In reference to the current investigation of gm trucks and suvs for brake problems (abs) at low-speed. this was reported on the news today (05/02/05). the corrosion around the abs hub sensors is a well-known problem. my 1999 chevy tahoe has had this problem for months. most repair places want to replace the hubs for a very high price ($500+ per wheel). this is ridiculous!!! i pulled my abs fuse until i can get rid of the corrosion myself. recall these vehicles now! the chevy/gmc truck-suv community has been aware of this forever, gm ignores it!!!

Since purchasing the vehicle (dealer demo) in late 1999, front rotors have been turned four times and replaced once due to warping. this problem has been attributed to the fact front brakes are doing all the braking. it seems the rear brake adjusters do not hold adjustment for more than a few applications of the brakes. the rear pads have never been replaced because they are not worn due to a lack of application to the drum. the vehicle has had the adjusters cleaned several times and the brakes have worked for a few days only to have the rear brakes lose adjustment again. obviously this is a serious saftey issue as the vehicle takes much more effort to stop its motion. athe replacement cost of the front pads and truing of the rotors has been expensive. the cost far higher than normal for most vehicles in this class. a very near accident was barely avoided this past week due to a loss of stopping power as the rear brakes do not assist the front discs. also the emergency brake does not hold the vehicle. when firmly applied a few weeks ago, on a slight grade, the vehicle began to roll.

Bought vehicle used from gm dealer jan 2003. in sept 2007, this gm dealer replaced left front hub assy due to abs stopping problems under 10 mph charging me $605 (vehicle had 95,000 miles). in dec 2011, at 151,000 miles the vehicle again had abs stopped problems under 10 mph. this time repairs required from another gm dealer were replacement of two new front abs sensors charging me $340. both dealers stated not covered under nhtsa 05v379000.

I have chevy tahoe 1999,while traveling in low speed about 20 miles per hour,i needed to stop behind cars stopping in front of me for red signal. i pushed the break pedal and it felt soft, breaking power was week and eventually i hid the car in front of me. fortunately no injury. i had my suv checked and to my surprise, i have been told that my tahoe has ruptured break line du to complete rust in all the break lines. to me this is a very serious safety matter, and as i hear it is very common with gm trucks . considering the size and mass of my suv i could be involve in fatal accident compromising life of many peoples.

Abs engages on my chevrolet tahoe as i come to a stop, preventing me to stop in a reasonably expected distance. i have a 1999 tahoe that seems to have the exact same problem addressed by nhtsa recall campaign number 05v37900, gm recall number 05068. the problem occurs every time i come to a complete stop. as the vehicle slows to 1 or 2 mph the abs engages and increases the stopping distance. the vehicle was purchased and registered and used in new york from new till present. new york is one of the salt belt states that is covered in the recall listed above. i have contacted gm and they told me the recall did not apply to my particular tahoe. i bought the vehicle brand new in 1998 . the rep at gm could not explain why my particular vehicle was not covered by the recall..the vehicle was looked at by a gm mechanic. he said the sensors would have to be removed, cleaned, anti-rust material applied, and replaced. the work has not been done yet.

My 1999 chevrolet tahoe has had an ongoing brake problem from the day i bought it. the brakes seem to apply themselves during normal driving. i have had to replace two sets of tires and two sets of front brake pads in less than 50000 miles. sometimes when i smell something getting hot while driving i will stop and feel the front wheels. they will be so hot that i cannot touch them. then the other day i had to make a panic stop and the anti lock system did not work and the whole car shuddered and shook and i thought for sure i would hit the car in front of me. i have not taken it to the chevrolet dealer as i am on limited income and cannot afford a large expense. i have been following the problems with these cars for years hoping that gm would finally issue a recall. the tire dealer that installed the last set of tires told me that the tires failed because of the front wheels getting so hot. because of this i have put very few miles on the car and do not drive it over 50 mph. i still have the tires from the rear but threw away the ones from the front because of the damage to them.

