EA04021GENERAL MOTORS CORP.08/03/200411/04/2004BRAKE LAMP FAILURE04V527000
Gm states that some brake/tail lamp bulbs can prematurely become inoperative due to malfunctioning brake/tail lamp sockets.on march 2, 2004, gm initiated a 6-year/72,000 mile special policy for 989,487 subject vehicles to inspect and replace the rear brake/tail lamp bulb socket assemblies.on april 4, 2004, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe04-032) based on consumer complaints alleging brake lights not operating when the brake pedal is depressed.on august 3, 2004 odi upgraded pe04-032 to an engineering analysis (ea04-021).by letter dated october 27, 2004 gm notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa # 04v527) covering subject vehicles that were not already repaired under gm's special policy.my 2004 subject vehicles built after august 8, 2003 contain improved brake lamp assemblies and are not included in the recall.gm dealers will install the improved brake lamp assembly on subject vehicles built on august 8, 2003 and earlier.the action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.
PE04032GENERAL MOTORS CORP.04/06/200408/03/2004BRAKE LAMP FAILURE
The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation on model year (my) 2002-04 chevrolet trailblazer vehicles.gm reports that other vehicles sharing this platform and brake lamp design are the my 2002-2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext; gmc envoy, xl, xuv; oldsmobile bravada and 2004 buick rainier.complaints allege that the rear brake lamp does not operate when the brake pedal is depressed.there is no indication to the driver from inside the vehicle that one or more brake lamps bulbs are not functioning.gm found that heat from the bulb could deform the lamp socket, produce electrical arcing and an inoperative bulb.to correct the condition, gm changed the bulb to a bulb that transmits less heat to the socket and changed the socket to a thermoplastic polymer to improve thermal stability.these changes were implemented into production vehicles on october 1, 2003.gm implemented a special policy by notifying consumers that if they should experience a brake lamp failure to go to their gm dealership to have the circuit board containing the brake lamp replaced along with new bulbs.this policy is good for the first 6 years or 72,000 miles of the life of the vehicle.odi will upgrade this investigation to ea 04-021 and include the above mentioned vehicles.

The rear right and left brake lights and rear turn signal lights have burned out repeated. i purchased the 2002 chevrolet trailblazer in december 2001. the problem first started to occur when the brake lights failed at 30,000 miles in 2003. i had to replace the circuit boards the lights plug into at my own cost to fix the problem. there was a recall to replace the circuit boards in 2004, nhtsa #04v527000, which i had performed on the vehicle. subsequently the circuit boards burned out again a few years later. i took the vehicle back to the dealership and they said they wouldn't replace the circuit boards at their expense. i then purchased and installed the circuit boards myself. in 2010 the circuit boards burned out again. i took the vehicle back to the dealership and they investigated and said they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle other than the circuit board. they charged me $191.50 to investigate the problem and change out the circuit boards again. this is a safety issue because the rear brake lights and rear turn signal lights not working increases the risk of a crash. i received a ticket/warning on 2-2-11 for the brake lights not working but expect the brake lights will become inoperative again soon as this is the 5th set of circuit boards that have been placed in the vehicle and they keep burning out, and chevrolet/general motors hasn't supplied a satisfactory correction to solve the problem. current mileage is 159,000 and the problem started at 30,000.

My headlights started to flicker one seasonably winter day. i had the heater motor replaced 2 months prior to this incident and back wiper motor just a month before this.then the heater motor cut out, and did so numerous times as i traveled on a 20 degree day. it seemed to run fine after that for the most part that day. i later got into it and again headlights flickered and heater motor cut out. especially when i would accelerate or turn to the right. i replaced the battery, alternator and had ground wires cleaned only to have it recur a week later. i do most of my driving at night and when the lights went out and came back on i had had enough. this had become quite costly and my mechanic was at a loss as to what to do next. i took it to a chevy dealer and traded it in on another vehicle, as i can no longer afford to keep spending money on a mystery issue.

