In aug 2008 my speedometer started acting improperly. it would work off and on. then eventually it stopped working all together. i was ok driving on highway because the tachometer was still working. just recently the tac stopped also. this has to be a safety issue and should be recalled. i am just worried that i pay $600 to get it fixed and it happens again. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet tahoe. while driving 10 mph, the speedometer displayed 60 mph. the failure occurred intermittently. the dealer stated that because there was a service bulletin regarding the failure and the mileage on the vehicle exceeded 80,000, no compensation would be provided. the manufacturer agreed with the dealer. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 77,000 and current mileage was 98,000.

2004 chevrolet tahoe speedometer cluster failed around thanksgiving 2008 while i was out of state and not near a chevrolet dealership. i was over the extended cover allowance on miles. speedometer clusters on several makes and models for chevrolet vehicles are having this problem and chevrolet is not recalling them. speedometer only works sometimes. half of the speedometer is light up while other half is not. speedometer shows 20 miles an hour when traveling at least 60 miles per hour. *tr

My speedometer has been freezing up and not working properly lately. sometimes, especially when it's cold out, the speedometer will stay at 0 mph and not even move - once it does get going, it go up, but when i come to a complete stop, it won't go back to 0 - it may stop at 20 or 30. sometime, the speedometer will even exceed the max speed on the dash and i know i'm not going that fast. this problem seems to be a reoccuring issue with many users of a '04 chevy tahoe - i would think this would warrant a recall if this many people are having the same problem. i have heard gm had sent out a letter addressing this issue, but will only cover it if there's 70,000 or less on the vehicle - what do the people do if they are over that mark, we shouldn't have to pay for this - especially if everyone is having the same problem - this seems to be a safety issue as well. what can be done? *tr

I own a 2004 chevy tahoe. on january 14, 2009, my speedometer started malfunctioning. at first, when i would start the car and drive, it would work but after about 10 min. it would start indicating the wrong speed. it's now been a few days and the speedometer isn't working correctly at all. when i'm driving approx. 30 miles per hr., the needle reads 120 mph. i won't be able to get my vehicle into the dealership until next week...by the looks of all the complaints, this seems to be a problem with many 2004 tahoe owners. i was hoping this was a recalled item. *tr

2004 tahoe (now 81,000 mi) - sticking/misreading speedometer. problem first appeared infrequently approx 3 years ago. it now happens every time i drive after dark and over 65mpr (interstate travel). i have noticed that if anything else is in use at the moment (a/c, dvd player, passenger lighting, windshield wipers, dashlighting) the speedometer always sticks. resetting it requires me to restart the vehicle (depending on where speedometer stuck) up to 20 times. (it resets 5 mpr at a time) i used to be able to pull the fuse and replace it for a quick fix, those days are long gone. *tr

Instrument panel malfunctions by sticking while driving and not returning to zero when the car is turned off. in order to get the speedometer to zero out you have to turn the car on and off until the needle drops to zero. other times the instrument panel fails to register any values. i called chevrolet customer assistance center they referred me to the dealership which wants to charge me $ 500 for the part and an amount to be determined in labor ($200-300) to replace the instrument cluster. this appears to be a known defect for model years 2003-2007. several complaints have been filed in court. northern district of ca. one such matter. hundreds, if not thousands of defective instrument panels have been cited by the case filing and the listing on several public websites that include the nhtsa website. the nhtsa cites in reports that in 2005 30% of accidents leading to fatalities are speed related crashes; the same reference lists 13,113 lives were lost. considering this assessment by the nhtsa - i find this matter not subject to full recall or further detailed investigation an alarming issue. due to the instrument panel being a vital measuring device for the operator this becomes a significant safety and concern for all consumers who are on roads where these vehicles are used not just the owners.

Speedometer started sticking after reaching mileage of 90,000. got stuck at apx.70 mph and after driving awhile it increased to 120 pointing south even while at a stand still. then oil and gas gauge started to error. dealership cost over $500 to repair an instrument cluster. never notified, heard of recall, or informed of problem from dealer or manufacturer until problem started. searched internet and learned of other owners with same problem. called gm and they stated something about a settlement but it was too late as my vehicle didn't error until after some deadline. i'm baffled as to why some owners were excluded if problems didn't exist at the time gm rectified others. is it the owners fault that the vehicle didn't error before this so called unfair time line? if i had known about the gm replacement sooner, maybe i should have just had it replaced before it errored......will never purchase another gm vehicle again as their practices are not helpful to their customers. *tr

