I started my trailblazer and let it warm for a few minutes. the truck idle was louder then normal but did not knock or miss. i put the truck into drive and pulled out of my driveway. as i was driving down the street i noticed the rpms shoot up and the truck slow, i pulled over and put it into park, the truck idled loudly. i put the truck into drive again and the rpm would rise with little power to the wheels. i nursed it up to highway speed and at higher speeds around 60 the problem seems to not be there. the truck continues to do this in the lower gears and at lower speeds. i notice the oil pressure goes up when this happens and i worry of doing more damage. i have already had a wiper module replaced that was recalled but never replaced before the vehicle was sold to me.

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer that has a defective transmission. the transmission has been completely replaced twice at approximately 24,000 miles and 45,000 miles. i learned recently on august 7, 2012, at just under 75,000 miles, that the transmission hoses were leaking fluid and that the transmission would need to be completely replaced again. i think general motors released a defective sports utility vehicle if the transmission needs to be replace approximately every 25,000 miles and these automobiles should be recalled as it could cause a safety hazard if the transmission stops working when someone is driving a chevrolet trailblazer. *tr

My chevrolet trailblazer blew its transmission for the 1st time on 6/1/06 at 47000 miles. the repair quote was $2700 but chevy ended up covering all but $200 as a warranty repair. on 2/24/12, it blew its transmission for the 2nd time at 94000 miles. the car still has its original brakes, but is now on transmission #3. the repair quote this time is $3038. obviously there is a design defect in this transmission, as the car is just driven under average conditions (no towing, no heavy loads, etc.)

I have had multiple issues with my 2002 chevy trailblazer where the 4x4 selector switch will not work, or while driving at highway speeds the vehicle will be put into four wheel drive while the selector switch is still turned on two wheel drive. the selector switch at times has not worked when i wanted to make the vehicle go into four wheel drive. i have found out the vehicle is in four wheel drive by having a hard time turning the front wheels and seeing the front tires spin on loose gravel even though i never switched the vehicle into four wheel drive and the selector switch states it's still in two wheel drive but the yellow light is lit up that it's in four wheel drive. i have complained multiple times to gm and have had the selector switch replaced 3 times but it still continues to happen. everytime that gm looks at it they say that it is working just fine. i have seen and heard that many other people are having the same problems with this. i feel there should be a safety recall put out for this drive selector switch.

I have a 2002 chevy trailblazer 4wd. the clutch fan is bad. from what the auto parts service center advised me, all clutch fans on the 2002 trailblazers should be recalled. the vehicle runs high rpm's when first starting. this is a safety hazards that the gov. should address with chevy. don't wait until someone loses a life, then act on this complaint. you would think after the firestone tire incident you people would work on the side of the consumer, after all, we do pay for your agency to operate. why is it the consumer always has to pay for big business when they are the ones who are a fault. when building any product, if it fails. then the gov. should enforce a recall. whether it be one or 20 complaints. the consumer has the right to be protected when purchasing any product. when a complaint is made. the you the gov. agency should act and make a recall. before someone gets hurt. it that simple. *tr

I bought the 2002 trailblazer on february 2008 drove it for about a month and a half total the rest of the time it has been back to the dealership for repairs. everything including the motor needed to be replaced, the transmission needs to be replaced just accelerated onto the gas heard a loud crack and the truck shook like an earthquake had hit, lost acceleration would not go any faster than 30-35 miles an hour and car would not disengage from neutral at first and the would not go into reverse., brakes have made a pulsation feeling and they were done days before i bought the vehicle and replaced again including rotors a month after i bought the vehicle, there have been too many crackling and metallic tinging noises that don't go away, the 4 wheel drive engages and disengages on it's own when driving 65-70 miles an hour. the steering wheel had a constant rubbing noise and dealer told me all of my complaints were nothing detrimental and basically blew me off. the truck jerks alot on it's own doesn't matter if i am in motion or if i put it into gear or park it jerks. i don't feel safe in this vehicle, it seems to be possessed. i am scared to death to drive it, so i have stopped driving it. i don't know what to do. my first car was a chevy and now this one, i will never own another chevy product. i don't know what to do, i don't want this. i fear my own and everyone else's life!! *tr

I have a 2002 trailblazer that is currently getting it's 3rd transmission installed due to failure. the first one was replaced in 2005 at 48,000 miles. i was told by gm it was replaced with a new one, which i understand has a 100,000 mile warrenty. i am now having another one put in after 80.,000 miles being put on the new one at a cost of $3000. when i contacted gm regarding this i was told: at some point the customer has to take responsibility for their own vehicle, gm is not going to assist you with this issue. this will ablsolutely be the last gm product i own.

Driving at posted 55 mph our 2002 chevrolet trailblazer with 50,000 miles on it started to blow smoke behind it. before we could pull off the road safely, the engine rpm went crazy and the transmission stopped working. it was later found that the transmission cooler line failed due to corrosion and sprayed oil on the exhaust system resonator. on careful inspection, the trans cooler lines are corroded in many places. the lines are so close to the exhaust system that an insulation material had been placed over the lines and may have contributed to holding moisture and excellerating the rust through. i am waiting for new lines and do not know if the transmission is destroyed.

