EA10004GENERAL MOTORS LLC05/23/201007/18/2011Interior Door Handle Laceration Risk
The investigated concern involved chrome plating on interior door handles that could peel or separate from the plastic base material.this de-lamination could result in a sharp edge and pose a risk of laceration.in some cases, consumers reported minor hand/skin lacerations.of these reported injuries, the vast majority of injuries were to adults.ninety percent of claims associated with interior door handle de-lamination were related to the front doors.in addition to the above tahoe/yukon vehicles, other gmt 900 series c/k vehicles (avalanche, escalade, sierra, silverado, and suburban) have a trim level that utilizes the chrome plated interior door handles and were included in the analysis.the resultant population group had a total of 746 complaint reports with 309 injury incidents and 43,619 unique vin regular warranty claims over a combined 451,745 vehicle population.the door handle supplier was changed in september 2006 with new tooling and process in place by october 2006.the base population prior to the september 2006 vendor change accounted for the bulk (or 89%) of all complaints and comparable injury reports and warranty claims.due to the nature of the failure (thin chrome plating peeling off the door handle), only minor hand/skin laceration injuries similar to a paper cut were recorded.all but a few did not require professional medical treatment such as surgical or liquid sutures (i.e. stitches).less than 10% of injury reports had specifically involved a 3-10 year old child.this was due to the fact that 90% of the claims were associated with door handles located in the front seating area (where the window glass panels usually have less solar tinting than rear window glass panels) where children are not normally seated. in july 2010, gm issued a special coverage policy (scp 09239) on the base vehicles to extend the warranty coverage to 10 years/100k miles.recent data indicate that the base population complaint and injury reporting have subsided since the implementation of the scp campaign.in june 2011, gm added the remaining interim population (sep-oct 2006) to the scp.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

The statistical data regarding problem experience in the table above are net counts for unique vehicles.review of information in pe09-044 discloses that while accounting for approximately two-thirds of the total population, my 2007 subject vehicles are cited in more than 90 percent of the consumer complaints, injury reports, and warranty claims, respectively.in addition, improvements in the door handle manufacturing process during the my 2007 production resulted in a decline in the occurrence of peeling/flaking of the thin chrome plating.other environmental factors were also identified that may have influenced the occurrence of the condition which poses the alleged safety risk.additional analysis is required to identify the specific vehicles most susceptible to peeling or separation of the chrome plating from the handle, and to assess the significance of its occurrence.an engineering analysis has been opened to facilitate further study of this issue for my 2007 subject vehicle.

2007 chevrolet tahoe. consumer states after driving on the highway for 15 minutes or so the tire low pressure indicator light on the instrument panel came on *tgw the consumer stated before he took the vehicle to the dealer, the air was checked several times, with no indication of a problem. the consumer then took the vehicle to the dealer, where they replaced the sensor in the right rear tire. however, the problem continued. the consumer went to another dealer, where they ran a test and found no problem. after filing a complaint, the consumer went back to the second dealer where they found a lock problem. they replaced and reprogrammed the rcdlr. the consumer stated the problem is ongoing. also, the doors locked on their own on a number of occasions. *jb

I have a 2007 chevy tahoe. since i bought the car these are some of the issues i have had with the car- all within the first year - some issues are ongoing. three of the four door handles are frayed and cause cuts. the center console was literally coming apart at the seams. i can hear the sound of wind very loudly with the windows up. shortly after i bought the car - i returned to the service dept. at the dealer (moreno valley chevrolet) advising them that the door locks are not properly operating with the key fob and that the sound of wind was/is very loud and the tires are making noise. well , they replaced, reset, and whatever else to the door locks - and the electronic fob still did not (and does not) work. even after three (or four) attempts to reslove this - i have to use the key, the fob does not work. the dvd player plays at will. at one of those visits - where i advised of excessive noise, the dealer replaced three of my tires and my dvd player - without my request. the service tech says - oh, they hooked you up. i asked and asked why they replaced these things and no one, including the service manager, had an answer. and still - the tires wear unevenly, are loud, and the ride is not smooth and the dvd player plays when it wants to. i took my car to jiffy lube for an oil change and the guy there said, one day, your tires are going to fall off, this (what the name was-i can't recall) is broken...it's just a matter of time before it falls apart. i took it to the dealer (moreno valley chevy) and they said cannot duplicate. never, ever another chevy.

Our 2007 chevy tahoe has had to have 2 door handles replaced in the last 2 years. both handles have experienced the exact same issue. the piece which connects the handle to the door snaps allowing it to move freely from the doors. these incidents both occurred when the person entering the vehicle tried to pull on the handle to open the door. one incident was due to my wife opening the door and the other occurred when a 14 year old tried to open the door. we have had it replaced once and now have to do the same again. since this is a $400 expenditure with parts and service each time. this issue was not covered under warranty so we have to pay for this ourselves.

My child attempted to open rear door on my 2007 chevy tahoe ltz. one side of the handle broke, thus pulling one side away from the door and pinching her hand somehow! this is the 2nd handle to break on this vehicle. i personally went to open my passenger side door and it broke right off! what if we were in a crash and needed to be pulled out and the door handles break off?!? very dangerous! upon investigating this defect i have learned this is not an uncommon incident! see following link http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/trfog7j2eokh998g2 i hope we can see a recall out of this!

