Defect SummaryCertain sport utility vehicles have windshield wiper systems that will not turn on, cease operation while in use, fail to turn off/on by themselves (moisture sensitive wiper system), or have continuous windshield washer pump operation because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module.
Consequence SummaryDepending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will cover the windshield wiper module vent hole with a patch. also, the wiper motor, circuit board, and electrical connector will be inspected to signs of water intrusion and/or corrosion and be replaced as required. the recall began july 6, 2004. owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438; oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537; or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.

I have a 2003 chevy trailblazer lt. the wipers would not shut off after an afternoon shower. i had to pull the fuse in order for them to shut off. i have contacted the manufacture. they have refused to acknowledge that there is a recall for my vehicle. they are stating that there is no such recall for my vin number. they also stated that there is no such recall for a 2003 trailblazer. my wish is that the nhtsa would force chevy to acknowledge and fix the problem, or at least acknowledge the problem and say that they are not going to fix the problem. the idea that this is limited to some 2003 lts, but not others is rather odd to me. for the manf. to say that no such recall exist is rather odd to me. i do not know the exact purpose or legal reach of the nhtsa. i would hope that they could/will force some sort of resolution for the large number of people that have had this same complaint, and the manf. blantent refusal to acknowledge said issue.

Side mirrors do not stay in position memorized for driver. very unsafe when you go to change lanes and the mirrors are pointing to the sky or ground. the dealer has reprogrammed the remotes, but there is no solution. driver must adjust mirrors every time you turn on vehicle. the problem is much worse if there is a temperature change. this problem has been going on for 5.5 years with this vehicle. other drivers report the same issue with trailblazer. why is there no recall for this? why hasn't chevrolet found out how to fix this? *tr

I turned my windshield wipers on in my car and they would not shut off. well, when i got to my location i shut off the car in which they reset themselves or something, it happened a couple of times till today. i turned them on and now they won't shut off no matter what i do. i read online that there have been recalls about this same problem, so i called chevrolet, and supposedly it doesn't cover my vehicle i am having the same problem as the recalls. my windshield wipers won't shut off. i just can't believe that the same problems that i have with my 2003 chevy trailblazer and the recall is the same and they are telling me that my vehicle is not included. *tr

The middle heat and air conditioner blower would not blow air. the defrost and floor blower did blow out air. as of november 2008 none of the blowers blow out air except for brief occasions. if the blower does work then this creates a problem because it won't shut off and the battery goes dead. i've read about several owners with this same issue. the suggested temporary fix for this issue is to look up from the gas pedal and there are two units, one controls the defrost and foot blower and one controls the middle blower which is harder to get to. it has been identified that there there is a pin for each unit that slipped out and needs to be reconnected. one customer indicated it looked like it was meant to fall out at some point, in other words for gm to make revenue for the repair costs. this is extremely frustrated and i request that this is considered as a recall and gm immediately fix this issue at no cost. gm has given an estimated quote of $800 - $900 to fix the actuary. thank you for your help and this service. *tr

These are all of the problems fixed at the dealer with this truck so far: rear sway bar links replaced, rear wiper blade came out of alignment 2 times, right rear door is warped, driver side rear molding is loose, back plate rubber seal out of alignment, windshield wiper tank replaced since it was leaking, a/c low pressure switch inop then replaced, windshield wiper module replaced because wipers would not turn off, sway bar links replaced for a second time. all of these have broken over the past 2 years and nine months and driver's side passenger window for that door is loose. still is a noise in the front suspension that makes a hard knock onto the steering column but dealer denies hearing it. *nm

My 11-month old 2003 chevrolet trailblazer has had multiple quality problems, twice affecting my safety. most of the problems have been electrical in nature. the 4wd has become inoperable numerous times, once while driving in snow. in another incident during a severe thunderstorm at night the air conditioner (a/c) failed and i was unable to defrost my windshield in order to see. after one dealer failed to diagnose the 4wd problem, another dealer replaced my ignition switch because the technician said i had no power at all going to the rear grid. i continue to have intermittent electrical problems, including near stalling at a traffic light, and ongoing 4wd failures. the car also has very jerky motion when in 4wd reverse, of course, when the 4wd is working at all. the dealer told me that was normal and now i see there is a service bulletin on the problem. *la