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trail blazer. the contact stated the right head light is now pointed up in the air at a higher angle then it used to be. the dealer looked at the vehicle and stated there was no adjustment for the headlight. the contact stated the left headlight is point straight ahead and feels the right headlight should be pointed in the same direction. when the vehicle was placed in front of a wall to inspect the angle of the head lights, the right light hit the wall about 8 inches higher than the left. the failure mileage and current mileages was 77784.rl

2002 trailblazer acted like transmission going out, took to dealer they upgraded computer. front right low beam wired burned and melted, took to dealer they wanted to charge 250.00 plus labor for light assembly when all it needed was a piggy plug, bought plug at napa and fixed myself. never have had two back lights working at same time... cant take to dealer to get the recall work because it seems that these vehicles are using a weak oil pump and my trailblazer has been in shop for last month or more waiting to be fixed. the weak oil pump caused damage to rod bearings, main bearings, and crankshaft. gm says out of warranty and my customer service specialist said i'm sorry about 10 times but she was still closing my folder and marking dissatisfied. she can't help me because i'm out of warranty. i hate this vehicle. i have found quite a few recalls but can't do most because its in the shop. i never got any recall notices.*ak

I have a 2002 chevy trailblazer on which i has replaced the right brake light 6 times, and left brake light 3 times in 44,000 miles. i have a relative who also owns the same make/model and is about even with that count. chevy has offered to extend the warranty and replace these lights and sockets for free but this does not fix the problem as i have had 3 light failures since my socket was last replaced as has my relative. it is apparent that chevy is not willing to fix this problem, only patch it up. with tail lights, you only discover it is out if a cop hands you a ticket, or someone else is kind enough to tell you when you stop. given the frequency with which this occurs, it is very likely that you would end up driving around with no brake lights at all and not realize it.

Trailblazer service engine light on, engine reving, seems to be fan clutch stuck in high speed, causes poor acceleration, poor gas mileage, and costs over 500 dollars to repair. dealer in small town states they have replaced several in the same year model truck. due to the high cost of this repair, i am forced to drive my vehicle until i can come up with the money to repair it. hopefully it will not damage any other parts in the mean time. there seem to be several complaints that deal with this same thing. also, the rear brake lights keep going out .

The driver-side brake light bulb repeatedly burns out (3 times in as many weeks). appears that the bulb doesn't make a snug fit in the socket. i found a tsb from gm regarding this. the dealership refused to correct the problem under warranty (48k miles). i purchased the replacement parts listed in the tsb, replacing the board, which resulted in a snug fit between bulb and socket. no issues since. this is probably related to defect investigation pe04032. this is on a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer lt with 2wd and i6 engine.

Brake lights on chevrolet trailblazers are continuously going out. every single trailblazer i see on the road that is not brand new has either one brake light missing or both. went to dealership to question if there was a recall on this incident and said no, but has to replace circuit boards on models of trailblazers. this is not fair if the vehicle is no longer brand new and without a warranty. this defect should not be at the cost of the owner for a defect of this caliber. this is dangerous to other drivers if they are not able to see the vehicle braking in front of them. *la

Ongoing brake light failure on '02 chev trailblazer. in the last year or more, i replaced the driver-side brake light bulb four times and once for the back-up bulb. most times the bulb looks fine but i replace anyway. sometimes the brake light works intermittently. according to chev parts dealer, the sockets on the circuit board gets corroded and causes a short, so i replaced the circuit board (out of pocket costs) on 2/14/04 but the brake light still doesn't light up. i loved driving the vehicle but this could be a deal- killer for gm in the future. they had better recall and fix this issue, or there will be several others like me who will go to another manufacturer.*ak

Brake and tail light on 2002 chevy trailblazer ext have failed on four occasions since leasing this new car on 5/24/02. service people have been great in fixing the problems. this first incident on 11/6/2002 involved only one tail and brake light but the fourth incident on 11/21/2003 involved both tail and brake light. the failure comes without warning and only is noticed when a good citizen driver informs me. the latest incident was noticed when a driver almost rear ended me because both lights were out. fortunately, the top (dole) light worked. the dates of the repairs are: 11/6/02, 8/7/03; 12/23/03; 11/21/03. in a related problem the windshield wipers and/or washers have faied on three occasions: 7/2/02; 11/6/02 and 12/23/02. *la