Brake line to rear axle corroded and ruptured on 1999 chevy tahoe. rupture occurred where the brake line passes below the fuel tank support strap attachment point. my son was able to control the vehicle and get home safely with no rear brakes, but was scared as a result. i have just finished replacing the brake line from the abs module all the way to the rear axle as a result of wide spread corrosion and structural weakness in the line. i also had to replace two fuel lines that pass through the same area as the brake line for excessive corrosion as well. i have the old parts.

While driving my 99 tahoe down a 4 lane road, a drunk had pulled out infront of me. i had slammed on my brakes and swerved to avoid him but still hit him pretty hard in his rear quarter panel. as a result of the accident, i had suffered a double hematoma to my brain and had brain surgery to stay alive. my complaint with my tahoe is 1) my airbag in my steering wheel did not deploy. i think if it did, my injury would have been avoided. 2) i question the stopping ability if my anti dive front brakes. i was on the brakes hard with the vehicle nosing down but i think my stopping distance should have been shorter. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. in an attempt to engage the brakes at 10 mph, the abs warning indicator illuminated and the brake pedal extended to the floor. the contact was unable to engage the brakes normally, which resulted in less braking distance. while driving low speeds in a parking lot, the abs remained activated and made a grinding sound. a local mechanic discovered nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock); however, the dealer stated that the vin was not included in the recall. the failure mileage was 166,000 and current mileage was 168,000.

There have been several incidents, 2 of which could have resulted in serious injury. the brakes on our 1999 chevrolet tahoe don't always work properly. the anti-lock brakes activate even on completely dry surfaces. we have an extremely steep driveway that runs directly off of the main street. while attempting to stop on the driveway for a passing car we could not, and only split second timing was the reason we did not hit the passing auto. another close call occurred when we were parking in a stall in front of a local store. i applied the brakes but there was a delay before any braking started and we almost it the building. if there had been a person in front of the vehicle i would have crushed them against a brick wall. these incidents have caused both my wife and myself to loose confidence in the safety of the vehicle. brakes are the most critical safety feature on a vehicle and must function properly. *tr

Original owner of 1999 tahoe. since purchase, i have felt that the truck was not stopping well, even at low speeds. i returned to dealer and they continued to say nothing was wrong. since that time, i have had four different dealers in three states and two private mechanics look at it. all have said it performs as intended. the brakes were worked on seven times that i have records for. at 17k miles, 32k miles, rear brakes were cleaned and adjusted. at 36k, front rotors were resurfaced, rear brakes cleaned/adjusted. at 47k, front rotors were replaced and rear drums were turned. replaced pads. rears adjusted at 59k. at 72k, replaced front brakes and machined rotors. cleaned/adjusted rears. this continues on every 20k miles or so and still the truck does not stop under normal conditions even at low speeds. the rear brake adjustments only last about two weeks, then back to the same thing. luckily, i have not had an accident yet but have had to pull to the side to avoid hitting car in front of me. *nm

I purchased this vehicle from my nephew on 11/30/07. since then, at least a dozen times, the brakes pulsate at very low speeds. an online search seemed to indicate this is a problem with rust or dirt causing the abs sensors to register incorrectly. on 12/05/07, i took the vehicle to a dealership to have the abs sensors and ring cleaned. i was informed later that 3 of the 4 sensors were electrically bad and needed to be replaced and it would cost almost $800. the abs warning light has not once come on to indicate there was an abs problem. gm should be required to recall all vehicles suspected to have abs sensor/ring problems and vehicles in which the abs warning system does not function correctly. *tr

I have a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. there has been a limited recall on the wheel sensor that controls the abs brake system. i took my vehicle in for the recall but was informed it was not included in the recall. it has the same problems that chevy's included in the recall. the problem is...sometimes the abs activates when the brakes haven't even been applied. sometimes it activates at very low speeds causing longer braking distance. i finally pulled the fuse to deactivate the abs. *jb