2003 chevrolet trailblazer lx. consumer states problem with rear window and replacement *tgw the consumer stated the rear window was replaced four times. the consumer stated he is driving around without a rear window, because he doesn't have the funds to replace it and chevrolet corporate refused to cover the replacement cost. in march 2003, the cowling above the rear window became displaced of its own accord and a short time later, the back window shattered upon it being opened. roughly, three and half years later, the window once again spontaneously shattered. there were no cracks in the window, and there was no apparent impact to the window. the consumer stated he merely opened it, and it shattered. the dealer replaced the window again, but at the consumer's expense, as the warranty had expired. in january 2011, the window once again spontaneously shattered upon it being opened. the dealer informed the consumer, he would be charged full price to replace the window. *jb

After putting the drivers window down at a fast food drive thru it would not go back up. this was in january, very cold in michigan. dealer said moisture must have gotten into switch and the whole module had to be replaced. i asked if that means the doors can't be opened when it was raining, he said yes they can but for some reason gm has a lot of drivers door window switches going bad on the trailblazers. the cost to have it replaced was $430 which we paid seeing how only the dealer can program the new switch. it's now one year later and the same switch has gone bad again, i called the dealer but were over the 12,000 mile warranty. it will cost another $430 to replace again. *tr

 (1) i purchased my vehicle (2003 chevrolet trailblazer 4wd) in may of 2003. i have taken my car to be fixed on a couple of occasions. namely recalls. around august of 2005, my rear driver side window ceased functioning. the rear windows of my car have been the least used and for the forementioned window to cease functioning seamed odd. (2) because of the failure of the rear driver side window, i have to prop the window in place to prevent rain from coming in and ruining my vehicle interior. (3) nothing has been done to correct this failure. i have taken my car by the local chevrolet dealership, but they wish to charge my around $250 to fix the problem. i am capable of fixing the problem myself for just under $100. vehicle is no longer covered under warranty because at the time (which was under the 3 year warranty date) i had exceeded the 36,000 mile mark by about 4-5k miles. as a side note, i have spoken with a couple of other trailblazer owners and others have had this same problem. if you are not familiar with the window regulator, its design allows for the pulley chords that connect to the top and bottom of the window to get caught with in the regulator. when this happens, too much stress and strain is put on the plastic regulator and a break will occur. *nm

My 03 chevy trailblazer is equipped with power/memory outside mirrors. the mirrors will not stay in one place when set. they will move at start up and while i am driving. this creates a serious safety issue for lane changing on multi lane highway. i have talked with other owners who have experienced the same problem. it seems that a software update might fix it but the mirror motors must be replaced also. this seems to happen after the warranty has expired. once again this can cause a real safety problem. *jb

Owned 03 trailblazer for 4 months and has given me electrical & mechanical problems. i had one problem since i first bought this vehicle and now i have 13 things that are a danger to me and my family. ac turns on by itself whether car is off or on. ac has turned on while i was driving frightening the hell out of me causing me to almost lose control of the wheel. ac ,engine lacks horse power, hand brake, hazard lights, lights turn off, mirrors move by themselves, car boggs as if it wants to turn off, while driving steering wheel moves by itself, gas gauge has read low fuel when gas is full. i am terrified the car will give out with my child and i in it.i have tried to have vehicle repaired numerous times and still dealer can't seem to duplicate the problem. the vehicle is a hazard to me and my family and to all those who own one. need the problem to be fixed before any tragedies occur. *ak

I have had my 03 trailblazer at the dealership 3 times for the outside mirrors. i have disabled curb-view assist and the mirrors still cannot remember their settings. normally i can set the mirrors, get out of the car and turn it off for a few minutes, like at the gas station, and then get in and have to re-set them again. it does not matter if it is driver 1 or driver 2, the settings do not stay. sometimes i get in, start the car and the mirror adjusts so i can see my elbow and the side of the trailblazer. other times i get in and cannot see any part of the trailblazer in the mirror. i have been told, by the deleaship, that this is an issue that chevrolet is aware of and there is not a solution yet, but chevrolet is working on one. they will let me know when there is a fix. does this sound like good business and excellent customer service to you?

