FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - DELIVERY - FUEL PUMP
PE07013GENERAL MOTORS CORP.03/12/200707/10/2007FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
Odi has received reports that the fuel pump module leaks fuel and or vapor underneath the vehicle.gm states, the failure mechanism is corrosion of the fuel pump module flange which may lead to a fuel leak.corrosion of the fuel pump module flange is the result of the vehicle operating in a corrosive environment.odi has upgraded this pe to engineering analysis (ea07-009) to further assess this issue.
EA07009GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/10/200708/28/2008FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE
During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.

PE04001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/05/200405/07/2004FUEL SPILLAGE DURING REFUELING
This investigation was opened on the model year (my) 2003 chevrolet trailblazer.based on gm's information request (ir) response, odi added to its analysis the my 2003 gmc envoy and oldsmobile bravada vehicles.these vehicles share the same vehicle platform (gm 360/370) and fuel fill components.incident summary numbers reported above include these vehicles.epa regulates the fuel dispensing rates at filling stations and gm states that the reports of spitback for the subject vehicles are principally caused by fuel dispensing pumps exceeding the rate specified by epa.odi finds that the rate of complaints, field reports and warranty is low compared to other vehicles that have been recalled for a spitback issue.a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of the agency resources does not appear to be warranted.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached report for additional information.

Our 2003 chevy trailblazer has smelled like fuel for a few months and we have been going through gas like crazy. we just discovered a cracked valve connecting the hose to the fuel tank. of course, chevy doesn't just sell the valve, they want you to buy a whole new tank. after researching online, this seems to be a common problem, maybe a defect with this model and make for 2002-2004 models. i have 3 small children and am concerned that this is a huge safety issue. we had another defect problem with our trailblazer last year, where the hinges on the rear door wore out and we had to replace the entire door. this is also a common problem with trailblazers, but chevy will not issue a recall. we paid the $2500 for the rear door, but i don't want to pay another $1000+ for the fuel tank. this vehicle is becoming a money pit.

I am the original owner of a 2003 chevy trailblazer. when i first purchased the vehicle in the month of october/2002, i didn't experience any problems until maybe the fourth year, going on its 5th; right before the warranty was about to expire. the first problem i encountered with the vehicle was the transmission. it didn't want to change gears properly. because of the 5 year warranty, the dealership was able to fix that problem, at that time. today, i continue to experience transmission problems: with a loud noise, a struggle in horse power and a vibration when i am at a complete stop. i have spent so much money on other electrical parts as well. i have purchased over ten light bulbs for rear brake lights that continue to malfunction. i recently replaced a relay because the head lights would constantly go out after the vehicle was turned on. i replaced the fan clutch and water pump because they both went out. i also replaced a battery and two starters. for the past few months, my vehicle smells like fuel everytime i turn it on. i am asking that your department look into all of these claims. it appears that almost everyone that owes a 2003 trailblazer has been experiencing the same issues, but yet; no one is doing enough to protect all those consumers who have been grateful to this country in purchasing american made vehicles. a sincere thanks.

My 2003 trailblazer developed a fuel leak at the inlet check valve. specifically i was informed by the dealership that the inlet valve has developed a crack in the weld and is leaking gas when the tank is full or while i am filling up the tank. i believe this is a dangerous situation and in doing some research appears to be a common problem with both the ext and regular models of trailblazer. however only the ext models are under special coverage for replacement at this time.

Ses light came on - took to dealer and was advised of gas tank filler neck crack. did smoke test to determine leak. tried repair by sealing. that lasted 2 weeks and ses light came on again. gave me estimate repairing with new tank approx $1500.00 or used tank $800.00. did some research on the internet and found they was recall on extended trailblazers (mine is not). delved further and found service bulletin indicating gmc and chevrolet has a special coverage adjustment #07099a. they ordered a new tank and installed at no expense to me.

I noticed a strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle. i researched the manufacturers tsb's and discovered there were two voluntary recall campaigns that had fuel odor symptoms. i inspected the components and found i had both issues, rusted feed and return lines on the fuel pump and a fractured filler neck on the tank. gm extended the warranty to 10 years and 150000 miles on one issue and 10 years and 120000 miles on the other. i currently have 158000 miles on my vehicle. my issue is with the voluntary recall notice i received. they clearly state that if there is no fuel odor present then do nothing at this time. if i had gone in for inspection at the time the notices were sent out, i would have been under the mileage cap and it would have been fixed under warranty. this is a major safety hazard and should have been a full blown safety recall. a voluntary recall is just a way to skirt the issue and save a buck. how many people are there like me who will not find a problem until it is too late. and it is too late by the time you can smell a fuel odor, that means there is raw fuel escaping from your tank. now i have had to fix this problem at my substantial expense.