I have an 02 chevy trailblazer. i purchased it in 08. the 4 wheel drive is defective. i took it to the dealership 3 months after i bought it to report that the4 wheel drive indicator light was switching around on its own and causing the truck to put itself in 4 wd while i was driving. i was told that it wasn't a problem and the 4 wd box needed to be reset but it was nothing that would cause any problems. today while driving to work i was almost in a wreck because the truck jumped from 2 wd to 4 wd by itself and my truck started jerking and slowed down (on the highway). after doing some research it seems that a lot of people (especially those with the 02) have this same problem. they need to do a recall and fix the problem before people get hurt. i'm sure i'm not the only person to report this problem. please help us. if you have time please at least read through the thread on the first link. this is not an isolated incident. http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f173ba0 ......................... http://www.automotiveforums.com/t329462-4_wheel_drive_problems_w_02_trailblazer.html

My complaint is about my 2002 chevy trailblazer.on the front right (passenger side) of the vehicle.whenever i hit a bump there is an almost uncontrollable vibration.i have to bring the vehicle to a complete stop to make it stop. this started about two months ago and is gradually getting worse.i took it to a number of shops and they're all telling me the same thing.transfer case.the cheapest estimate is about $1300 , and that is for a used transfer case.i love this truck and i really have not had any problems until recently.then i started to read reviews and realized that i'm not the only one having this problem.i take very good care of my vehicles because i can't afford to keep buying new vehicles all the time,or very costly repairs. just about every vehicle that i've owned has been 4 wheel drive and i've never had this problem before ,even on trucks with twice as many miles. i am hoping that there is something that can be done that may help me with this problem .i really can't afford a new truck and i don't want to repair it with used parts .by the way,the cost of repair with new parts is roughly around $2900 . *tr

Bought a 2002 chevy trailblazer from a used car dealership in 04/09 and noticed a small puddle of fluid on the driveway. i did some quick searching and found that due to the location of the oil filter some oil could puddle up on the skid plate under the truck which can drip for a few days after so i thought nothing of it. luckily i checked the transmission fluid after my wife mentioned the truck was shifting funny. it was 2 qts low and after further investigation i noticed the transmission cooling lines are severely corroded and leaking. i did some searching and noticed a tsb for the issue - pit-4722. chevy should issue a notice to the users of these vehicles and offer to replace. i don't know about all the other vehicles but the transmissions cooling line is leaking right next to the trailblazers exhaust and i'm guessing that is not a very safe situation. *tr

We were driving our 2002 chevrolet trailblazer to the local mall and upon speeding up to 35 mph and changing to faster lane, transmission gave way and vehicle immediately decelerated while traffic behind us was approaching. a bit of a scary moment, but there was no accident. there was no warning that this was about to happen, and i had my wife and three-year-old in the vehicle. the transmission was completely wrecked on a vehicle that is well maintained and only has about 62,000 miles on it. after reading on the internet this seems to be a well documented problem, but i also believe a safety issue, and gm has never recalled these transmissions to address this issue. *tr

2002 chevy trailblazer - we had the transmission in our 2002 trailblazer replaced in sept of 2006 because the sun gear failed and ruined the transmission. this truck has not towed anything. now 35000 miles later, the same problem. this is the second transmission that had to go into this suv with the towing package. we don't tow anything and yet the transmission fails from highway driven miles. this is obviously some type of defect after researching the internet, i have found many people having the same problem. i am tired of wasting hard earned money to pay for a manufactures faulty parts. they even have a service bulletin stating a potential problem with the part and don't do anything about it. i am tired of paying 2200.00 + to correct their problems. when the transmission failed again a few days ago, my wife was nearly run into by the car behind her. i am seriously considering legal action. *tr

I was driving about 20mph after a turn and i heard a loud clunk then followed a loud winding noise. i could not go more than 25mph so i slowly made it to my home. once i was in park i tried to go in reverse and found that i had lost it. i also lost 2nd and 4th. i got an estimate of $1485.00 so i had to park it until i could save the money up in these hard times. i took it in to my local transmission place and they told me this was a common problem with 02 gm transmissions. if this is so common and i'm reading all these complaints why do i not see any recall.... someone can get seriously hurt especially when there are no warning signs. i would hope to get some sort of monetary compensation for what i had to pay out, especially with gm knowing this is a common problem. this really concerns me with gm, they need to be on the ball for their consumers safety. *tr

I have a 2002 chevy trailblazer with 80,000 miles on it. to make a long story short i have had the transmission serviced per the manufactures recommendations. my dealership has record of this. we have had no problems with the vehicle transmission up until 26 nov 2008. without warning the transmission made a loud bang and i lost overdrive. i also lost reverse gear after getting the vehicle to a parking lot. the transmission shop (aamco) is charging me 2095.00 to rebuild it. this includes a new torque converter. this is ridiculous for a vehicle with only 80,000 miles on it. gm should be ashamed as it seems there is a long list of folks with the same problem as me. i would like some monetary compensation to help repair this. thought you guys might like to know. *tr

Was pulling into work parking lot when a heard a quick bang followed by screeching noise. i tried parking but could not go into reverse. forward gears appear to work fine but reverse is completely gone. my 2002 trailblazer has under 70,000 miles on it and has always been maintained in excellent condition. after reading some of the complaints online, i suspect that once i take it for repair i will be told it is the sun shell and corresponding gears. i'm glad i wasn't in a dangerous position when the tranny went out but i completely agree that the sun shell issue in these trailblazers is a huge safety issue and it's sickening that as of today a recall to correct the issue is not out there! i suppose it takes a few tragedies for someone to do something about it but i'm hoping that's not the case this time. *tr

As i was driving up a hill in ohio, my car tried to downshift and made a grinding sound and i temporarily lost control of the vehicle causing me to swerve off of the road. i immediately took my foot off the gas and when i regained control, the car no longer shifted correctly. apparently my sunshell broke which i guess is a common problem with cars that have this sunshell in them. it ended up costing $2500 to fix my vehicle because gm uses inferior car parts. this is a safety hazard and a recall should be initiated. *tr

The transmission in my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer began to kick or surge in 2nd gear which created a bang in the rear end. i had vehicle inspected by a gm dealer and they told me the could determine where the problem was coming from. they suggested that i should keep driving the vehicle. about 2 weeks after the inspection, the transmission in my 2002 chevrolet trailblazer failed with 70,000 miles when i was pulling out of a parking lot. vehicle left me an 2 passengers stranded and i had to pay to tow the vehicle. the same gm dealership tore down the transmission and determined the cause was a failed sungear in the transmission. gm did not stand behind any of the repair even though they admitted to me over the phone that there is a problem with the transmission (model# 4l60e). i was not able to afford the $3,200 factory rebuild that the gm dealer offered to sell me, which gm said was already at a discount. all i could afford a the time was to replace the transmission with a used transmission with 40,000 miles on it. now i have about 8,000 miles on the vehicle since the replacement and the same issue is happening again. i understand i took the chance with the used transmission. the fact that gm admits that there is a problem directly to a consumer and they don't stand behind the problem shows poor company ethics. gm admits the problem but willingly allows the faulty vehicles out on the road risking the lives of loved ones and children. *tr