Curb view assist, mirrors after being properly set to the curb view position while in reverse will from time to time stay in the curb view setting after vehicle is placed into drive or park. the only way i have found to get them to come back into driving position is to move them using the mirror controller or to turn the vehicle off and then restart vehicle. *nlm

Curb view assist. after properly setting both outside mirrors to my desired placement for curb view assist in reverse, the mirrors will forget their proper placement. it takes approx 10 -15 times into reverse for them to eventually not even move, although the curb view assist is being displayed in the driver information center. dealer had vehicle in for service on may 5 03 and was to check this problem. dealer advised could not duplicate working per gm specifications. *nlm

I am filing a complaint .and will continue to file complaints until all of the consumers issues have been addressed. i understand that gm is not willing to hold theirselfs liable for these issues ,but people spend pretty pennies out of pocket to purchase vehicles from these manufacturers to spend more money to pay for repairs after just a short while of owning these . i have researched issues i am having with my vehicle , and i am having all the above listed issues , and do not wish to spend large amounts of money to pay for these cost considering i am still paying for this vehicle . i just spoke with a representive about these complaints ,and have set up an appoinment to pay a dealership for diagnostics , but am hoping that i can get closure on these issues without paying big expenses. i hope everyone else will follow suit and keep inputting your complaints until they are resolved. my vehicle issues are the fan clutch needs replaced, my gas tank has been replaced already, just replaced my serpintine belt this morning, my exterior lights (brake/turn signal) have been replaced 3 times over two months, and engine light keeps coming on , something doesnt seem right underneath this vehicle either. i just feel like i am paying for a peice of junk on top of paying to keep the vehicle running. oh yea this vehicle has had to have thousands of dollars of body work done as well thanks to mother nature. i just hope they will be responsible enough to take on this responsibilty of theirs ,not ours.

The windshield wipers on my 2003 chevrolet trailblazer ls would continuously operate once activated and would not stop unless the car was turned off. inspection by a chevrolet dealership found that water had gotten into the wiper motor and shorted it out. chevrolet had issued a recall (04v046000) for this exact malfunction in 2004. however, they refused to repair the malfunction as should be required as the malfunction was the fault of the manufacturer. chevrolet claimed that my car's vin was not identified to have this problem associated with it and couldn't be repaired at their expense. this explanation is clearly ridiculous as the malfunction i was experiencing was the exact type they had identified for that make/model/year. while no accident occurred, the malfunction of the wiper in a critical moment such as during a storm could have caused problems. the dealership replaced the motor and i had to pay out of my own pocket for their refusal to stand by their product. *nm

It was a snowy day and i had my front windshield wipers on. when the snow stopped i tried to turn them off but they would not stop. i was on a business trip and ended up having to pull the fuse to stop them. i was forced to only drive the car when wipers were not necessary or have them on all the time. i took the car into the local dealer and they said i needed a new wiper motor and module. i looked up for recalls and found one that seemed to cover my situation but was told by the dealer and gm customer service that my particular vin number was not included even though it was the same year, make and model. obviously i have to go ahead with the repair regardless. dealer has ordered the part and it should be ready in 2 days. *nm

Our windshield wipers were inoperable. the wiper switch was turned on with absolutely no response from the wipers. the dealership has replaced it. however, other electrical problems keep occurring. for example, our air conditioning switch malfunctioned, the onstar did not send tracking information properly, the alternator needed to be replaced, and the fan for the heater would not work at any speed except low. we have only had this vehicle since august. i am thinking that this in an electrical problem instead of each individual piece being faulty. please let us know if you are hearing more of the same types of information. *la

The problem that i have with my truck is an electric problem involving the light relays, which i ad to replace several times due to them being damaged, leaving me without lights. my main concern is that i drive at night often and i am in danger when i have the lights on and off. i did research on several forums where same-vehicle-owners have experienced the same issues.