I am filing a complaint .and will continue to file complaints until all of the consumers issues have been addressed. i understand that gm is not willing to hold theirselfs liable for these issues ,but people spend pretty pennies out of pocket to purchase vehicles from these manufacturers to spend more money to pay for repairs after just a short while of owning these . i have researched issues i am having with my vehicle , and i am having all the above listed issues , and do not wish to spend large amounts of money to pay for these cost considering i am still paying for this vehicle . i just spoke with a representive about these complaints ,and have set up an appoinment to pay a dealership for diagnostics , but am hoping that i can get closure on these issues without paying big expenses. i hope everyone else will follow suit and keep inputting your complaints until they are resolved. my vehicle issues are the fan clutch needs replaced, my gas tank has been replaced already, just replaced my serpintine belt this morning, my exterior lights (brake/turn signal) have been replaced 3 times over two months, and engine light keeps coming on , something doesnt seem right underneath this vehicle either. i just feel like i am paying for a peice of junk on top of paying to keep the vehicle running. oh yea this vehicle has had to have thousands of dollars of body work done as well thanks to mother nature. i just hope they will be responsible enough to take on this responsibilty of theirs ,not ours.

After noticing strong gasaline odors in car and in the garage, the check engine engine light came on. according to diagnostic test run by dealarship, this is the result of a leak in evac system. while researching, noticed other owners having same problem. called gm, advised no recalls issued for this problem. gm offered no relief. expressed my disappointment with rep since this problem could lead to very serious consequences.good thing the problem was caught since could have led to fire had there been an acccident or an incenarator nearby. my cost to repair the manufacturers defect is $1600.00.

Service engine light illuminated due to leak in evac system according to diagnostic test. smoke test showed leak to be at weld where fill spout tube is attached to fuel tank. gasoline fumes were present were present from the vehicle. was infonmed that tank would have to be replaced ala cost of $1200.00. did some intemet research and found that gm had a tsb addressing this problem (campaign #05012), but it only applied to 2002 ext models. since this is, in reality, a fire safety issue, i feel gm should also include other models with the same problem regardless of age or milage.

Fuel neck leaks on gas tank on my 2003 chevy trailblazer purchased it from a local dealership on 08/14/10 with 107782 miles on it. we keep it in our garage and (that is also where people go to smoke) shortly after we got it home we noticed a gas smell in the garage so we started looking at it and noticed it. long story short we took it back to the dealership and they told us the the fuel neck was cracked and the purger tank was bad. they tried a silicon on the leak which did not work so they say the tank needs to be replaced. noticed that others where having the same problem. called gm to see if they would in any way cover the repair of an known issue, and was told that since i bought it used and it has over a 100,000 miles they would not do anything! now the dealership does not want to do anything, and are mad because i called gm. then i did a carfax today and notice there is a mileage issue.

Safety problem with seal where the filler neck meets gas tank. this seal cracks. gas spills out this seal when fueling and emits a strong gas odor when engine is on or off, more so when car is running. from my research this is a wide spread problem but only ext models are eligible for free replacement but the problem is not limited to ext models. same defective parts are used on non ext models. cost to repair is $1400! this is a health concern and fire hazard due to fumes escaping vehicle *cn

I own a 2003 chevy trailblazer ls model. the gas tanks leaks where the filler neck connects to the tank. this is a known issue on 2002,2003 and 2004 models. i asked gm for assistance with the tank replacement ($1400.00) because this is a well known issue with this vehicle. request was denied because i don't have a history with gm dealerships as in previous purchases. my vin number did not fall into the special authorization that was issued in 2007 for this issue. *tr

I own a 2003 chevy trailblazer v6 ls. i always noted the presence of an odor of gas especially when filling up my vehicle, it grew progressively worse over a two year time frame. then in july of 2009 the check engine light would come on and go off. i noticed gas dripping from the underside near the gas tank! finally evidence of a leak! a very strong smell of gas and took it to my service garage. the examined the problem and told me i needed a new fuel pump assembly. they repaired it to the tune of $680 dollars. 4 weeks later i was back, still smelling gas. they had to drop the tank again and replace the assembly unit gasket. i think this may be a wide spread problem not just limited to me. *tr

I have owned a 2003 chevrolet tb ltz and for the past several months i have been smelling a gas leak somewhere but i could not identify where. recently i found that it was leaking around the neck of the pump where it was corroded and the seal failed. now everything work well including the gas pump and i have been reading that this problem has been existing on 2002 trailblazers and later. my tb has 106,000 miles on it and unfortunately out of the warrantly period but this is definitely a safety issue. i am just glad the truck did not start a fire, especially when my family was in it or it was parked in my attached garage. has there been any recall on the gas tank. i have never been advised by chevrolet except for the filler neck which i really don't think was a problem at the time with my tb. please help! *tr