Owner of 2004 chevrolet tahoe. the speedometer began to act erraticly recently and became completely unreliable. after checking local gm dealership, service person said that since the car is out of warranty, the expense would be between 500 to 600 dollars and take three to four days to repair. this seemed difficult for me to believe, so i phoned another gm dealership, and they said that the repair would be between 400 to 500 dollars. that particular dealership said they could have the part ordered and at their location within 24 hours, and it would only take an hour to install. i phoned local parts stores and then became aware to the host of problems related to gm speedometers between the years of 2003 and 2004, and they said the only place to purchase the instrument panel cluster was through a gm dealership, or salvage yard. i completely wrote off the salvage yard, as how could i be certain that the salvaged part would not likewise become unreliable. as another resource, i checked the internet, and to my surprise, there was row after row, after row, of consumers whose gm products similar to mine had experienced the identical problem with their speedometers. after reading so many testimonials of disappointed drivers who were like me, thrown into the uncertainty of how fast or slow they were going, i felt compelled to write to you. everyone in our family is at risk when we drive or ride in this automobile, and the dealers' discrepancy in the approach to repair the speedometer leaves me wanting to try another reputable repair service. i phoned two other gm dealerships, today, but they were closed on saturday. this certainly must be a problem that you have become aware of over the past several months, and i would much appreciate your advice in the direction i should go from here. my sincerest gratitude. michael hughes. *cn

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet tahoe. the contact received a letter from the manufacturer stating that the instrument panel gauge may malfunction, resulting in incorrect readings on the speedometer. presently, while driving at various speeds, the fuel gauge dial will sporadically drop to empty and the vehicle will shut off. the contact also stated that the speedometer malfunctions and displays the incorrect speed; however, it resets itself automatically within two to three days. the dealer stated that they were not obligated to repair the vehicle because it has exceeded 70,000 miles. the failure mileage was 85,000 and current mileage was 107,827.

The speedometer randomly moves from say 30 mph to 120 when you have not increased your speed. when you stop it stays at 120 until you restart the vehicle then it will only come down maybe to 80 when you are standing still. i called the dealer and they want 600 dollars to fix it. i have researched this site and others and have found many people with the same problem. i believe chevrolet should take care of this problem because it is an obvious manufacturing defect and could lead to injury. *tr

My 2004 chevy tahoe has a defective speedometer. at 37,500 miles, conveniently just after warranty expired, the speedometer needle started jumping erratically, and then a few days later, it quit working completely. i have been informed by 2 local dealers in the s.f. bay area that it will cost approx $600-900 to repair, and i will be without my vehicle for up to a week. unfortunately, i cannot be without it b/c i work full time and am a single mother. i did see on ebay that there is a person that can repair the cluster and it is a whole lot cheaper than taking it to the dealer, but i would be without the whole cluster for quite some time. this is dangerous! i have been driving for several months not having a clue as to how fast i am actually driving, and it makes me really nervous. i cannot afford the $600-900 to have it repaired, and feel that gm should be forced to recall and repair this problem immediately! come on, this has affected thousands of people already! *jb

Tl*- the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet tahoe with an odometer reading of 80000 miles. the contact noticed that when driving for a long period of time and coming to a complete stop then start moving again the speedometer will stay at zero. the contact stated that the only way to get the speedometer to work again was to turn the vehicle off, then let it sit for a moment and restart. this problem made the contact run out of gas several times since the gas gauge did not working properly, the oil gauge wasincorrect as well. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer, and they told him that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. *ak

While driving my 2004 tahoe down the highway my oil pressure indicator dropped to zero. i pulled over and shut it off. i checked the oil, which was fine, and re-started the vehicle. the pressure returned to normal. two days later the same thing happened except this time i did not get oil pressure back. after having it towed to a shop, needless to say it worked again. at this time i was advised that the oil sending unit may be faulty and paid to have it changed. this did not fix the problem and finally it failed for good. the repair shop verified that the engine did have good oil pressure and that it was an indicating problem. i found a company on-line that repaired instrument panels and chose to take the vehicle home and remove it myself to send off for repair. on the way home, my speedometer malfunctioned and now reads 25 mph at a stand still. one problem i can understand. two problems this close together tells me that this instrument panel is junk. after researching this i have found many others with the same problem. i am extremely upset about the amount of money i have spent for such poor quality. i would hope that gm will back its products and re-call these panels or at least cover the repair costs for the individuals with instrument panel problems. *nm

Around 37,000 miles my speedometer began acting up. it will read anything from 0-120 mph at any speed. this has became a major safety concern when traveling at highway speeds and the speedometer reads 70 mph, but until you pass another vehicle and get a sense of your actual speed that i realize the speedometer is stuck, and i really am traveling closer to 85 or 90. gm has told me that the entire speedometer would have to be replaced at my expense. a cost of around $450. *nm

Speedometer will malfunction while driving. it will read 35 mph when i am doing at least 70 mph. other times it will not register anything at all. i have read many posts on the internet that many other gm full size trucks/suvs are having the same issue. this is definitely not safe and when you are trying to exit a highway ramp at the posted speed you can not due to the malfunctioning speedometer. need a recall to repair these speedometers before some serious accidents occur. *nm

While driving our 2004 chevy tahoe the speedometer acts erratically going anywhere from -0- to -120-. we feel that this is a very scary feeling when driving either on the freeway or driving in town. we feel that the chevrolet corporation should do a major recall on this problem. it is a huge problem. if chevrolet takes pride in there vehicles they will do a recall on this problem and fix it for all of us who drive there vehicles. *jb

