Defect SummaryCertain sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and passenger vans fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 135, ?passenger car brake systems.? some of these vehicles were produced with an out-of-specification brake hydro-boost housing relief valve bore.
Consequence SummaryConsequently, the valve o-ring seal may fracture. steering efforts may be slightly increased while braking or parking. under certain driving conditions, a fractured seal may require a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seat fracture.
Corrective SummaryDealers are to replace the hydro-boost relief valve. the recall began on june 18, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339; chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; gmc at 1-866-996-9463; or hummer at 1-866-486-6376.

The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure. of the890 total complaints for brake pipe corrosion identified, 761 were located in salt belt states (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).the complaint rate per 100,000 vehicles sold is significantly higher in the salt belt, 43.0, compared with 3.0 for the remaining states.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints, the brake pipe failure has allegedly occurred suddenly, with no warning to the driver (i.e., no brake warning light), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 26 of these incidents, the increase in stopping distance that resulted was alleged as a factor in a crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.an engineering analysis has been opened for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

Rear brake line rusted through and lost brakes. brake pedal went to floor losing 95% of braking ability. i wasn't in the car, wife was driving with my children. if this had been at a higher speed or going down a hill i shutter at what could have happened. mechanic replaced 90% of the brake lines as he said they were in bad shape. thousand dollar job. my wife's highlander (other vehicle) has 175k on it, same year and we don't have this problem, i will double check them though. i asked the mechanic if he sees a lot of toyota's in here for brake lines, nope. they use better stuff with a special coating. mostly chevy, dodge, ford come through. you would think these manufacturers would know better with some states being in the salt belt. *tr

My wife went to start the vehicle by placing foot on the brake pedal. at start-up the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and she realized she had no braking power. i crawled under the vehicle to notice a significant amount of brake fluid leaking from very corroted brake lines. luckily, we were two blocks from a repair shop. once at the repair shop they advised that not only were the front brake lines leaking but all of the brake lines were corroted and needed replaced immediately. this repair cost me over $815.00 on a 9 year old vehicle. i've never had brake lines go bad on any vehicle i've owned.

I was advised by a gm technician during visit to dealer for regular maintenance to replace corroded brake lines if i intended to keep the vehicle. cost would be approximately $2,000 to $2,500 and that i shouldn't wait too long to do so for obvious safety reasons. service manager at this gm dealership stated that they have replaced a ton of them at owners' expense. my vehicle is never driven in snow or ice and i have never had to replace brake lines on any vehicle that i have owned over the past 50+ years - very disheartening. *tr

I was driving on the highway, and a truck cut me off. i applied the brakes, and the pedal went to the floor. i was able to avoid crashing by pumping the brakes. i pulled off the side of the highway, and saw brake fluid under the truck. as i was only a few miles from home, i crawled home using the emergency brake. upon further investigation, all of the brake lines ,from front to back, were rusted and rotted. i paid a mechanic shop to replace all of the brake lines with stainless steel lines. in all of my years of driving, i have never seen brake lines rot out after only nine years and 40,000 miles. i would like to be reimbursed by chevy for the replacement of the brake lines. a very serious accident could have occurred. and to think that just a few days before, i was driving with my family in the truck! *tr

On september 3rd, 2012 i was driving my 2003 chevy tahoe and i had just pulled into a shopping center and as i was approaching a stop sign i applied the brakes. the brake pedal went straight to the floor. i went straight through the stop sign, but, luckily there were no other vehicles at the intersection. i was able to put the vehicle into 1st gear and guide it into a parking spot away from other vehicles. when i exited the vehicle and looked under the truck, i could see all of the brake line fluid pouring out of the brake lines. the tahoe was towed to my mechanic. during the repair, the mechanic showed me all of the brake lines and they were all severely corroded. every brake line had to be replaced. there is no other corrosion on the vehicle. *tr

Complete failure of brake lines and calipers secondary to rust. truck (a gm tahoe) was inspected at the dealer one month ago and passed pa inspection. approximately 1 month later (1000 highway miles) my truck had to return to the dealer to rectify something they had previously been fixed, unrelated to the brakes. upon picking up the truck after that repair, the brakes were applied after starting the car to put into gear and the entire break system blew. thank goodness, the vehicle was not in motion because i would not have been able to stop. the dealer them put the car up on the lift and i was told the entire system was rusted, including all the bolts to the system. the only way to repair was to cut the entire brake line system off and replace. the rear caliper covers also began to rust, so they are also being replaced. i can provide pictures of all areas prior to repair. *tr

On the evening of july 13 my wife was driving the tahoe when the check brake warning light came on. she was able to enter our driveway and stop the vehicle. the next morning i checked the vehicle and there was no resistance on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor. looking under the hood i found the brake fluid reservoir was empty. the mechanic that repaired the vehicle found the rear steel brake line rusted out. the vehicle is only 11 years old and has 116,184 miles and i feel that it is a bit premature for the brake line failure due to rust. i owned two chevrolet's and a ford product for over 20 years each and never had a problem with the steel brake lines. *tr