I am writing to advise a complaint regarding our 2007 chevrolet tahoe ltz door handles. in april 2011, the outside drivers side door handle came partially unattached from the body of the vehicle. the handle came loose only on one side (the far left) leaving it attached from only the far right. the exact same thing happened to the drivers side rear passenger within the last week. that is 2 handles in 2 months. my 5 year old daughter pinched her finger in the unattached space while attempting to open the door. i have taken our vehicle to the dealer and they are charging $172 per handle for the repairs. vehicle is a 2007 with only 25,000 miles.

2007 tahoe interior door handles. peeling plastic chrome. cut fingers
02/01/201129000
I have a 2007 chevrolet tahoe and over the past 3 months, the door handles have begun to come loose and pull off the vehicle. i've done research online and i've found that this is a very common problem. the piece is made of plastic and snaps into place and thus has become loose. all 4 of my doors are experiencing this problem and we've been told that gm is not covering this under warranty (i have an extended warranty as well) because it is considered a trim piece for the vehicle. this is another reason why i won't buy another gm car and hope they fail next time. i can't beleive the government bailed them out and i would like a return of my portion of taxes given to them for their ignorance, lack of quality and lack of professionalism.

I have a 2007 chevy tahoe and both the driver and passenger interior door handles have began to peel and are very sharp. my wife and myself are very careful when we open or close the doors so as to not cut ourselves, but my 2 year old son was in the front seat while i was cleaning the inside of the car and cut his hand on the door handles. it wasn't bad enough to need stitches but believe this is a defect that gm should replace for free, to prevent worse cuts from happening.

Interior door handles on 2007 chev tahoe are sharp to the touch and we have received several cuts.

I currently own a 2007 chevy tahoe. the chrome on the passenger door handle is peeling. i have cut myself several times when attempting to open or close the door. short term solution was to put tape on the handle or a band aid. i already have 6 cuts (just like paper cuts) it happens frequently. please investigate.

I just read that the nhtsa is investigating the interior door handles on the 2007 tahoe. i have had this problem many times, and so has my wife. it's the seam where the two pieces of 'fake' chrome come together at the top of the door handle - think of a razor sharp piece of plastic every time you try to open your door. i took it into the dealer (john l. sullivan, roseville, ca) where we bought it and they said there was no recall and that there was nothing they could do - pretty typical of a dealership i find. so i've just been dealing with it; that and nasty cuts on my fingers. i finally took a razor and shaved the pieces down, but now the white plastic of the handle is exposed. it looks horrible.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet tahoe. he stated when entering his vehicle he noticed that his vehicle had been vandalized and the rear seats where missing. a police report was filed. the vehicle was inspected by an insurance adjuster who determined that there is no security plate behind the drivers side door handle which will prevent someone from braking the door handle and getting into the vehicle. he contacted the manufacturer and was informed that there where no current recalls on the vehicle so no compensation would be offered. he was informed by the repair shop that this is a common problem with the vehicle door handle failing with the year make and model. the vehicles where vandalized and the contact feels that the manufacturer should have the plates installed in the vehicles to prevent theft. the failure mileage was 12,805 and the current mileage was 13,000. bl

My wife and i have been victims of the faulty chrome plating peeling from the interior door release handles, causing a razor type cut to tips of our fingers therefore causing loss of blood. the interior door release handles have been replaced 3 times within the last 10 months resulting in failure soon after. the last incident happened 6/28/2008 when i exited the vehicle which cut my finger. there is no visual warning when the chrome plating seam fails, but to receive the razor 'like' cut to the finger which is very painful. our level of concern for the safety of our children and family members that have blood ailments such has diabetes type ii,enema, is of great concern. i have been subjected to having to wrap tape on the existing handles that have already been replaced to prevent what could cause permanent bodily injury which i feel is totally unacceptable. if further injuries result in the use of this vehicle, i am requesting the assistance of your organization for a permanent resolution to this issue. your concern will be greatly appreciated from my family and myself. *tr

While parked at a restaurant my tahoe was broke into. the theft was done with a small flat head screwdriver under the key lock in the seal between the handle and the door. i couldn't even tell. the police showed me where to look and said it was very common. i took it to two dealerships and a body shop. one dealer and the body shop said that this was very common and the previous year model had the same issue. the alarm doesn't go off because the screwdriver is sensed as a key. gm customer service filed a complaint by me and closed it in the same phone call. they said to take it up with my insurance company. it should not be that easy to break into. it is going to cost $700 to replace the handle and paint the door and i must replace the gps unit that was stolen and a check to my bank was also taken. *tr

Several problems with new 2007 tahoe, including recall hvac, replace dvd, replace radio, vibrating left driver's mirror, back door molding, repaired passenger door power locks...however, main and irreparable issue is the poor fm & xm radio reception which fades in and out while driving. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet tahoe. the contact stated that the electric rear liftgate opens while driving 50 mph. the failure also occurs while the vehicle is parked. the liftgate opens just enough so that all of the doors continuously lock and unlock and the interior lights illuminate. after the first failure, the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they attempted to repair it without changing any parts. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on four occasions. the contact is being forced to hire an attorney to resolve this issue. she stated that chevrolet is not keeping their word and the failure is a safety hazard for her and her children. the current mileage is 11,000 and failure mileage was 3,500.