2002 trailblazer ls. left brake light continues to fail. each time i pull the bulb out, it is ok, so i put it back in and it works for a day or two. i have now noticed that it seems to work longer if you pull the bulb out slightly instead of seating it fully into the socket. this is a very common problem in this vehicle, according to my son, an ase certified mr. goodwrench technician, employed for years by gmc and chevrolet dealerships. brake lights going out are going to eventually cause a fatal accident, and i don't think chevrolet wants that! make them accountable!!! *jb

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer ls. i currently have 37,000 miles and therefore am out of my initial warranty period. the problem i am having is with my brake lights. i have taken my vehicle to the dealer twice to have my brake light circuit board replaced because water keeps getting into the area causing shorts in the board. water comes off the rear tires and directly underneath the tail light casing and makes contact with the circuit board because there is no protection for the board. now that my vehicle is out of warranty i am forced to continue replacing this item every time it occurs. this can cause serious problems because the brake lights are very important in traffic. also, individuals can be ticketed for this problem.*ak

Both left and right brake lights failed to operate. vehicle was bought new 7.5 months ago and has about 8000 miles. found the fuses good and the light bulb filaments good. while checking the light bulbs, i discovered that moving them slightly in the out direction, the lights would come on. upon examination, it appears the metal connection tabs within light socket and/or the bulb wire- type connections may have been damaged by heat. there is some discoloration on both. although the bulbs are not burned out, they will not work when fully seated into the socket - there is no electrical connection. they do work when pulled slightly out. i installed new bulbs which do work when fully seated. i now wonder how long it will be before this problem occurs again. i believe there may a design defect with either the socket or the bulb, where heat buildup in the connection was not taken into account. *jb

I experienced total brake light failure with no warning or indication on a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer with 44,000 miles (which i take very good care of)! i was sitting at a stop light and the nice driver behind me informed me that my car has no brake lights. he said that happens a lot with these cars, the brake light switch blows. i wish i had more time to talk to him, bill estes chevrolet in indianapolis charged me 200 dollars to diagnose the problem and put electrical tape around it. i nearly got rear ended driving to the dealer with my hazard lights on! at the dealer, the mechanic explained to me that when i applied the brake, the brake lamp switch harness was pinched between the bracket and something else. the documentation from the dealer reads like this: diag as shorted brake lamp switch harness aproximately 3 from brake lampswitch. repair harness and reroute away from braket. the only parts described were 'shop supplies' (electrical tape?). the customer service rep explained to me that they don't design these cars; indicating, that he thought it was a design issue. while i'm disappointed that we had to spend 189.54 to get the thing fixed, i am thankful that no one was hurt - i transport my 3 year old twins in this car. i am very disappointed in this issue and concerned for the safety for other drivers. i decided to check out the nhtsa website after i read on an internet chat room that there was consideration to ordering gm to recall the cars for this issue. *jb

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - HEADLIGHTS - HIGH/LOW BEAM DIMMER SWITCH
10/09/2004388006
2002 chevrolet trailblazer -- i have experience a reoccurring problem (about 6 times over the last couple of weeks) where the low beam headlights go off during operation of the vehicle. nothing i have found can force them to come back on; however, usually after 5 or 10 minutes they seem to return to the normal on condition by themselves. the high beams work ok, tail lights, dash lights, turn signals, etc. are not effected while the low beams are in this condition. additonally one day i noticed the day time running lights in this same state. i had the vehicle in the dealer, bill heard chevrolet (sanford, fl), and they were unable to reproduce the condition. i contacted gm/chevrolet, and they agreed that unless the condition could be reproduced, there would not authorize or make any attempt to replace any parts to attempt to correct the problem. this seems to be a rigid stance to take, especially since i never know when this can happen again, and it is obviously an extreme safety issue for not only myself and family, but others on the road with me at the time. i don't know how to proceed at this point, and don't know if this has been reported by any other owner.*ak

