During the course of this ea investigation, odi observed that the majority of the complaints (88%) and warranty claims (94%) were reported for vehicles that are registered for use in the salt belt region of the us.this area includes 20 states in the northeast, mid atlantic and the midwest regions and the district of columbia.consumers in the salt belt region reported to odi that they could smell fuel vapors in their vehicles while driving.upon further examination of their vehicles, they discovered that fuel vapors were coming out of the top of the fuel tank. this condition is caused by corrosion of the return and sender lines of the fuel pump module.water and road salt collect on top of the fuel pump leading to small pinholes appearing on the fuel lines.fuel may leak and collect on top of the module and/or spill onto the ground.the data evaluated under this investigation reflect a relatively low frequency of occurrence that largely arises in salt belt states.gm has extended the warranty on the subject component to ten years or 120,000 miles.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time; accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.for additional information select document search.

Fuel gauge has been fluctuating wildly for a couple of months, generally reading empty (even after fill up) but occasionally full (when a fill up is needed). dealer said fuel gauge sensor was bad & that it would be approx $900 to fix. looking into the problem online i see there are thousands of people with the same problem.

We have a low mileage 2004 chevy trail blazer (under 45,000 miles as of september 2011). in march 2011, the check engine light illuminated. we had the oil changed and tried some fixes with the battery cables. all reset the engine light, but each time the light would again illuminate after several days had passed. in august 2011, we took it to texas auto service to have them test the engine light sensor and we then paid for them to replace the canister vent solenoid. once again, the light turned off for a period of days and then came back on. in late september we took it to firestone - and after 2 days of testing, it was determined that the fuel tank had a crack. we then picked it up from firestone and took it to bankston cheverolet in ft worth - after another day of testing, they concurred and we were forced to pay $1336.18 to have the fuel tank replaced... otherwise we ran the risk of a fire. we did research and find that many of the gm trucks have had recalls on this specific failure - but not our specific year/model and vin number.

While getting a tuneup, third party mechanic advised me that there was a crack in the neck of the gas tank, where the filler tube meets the tank itself. i was advised there was a recall on the 2003 chevy trailblazer for the same defect. i was also advised there was a nhtsa investigation. i was told my vin# did not fall within the recall. the third party mechanic advised $800 to replace the tank. i called gm customer service and was told to take it to a gm dealer and have a gm certified mechanic verifiy the third party mechanic's findings. i did so and was charged by the gm dealer to verify there was a crack. when gm customer service called back and verified that there was a problem, they assigned me to a gm customer assistance representative who would investigate if they could assist me with the repairs. approximately 10 days later i was advised that they would not be able to assist me because the problem i was experiencing was due to age and mileage of the vehicle. there are numerous reports of owners of 2004 chevy trailblazer owners on the internet that have experienced the exact same problem with fractured, cracked and broken connections on the gas tank where the filler tube meets the tank. i don't understand why a recall for this has not been issued. my vehicle is 7 years old and has less than 90,000 miles on it. we don't live in a state that is considered to be a corrosive hazard state. if the same problem is happening to the same part on the same vehicle, what is keeping a recall from being issued?????????

My head lights don't come on randomly. randomly they do. obviously, this is a serious safety issue especially at night. no, it's not light bulb replacemet issues.....other blog sites have complained about the same issues. very dangerous!!!! the gas gauge also is not working properly. when the gas gets low it blinks on for a second then adds more gas to the panel. people could run out of gas unknowingly. also very dangerous!

Instrument panel failure, ran out of gas on a busy four lane highway during morning rush hour. i was in the left hand lane and was unable to move to the shoulder. i now became a major traffic problem until some nice citizen helped me push the truck out of harms way, having to stop both lanes of traffic so i could cross. had i a working gas gauge i feel this would not have happened, none of the instruments in the vechile work, chevy has recalled other models of this year with the same problems, but not the trailblazer. why?

Crack in fuel tank 2004 chevy trailblazer ls. crack is just below where the filler tube goes into tank. i have researched online and find that this is a common problem but there is no recall. i am concerned about a fire and explosion. a new fuel tank from the dealer is over $1000. i have tried to patch it but it is made of a special plastic that is herd to repair.

2004 chevy trailblazer ls 4wd. i had noticed a strong smell of gasoline. about two days later my service engine soon light came on. i took it to a mechanic to have it checked out and was told that there was an evaporative leak detected according to the codes that the computer was giving. the mechanic then checked the vehicle further and notice that there was a hairline fracture in the fuel tank near the filler nozzle. i was told that this was a very common problem with this vehicle and he told me to contact chevy for a possible recall. i did contact chevy and was told there was no recall but i could take it to a chevy dealership and have it fixed at my expense. i can not even park this vehicle in my garage for risk of a fire and the vehicle can not pass emissions inspection because it has a leak. i have received a citation for failure to inspect because it wont pass the inspection process. it will cost me approx $800 to have this fixed.

