EXTERIOR LIGHTING - BRAKE LIGHTS
EA04021GENERAL MOTORS CORP.08/03/200411/04/2004BRAKE LAMP FAILURE04V527000
Gm states that some brake/tail lamp bulbs can prematurely become inoperative due to malfunctioning brake/tail lamp sockets.on march 2, 2004, gm initiated a 6-year/72,000 mile special policy for 989,487 subject vehicles to inspect and replace the rear brake/tail lamp bulb socket assemblies.on april 4, 2004, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe04-032) based on consumer complaints alleging brake lights not operating when the brake pedal is depressed.on august 3, 2004 odi upgraded pe04-032 to an engineering analysis (ea04-021).by letter dated october 27, 2004 gm notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa # 04v527) covering subject vehicles that were not already repaired under gm's special policy.my 2004 subject vehicles built after august 8, 2003 contain improved brake lamp assemblies and are not included in the recall.gm dealers will install the improved brake lamp assembly on subject vehicles built on august 8, 2003 and earlier.the action taken by gm is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.
PE04032GENERAL MOTORS CORP.04/06/200408/03/2004BRAKE LAMP FAILURE
The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation on model year (my) 2002-04 chevrolet trailblazer vehicles.gm reports that other vehicles sharing this platform and brake lamp design are the my 2002-2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext; gmc envoy, xl, xuv; oldsmobile bravada and 2004 buick rainier.complaints allege that the rear brake lamp does not operate when the brake pedal is depressed.there is no indication to the driver from inside the vehicle that one or more brake lamps bulbs are not functioning.gm found that heat from the bulb could deform the lamp socket, produce electrical arcing and an inoperative bulb.to correct the condition, gm changed the bulb to a bulb that transmits less heat to the socket and changed the socket to a thermoplastic polymer to improve thermal stability.these changes were implemented into production vehicles on october 1, 2003.gm implemented a special policy by notifying consumers that if they should experience a brake lamp failure to go to their gm dealership to have the circuit board containing the brake lamp replaced along with new bulbs.this policy is good for the first 6 years or 72,000 miles of the life of the vehicle.odi will upgrade this investigation to ea 04-021 and include the above mentioned vehicles.

When i first purchased this vehicle i thought i had a great suv. little did i know that within the first month of owning it did i make a huge mistake. i am a single mother of 2 kids. i checked out the crash ratings and they were great!! i liked everything about my tb. looking back, after the 4th problem within that first month. i should have ran away screaming from it, as i do now daily. the lights flicker when you drive at night. the headlights constantly go out. the check gauges light is constantly coming on. the oil pressure gauge drops for no apparent reason. the tach goes crazy. the bell for the lights (when you have the keys out and the lights are still on, or when you have the keys in and the drivers door open) works when it wants to. the battery guage works when it feels like it. the gas guage hasn't had a problem lately. i am wondering...doesn't all of that constitue as a safety problem?? i have had the lights looked at and am told there isn't anything that can be done..really?? i am going to have to have the guages looked at now and from what i see it will cost about $600-$800. where other chevy vehicles have had this covered under a recall. there are many other problems i've had, the o2 sensor, temp guage, other lighing issues that i have taken care of but this is getting to be a bit much. i see many others have had this problem. it can't be from normal wear on the vehicle. please do something about this before someones family really gets hurt, if they haven't already.

I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer; while driving on the highway; all guages, lights, etc. abruptly stopped working and continue to not work. i researched on line and found it could be what is called the cluster board. i took my vehicle to a local chevy dealer in daytona beach fl. they insisted it was the ignition switch. they replaced that mechanism for just under $300. the following week (this occurred in 2010); the exact same situation recurred; so i brought it back to the dealer and they then agreed it was the cluster board which would now cost me close to $700.00. in order to avoid being ripped off to the tune of almost $1k; i purchased a gps unit so i could at least monitor my speed. the speed/rpms never register correctly; however, so far the other guages seems to be ok (except for the oil pressure, it goes out of whack frequently so i just bring it in quickly to make sure i have sufficient oil and that it's clear/clean). most recently my headlights just go out without warning; i am able to use the high beams, but of course that puts me in jeopardy of getting a ticket. there are so many complaints on the 2004 chevy trailblazer - i do not understand why there has not been a recall on the cluster board and the electrical issues (lighting). i cannot afford to have all the repairs completed and would like to see chevrolet take on some responsibility for the cost of these flaws in the manufacturing of this vehicle.