Failure of transmission on 9-3-08. near collision with oncoming car because of loss of power as i turned left and tried to accelerate across the center line. the car would no longer move forward or in reverse. the car was towed to a transmission shop. they told me that it was the failure of the sun shell, a $39 dollar part. the entire ordeal cost me over $3600.00 and climbing. the failure of the sun shell sheared off the cheap gears and the fragments filtered through my transmission causing more damage. my car had 76,094 miles on it at the time. the owners manual states that service for the transmission is not due until 100,000 miles. i thought i was buying a dependable car. this, i consider a major safety issue. if i was in traffic on the freeway and the transmission failed i would have been in serious trouble. i can only imagine what would have happened if was in the path of a semi truck. in the name of safety and the consumers pocket books who fund this engineering gaff, i think this issue should evoke serious consideration by the nhtsa to enforce a recall of the sun shell transmission part in all gm cars. *tr

I purchased a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer from younger toyota in hagerstown, md on may 12, 2007. approximately a week and a half afterwards, i contacted the salesman that sold us the vehicle, phil young, complaining that the transmission was making a noise and the vehicle wasn't shifting correctly. he told me to bring it in to the service department. my husband (not car savvy) said that the noise was coming from the underside of the trailblazer and felt it might be the brakes causing the noise and jerking. i stuck to my guns that it was the transmission and wanted it repaired while it still had the 30 day warranty. younger denied it was the transmission and noted my husband's theory of the brakes, but nothing about my complaint concerning the transmission. the trailblazer was taken back 2 or 3 more times to the service department, we demanded they fix it. the trailblazer sat in their lot for three weeks because we would test drive it and bring it right back stating that the problem was still there. on or around january 14, 2008 the trailblazer broke down in charlestown, wv. we took it by creamers automotive, they asked what the symptoms were and the mechanic drove around the block with me, instantly stated that it was the sunshell in the transmission and that they had someone in earlier that week with the same problem. they had purchased their vehicle at younger automotive as well and they denied the transmission problems and wouldn't note it on their paperwork as well. in my research of this problem, i found it to be very widespread, there are hundreds of complaints on one website alone. the sunshell is a faulty part that should be recalled by gm. someone is going to be hurt or even killed if this isn't taken care of immediately. gm is fully aware of this problem, there have been hundreds, maybe even thousands of complaints on this particular vehicle and should take ownership of a product they produce and sell. *tr

My 2002 chevy trailblazer has had multiple drive train/transmission failures. it currently has 99000 miles on it and has been in for transmission complaints/work on 5 separate occasions. the last occasion being nov. 28, 2007 at which time the car would roll backward while in park. upon removing the transmission pan metal shavings were found. currently this vehicle is at the dealership awaiting service/ call back from general motors corporation customer care as to whether they will cover failure due to the warranty of 5 year was up 8/31/07, with some transmission parts warranted from repair at 90,000 miles. however, the chevy service garage cannot guarantee that it is the previously repaired parts failure, therefore cannot guarantee coverage under warranty. i have 2 small children that are with me daily in this vehicle, i have had to have it towed due to transmission failure twice and now the vehicle rolls out of park. these aforementioned facts make me fear for the safety of myself and my family in this vehicle. *tr

I was driving down the road (fortunately in a 25 mph zone) when the transmission made a loud clunk then whine, after which the engine revved and i lost any ability to change gears. after stopping the car, i found only the reverse was not working - the other gears will shift over 3000 rpm. i have been told it is a faulty sunshell gear in the transmission. *jb

I had several instances of the engine revving up before the vehicle would shift. these were usually when the engine was cold so i assumed that was the problem. however 5 days ago the transmission went out. the engine revved really loud, the tach number went way up, suddenly the vehicle clunked & jerked into gear it then made a whining noise & when i got home (drove it real slow & not far from home) there was no reverse. chevrolet says there is not a problem with these transmissions & they have not received very many complaints on this problem. my transmission repair shop told me this is the third one in 3 weeks with the exact same problem. chevrolet is refusing to do anything about this. there are numerous web sites full of postings of people with the same problem. *tr

I purchased a 2002 chevy trailblazer the transmission went out at 15053 miles with previous owner 2-3 shift solenoid in transmission replaced. the transmission went out with me at 33431 miles, still under factory warranty. dealership found shell stripped out reaction carrier teeth broke replaced all clutches replaced 2/4 band. at 83029 miles transmission went out with me again. vehicle is now out of warranty. dealership found reaction sun gear stripped inside reaction sun shell. replaced sun gear and shell & o/h transmission. i called gm customer service and asked them to replace the entire transmission because i felt something was causing these parts to keep going bad and this is the 3rd time. i felt there could be one part that came from the factory in this transmission as a defect. gm agreed to pay parts if i paid labor to replace parts not replace complete transmission. this cost me $840.00. now it is 119000 miles and transmission gone again. i called gm to explain to them that this is the 4th time and i requested a new transmission and a refund of my $840.00 from last time because for some reason this transmission has a pattern of going out at approximately every 30 to 40000 miles. gm would not assist me with any assistance. the diagnostic this time shows would not shift out of 1st but to determine what parts were bad it would have to be broken down. i was hoping gm would assist me in this matter but i seem to get no where. i hope you can help! *tr

