me of where i should go to get this matter solved.

This occurs every day, all day. it is a well known fact with just about all late model chevy/gmc tahoe/suburban owners, dealers, mechanics & many in the auto publishing indusatry, that these vehicles have extremely inadequate braking systems, bordering on failures & extreme fading & warping & premature wear on the front mechanicals/pads/rotors especially. you can ask just about any mechanic & gm/chevy dealer& they will acknowlege this fact. they even tout that the newer models have such an improved braking system over the previous years. i own a 97 tahoe 1500 & the previous owner & everyone i meet who owns a late model gm truck has the same problems. there are even some independent mechanics who refuse to warranty their work & parts when they do brake jobs on these vehicles. i am talking mostly about the front disc brakes. have come close to accidents quite a few times due to warped rotors & faded brakes, especially when coming down an incline, even if it is a slight to moderate descent for not a long distance. the brakes need to be replaced more often than any vehicle ihave ever owned & for the technology that is out there. sometimes every year!!! i cannot believe that these brakes were ever certified safe by the ntsb or ??? and that there are no recalls on this extreme safety hazard to the public. also.. the wiper motor on these vehicles is prone to failure (intermittent or complete,) and is also a well known problem in these circles & a serious sagety hazard as you might expect. thank you.

When pulling out of driveway, brake peddle went to floor. pulled back into garage to see what caused the problem and found that the brake line running down drivers side frame rail was rusted through back by where it exits the frame to go to the t fitting for rear brakes.

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 chevrolet tahoe. the contact stated that the abs engages when the ground is dry and pulsates very hard when stopping the vehicle. the failure was noticed while driving 10 mph. he stated that this should only happen when there is snow on the ground or when it is wet. in november of 2000, there was a voluntary recall and chevrolet repaired the brakes. there were no failures for 18,000 miles. currently, at 40,500 miles, the failure has recurred. the contact called the manufacturer and they stated that there was no recall for the brake failure. the failure mileage was 40,500. updated 10/16/08. *lj the dealer replaced the left front hub. updated 10/17/08. *jb

For about a year i have noticed that the abs braking system activates intermittently on dry pavement at slow speeds, making it difficult to stop the vehicle. the issue has become increasingly problematic, activating nearly every time i apply the brakes (many times even if i don't apply the brakes!) and i am not comfortable driving the vehicle for fear that i may not completely stop before making contact with the vehicle in front of me. although there is a recall regarding the failure of the abs system on chevy tahoes, it does not include vehicles manufactured in 1997. i researched the problem and found that the nhtsa web site had posted a remedy: remove the wheel speed sensor and clean the wheel speed surface, grease the mounting surface, reinstall the wheel speed sensor and check the peak-to-peak output voltage to ensure the wheel speed signal is within specifications. i took a copy of the remedy to my mechanic, who promptly followed the instructions and notified me that the remedy failed to fix the problem. i contacted an nhtsa customer service representative and asked if an investigation has been launched regarding this defect and was informed that there is no investigation as of yet. with all of the complaints i have been reading regarding this problem, my question is: why hasn't this issue of abs system failure in 1997 tahoes been addressed? if the problem is occurring in vehicles (regardless of the year model) and the recall has been limited to only a few year models, does this mean that the abs system failure on the 1997 tahoe is no cause for concern regarding safety? i am requesting the board to look again at the abs complaints and initiate an investigation so that gm will take financial responsibility for the repair or replacement of the abs system. thank you. *tr

Abs activation during slow motion, under 10mph. this is the third time i've had this problem. both times one of the hubs had to be replaced. this time i asked the mechanic to clean the sensors (as suggested by chevy service updates) to try and save money. it didn't work along with trying to replace the sensor. now i have to have a hub replaced again. i've been luckily so far because i know of the problem, but i've had a few close calls with hitting cars in parking lots. *tr

Dear nhtsa: i am a senior mechanical engineer and owner of a 1997 chevy tahoe 4wd vehicle. i have owned the vehicle since mid-2001. a few months ago i started to notice that periodically, the brakes would not work properly when pulling to a stop. i can hear and feel the abs system pulsing the brakes rapidly, but it provides extremely poor stopping ability. i have had several close calls with cars in front of me, not to mention pedestrians in crosswalks. this is not correct. i am a former engine designer and have worked for ford motor company. i understand mechanical systems and can tell you this isn't good...or safe. i noticed in the paper that there is a known issue regarding gm truck anti-lock brake systems. additional internet research confirmed this. i am logging this complaint so that nhtsa is aware of my problem in the hopes that gm will fix the problem for me. i have not taken the vehicle in for repair yet, as i was researching to see what could be done about it. is nhtsa aware of the best course of action? i live in madison, wisconsin...land of a lot of salt and metal corrosion. please let me know. sincerely, tim higgins. *nm

No accident yet. my 1997 tahoe is exhibiting the same symptoms as described in the media for 1999 and newer gm trucks regarding the wheel speed sensor for the antilock brakes. stopping from speeds under 5 mph, the brake pedal chatters, the antilock brake unit moans, and the truck is slow to completely stop. this started sporadically last winter and has gotten worse, now about 30% of the time. i called chevrolet's customer service today (10/13/2005) at 11:10, spoke to bagaya bonner who told me the recall affected 2000-2002 tahoes. mine would not be included, and if i had the problem fixed, it would be at my expense (gm would not reimburse since there was no recall on my vehicle). i am using today's date as the incident date, but the problem began late fall 2004 and is ongoing. *nm