My head lights don't come on randomly. randomly they do. obviously, this is a serious safety issue especially at night. no, it's not light bulb replacemet issues.....other blog sites have complained about the same issues. very dangerous!!!! the gas gauge also is not working properly. when the gas gets low it blinks on for a second then adds more gas to the panel. people could run out of gas unknowingly. also very dangerous!

I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer that has defective headlights. it started over a year ago, but was rare. when i drive at night the lights suddenly go out. the parking light and the high beams still work. it has been getting more frequent and in the last month it has happened several times. my engine light has also been on for months. i have had a diagnostic test done by a mechanic and he informed me that i had a loose gas cap. i bought a new one and it has not resolved that problem. now i wonder if it remains on because of the light issue. this is a problem because i live in an unincorporated area that has minimal lighting at night. i have looked on the internet and there several people have reported that same issue.
03/24/2010101000
2004 chevrolet trailblazer, while driving at night the low beam lights went out, i had to drive home with high beams on, this is a major concern, it is unsafe on the road. it has happen several time, they usually come back on, but not this time.

2004 chevy trailblazer - intermittent flickering of exterior lights. headlights sporadically flicker during normal night time driving. flickering may occur multiple times during trip and then not occur again for several weeks. problem began at approximately 50,000 miles. it is very frightening and is probably very distracting to other drivers. *tr
08/19/200875000
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. sporadically, while driving various speeds, the headlights completely failed. the contact's visibility was reduced. the technician stated that the relay was the cause of the failure; however, the repair would have to wait because the parts were on backorder. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 80,000.
11/14/2008749781
The low beam headlight quit working after further investigation found all fuses to be in good working order as well as all relays and the dimmer switch, after checking the bulbs in the low beam assembly the bulbs were not charred or burnt and the filament was still in contact as normal, after reading some excerpts on another website this is an all to familiar incident. luckily we were not driving at night and no one was injured thankfully. its time for a recall before someone is injured and or killed from this type of manufacturing malfunction. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving approximately 25 mph, the contact noticed that the low beams were not working, which caused him to activate the high beams. since that time, the low beams have worked intermittently. the dealer advised the contact to leave the vehicle in their possession so it could be repaired. the manufacturer stated that they were not liable for the repairs. the vehicle has not been repaired or diagnosed. the current mileage was 82,000 and failure mileage was 81,700.

While driving headlights dim very low to the point that you can not see. doesn't happen every time. dashboard lights also go very low. vehicle taken in to dealership in april. tech says can not duplicate problem. car taken in again this time cd player will stop playing if volume is turned all the way down for more that 2 mins. in order to make it play again you have to eject cd and reinsert. radio was suppose to be ordered never received it. car taken in again this time different dealership found problem with radio and it was replaced asked for them to check headlights because problem still happens. they also cannot duplicate problem. after leaving dealership cd players stops play again. sept 28, 2005 while at bank drive through car stalls out, able to restart car. took vehicle to dealership told them about the stalling out, headlights, and cd player. after having my car there a week and 3 days there conclusion was that the stalling out was because the was carbon build up in throttle body this was cleaned out. my car has 19,000 miles and is a year old i don;t believe this is the problem. while there a new cd player was put in, i was told that the one that was replaced before was a refurbished one and it didn't surprise them that it didn't work. the headlights we were told that we were crazy at first and then after speaking with the service manager was told that my vehicle has california emissions which means we have a 2nd air intake on it that causes the alternator to drain causing the lights to dim. gm has told us this is normal!!!!!! i am sorry i am not willing to put my family lives on the line because i happen to buy a new car in virginia that was made in california. i leave in a rural area not the city so if i lose my headlights then that means i can't see. this doesn't mean anything to them. we do have a meeting in nov with the northern area manager. this is not a normal operation of a car nor should it be designed to do this. *nm