I have a 2002 trailblazer. the transmission has failed twice since i bought it. the first time it was at 26,990 miles and the second time it was at 61,062 miles. both times the transmission failed it was without any warning while i was driving it. the transmission would not move from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd unless i took my foot off of the gas. in both instances i also lost reverse. the first time it happened i was lucky because it was under warranty. the second time it happened it was 2 months and 1,000 miles after my extended warranty expired. the dealership quoted $2,038 to fix it (not replace it) but offered me a 10% discount. i didn't have a choice because i needed my vehicle. since then i have found that this is a frequent problem that gm is aware of however they will not make a recall. what are my options? this is definitely a safety concern as there is no warning when the transmission fails. *tr

Summary: -2002 trailblazer lt 2wd -transmission failure at 78,000 miles -near accident with two children in car ages 2 and 7 -major repair cost -significant safety problem -multiple listings of identical failures (sun shell/ reaction gear) planetary system. -reportedly known defective and (under designed) part. this will be the nhtsa's responsibility to investigate and sort out. -some reports of a silent recall however never acknowledged with my conversations -no warning of oncoming failure -owners manual doesn't recommend any transmission service until 100,000 miles -never towed anything -wife driven/ garage kept -significant engineering accomplishments in transmissions have been made in the past decade with materials and lubricants. there is absolutely no reason a tranny should fall apart on an automobile towing or not under 100,000 miles especially if your following the manufacturers maintenance recommendations. -gm covered 30% after lengthy time. -technician described failure as: when we see these problems its almost always what we call the sun-shell grenades now, since you limit your description to 2000 characters which doesn't allow a complete description i will leave you with the summary and give you the location of the full report which i hope you take the time to review because of the safety problem. http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/webx?14@@.ef15323/221 thanks for your consideration. *nm

2002 trailblazer with approx. 34,000 miles; purchased new. as i was driving. there was a loud, violent clunk from under the car. i was able to coast around a corner and into the right lane of another street. after waiting for over an hour for a tow truck, i was forced to drive the car (slowly) about 1/4 mile into a large parking lot. the entire time i was driving, there was a loud whining noise. when i tried to back up the car, there was no reverse gear. the tow truck driver took me and the car to a chevrolet dealer. the service person called me a short time later to say the sun shield was broken, and repairs would be a minimum of $1800, possibly more if additional problems were found once the transmission was pulled. even though there are only 34,000 miles on the car, he advised that it was 1-1/2 years past the time portion of the warranty. my car is still at the dealership until i can do more research into the apparently widespread problem with this car. *nm

 1. we have always had problems with our 2002 trailblazer. at times, mostly when cold, the gas pedal would be unresponsive. we continually took it to the dealer who told us there was nothing wrong. in december of 2003 we could not get the vehicle to go into 4wd, took it to the dealer and they changed the transfer case control module. 2. in may of 2005 with approx. 80000 miles on our tb, the transmission failed. it would not shift beyond second gear. at the time we were driving somewhat slowly so it didn't create a dangerous circumstance. 3. we took it to the gm dealer who rebuilt the transmission for approx. $2200. ever since the transmission was rebuilt, it has shifted hard in 1st and 2nd gear. *nm

I am writing in a complaint on my trailblazer transmission. my fiance decided to go shopping in st. louis about 200 miles from home on her return home she was about 10 miles from home and she feels this instant jerk that made her go off the side of the road and then the vehicle had a constant humming noise. after she got control of vehicle and came to a stop. she had no gears or reverse. i am complaining because if she would have been in st. louis she probably would have hit someone or killed someone when the transmission went out if she would have been in the high traffic area. i am writing this letter because i have wrote gm headquarters and the said they can't do anything about it. well the vehicle isn't very old and our friends had the same thing happen to them but the went on vacation to florida when theirs happened the only difference theirs was under recall is what the dealer told our friends. so they got there transmission changed for free and i have had to pay for a new transmission. gm headquarters told me for me to get my money back that you would have to recall the transmission on my certain model before i would get my money refunded to me. please look into this matter. i know other people are having the same trouble. thanks. *nm

The transmission on my 2002 chevy trailblazer has failed with only 43,000 miles. the cost of replacement is $3,200. we purchased the vehicle used in february of 2005 from a very reputable dealership in the harrisburg pa area. it is very disappointing that you take special care of your vehicle then it has this major problem. after doing some research on the internet i see i am not the only one with this problem it seems to happen quite often on low mileage trailblazer. *jb

My 2002 trailblazer with 32,716 miles on it, started to make a thud noise when slowing down and increasing speed on 12/09/05. i called chapman chevrolet in tempe, az and made an appointment for 12/12/05 to have it looked at. on 12/11/05 while out christmas shopping my tb started to whine while in motion, then lost reverse. the service center called the afternoon of 12/12/05 to let me know that the sun shell gear had gone out in the transmission, and that the following day someone associated with the extended warrenty program would come out to verify the repairs, which all the repairs were covered, for which i only had to pay the $100.00 deductable. however, if i had not had the extended warrenty the repairs would have cost appx. $2700.00. yes, my tb was past the 3year date of purchase, however i wouldn't excpect for a transmission to have problems or go out under 100,000 miles, unless the vehicle is being used commercially. i'm very disappointed with the quality of my tb, and plan to get rid of it before my extended warrenty runs out, my next vehicle will not be a gm product. *nm

 1) no special events. normal operation, backed out of parking place, heard metal noise, now tranny has no reverse, and won't shift out of 1st gear. vehicle was left there at that point for tow. 2) vehicle is now being towed and serviced by aamco transmission. after reading numerous online discussion boards, it's very apparent to me that gm knows there is a problem with the 4l65e transmissions failing, but refuse to do anything about it, in the form of a recall. my wife was driving, since this is her vehicle, but i'm thankful that hers failed in a parking lot. i read some discussions that should definitely be a true safety hazard. as in, when some of these transmissions fail, the wheels lock up, which makes you skid. this could be very dangerous, especially for those of us that live in snow country! *jb

