Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, a fuel filter fitting can become disconnected. if this were to occur while attempting to start the engine, a no-start condition would result and fuel would be pumped out the fuel filter onto the ground.
Consequence SummaryIf the fitting becomes disconnected while the vehicle is in motion, the engine would stop due to inadequate fuel supply and cause a loss of power steering assist. if an ignition source were present, fuel leakage from a disconnected fuel filter fitting could result in a fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the fuel filter quick connect retainers. owner notification began september 20, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020. gmc at 1-800-462-8782, or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.

PE07013GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/12/200707/10/2007FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
Odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle.gm states, the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak.corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment.odi has upgraded this pe to engineering analysis (ea07-009) to further assess this issue.
EA07009GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/10/200708/28/2008FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.

Lately, and intermittently, when the gas tank is 1/2 full or less and a sharp turn is made, the gas gauge goes to e, the low gas light comes on and the car will not go more than 20 mph as if it is losing power. it's most scary when it occurs making a turn onto freeway entrance ramp and i am trying to get power to enter moving traffic. typically, i have to pull over, turn the car off and restart to get the car to run normal.

I was driving home from work and started hearing the trucks undercarriage start to rattle and grind on the bumps of the road. i had a sudden loss of power on engine and it wouldnt respond to my pressing on the gas. i believed that i had gas in the truck because the gauge read half full and apparently i was out of gas. so i proceeded to pull into a gas station and as soon as we filled up, the truck would not start! i saw that my check engine light was on and had to ask for a jumpstart to get it started again. at another time and date again the truck went dead, i asked for a jumpstart and the vehicle would not respond. i now had to buy a new battery because the car damaged the original battery and now with the new battery installed my car starts but will not stay on without me pressing on the gas while in park gear. i believe something may be defective with the electrical gauges, fuel delivery system, and suspension.

I feel that even if you have had a recall issue once and the situation continues to happen then it needs to be fixed until the problem is solved i have contact gm several time and nothing has been done to ratify my problem with the windsheild wipers and the 4 wheel drive and several other recall issues this is sad i say we need a class action law suit i am not one to to take legal action but for people that have this kind of money and to not fix their problem that they put out on the roads for us to drive safely is shameful

When i drive my chevrolet trailblazer, the gas gauge is all over. i can have a full tank one minute, and half a mile down the road have 3/4 of a tank. also it does the same thing when it has a quarter of a tank, it will say it has 1/4 of a tank, and a mile down the road it just drops and the low fuel light comes on. also i can park the vehicle with about 3/8 of a tank, and start it later, and it says empty, and the low fuel light is on. we also have a 2004 gmc envoy that does the same thing. this has been an issue for both vehicles the entire time we have owned them. both were bought in 2010. this occurs every tank of gas, and the actions are not always the exact same, so it is hard to tell if we actually need gas or not, sometimes they are actually almost out other times the have approximately 1/4 of a tank left. we have not done anything to correct the issue because we do not know what is causing it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 40 mph, there was an overpowering gasoline odor in the vehicle. she stated that the service engine warning light was illuminated on the dashboard and the failure persisted for several months before the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer advised that the fuel tank was leaking where the filler neck met the tank body. she was advised that the fuel tank assembly would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 162,121 and the current mileage was 162,563.

Parked trailblazer in garage last night and this morning smelled gas in garage. underneath the truck was a puddle of gasoline that had leaked out. it seams to be leaking from below the rear seat and middle of the vehicle. i am reading about many similar problems and concerns that other owners have about this potentially dangerous situation. i would like to know if there are recalls or other means of getting some help so i can repair the problem asap. hopefully not at my expense. thank you for the opportunity