1999 chevrolet tahoe is plagues with activation of the abs system at low speeds (ie bumper to bumper traffic or slowing to a stop sign/traffic light) when the abs system engages thedriver has no input to the brakes and the stopping distance is greatly increased leading to possible and likely crashes. i happens intermittantly, but numerous times daily! dealer is aware of an existing recall involving 1999-2002 gm vehicles from my area..but will not cover my $700 for repairs that shoul dbe covered by the recall (nhtsa # 05v379000 wheel speed sensors)

Gm issued a recall #05068 on over 800,000 trucks & suvs involving improper abs activation at low/slow speeds. (nhtsa campaign id #05v379000). i took my 1999 chev tahoe to the dealer today for the repair, and was told this recall did not effect my vehicle, that it did not include my vin #. the service person said he did observe the fact that my vehicle indeed has the problem, but they cannot fix it per gm's guidelines. i do not understand how - if it is evident the vehicle has the unsafe equipment/actions that warrant the recall, how can it be excluded from the recall? as of this date, i do not have an auto accident and/or personal injury on record due to the fact that i have learned to adjust my driving to avoid the obvious fact that, yes, i would have one or two rear-end accidents a week if i did not. this vehicle was purchased by me dec 2004 and was a problem from the beginning. we did not immediately have the money to pay to have it fixed. my husband was checking to see if the wiper system had been recalled for some reason as they rarely work, when he discovered the brake problem was being investigated. so we have waited this process out, only to discover it does not include our tahoe. as a matter of fact, when he printed the recall information out on 9/29/05, it listed the 1999 tahoes, but now as of today, it has been changed to 2000 and newer. how can that be when my vehicle has the problem? *jb

I brought my 1999 chevrolet tahoe to alexandria buick-pontiac-gmc in alexandria, virginia on december 14, 2005 because the abs light kept coming on in the dashboard. mechanic diagnosis was speed sensors were missing. he replaced the hub assemblies and speed sensors. total repair was $1064.54. i then found out that a recall on the problem i had just repaired was going on in the rust belt states and canada. the recall was for the whole northeast part of the country down to and including washington dc. i work in washington and live about 5 miles from the city. i wrote the gm claims department with copies of every receipt and a copy of the recall letter. they contacted me and told me the repair was indeed one included within the recall, but they were denying the claim because i live in virginia and the recall is only valid in salt belt states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maryland, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia. i want the recall to be opened back up and to include additional states. i spend every single day in washington, what makes my claim any different from the person that lives 5 miles away from me, but happens to live across the state border? what is different from someone who lives in washington and works in virginia? since my home address was virginia, my claim was denied. the recall campaign # is 05v379000. *nm the engine light illuminated, the serpentine belt was repalced. the water pump was leaking abd the pinion seal was replaced. updated 02/09/06. *jb

I have a 1999 chevy tahoe. there have been a few instances when i have applied the brakes at low speeds; the brakes lock causing the truck to skip and skid. this is terrifying, as i do not know when the truck will stop. sometimes the skip and skid will go for 10-15 feet before finally stopping. twice i have almost hit another vehicle. a third time i had to drive off the road to avoid a collision because the truck would not stop. there is a current recall issued by nhtsa #05v379000 but does not extend to california. i reside in northern california. this vehicle is used in the snow/sleet/rain. the condition (summary of recall) is in occurring in my vehicle here in northern california and should be considered in the recall. this is a very dangerous occurrence with the brakes that could result in a motor vehicle accident. *jb