2002 chevy trailblazer, at 37k miles the transmission went out. dealer repaired under warranty. at 60k miles, the exact same part on transmission went out again. gm agreed to split repair at 50/50. the transmission went out while driving. i was stranded over 100 miles away from home. now at 90k miles on the vehicle, the exact same part has gone out again. i was driving home from work when the transmission would not shift out of first gear. it was a hazard to myself traveling on a state highway with a speed limit of 55 and the car would not move past 30 mph. it will not go in reverse. gm has said they will not do anything other than a 10% assistance to repair. i have read a number of other trailblazer owner's complaints who have experienced the same issue. it seems to be a design default on the vehicle and gm does not want to look at it. *jb

My 4wd gave in and broke the front axle and seized the front diff. this happened in april and was repaired by gm. gm payed 40% of the cost to repair. the truck had 68000 miles on it at the time. the truck now has 72000 miles on it and the trasmittion needs to be replaced. i guess the sunshell is at fault, but regardless, pretty much the whole trucks drive train has needed to be replaced before 75000 miles. this shouldn't be the case and makes me wonder if this vehicle is a lemon. *nm

Feb. 04 46,000 miles repaired transmission, 2nd gear and reverse broken, was told by a gm transmission repairman that this is very common problem, sometimes it takes just one fix, some trailblazers have required many repairs (also problem on envoy), being a straight 6, the transmission cannot handle the torque causing the gears in the transmission to break; vehicle cut off on me at a red light for unknown reason; dash gauges and radio would not come on when car started, drove for a few miles, cut car off, restarted and all came back on;radio facing becomes extremely hot to touch at times and flickers on and off; obnoxious squeak in the front end of car, taken to mechanics with no reason why; ticking noise while running; other than the transmission, no action has been taken due to reading the filed complaints of others with no real successful results or answers from dealers. i hate this car!! *jb

This complaint is for a 2002 chevy trailblazer with 44000 miles. my wife pulled out to pass a slow moving car and when she pulled along side the car she was passing, the motor just reved up and made a screeming loud sort of noise. there was a car coming ahead of her and the line of cars behind her had taken up the empty spot she had just pulled out to pass from, not to mention she was scared by the loud noise coming from the car. she almost hit the on-coming car head on. my wife and two children were in the car that almost cost them their lives. after researching the problem and talking to the dealership that is repairing the problem, it seems many people are having this transmission problem. my dealership's service manager said this shoud not happen again because the new parts are hardened steel, and the gear that was put in at the factory was not. i feel that this is a widespread problem and someone is not going to be as lucky as my family ended up being. i assume that the company is not recalling this transmission part because of the cost of replaceing this defective part. i feel that the saftey of my family and any other family is well worth the cost of replacing this defective part.

I own a 2002 trailblazer and bought it new in may 2002 and purchased the extended warranty 5 years or 50,000 miles. the other morning on my way to work my car would not shift to the next gear automatically. this happened with no warning. it did this the whole way to work. i was concerned at that point that there was a problem with the transmission. when i came out of work to leave for the day i needed to get into reverse to get out of my parking space and my vehicle would not shift into reverse. at that point i knew there was a real problem. i checked my transmission fluid and it appeared to have been a little low so i added some fluid and that did not make difference. at this time the person who was parked in front of me left so i was able to get into drive and i drove carefully home. when i called the dealer and asked if my vehicle was still under warranty they checked and it was not. i have 58,000 miles on my car and my warranty was for 5 years or 50,000 miles. so at this point i had no other choice then to take it to the dealer or another shop to have it looked at. i chose to take it to aamco transmissions since my family has used them previously for other transmission problems. the mechanic there told me that they would do diagnostic tests, a test drive and then check to make sure all connections are good. within a couple of hours he called me to let me know that my problem with my transmission was definitely internal and they would have to rebuild it. he told me that i had no 1 2 3 shift and no reverse. once they had taken it apart he called me to give me the damage. the cost of the rebuild with several parts needing replaced this is costing me $2500. these are the parts that needed to be replaced, torque converter, drive shaft, transfer case fluid, steel plates, drive shell, update pumps, reactor shaft, thrust washer and epc solenoid. *jb

Car starting making a whinnying noise. i then turned around and took to car to the dealership for repair, approximately 10 miles. their investigation found it was the transmission , only 84,500 miles). at this point, i will have to authorize them to make the repairs , approximately $2500. after reading several message boards, it appears that this is a common problem that gm addressed on the 2003 model. apparently, part of the transmission on the 2002 could not stand the heat. gm needs to fix this problem and issue a recall, and behind their product). *ak

We own a 2002 chevy trailblazer 4wd with 57,000 miles. on the date of the incident, a clunk was heard from the transmission and the transmission would not shift properly and there was no reverse gear. the vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. after inspection and road test, it was determined that the sun shell spleen had stripped and the sun gear and sun shell drum had to be replaced along with a reconditioning of the transmission. this repair came to the tune of 2022 dollars. our service manager was able to have the factory cove half of the repair as a goodwill gesture. i am also an employee at the dealer and had access to repair information provided by chevrolet. apparently, the material the original sun shell was made of was not able to withstand prolonged high temperatures that are found in the trans. for the 2003 model year and later, general motors made the sun shell out of a more heat resistant material which will hopefully prevent the problem from recurring. in my opinion, this is equivalent to general motors admitting that the original trans in our vehicle was of substandard quality right from the manufacturer. this problem has eroded away any confidence we have in gm and do not feel safe driving this vehicle for fear of the problem recurring in a much more dangerous situation that could lead to a loss of control and possible a major accident. *jb

 1. my car broke down on my way to work, approximately 27 miles into the trip. i turned onto a side street, and when i started accelerating, a loud screeching sound started as i entered 2nd gear. i immediately pulled over. 2. my husband gently drove it to the dealer and they assumed it was the sun shell spline. however, in order to find out, they wanted to charge me $455 to pull the transmission. we decided against it, fearing the high cost of repair and took it to a local mechanic. 3. mechanic replaced the sun shell spline, pressure control solenoid and manifold pressure switch. cost = $1,222.66 + $84.00 diagnostic at dealer. we have the sun shell spline. repairs were completed on june 2nd. then, on june 5, the condensor on the a/c went out. took it to the dealer because chevy stated that was the only way they could help me (no help on the transmission). cost to repair = $261.34.