 1. other than several recalls for a faulty tail light, which still does not work properly on 2002 trailblazer did not have any major problems prior to the incident on september 10, 2005.*ak 1. while driving home on about the evening of september 10, 2005 my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer with 47,427 miles suddenly groaned loudly and rapidly decelerated approximately 1/4 mile from my house. i was able to get home at a speed of about five mph. when i arrived home i contacted my mechanic who said it sounded like a transmission problem. my mechanic looked at the vehicle and told me it was the transmission which he was unable to repair. he suggested i contact my dealer as he felt the vehicle did not have high enough mileage to warrant tranmission failure. i contacted tillery chevrolet in moriarty, nm where i purchased the vehicle and spoke with mr. glen tillery. he asked if i had purchased the extended warranty package. upon hearing i did not purchase the extended warranty package mr. tillery gave me the approximate price for his dealership to repair my vehicle. i felt his price was high and the dealership is located approximately 50 miles from my house which was too far to drive my vehicle in its condition. i received recommendations from other people and took my trailblazer to budget transmission in albuquerque, nm. budget looked at the transmission and stated it needed to be replaced which i authorized. when i picked up my vehicle the technician informed me my transmission failure was due to a faulty sunshell. the price to repair the vehicle was $1,813.68 3. the repairs included a rebuilt transmission and torque converter. the original parts are not available.

While driving 40 mph, the engine light illuminated, then the vehicle stalled. this caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle, hitting a wall. the consumer had the vehicle towed. the dealership tried to repair the vehicle 7 times, but did not resolve the problem. the air bag also failed to deploy during the accident. *ak the pcm failed due to a circuit inside, fluid leaked from the power steering hose, the engine revved high and was loud when the vehicle was started, the consumer saw sparks under the hood fuse block at the same time the gauges fluctuated and shorted, the right rear tail lights were inoperative, and the fuel gauge made a whirring sound when the vehicle was started. *sc *jb *cb

Purchased feb 1, 2002. since then have had nothing but problems. had into 4 different dearlerships fixing many problems but after each visit another problem occurs. from tail lights burning out, windhshield wiper motor failures, instrument cluster replaced, heater control panel replaced once, memory mirror modules replaced 2 times, heated seat switches replaced 2 times, rear window defogger/replaced entire rear window 1 time, battery replaced 1 time ( said battery was at fault for current problems) battery was fine and charged me $ 150 for new battery that was not the correct battery replacement, exhaust gasket became loose/loud and had to be replaced, the fuel pump replaced because it just cut off as i was on the expressway going approx 65 miles an hour, i had to get to the side of the road quickly- had to be towed to dealership. problem fixed, however after i picked it up then the current problem began. i could go on and on with the problems that i have had. present problem is that whenever i turn on the heat it dies out with no warning---just stops and stalls. dealership says they fixd it but upon pick up the problem still exists. gone to pick it up 2 times, but when i start it and put on heat, it dies all over again even after dealership claims they fixed it. i live in chicago and it has been a cold winter. almost caused a crash on another expressway on way home from having the airbag sensor and a complete brake job done and all fluids changed. this vehicle is not worth $ 37,000 and i feel it is time that gm accept some responsibility for this lemon of a vehicle. it is my only vehicle and i am still paying dearly for it but lately cannot even use it as it remains in one dealership after another at my expense. i will not purchase another vehicle from gm. i need help and answers as i am not getting anywhere even with this vehicle still under warranty.*ak

*la

I have had numerous of problems with my 2002 trailblazer. i have had to replace my rear tail light housing 3 times in the last year. i have also had to replace the clutch fan 3 times within 3 months. my hood keeps squeaking and has to be readjusted every other month. my instrument panel has gone out twice. the alarm also works when it wants to and the passenger side seat belt always locks up. on 6/13/03 it left finally left me stranded on the side of the road on the way to california. i live in arizona and was traveling with my wife, mother-in-law and our 3 year old daughter. i had to pay for a rental car and had to submit to gm to reimburse me for the rental car. by reading all the complaints on these 2002 trailblazers i think we should all get together and do a class act law suit towards gm. e-mail me with your thoughts. jorgutierr5@aol.com. *nlm