In reference to the current investigation of gm trucks and suvs for brake problems at low speed. as i slow down or have to stop on clear/dry roadways, i have been fortunate not to smash into the vehicle in front of me or to cause an accident by going past the stop sign. i have had this problem with my 1999 chevy tahoe since december, 2004 and it's getting worse. it used to happen just once in awhile, now it happens 99% of the time when i slow down or need to stop(at a speed of under 10). i'm having to double pump the brakes and still pray it will stop in time. most repair places want to replace the hubs for a very high price of $500 per wheel or more. i am a michigan resident living in a salt belt state and i'm not understanding why the 1999 year chevy tahoe isn't covered under the recall for repairing the anti-lock brakes. i would like to challenge the national highway traffic safety department to drive my vehicle and then determine if it shouldn't be covered. *nm

About 2 months ago the anti-lock brakes on my tahoe started activating as i was slowing down or stopping on clear/dry roadways. it took longer to stop, and the first few times it happened i was fortunate enough to stop without smashing into the car in front of me, or that there was no car in the intersection when i went past the stop sign a few feet. i was told by a mechanic friend that it was caused by a dirty or defective abs sensor. he also told me that gm does not sell the sensor seperately and you have to buy the entire wheel hub, which costs around $500 per wheel. i have not had it repaired yet due to the cost. i simply allow myself more time to stop. i was told that i could disable the anti-lock brakes. i am hesitant to do that because i feel i have better control with the anti-lock brakes than conventional brakes with the weather in the area where i live.

Chevy tahoe 1999, we have owned this vehicle for four years and put 40,000 + miles on it, it now has 102,000 miles. in that time frame we have had to replace the front roters and pads four times. in january of 2002 i had an accident at slow speed in slushy road conditions where the vehicle did not stop over a travel distance of 100'+/- it was blamed on driver error and poor road conditions, since that time we had a complete failure of the front brakes with no accident and fortunately no injury. a third incident resulted in no property damage or accident.

Truck was taken in repeatedly for brakes, transmission, air conditioner and headlights prior to warranty expiration and was told they could not duplicate the problem or it was under chev specs or we were experiencing anti-lock brakes. water pump began leaking and had to be replaced 2200 miles outside of warranty. entire brake system, lines-calipers, everything had to be replaced because foreign fluid corroded the system. no one has touched the brakes but the dealer. we repeatedly complained about the brakes taking too long to stop the vehicle, having a spongy feel and absolutely no confidence that they would stop in an emergency situation. overall, the brakes just did not feel safe and we reported this when the vehicle was still under warranty. intake manifold is leaking and needs to be replaced. battery exploded and leaked battery acid everywhere damaging other engine parts. transmission is in need of an overhaul/replacement either as a direct result of the battery exploding or mere coincidence considering we have always complained that something was wrong with the transmission and you could push the truck while in park a full foot. the air conditioner has always leaked after driving approx. 2 hr as well as the driver's side high beam headlight always has water in it. detailed complaints have been filed with the attorney generals of az and fl, as well as copies sent to the dealer, manufacturer and leasing company involved. chevrolet should be ashamed of the shoddy product that rolled off their assembly line and the manner in which they conduct business surrounding consumer complaints generated as a direct result from poor workmanship at one of their factories. there is a long list of cosmetic defects as well. for instance, the custom leather seats that we paid extra for are wearing holes in them; the driver's side door handle is cracked, drink holders are rusting, and the list goes on and on.

I had only the vehicle a couple two or three months when one day i found myself in a situation to have to make an emergency stop while going about 35 mph, when i stomped on the brakes the rear brakes locked up and the tires skid and screeched. the front end went to the right and the rear end went to the left on the inside lane of a four lane street which put the front end in the right same direction lane and the rear end in the inside on-coming lane. it really scared me as i expected a true straight forward stop without any skidding. also at times when the brakes are applied normally they at any speed the brakes will pull hard on the steering wheel either left or right. one never knows until the brakes are applied. i have this vehicle into three different dealership service departments several times for repair of this and many other things over the past year while working with the chevrolet customer assistance office. finally i was allowed to meet with the south central region area service manager for general motors. he drove the vehicle and about lost control of the vehicle while making a simulated emergency stop. he has advised me that it was normal. i do not agree with him as i have and have had other vehicles with anti-lock brakes that have responded like that. i feel like the vehicle is defective and dangerous. i requested gm to purchase the vehicle back from me for that reason and they have refused.