Transmissions went out weeks after hearing sounds underneath the car, and hearing a loud poping sound. i had all of the recall problem, plus problems with my heating and cooling system controls going out on the high setting, problems with embrassasing squeaking noises coming from underneath the car. what really hurt me so bad is that the place where my husband and i work we build parts for general motors every day and worked there fo 22 years trusting that the first car that we bought brand new would be a gm product that i would be at least heard from the company and having them be concerend enough to help pay for my repairs or something, i only had the car for 2 and a half years. *jb

We bought a new 2002 trailblazer. never used the four wheel drive until it had 39,000 miles on it. at that time, found out we would need to replace a transmission module. this was replace about three months ago.*ak my wife was driving the truck down the interstate in two wheel drive. without warning, she felt the vehicle lose power and slow down. she glanced down at the electronic switch indicator for drive condition. the indicator light was flickering between four wheel hi and four wheel lo. if there had been other traffic around, it could have been a serious accident since she slowed down under 40 mph during this ordeal. i was driving the vehicle and was stopped waiting to make a left hand turn. the drive indicator, without warning, started to switch between two wheel drive, four wheel drive hi and four wheel drive low. i didn't move. after about 5 seconds, the lights stopped flashing and the two wheel drive indicator lamp was on. i proceeded to make the turn. the dealer (glenway chevrolet, cincinnati, oh) finds nothing wrong with the vehicle. their suggestion: we start to replace parts, at our cost.

I own a 2002 chevy trailblazer and have had nothing but problems with it since it was bought. it's been in the shop a total of 7 times. three of the times it has been in the shop with drive train problems, two times for u-joints and once for a bearing to the driveshaft. another two times the vehicle just stopped and the transmission could not be shifted into gear. now after 43,000 miles the transmission failed and would not go into reverse and since the warranty is only for 36,000 miles it is now going to cost $2800.00 to repair it. i feel that a transmission in a car that is only a year and a half old should not have failed since all the maintenance since the car was bought was done at the dealership. i have also never received and of the recall notices i have read about on this vehicle. the bottom line is a transmission should last a little longer than 43,000 miles. *jb

I own a 2002 chevy trailblazer (purchased new) and had the transmission go out for the 3rd time in 9 months. this time the dealer has agreed to replace the transmission. but i understand there is a known defect in this new transmission (per the dealer it is in the reverse shell area), the same defect was in my original transmission. the dealer has also implied that perhaps the problem has to do with how we drive the vehicle and the way we shift gears! i strongly disagree. i've had several vehicles over my 37 years of driving and have never had a problem like this. i started having problems with the trailblazer back in april 2002 when the switch used to select from 2h to 4h to 4l began flashing the selector lights in each of the positions. i brought it back to the dealer but they found nothing and said i would have to continue to drive it until i got some sort of solid indication. in april of 2003 (about 14 months after i purchased the trailblazer). while driving down the interstate the vehicle suddenly shifted from 2h to 4h and finally to 4l as i brought it to a stop. i had to turn off the engine to get it out of gear. this happened a second time a few minutes later and then quit. in may 2003 and in june 2003 i had to have the transmission repaired. now the transmission has gone out again in january 2004. this time they are replacing the transmission but i understand that this transmission has a defect ( as previously described) in it. they assure me that i won't have any more problems and have offerred a $2,000 rebate on a future purchase. after 3 transmission problems in 9 months, i have little faith in this vehicle.*ak

I own a 2002 chevrolet trailblazer ltz. when driving at around 54 mph and 1600 rpm's the suv produces a vibration that can be heard and felt throught out the vechicle. to the best of my knowledge neither gm or the dealerships knows what is causing the vibration. it is with out a doubt something that should not be happening. i also know other people with the same suv having the same problem. does it do damage to my suv every time it happens? most importantly it happens at highway speed. i don't want something to go wrong at 54 mph. thank you. any questions please feel free to contact me. *please note i entered todays date below but it happens all the time and has been since i bought the suv brand new.

I was driving on interstate 80 in 2 wheel drive low at 65mph. the vehicle began to vibrate and i looked at the 4 wheel drive selector switch and the light was flashing for all wheel drive. this should only happen when the switch is turned to that position. then the rpms on the vehicle red lined and the light went to solid green on 4 wheel drive low. at that point the vehicle went into a 360 degree spin on the interstate. luckily i did not hit anything or anyone. the vehicle came to rest in a ditch. i was able to drive the vehicle off the interstate and when doing so the selector switch was shifting between all the options from 4 wheel drive to all wheel drive. i stopped the vehicle and let the vehicle run while i waited for a tow truck. while the vehicle was in park the lights started flashing and the vehicle was shifting in park. each time the vehicle shifted the vehicle would lunge forward 2 to 3 feet. my family was in the vehicle at the time and are afraid to be in this vehicle. the dealership says the computer is showing no malfunction codes. they have driven the vehicle and the problem has not happened to them. this vehicle is unsafe. dt

This is my third complaint in 3 months. this morning, i shifted from 2hi to 4hi due to ice, snow and slippery conditions. i stopped at a shop and shut off my engine. i returned, started the vehicle and pulled into the street. the lights on the transfer case dial went black and the vehicle reverted to 2hi. this is the 3rd time in three months that this has happened. my local dealer has been very good at trying to identify the problem, however, gm itself is of little assistance beyond hoping that nothing more serious happens. the reat question is whether the nhtsa will now do anything as a result of the numerous complaints on its webpage. *ak