One day while traveling on the highway at around 70 mph, the speedometer was acting strange. the speedometer was jerky. once i got off the highway and came to a complete stop the speedometer went pass 0 mph. then when i got going again on city streets the speedometer was off by 20 mph. eventually the speedometer stop working on that trip. ever since that day the speedometer has been jerky and sometimes reporting the wrong speed or not working at all. *jb

2004 chevy tahoe speedometer and associated gauges read erratic. ongoing problem, speedometer never goes below 80 mph, even when standing still. don't want to pay the suggested $500-600 to fix when gm should pay for it. i consider this to be a considerable safety risk. *nm

I own a 2004 chevy tahoe which has 46k miles. my speedometer is acting erratically. it will not drop lower than 70 mph, often not dropping below 80 and even 90 mph. it will top out on the freeway and even driving down streets. i am being told this is common and being quoted having to replace the entire cluster at over $1k out of pocket. please have chevy recall this dangerous malfunction that is obviously a common occurrence. please make them pay for their poor workmanship and protect hard working consumers who simply cannot afford to pay for chevrolet's poor workmanship. *jb

My '04 chevy tahoe's speedometer, with only 40,000 miles, just quite working and is stuck on 55 even when it sits on the garage. after seeing hundreds of similar complaints on-line, it appears to be a widespread problem with similar gm models. *jb

My recently purchased 2004 chevrolet taho z71 has approximately 40,000 miles on it. the speedometer is grossly inaccurate and functions erratically when it does function. shows 30 mph even when parked, but that value jumps around. no trigger event, it just started doing it. consequences are that i don't know what my real speed is and this creates a hazard in traffic. i have not had time to research the problem. based upon my searches i see this is a common problem with a number of gm vehicles. gm needs to issue a recall and fix this problem rather than soaking up our money in repair costs. *jb

We have seen dozen of incidents in the past few months where the speedometer began ticking, became jerky, or stopped working all together. sometimes it will display a speed obviously lower than the actual speed (like 30 on the highway where we are going at least 55). other times, it will sit at 0 while the car is cruising down the road. this problem is intermittent. sometime stopping and restarting the car fixes it. we will go a week or more without the problem and sometime we see it multiple times in one day. we have not repaired the issue yet. internet searching indicates the average repair cost to be between $500 and $1,200. similar searching also indicates that this has been seen by at least hundreds of people on variations of the tahoe (suburban, avalanche, etc). there is even someone on ebay who has a hole business around fixing broken instrument clusters for these vehicles. *jb

I drive a 2004 tahoe ls. i am a salesman and drive quite a bit and have racked up around 95,000 miles to this day. while driving, about a year ago, i noticed my speedometer acting erratically. the needle would jump or lurch past each number as it ascended through the numbers on the speedometer. it was more noticeable in the 55 to 75mph range. the speed was still accurate so i viewed it as a non-issue. however, as time went on the accuracy began to degrade as i started noticing the speedometer would stop at 40 mph while i was driving highway speeds. the degradation has continued up to now where i am lucky if the needle even moves off of 0 mph. when the needle does move it freezes at about 15 mph forcing me to guess at my speed by monitoring the tachometer. this is a pretty dangerous situation and i would like to assume gm would look to remedy this situation quickly. the alternative is for the consumer to foot the bill of a $500-$1100 repair cost for a manufacturer's defect as many dealers already know that the cluster needs to be replaced. this is a well-documented issue for gms built in the 2003 to 2005 model years which we, as consumers who have already invested at least $40,000 on these vehicles, need to see remedied. p.s. the 07 ford expedition and expedition el appear to be very nice

So many... where do i start? 1) at 9,000 mi. intermediate shaft was replaced due to a popping feeling in the steering, at 16,000 mi. it is doing the same thing again. 2) at 9000 miles the instrument cluster was replaced due to a faulty tach motor making a buzzing/rattling sound, started making noise again at 13,000 miles took to dealer and said there is nothing wrong. 3) headlights flicker on and off on turns has been to the dealer 5 times since it had 9000 mi. 1st 2 times replaced a plug on alternator and said it was fixed, was not then said the found a bad connector still did not fix the problem. the problem still exists contacted gm and they were no help. 4) exhaust has been popping since new and sometimes after cool down sounds like something exploded 5) engine makes a noise when warmed up took in for service at 12000 miles and they cleaned oil pump pickup tube and said the oil pressure was not correct. this did not fix the problem took back in at 15000 and they stated no problem was found i was told the engine noise was normal. 6) the brakes pulsated when new took back at 59 mi. i was told to drive it and it would get better. started again at 9000 mi. and they turned the rotors. brakes started making a cracking noise in the front took in 3 times found no problem yet when i picked the vehicle up the last time at 15,000 mi the noise went away only to come back a week later. 7) when idling the vehicle vibrates bad!!!! dash will rattle and you can feel it in the steering wheel. i was told this was normal when the a/c was on yet it's worse when the a/c is off. now that a/c is making a terrible noise from inside the engine compartment and inside the climate control box area. 8) engine has a miss at idle. *jb