This is a complaint about the abs. i have had them cleaned , which worked a short time, but now everytime i apply the brakes the abs tries to take over, lengthening my stopping distance. i do not feel safe using these brakes and would like to know how to disconnect them. these sensors may work fine in a controlled environment, but out in the real world of snow and salt , the life span is too short.
09/25/2009910001
I own a 2003 chevrolet tahoe z71 and recently experienced some problems with the abs. when slowing down, below 10mph, the abs kicks in randomly. this happens on clean, dry pavement. this is a frightening thing to happen to someone, especially someone who is driving around two small children. i did some online research and noticed this seems to be a common problem. i also noticed there was a recall for older vehicles that this was happening to and i wonder why the recall doesn't pertain to 2003 and newer vehicles. i would appreciate someone looking into this further and make some type of resolution to the problem. i do see a bulletin posted by chevrolet so apparently this is a common and dangerous occurrence. *tr

I had to have the wheel speed sensor cleaned 1and 1/2 years ago on my chevy tahoe. it recently started acting up again. then yesterday during a hard brake to avoid debris in the road the braks failed completely. i do not know yet what failed but there is very little brake fluid left in the reservoir. i see that there are more than 1 recall for tahoes regarding brakes, but my vehicle is not included?

No accident yet. smelled gas so i looked under 2003 tahoe for leaks and noticed filler neck plus fuel lines along with brake lines with exreme rust. i understand rust forms on all metals. but this is something you should find on twenty year or older vehicles. i am a licenced apr. and run a quality shop and have work on vehicles for a living for over thirty years and only see this on substandard or low grade materails. so why do these lines have this problem? this is a safety issue that really should be addressed. i,ved seen other manufacturers recall much less problems why not this. if you price out these pieces for replacement you or your costumer better be sitting down. parts are normally in stock. we all know they only stock whats sells reguarly. please again this is safety problem chevy should own up to.

In nov of 2008 we started having problems with the speedometer. took it to our dealer and they replaced the ipc and it did not fix the problem, after we got the tahoe back we started having problems with the cruise control as well. the speedometer becomes jerky and if we use the cruise the tahoe speeds up and we have to turn cruise off to stop it from speeding out of control. also when the speedometer becomes jerky the service brake system alarm goes off after it makes it hard to stop.  Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet tahoe. while driving 5 mph downhill and approaching a stop, the antilock brakes pushed back on the contact's foot. the vehicle became difficult to stop and another vehicle nearly crashed into the contact's vehicle. the dealer repaired the brakes under nhtsa campaign id number 04v045000 (service brakes, hydraulic). when the failure occurred a second time, the dealer had a technician inspect the vehicle. it was discovered that the antilock brakes failed and the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $200. the failure mileage was 53,000 and current mileage was 59,000. updated 10/16/08 *bf updated 10/20/08. *jb

Tl*- the contact stated while driving the 2003 chevrolet tahoe at 35 mph and while slowing down to a stop sign with foot on the brake pedal the vehicle felt as if it the brakes were being pumped. the brakes would only slow the vehicle, it would not stop it at a slow rate of speed. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic, who determined that the abs was inadvertently activating at a lower speed. *ak updated 02/22/07. *jb

The brakes failed to stop the truck when depressed between 10-15 mph upon approaching a traffic light. this resulted in the truck rear ending another vehicle. all the dashboard warning lights and the check engine light started flashing an hour before the brake failure. also, there was a rattling/thumping noise in the steering wheel when turning. the truck was towed to the dealership, who together with insurance company had to inspect the truck to determine the cause of the brake failure.*ak

Anti lock brake concern: early this summer i had to suddenly stop on the freeway. it was dry pavement on a completely clear straightaway. the anti lock brakes went into play and the tahoe was somehow pulled us to the side. my wife said what the hell was that why. i felt the same way. had we been on ice or a wet surface this could have caused us to loose control completely. it almost felt like we were going to loose control. there is no pulling or concerns however during normal braking. date below is approximately. *ak

Right passenger wheel hub failure on owner's 2003 chevrolet tahoe with abs light illuminated on dashboard with grinding noise from wheel. hub replaced by chevrolet dealer, and informed that driver's wheel hub needs replacement too. there is a technical service bulletin (tsb) on the issue by chevrolet, which does not consider this a safety issue, even though the hub has the potential of shearing off at speed. *tr

Parking brake premature wearing results in vehicle that can roll down a hill and cause injury or accident. with 28,000 miles on my 2001 chevy tahoe, the parking brake will not hold. after paying the dealer to look at the problem i was told that the brake shoes were worn. i was informed that other newer model trucks have the same condition. the service tech said, driving just 10 feet will wear them out. i informed i do not drive with the brake on. on perhaps 2-3 ocassions did i move with the brake on and once the chime sounded it was taken off. driving 10 feet is hardly acceptable. i contacted chevrolet about this built-iin requirement for service that makes the dealer happy and causes a major safety issue. they were not willing to make any goodwill gestures, citing this was a wear issue. *la