I recently purchased a 2002 chevy trailblazer, and it's about 86,000 miles on it. at about 100,000 my transmission went. i did some research, and found out that there were many people who owned this same vehicle who had the same exact problem. i also learned that this piece that is used in the transmission called the sun shield has been the problem for a lot of people. the transmission specialist that fixed my vehicle told me that this sun shield is a faulty, and a lot of gm, and chevy owners have problems with it. there is a huge amount of people out there that are having this same problem with the same 2002 chevy trailblazer. i was driving on the highway, and suddenly felt that something was wrong. i am just happy that i pulled over when i did, because there was a lot of traffic that day. i was very scared, because i was alone in this car, and also i did not want to be hit from behind when i was pulling over to the shoulder of the highway. i called the gm dealer, and they said that they could do nothing for me. even when i explained to them what had happended, and that this had happened to a lot of other people. i was told that my car was not under warranty, and this was not one of the many recalls that this truck has. i then had to fix this truck myself, and it cost me 2,300. the sun shield was replaced by something called the beast which i was told would be very very durable unlike the gm sun shield part. *tr

I am writing in a complaint on my trailblazer transmission. my fiance decided to go shopping in st. louis about 200 miles from home on her return home she was about 10 miles from home and she feels this instant jerk that made her go off the side of the road and then the vehicle had a constant humming noise. after she got control of vehicle and came to a stop. she had no gears or reverse. i am complaining because if she would have been in st. louis she probably would have hit someone or killed someone when the transmission went out if she would have been in the high traffic area. i am writing this letter because i have wrote gm headquarters and the said they can't do anything about it. well the vehicle isn't very old and our friends had the same thing happen to them but the went on vacation to florida when theirs happened the only difference theirs was under recall is what the dealer told our friends. so they got there transmission changed for free and i have had to pay for a new transmission. gm headquarters told me for me to get my money back that you would have to recall the transmission on my certain model before i would get my money refunded to me. please look into this matter. i know other people are having the same trouble. thanks. *nm

This vehicle would go out of gear without warning because of a faulty 4 wheel drive switching system. this occurred in traffic, and an unoccupied park situation. the vehicle went out of park and rolled into a door while in the garage. the vehicle also went out of gear in traffic situations causing the driver to find the road shoulder. if the driver manipulated the switch it would sometimes re-engage the transmission. an encoder motor sensor was replaced, then failed in two weeks. it was then diagnosed that the encoder motor was faulty and causing the encoder sensor to fail. replaced motor and sensor again. this is a defect that should be part of the existing recall for all 2002 chevrolet trailblazers, not just the select few as prescribed today. *tr

My 2002 chevy trailblazer is having problems with the 4 wheel drive system. about a year ago when my vehicle was still under warranty i had a problem with my 4-wd system, the dash said service 4 wheel drive. i took it to the dealership and they plug it in to the computer and said they recalibrated the system because it was a computer error not equipment failure. on dec 5 of 07 the roads were snowy so i put my vehicle into 4 wd, but the 4 wd did not engage and i slid off the road and almost ended up in a ditch. after that incident the service 4 wheel drive light came on again, on dec 6 of 07, i took my vehicle in for service, and now my vehicle is out of warranty, this time the dealership said my 4-wd actuator was shorted out, my bill came to $838.07. i contacted seven of my friends who have the same make and model, a couple with newer models, and they all except two of them, have had the same problem with the actuator shorting out. i then contacted gm corporate office on this matter and ask for assistance in paying for this repair due to faulty equipment and i said there is no reason for this part to go bad with 70,000 miles on a 2002 trailblazer, they told me that due to my year of vehicle and miles there was nothing they would do for me. i told them there are other cases in the area with this same problem and i asked them to investigate this because it needs to be a recall, or find out what the problem is and fix it before other newer models are sent out with the same problem, and somebody actually gets hurt because of equipment failure. gm stated there is nothing they will do with this unless it turns out to be an actual recall. so here i am making a complaint and asking for help. this needs to be investigated and solved before somebody is seriously hurt due to gm equipment failure!!! please help!!!! *tr

This will be the third time i have had my trailblazer to the dealer for the same problem. when driving, the car will shift itself between 2hi and 4 hi. also, after utilizing the selector on two occasions the car got stuck in neutral and had to be towed. after being treated like an ignorant woman who doesn't know how to operate the controls i am finally changing dealers. maybe they should read this and see that apparently i am not the only person having these problems. *jb

At 34000 miles 4 wheel drive transfer case failed and the rear differential had to be replaced, still under warranty. at 70000 miles both repairs are needed again along with others- sway bar worn, short in headlights (previously repaired), interior lights shorting. dealership quoted around $3000 to fix everything. nothing they can do about any of the problems. so the vehicle is without 4 wld and often only has 1 working headlight. *nm

I just purchased this 2002 trailblazer sept 30 2006.. it was november 22, 2006- the 4 wheel drive indicator lights were blinking when i put it in reverse. the onstar lights were on. the seat belt lights were on. later the next day, my father got in my vehicle to move it, when the brake sensor came on and wouldn't go off. he didn't use the emergency brake. my father called apple chevy in west york pa to see what they could do. the 24th they called and said the vehicle needed a e.b.c.m. ( electronic brake control module ). i have a 9 month old son. i get to go pay for the bill, and it costs 930. 25 for a vehicle that wasn't that old. it does have 144, 000 + miles but it was well maintained or so i thought. they did a car fax and it was clean. or so i thought. apple chevy in west york wouldn't help with any cost repairs. they said when you get an as is vehicle, its your problem. well after 4 vehicles that my dad bought from them, we are no longer customers. me being a hot head, my dad told me to not say nothing and be nice. i kept my comments to a low roar. i called the general manager and he said an as is sale is what it is. i got no satisfaction. but a comment i said to him was- what if it was your wife and son what would you do? he said i wouldn't buy an as is vehicle. i basically asked if he wanted some lemonade from the vehicle i just got. i said well i must have sucker written on my head and that next time warn me about getting more ky for the screwing i just received. he basically said sorry i feel that way. we could bring it back and get something different from them. but i basically said no and hung up. still the radio malfunctions, the 4 wheel drive may work sometimes, the vehicle acted like it was in neutral. then after being towed, it acts fine. so at present, it sits in my parents garage not driven with $ i still pay for insurance and payments. i did hear a grinding from the shifter when putting it into drive. i don't trust it. thank you. *jb