2004 trailblazer has 40 second turn on of headlights and back up lights when remote key used to unlock doors. this has on 2 occasions has caused vehicles in travel lanes to suddenly brake because with the back up lights on blazer appears to be backing into traffic. solution: only occurs after dark, so must be relayed thru daylight running detector. needs to do as brake and turn signals do, flash on and then off. headlights have stayed on shining into a group who threaten me with bodily harm. dealer said a gm problem, they can't change. had 2002,2001,1998 blazers, never a problem. *ak
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - BRAKE LIGHTS
08/03/20058
My complaint is on the chevrolet trailblazer. i have personally witnessed at least 8 instances in my area where the brake lights on the trailblazer don't work. the 3rd light on top of the lift gate works, but the regular brake lights don't work. every time it has been both of them not working. that leads me to believe it isn't just a bulb being burnt out. i have luckily not witnessed any accidents resulting from this issue, but my father owns a trailblazer and if there is something wrong electrically causing this problem i don't want the same thing to happen to his resulting in him potentially being rear ended. i saw one on i94 just east of i696 yesterday. i notified the woman and she said that she knew so hopefully it is just the bulbs, but i don't know for sure. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact stated that the instrument panel has not worked since she purchased the vehicle brand new in january of 2004. the warning indicators are constantly illuminated. she took the vehicle to the dealer several times while it was under warranty, but they could not locate the failure. due to the failure, she does not know how fast she is driving, how much fuel is in the vehicle, and cannot read the odometer. recently, the headlights failed and she took the vehicle back to the dealer. the dealer charged $91 to diagnose the failure, which produced a failure code at the headlight low beam relay cluster switch. the dealer replaced the low beam relay switch and ignition switch, but the failure persisted. now that the vehicle is out of warranty, the dealer has finally located a diagnostic code for the instrument panel failure. the dealer stated that the instrument panel cluster failed and would cost $600 to repair. the failure mileage was 9,000 and current mileage was 68,000. updated 4/14/09 *cn the air bag light illuminated. updated 04/17/09. *jb

Whenever i drive at night the exterior and interior lights flicker and sometimes go out completely when i brake or allow the truck to coast. when i use the gas the problem resolves but since i have to stop sometime this isn't a good fix. the electrical gauge on my dash fluxuate with the lights going from low to high and back again. i've taken into 2 dealerships but they can't duplicate the problem i work nights so i am driving mostly during the night. how is it save for a young woman to drive alone at night without lights? this is an ongoing problem that has happened since i purchased the truck and has not been resolved. *tr

I was just reading the complaints & thought i would submit a few of my own. gas fillling is always a task as tank always seems to overflow & gas sprays out everywhere. i was told it is because of the type of filler line that gm uses. headlights constantly going from normal to dim, to dimmer, then back to normal, regardless of driving conditions. saw the one from the person being shocked, this too has always happened to me since the first day i bought the trailblazer. if i touch the metal of the door upon exiting the vehicle theres a large jolt from static electricity i assume. the arc from this jolt is very visible & i estimate it to 2 inches in length at times (longer your in the vehilce...bigger the arc). all the rubber trim on the backhath has come off. plastic lining used on fenderwells constantly coming loose & must be reatached. carpet around pedals has all come loose. i bought this vehicle nov. 1 2004 & it is hardly been driven with only 6,000 miles yet seems to be falling apart already. *jb

EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TAIL LIGHTS
06/15/2005211/09/2003
I have replaced the light bulbs on the back of my car 3 times and asked the agency to replace the whole part or casing after i found a recall that the taillights were defective. i informed chevrolet of where i found the recalls , i was told this website is only opinions from other people that don't know what they are talking about. i was told in the agency that the problem was only on 2003 models and not 2004's. the agency said they would replace the whole part anyways but the next day a police officer almost gave me a ticket because he said i failed to indicate i was going to make a left hand turn on a one lane road. i've taken my car to the agency twice for that problem and obviously they haven't replace the part. my car is less than two years old and it has given me problems beyond that one. *nm