I own a 1999 chevrolet tahoe. it has a severe brake problem. sometimes when you are going under 40 and step on the brakes the abs seems to activate making a loud noise and the vehicle does not want to stop unless you stand on the brakes and then it stops slowly. i had a complete brake job done and it didn't get any better even though i took it back 2 more times. while i was on the internet trying to find a site that might be able to tell me what was wrong i ran across a site called www.ohiolemonlaw.com. they listed my vehicle model and year as having a recall for exactly the problem i was having. i then checked with gm and my local chevrolet dealership and they were both aware of the problem and the recall but said my vehicle's vin was not included in the recall. if there was a recall on the 1999 tahoe for exactly the same problem as my 1999 tahoe then i feel that my vehicle should be covered under that recall. i also looked under the nhtsa site and found a recall campaign number 05v379000 for exactly the same problem i am having. please let me know what my options are. my vin # is 3gnek18rxxg111340 and i am the original owner thank you. *nm

The positive terminal on the original delco battery broke off, leaking acid down the wheel well onto the right front brake lines and the abs electrical connector to the right front brake. the acid corroded the brake line, electrical connector, and removed the paint on the frame and lower a-frame. the failure occured in our driveway and the vehicle was disabled. had to buy a new battery and 2 cans of battery acid cleaner to remove the acid in the right side engine compartment and lower frame assembly. the brake problem occured as my wife was driving home. she said that the steering was shaking and rumbling. it was pulling to one side. i found the left front caliper had seized in the cradle assembly and worn the outer pad to less than a tenth of an inch. she said it had been squealing for a couple of days. the right side was ok, but, i changed all front pads any how. i had to clean rust from the caliper and mount to allow movement in the assembly. i still have the bad battery and the brake pads. *ak

Replacement front brake rotors installed on a 1999 chevy tahoe 2 door and driven approximately 100 miles in 15 mile increments resulted in significant intereference wear between the disc brake pad backing plates and the cylindrical portion of the brake rotors, with significant heat generation, noise, and odor. subsequent inspection of the replacement rotors and the oem rotors revealed that the replacement rotors diameter of the cylindrical portion that covers the vehicle hub were approximately 3/16 larger diameter than the oem rotors. replacement rotors have been returned to the seller, paul do at cquencemotorsports, 4933 pearce street, apt. b, huntington beach, ca 92649. i believe the rotors were manufactured in china, their part number is 5569 min thk 30.86mm pt14 bt. fortunately, the problem was discovered before significant vehicle damage occured. the stock rotors were reinstalled without interference. old part unavailable, it was returned to seller under warranty.*ak

After several trips to the dealership to have the problem connected to the transmission fixed, the dealership finally replaced the entire transmission. the problem presented itself when after the truck was going, when i had to stop for a light, stop sign or whatever, i would then engage the gas pedal. the truck would only inch away, when my foot was completely down on the gas. the sideview mirror on the passenger side shattered for no apparent reason, while driving on an open road. when i took the truck in to have it fixed, i was told the entire brake system would have to be replaced. the master cylinder was leaking and the shoes and pads were gone. now my truck is currently going back to the dealership because there is a knocking noise in the steering wheel column and a buzzing noise when the fan is turned on for heat.

Excessive wearing of brake pads, brake shoes due to the intermittent engagement of the power booster while driving. took vehicle when it first had this problem to two different chevrolet dealerships and was told that because i could not prove the booster's premature triggering that it would not be covered under warranty, in other words they told me if we don't see it as being broken we aren't fixing it.. they did not acknowledge the existance of a safety bulleting saying in fact that the power booster was prone to failure. since then i have had to change out the brake pads twice at my own expense. i replaced all parts with gmac factory parts and replaced the power booster with a gm rebuilt power booster. *ak