'02 trailblazer-i bought the vehicle used at 30k. every once in awhile when pulling it out of the garage the 4x4 selection lights would go out and the red n would flash. when i put the vehicle in neutral the red n would go out and the 2wd light would come on. at approx. 40k miles it did it one day when i was pulling out of the garage. later that day i was just exiting the interstate and heard a loud grinding noise coming from the transfer case/transmission. the noise changed pitch with my speed. when i pulled over to the shoulder i put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine. when i took my foot off of the brake the vehicle started to roll down a hill. i re-applied the brake, started the vehicle and switched it from 2wd to 4wd then back to 2wd. the vehicle then was able to move and i took it directly to the dealership. after they looked at it the next day they said could not duplicate the problem. they also said that the flashing n was not normal and to bring it in if it did it again. after looking at this site i am very concerned for my family's safety in this vehicle. i spoke with chevrolet customer service on 5/3/05 on this and another issue and was told that my vehicle vin was not part of the list of those affected by this problem and that it would only be added if the dealership saw the problem.

I purchased a new 2002 chevy trailblazer in the spring of 2002. as early as the fall of 2002 the vehicle began to randomly/automatically change from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. the switch was not touched and was in 2wheel drive, but the light for 4 wheel drive was on and the car was in 4 wheel drive. this usually would occur on the highway at a high rate of speed. i mentioned this to the dealership, but they stated they could not recreate the scenario. two months ago, the transmission on the vehicle needed to be replaced at 29,000 miles. i believe this was due to the automatic changing of 2 to 4 wheel drive. i demanded the dealership correct the issue. i have had the vehicle in to their shop four times since to have the same problem corrected, and it continues to happen. i am concerned for the safety of my wife and family ans this vehicle is used to transport them around. is there any recourse for me regarding this situation. i no longer feel safe driving this car.*ak

While driving the vehicle at a speed of approximately 65-70 mph, i felt a surge as if the transmission was shifting. as this was happening i noticed the light next to the four-wheel switch selector knob was blinking above the automatic 4hi position. this has happened on occasion quite frequently. my wife who normally drives this vehicle says it happens several times during a typical 60-mile trip. this same thing happened a week after we starting leasing this vehicle back in april of 2002. i told the dealership about it and they said they couldn't find anything wrong. they said it's hard to find something wrong with it when it's not actually happening in front of them. it always tends to happen in the speed range of 50-70 mph. this issue has me concerned, especially while driving on snow, ice, or wet surfaces. i'm afraid it could jerk enough to throw us off the road. i've now realized, through the nhtsa web site, that many trailblazer owners/operators have had similar problems and gm has done nothing to remedy the problem. i've always purchased gm since my father is a retired gm employee, but i'm now considering buying outside of the gm family. what good is the gm employee incentive/discount, when your life is at risk? apparently to gm, the cost of life is nothing compared to the cost of a recall. i'm considering getting out of the lease, no matter the cost, due to the lemon of a vehicle we now have. how many people will be injured and or possibly killed before gm decides to bite the bullet and recall their bread-winning vehicle? today (3-17-03) while in for normal service, i was told that the dealer reset the control module, which might fix the problem. i asked them about changing the switch and they said they have done this on some vehicles but prefer to start with resetting the module. only time will tell. i hope the forecast is for dry weather! *nlm

On 11/02 i had my vehicle at the dealer for service & it was brought up that the 4wd was turning on & off randomly. the service person mentioned that they have seen a handful of these & the computer in the vehicle was asleep however, they advised they couldn't check the problem because it was in working order at the time i had it in. they could only check the problem if it wasn't working. the last week of 1/03, i was traveling at highway speeds in 2wd. the vehicle automatically shifted itself into 4wd high, made a very loud sound & the lights on the dash changed from 4wd high to awd, & 4wd low. when i arrived home, all the lights on the dash for 4wd were out & have not come back on. the vehicle was turned off. when the vehicle was turned back on the following day, it was in 2wd & would not engage into awd or 4wd high or low. i contacted my dealer who set up an appointment to bring the vehicle in on 2/5/03 to have the 4wd checked out. on 2/4/03 i hit a patch of snow & ice with my rear tires. i was traveling approximately 40 mph on a 55 mph road. due to the vehicle only being in 2wd & the awd & 4wd not working, the front wheels of the vehicle had no power & the vehicle went out of control & ended up in a ditch on the side of the road causing over $4000 in damage. minor bruising injury to myself when my knees slammed into the dash. body damage has been repaired & the service dept has confirmed that the computer was not working at the time of the accident in order for the 4wd to turn on. the computer has since been reset & the vehicle returned to me on 2/27/03. again on 3/1/03 & 3/3/03, the vehicle was in 2wd traveling at highway speeds & randomly turned from 2wd to awd & 4wd. on 3/10/03, i advised the dealer again of the problem & the manager is going to speak w/the service dept to find out if there have been any other complaints of this nature. again, the dealer said they couldn't do anything now for me as the vehicle is working at this time.*jb

While driving at freeway speed, 65-70 mph, a grinding, ratcheting sound was heard from the drivetrain and the lights on the transfer case switch moved back and forth from 2wd to 4hi and 4low. after the vehicle was towed to the dealer, they first completed the recall #01065 to reprogram the transfer case. when they road tested the car they could not duplicate the earlier complaint of grinding metal. the service advisor indicated that the recall probably corrected the problem. my question is, what did all that metal grinding noise do to the longevity of the transfer case, and what if it fails after the 3 year, 36 month warranty?