When backing out of the garage the brakes failed. had i not really pressed on the brakes extremely hard i would have hit the motor home that was across the street from my driveway. i stopped about 5 inches from it. i hate to think what would have happened if this had occured while i was on the freeway and making an emergency stop. this component failed without any notice. it should not have failed at such an early age and is obviously a defect. i called the local dealer , and he told me that there was no service bulletin on the issue, and that i would have to pay for it since it was out of warranty, so i took it to a local shop instead of the dealer. the chevy dealer had the nerve to tell me that it would be about $500 to replace the booster, and they would give me no assurances that the replacement would not fail in the same manner! *ak

The abs system would kick in for no reason and didn't matter what the road surface was. the vehicle would pull excesively to the crown of the road, if you took your hands off the sterring wheel, you would end up in a ditch in less than two seconds. the cruise control would work when it wanted to, same as the horn. the brakes would pulsate. it went through one of the front pads every ten thousand miles; the other three padshad over 50% left. the transmission would shift way to early from first to second; causing the vehicle to alomost quit accelerating because of the lack of power.

My 1997 tahoe exhibits the same antilock failures that are listed for the 1999 models for nhtsa campaign id no. 05v379000 but it is not included in the recall. the same is the case for gm recall no. 03023/nhtsa id no. 05v37900, the windshield wiper circuit board. i have the same failures continuously in my '97 chevy tahoe but the recall was extended only to suburbans. as a former gm engineer i know that the same parts and suppliers are used across the board for all of the gmt 800 series (tahoes, suburbans, yukons, etc.). so i don't understand how one model can be recalled when essence all models should be recalled. *nm

The turn signals quit working at the dealer and they never did pin-point it. the 4wd system engaged on it's own at 75 mph and the trans, cut out resulting in no power and then it returned but the 4wd system was gone. the barkes failed and then started working ok. the parking brake was in need of adjustment every 2000 miles. the abs would kick in for no reason.

Front disc brakes do not function properly. i bought this vehicle in may 1997. approximately 6 months after driving this vehicle i started noticing front disc brake problems. the vehicle was taken to gunderson chevrolet were they grinded and lubed front knuckles? . problem continued and consisits of jerky and clunky front brakes. vehicle has been taken to a private repair shop were front disc pads were replaced and front rotor were turned due to warping. vehicle continues to exhibit a jerky braking motion which is annoying and could possibly cause an accident due to improper braking. i believe that this front brake system is very poorly designed and would expect that gmac should repair this $35,000 vehicle which should have a reliable and smooth front braking system.( dot number: tire size: 235/75/15 )

Dealer reported that master cylinder failed, had to replace along with front brake shoes and pads, rotors turned. we were charged for all this, dealer charged that it was normal wear and tear. we have found numerous other people who have experienced the same problem. think that master cylinder is a defective part..unfair to charge owners for this...could lead to serious crashes, mine failed without warning! *ak

Caliper slides froze due to tolerance/corossion, causing vehicle to effectively utilize one brake pad for braking. dealer noted that this is a common problem and offered to charge me for filing (service bulletin # 99-05-24-001) down the caliper slide to be within tolerance (not covered under bumper to bumper warranty - chevrolet customer service file #000014560). according to napa brake installation istructions for applicable pads (gm part numbers 7024a or 7081a), there is a posssibility of this condition breaking contact between the pad friction material and the metal backing, which would severely hamper or remove all braking power from that wheel. i have a brother with a chevy astro van of similar year, and an uncle with a full size chevy truck of similar year, both of whom have experienced front brake excessive/uneven wear. thier vehicles were out of the warranty period at the time it was noticed. i feel that chevy has denied me a warranty claim, because this is an inherent problem with thier brake design, and would be too costly to recall. i also feel that because it involves the front brakes (which provide most of braking power) of many large vehicles, that many use for towing, this should be considered for a safety recall, or at least covered under warrany, if discovered under warranty period. thank you for your time. *ak

Left front brake rotor separated. that is to say, the disc actually separated from the hub. the separation caused loss of braking on that wheel. the vehicle pulls hard toward the right(because of the remaining active brake). concerns: an inexperianced driver may have rolled the vehicle with the sudden hard pull to the right; had both rotors failed at the same time, a complete loss of front brakes would have been the result. i have the failed part. the repair shop who fixed the vehicle told me they see this kind of failure on a regular basis. thus type of composite rotor is common on many gm vehicles. having experianced the failure, i can't help but wonder if crashes may have been caused by the rotor failure, but the broken rotor could have been assumed to be a result of the crash? i have not contacted gm at this point. i have several complaints concerning this vehicle i am attepmting to address with gm, but for the most part am being told the vehicle is out of warrenty. this is a safety issue that i felt nhtsa should be aware of, and will, hopefully, look into. thank you, and i hope to hear from you soon.*ak