Wife put fuel in the vehicle because it was down to a 1/4 tank and it is now the winter months, we dont like to be below half a tank. she drove it home and later that nite i got into the vehicle and noticed the gauge read empty and the light was on. i went to put fuel in it and at 5 dollars the tank for fuel. the gas gauge show empty upon even after filling the tank. the fuel level in the tank falls to a sufficient level to cause the gauge to display erratic and false readings. nothing has been done to correct the failure which continues to be a constant problem. fuel level now must be estimated through the use of the trip odometer the gauge reads full when you first start the vehicle and sometimes stays at full or reads empty with the light on. called local garage they said sounds like a bad fuel level sensor common problem with chevy trailblazers from 02-09

I have been smelling a gasoline odor on the side of my suv where the fuel door/fuel tank is located. research on the internet yielded many trailblazer owners reporting fuel tank/sending unit/pump corrosion resulting in a fuel leak. a family member of mine just had this exact problem repaired on a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. i believe this same issue is starting with my 2002 trailblazer. i replaced the gas cap to eliminate the possibility of the gas odor coming from the tank fill area, but the odor persisted. the odor resembles an actual gasoline spill and/or leak and not just gasoline vapor odor, ie: filling the tank. like i stated before, internet research yields many trailblazer owners reporting this issue and having to pay for costly repairs. any issue regarding the fuel system/gasoline, in my opinion, should be an immediate safety concern. i have not received any information from gm in regards to a recall bulletin. i am going to conduct more investigation, but in the meantime the smell of a gasoline leak is unmistakable. i hope this information is helpful and i hope that a recourse regarding this issue and its repairs can be formulated. in the meantime i feel that a major safety issue is present and needs fast and efficient attention. thank you.

On 9/25/09, my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer stalled and lost power steering when i attempted to make a right turn. when i tried to restart the vehicle, gasoline was caused to spill on the roadway. the vehicle was towed to my local repair shop, and it was determined the fuel filter fitting failed. my vehicle had 39, 993 miles on it at that time. after my vehicle was repaired, further research revealed a recall had been issued under number 02v121000 for the same problem described above. i contacted gm/chevrolet, and was advised that recall did not pertain to my vin, nor were there any other recalls issued for my vehicle addressing similar failures. it is obvious that my vehicle should have also been included in the recall mentioned above. *tr

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer lt. for the last two weeks there is a very strong odor of gasoline. apparently it is leaking from the top of the tank. i understand that gm is paying for repairs of this problem on 2002 trailblazer ext's under a special coverage warranty. if my vehicle has the same problem the ext, why isn't gm applying that coverage to the lt? *tr

During routine driving i noticed a odor of gas from inside my vehicle. upon inspection i discovered gas leaking from above the gas tank and onto the ground. i brought my vehicle to the dealership and was informed that the fuel module had rotted and therefore was leaking gas onto the top of the gas tank. the gas would then collect on top of the gas tank and cause a strong odor of gas inside the vehicle. i had the fuel module replaced for a total cost of $810.52

2002 trailblazer ltz the current and failure kilometres are 106,545 km. the vehicle began to have a strong odor of gas inside and out. it seemed as if we were consuming gas at a very high rate. had the vehicle checked and it was not visible where the vehicle was dripping fuel. nothing was found. later took vehicle to the dealer and was found to have corroded fuel lines on the fuel module sending unit on the top of the fuel tank. at a repair cost of $850.00. we feel this is a safety issue as it could have caught on fire at any time. we understand there is an investigation report (nhtsa action#ea07-009) being done. this manufacturers defect is a serious threat to people driving this type of vehicle. parts such as these should last longer than 100,000 kilometers. we have retained old part from dealer. *tr