I own a 2003 chevy trailblazer. i have been smelling gas fumes for the last couple of years and when i have taken to the local dealerships they stated that it was just spillage and normal for that type of car. my check engine light stays on and i have been told by autozone personnel that the code indicates some kind of emissions leak. when reviewing the open complaints, i noticed that there are many complaints very similar to what i have been experiencing. it is mostly when i fill up my gas tank over 1/2 a tank. i am afraid to fill it up full due to the heavy smell of gas. *tr

2003 trailblazer - reduced engine power light present when started. would accelerate to 15mph. rattle or grinding noise when braking or driving over bumps. drove to beaty chevrolet knoxville tn tues, 2/7/06. replaced throttle assembly & advised noise was from misaligned hood. trailblazer picked up on fri, 2/10/06. paid $200. ext warranty ded. gas empty stopped to fill up. while driving noticed fuel gauge past full mark, appeared to be pointing straight down. noticed tachometer registered 6500 rpms. called beaty chevrolet. service department closed. next day fuel gauge appears correct. after a week refueled and noticed fuel gauge was incorrect again. noticed strong gas odor when vehicle is started & vehicle smoking. called to schedule repairs on 2/28/06. was unable to make appointment rescheduled for tues 3/9/06. beaty informed that it must be guage sensor and not related to previous repair work so another $200. deductible would be due. they were unable to detect fuel odor nor smoking. i disagreed with the $200 charge due to vehicle being defective when i picked it up from the service department on the first visit. beaty chev. said they did not look at the tachometer nor fuel gauge when they service vehicles so they would not have known about the problem. lol .. i called gm warranty and they would not waive the $200 and said the dealership would be responsible. i contacted the dealership again and they thought gm would waived because of the numerous problems with the guage sensors. however they would not admit that they did not check the vehicle when it was being repaired the first visit. i have read numerous complaints regarding reduced power throttle assembly, guage malfunctions, and grinding noise when braking and feel that gm should recall and reimburse the consumer for the repairs they have paid. vehicle is still making grinding noise and now seems to lunge forward when brake is released. i need help and any advice you have to offer. *nm

I have a 03 tb 2wd i have noticed recently that it is not changing gears properly. the service engine light came on and the problem appeared three more times. then the light went off and the problem went away. i took it to the dealer and they hooked it up to the machine and all they could find wrong was my o2 sensor. they said i needed to replace the gas sensor. this has nothing to do with the transmission.(this is what they said) they told me that they were not worried about it. i told them i was about to drive the car on a trip 1,000 miles one way. no problems they said. i called and questioned the dealership and he acted very surprised by this. says he hasn't seen a problem with the transmission. one of my co-workers daughter also has a trailblazer and hers has started to act up as well, and guess what it is the same thing as mine. i went on this web site and found out that this is a common problem with the tb. is there anything that can be done about this madness? http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef15323/65. *nm

When filling the fuel tank on 2003 trailblazers with fuel pump equipped with accordion neck sleeves, fuel has the possibility of back flushing out the top of the tank neck. i experience this on multiple gas stations here in california with multiple 2003 trailblazers. about 1 cup of gasoline flows over the intake and on to the car and ground causing a serious hazard. the back flow spill does not seem to occur on every type of fuel pump, but only on those equipped with certain sleeves over the nozzle. other trailblazer owners i have talked to in my area also experience this problem. the dealer has not only not been able to duplicate the problem at their local station but has no remedy for the multiple times we have brought the vehicle in for service. *nlm

When 2003 chevrolet trailblazer is filled with gas, gas comes back out of trailbzer to form up to a 2ft. puddle of gas on the ground! gas up to 2ft. wide down the paint! my 2 1/2 year old son strapped in car seat and others have been inside when this has happened, mainly at renton wa. safeway gas pumps, but other pumps as well! i told good chevrolet in renton wa. as far back as april 2003 of this problem and at first they claimed their was no problems whatsoever with trailblazers, but some chevy tahoe suv's had the problem! maybe i didn't know how to fill a tank, try a different gas station, don't remove nozzle for a few seconds...i tried everything they said and kept calling and telling them of the problem!!! i asked for one of them to come with me and witness it and they declined! by may and june im still telling good chevrolet of the continuing problem! they ask to look at the trailblazers tank and fill tube.. maybe its kinked, fill tube or ball check problem...they said it looks great nothing found, and they filled it with gas at their pump and no gas came out at all! i had told them to fill it at the renton safeway!!!!!,but they didn't!!!! i wonder why?...bob manning the service manager at good chevrolet had been advised of all this in many phone calls to him! now in july they want to replace the filler neck and tank. when they fill it again they still do not go to renton safeway like i told them again..i fill it and gas comes out!!! i call again and ask again for a witness from good chevrolet, finally they send a tech. with me. we drive to renton safeway i put the nozzle in tank, put on the clicker stand back, the tank fills and as they clicker shuts off when the tanks is full, gas comes out and forms a puddle on the ground!!!! i've called the bbb, attorney general and now you...the trailblazer also has large pops of static discharge constantly! i was stone walled with my concerns! *jb