Gas gage reading is incorrect. the gas gage reads 3/4 immediately after a fill-up and then reads empty soon thereafter.
10/10/201070000
The fuel gauge does not work properly. it sometimes indicates there is more fuel than there actually is in the tank. sometimes it shows it is empty when it is not.

Check engine light came on; has come on recurrently since (code p0442), which indicates leak in fuel evap system. analyzed by independent tech and powers-swain chevrolet (a gm dealer) verifies fuel tank inlet check valve fracture. gm's resolution to date is refusal to act due to age/mileage of car. gm has a recall for same defect on long body 2002-2004 models. their campaign 07099a is part of their recall. i have seen many other trailblazer fuel system problems on internet sites. this defect allows fuel vapor (possibly ignitable) to escape in the vicinity of electrical connections. there needs to be a recall on this defect, regardless of age/mileage of vehicles.

On my 2004 trailblazer, my wife complained about gas fumes in the car. i noticed gas streaming from around the top of gas tank. i dropped the gas tank down and noticed the leak was streaming from one of the metal lines exiting from the fuel pump. the corrosion was so bad i only had to lightly push on the metal line and it broke into. if my wife didn't smell the fumes this could have burst into a fire if it eventually sprayed onto the exhaust system.

Chevrolet trailblazer has has check engine light on. i can smell gas when vehicle is in garage. looked underneath and found a crack in the fuel tank filler hose flange. called chevy and found there is a service bullitin, #05012 and tsb 07076. chevrolet told me the same problem has been found and fixed on models as the trailblazer, but my vehicle would not be covered. the reason is my vehicl is registered in tennessee and is not on the corrosion list of states. i did not see the diffrence as there are vehicles documented having the same problem as mine.

2004 trailblazer gas gauge does not work. my husband filled the truck up with gas and next morning the gauge went from e to past f and does not read anything now. this is the 2nd sensor to go out. the rpm sensor also went out a year ago. talked to the dealer ship, they said to contact nhtsa and let them know. i read online and there are several complaints about the sensors going out and gm knowing they have issues.

2004 trailblazer, been having issues from 30k milles on with check engine light and they kept telling me bad fuel cap, after about a doz or more new caps now leaking filler tube. found out this is the cause of the check engine lights. fuel can leak out and cause a fire not to mention damage to the enviroment. 2004 ext versions were recalled but not the ls's why??? in wisconsin and when checking the interent found hundreds of complaints with the same issue. how long will it take before action is done with this problem? does someone need to die??

Fuel sending unit stops sending correct information to the fuel gauge causing improper fuel level reading which lead to inadvertently running out of fuel in middle of the highway. fuel gate will stay at 1/4 full the entire time. with a full tank of gas the gauge still reads 1/4 full. the operator has to guess how much gas is left in the tank.

I have a 2004 trailblazer lt with 94,931 miles and am the original driver. the check engine light came on 2-3 years ago and i have taken to several different mechanics to diagnose with no success. in june 2010 i took into the local chevy dealership for 100k service and was told i had a cracked fuel tank filler neck which i had to replace at a cost of ~$1000. this fixed the check engine light as well. chevrolet is aware of this fuel tank issue and denies there is an issue with any model except 2002-2003 trailblazer ext's and gmc envoy xl models under tsb 05012. in reviewing the nhtsa website it is apparent the scope of this problem goes beyond these models. the local dealership advised they were aware the trailblazer models had issues with the fuel tank but referred us to general motors as there was no tsb from gm for this model. i spoke to 3 separate people at gm customer assitance who advised they would investigate and came back within 3 business days and denied any responsibility. i questioned gm about the numerous occurances of cracked or corroded fuel tank filler neck issues and referenced the nhtsa website. they advised the nhtsa website, where many of these cases are documented, is not a gm recognized website for this type of issue and was essentially told they (gm) ignored complaints from this website. i was advised by the gm rep nothing else would be considered and when i asked for someone higher at gm to speak with was told they couldn't provide anymore information. when asked for the corporate address and ceo info i was told they wouldn't give that information out but i could look it up on the internet. bottom line is chevolet does not stand behind their safety claims or vehicle issues and i feel compelled to have this documented on the nhtsa website.

 1. there is no event that led to the failure, rather it is a crack at the gas tank neck, which is covered on document 07099a for the chevrolet trailblazer ext, however i have the trailblazer lt which suffers from the same symptoms. 2. as it is a crack there is fuel leaking as well as fumes into the vehicle cabin. 3. gm does not want to cover the cost to fix the replacement of the fuel tank and labor as covered for the trailblazer ext.