My 2002 trailblazer began leaking gas around the fuel filter connection. my guess is a rate of around 5 gallons in 20 minutes. vehicle kept running. vehicle has a recall on this with nhtsa campaign number 02v121000. i belieive i had this recall 02016 - fuel filter connect performed by hendrick pontiac buick on 6/4/02 . the recall has the following decription on the nhtsa database: on certain sport utility vehicles, a fuel filter fitting can become disconnected. if this were to occur while attempting to start the engine, a no-start condition would result and fuel would be pumped out the fuel filter onto the ground. if the fitting becomes disconnected while the vehicle is in motion, the engine would stop due to inadequate fuel supply and cause a loss of power steering assist. if an ignition source were present, fuel leakage from a disconnected fuel filter fitting could result in a fire.dealers will replace the fuel filter quick connect retainers. i examined the filter connect and found the snap-on part of the filter was not snapped into the holes in the hose connection. the snap was actually rotated about 90 degrees. this was not holding the hose in all the way but just enough to cause a major gas leak and to send gas to the engine. i believe the fuel filter connects are a bad design. 1 of 3 things went wrong. 1) the recall was never performed even though the service paperwork said it was. gm needs to replace the connectors because they are poorly designed and can cause a fire/explosion. 2) a certified gm technician installed the connection to the filter improperly. the connection should be designed so that it automatically aligns itself to the snap or does not slide on. this is not a technician problem, it is a problem with the design of the snap connections. 3) the connection worked itself worked loose over time with the regular bumps of everyday driving. in this case, it is also a problem with the design of the snap connection.

Since purchasing the vehicle, i have experienced problems putting gas in the vehicle. the gas pump keeps stopping - as if the car is full. this happens frequently, but not always. it doesn't matter which station i go to. the dealer replaced some filler hoses or something after i had taken it in a few times, but they were not able to correct the problem. it is very annoying and sometimes i only fill the car up 1/2 - 3/4 full because i can't tell if it is full or not. i squeeze the handle and it immediately kicks off. this also happens when others are fueling the vehicle. it doesn't matter if i turn the nozzle different directions or pull it part of the way out of the vehicle. i also frequently overfill the vehicle because i don't know that it is full. i noticed someone else reported this as a consumer complaint - so it's not just my trailblazer with the problem! it takes a long time to fill the tank when you can only put 1 second worth of gas in at a time! now my warranty is out, so i am probably stuck with this problem as long as i have the vehicle.

I kept smelling the strong odor of gasoline in the garage or even in the parking lot for about a day after i filled my fuel tank on my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. there sometimes was a wet spot on the garage floor near the filler cap that appeared to be gasoline. the check engine soon light eventually came on. the dealer could find nothing wrong when they pressure-tested the fuel system but the computer fault code indicated an evaporative emissions failure. they re-set the light, but the problem persisted and the light soon came back on the next time i re-fueled. i read somewhere on the nets website about other trailblazer owners who had a broken check ball in their filler necks. i suggested this to the dealer who confirmed that this was my problem too. they charged me nearly $300 to repair the tank neck. i feel that this is the result of defective emissions control device and therefore should be covered under warranty. (i have only 50 k miles on the vehicle). at what point does something like this become a recall since this seems to be happening to others as well? *nm

Metal plate with all of the connections to the plastic gas tank rotted away, causing fuel vapors to enter the vehicle. we only have 38,000 miles on the truck. tank design will hold mud and water in a depression on the top of the fuel tank, promoting rust holes, that not only allowed vapors to escape also leaked gas when the tank was filled. *nm

The fuel tank filler neck detached from the tank. as a result, when filling the vehicle with fuel it poured out onto the ground. *ak

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer. when my vehicle had 62,509 mileage i parked the vehicle at a friend's house. the vehicle leaked a large puddle of fuel on his newly sealed driveway. when i took it in to service the fuel level sender was replaced because the inlet and/or outlet tubes on top of the fuel sender were corroded and leaking fuel. this was a premature failure since the design should have been validated to 100,000 miles +.*ak

While driving 40 mph, the engine light illuminated, then the vehicle stalled. this caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle, hitting a wall. the consumer had the vehicle towed. the dealership tried to repair the vehicle 7 times, but did not resolve the problem. the air bag also failed to deploy during the accident. *ak the pcm failed due to a circuit inside, fluid leaked from the power steering hose, the engine revved high and was loud when the vehicle was started, the consumer saw sparks under the hood fuse block at the same time the gauges fluctuated and shorted, the right rear tail lights were inoperative, and the fuel gauge made a whirring sound when the vehicle was started. *sc *jb *cb