I am being told that my 2003 chevy trailblazer has a cracked gas tank and has been leaking fuel. we have noticed a strong gasoline odor from the outside of the vehicle for a few weeks. apparently, chevy created a 'special policy' when this issue occurred for its 2002 trailblazers, but i am concerned that no attention is being given to the 2003 models. my dealership is replacing the gas tank which normally would have cost approx $1300, however, to get this deal, they are requiring me to pay for the 50k suggested maintenance on the vehicle at a cost of $475. there has been no injury or accident to myself as a result of this defect, but i feel that it is important enough to warrant investigation since this has also occurred in previous models. also, in previous models chevy paid for all of the repairs without requiring the owners to spend money on 'suggested maintenance'. the service bulletin number from chevy for the 2002 models is tsb 05012. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the check engine light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection who determined the filler pipe neck at the top of the fuel storage tank assembly was leaking and needed replaced. the manufacturer was alerted. updated 10/25/2006 - the tank and inlet is a one piece unit. the inlet cracked around the molded flange where it attaches to the fuel tank. this is where the fuel leaked from. *nm

While fueling verhicle, fuel always spills over just before or after auto-shutoff of gas pump. this happens even though i'm careful that it's coming close to a full tank and prepare for the spillage. today it happened at a pump where the fuel pump nozzle was of a non-accordian type boot. i've spoken with others who have the same problem and dealers are telling them to be more careful when re-fueling. what will it take gm to admit there's a design flaw in the fuel delivery system? this is only one of many issues with the trailblazer. you'd think for what they cost that they'd be built better.*ak

Gas filler tube overflows on to the ground almost every time the vehicle is filled up with gas. has done this since purchase. tested different gas stations pumps thinking that was the cause but it does this at all of them about a second or so after the pump clicks off. also the filler tube boot has a built in hole for the gas to drain on to the ground....which ( on the better side i guess) does keep it from getting on the side of the vehicle on occasion.

2003 chevrolet trailblazer. fuel sensor has gone out. the failure was not caused by anything done by the consumer. my fuel gauge constantly reads empty and is no accurate. i talked with the dealership, and even though other vehicles with the same equipment have had recalls issued, they have not issued one for the trailblazer. i know several people who have the exact same problems with their trailblazers (2003 - 2006 models) and it costs approximately $800 to get it fixed at the dealership.

I have a 2003 trailblazer, where the fill spout is on the gas tank, is broke, by talking and checking on the web, there are a lot of people with the same problem, chevrolet said,i hate it for you that i don't live in a high corrosion area, but they have sent a special bulletin for the defect they will not fix it because of where i live. this is dangerous for alot of reasons, fuel leaks for 1 the only remedy is 1,500.00. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving 25 mph, the fuel gauge needle moved to full. upon filling the vehicle with fuel, the gauge remained full for the rest of that day. the following day, when the vehicle was started, the needle went around in a circle (counter clockwise) beyond the full mark. the failure has continued for the past six months. the contact read that the failure was due to a sensor in the gas tank, but has not taken the vehicle to the dealer or a mechanic. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 90,300 and failure mileage was 85,000.

Chevrolet 2003 trailblazer: noticed a large puddle in driveway, which was gasoline. started suv up and the gas just poured out of the vehicle. i was afraid to drive it, but knew i had to do something. i drove it to the nearest repair station, wherein, after inspection it was found to be rotted supply and return lines on fuel pump module. the repair station removed the remaining fuel from the fuel tank; replaced fuel pump module; reinstalled fuel tank; reinstalled fuel. at a total cost of $778.14 used. i am a gm retiree after 33 years of service, and would like to be reimbursed for said amount of money. thank you for your consideration in this expensive matter. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving 25 mph, the contact noticed that the fuel gauge was not registering the correct amount of fuel. occasionally, the gauge would indicate that no fuel was present in the vehicle at all. the vehicle was not inspected and no repairs were made at that time. one year later, the temperature gauge, actuator on the air conditioning/heating system, and the speedometer failed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they confirmed that the actuator failed. the vehicle was repaired at the cost of $720. the manufacturer stated that no compensation would be provided because the failure was not under recall. the failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage was 44,000. updated 4/23/09 *cn updated 04/28/09. *jb