My gas tank always reads empty and the fuel light is always on. occasionally after a fill up, it will appear that i have a small amount of gas, but soon returns to empty. for the last 6 months or more i have had to reset my milage trip gauge every time i fill up and watch the milage so i don't run out of gas. this is extremely inconvenient. also, one night about 2 weeks ago, my speedometer was reading 20 miles an hour more than the speed we were travelling. even after we stopped completely, the gauge read 20 mph. the next day it was once again normal and has been since, but this was very strange.

My 2004 chevy trailblazer will not accept gasoline. i had a 1/4 tank left and went to a gas station. to my surprise the vehicle would not let me fill the tank. i was first told that the vent might be dirty then a cylinder in the gas tanks system might have failed. the mechanic found a bulletin that said i had to replace the fuel tank filler upper pipe and lower hose because of vapors filling up inside. i paid for gas that ended up all over the ground instead of in my tank. i called the dealer to find out that a bulletin is different then a recall so they were not entitled to pay for it. i purchased in 2009 and gm knows about it but will not recall it. what if it explodes in the gas station from the vapors. who's fault would it be then. i had no idea and would never buy a chevy again. first i had a problem with the check engine light coming on when the gas cap was not put back on right and now i can't even get gas. what good is a vehicle if you can't use it. i am still paying for it. as soon as it paid for i will be trading it in. the dealer gave me a smo about a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. when i bought it had 62,500 miles already on it. why should i pay for something they knew was a problem but won't recall. please recall this vehicle. in reading the bulletins for this vehicle i found that there are problems with the electrical system, the air bags, the fuel system, the transmission, speedometer, etc. how many problems do you need for one vehicle or are they waiting for someone to get killed over it. the bulletin says that a small amount of fuel may spit back out. well that is a lie. all the fuel in the 1/4 tank spilled out on the ground and i paid for the gas i could not get in the tank. gm is no help, dealer is no help. the only one that was straight up with me was the mechanic. i am going to hate to see the bill for this one. my tax dollars at work. i agree why should we bail out the auto companies when they don't care what kind of vehicle they produce. *tr

My 2004 trailblazer kicked into full speed while i was traveling in an icy road at 20 mph. it automatically switched to 4 wheel drive, spun at a 90 deg. went into a deep ditch, spun back straight and headed up the ditch, again full speed, into a culvert and totaled the vehicle. both air bag sensors were knocked off the vehicle and neither one opened. i was not injured. shook up a little. traveling alone and coming home from church on a sunday morning at noon. *tr

On january 25, 2010, the check engine light came on. i took my car in to the dealer on january 28. they said there was a crack where the filler tube attaches to the fuel tank, and the entire tank/filler tube assy would have to be replaced, at a cost of over $1300. three mechanics at the dealership told me this is a very common failure, they have seen it many times. they said i could look for a used tank to save money on the repair, but they did not recommend it because all those tanks fail. i did some checking on line and found that this is indeed a common failure. i called the gm consumer help line and asked for some help on the repair cost, since this is apparently a design flaw and a common failure. the assigned me service request, but a few days later called back and said that gm would not help out on the repair cost. my car is a 2004 trailblazer with 67,500 miles, and thus out of warranty, but i believe gm should still be at least partially responsible for a common failure. *tw *tr

The service engine light on our chevy 2004 trailblazer ls came on. took the vehicle to our mechanic who said there is a small crack in the fuel tank. i drove the vehicle out of town to a mechanic we highly trust explained the problem and were advised to take the vehicle to the dealership because he believed there was a special warranty in place for emissions problems. while at the dealership they confirmed there is a fuel tank inlet check valve fracture and should be covered under the special coverage adjustment #07099a. at the end of the day i was told my particular vehicle could not be covered because of the break in the vin number. i then contacted gm personally and talked to a specialist who said she would have to look into it. she got back to me and basically said there is nothing gm can do because the warranty only covers the ext model, even though this is obviously a factory defect and a safety hazard! i was told my vehicle would be used for future evidence that this seems to be occurring in our particular model trailblazer ls. so we are left with a cracked fuel tank that gm refuses to take care of. *tr

My 2004 chevrolet trailblazer 4wd has 41,000 miles on the odometer. recently the service engine soon (ses) light became illuminated. personal inspection of the vehicle revealed a small crack in the plastic fuel tank. the crack was located at the weld or joint where the plastic fuel fill pipe connects to the tank. this fill pipe also houses the fuel tank inlet check valve (icv). as my vehicle was past the three-year - 36,000 mile warranty period i attempted to glue the leaking crack. this held for a few weeks, the ses light went out and there was no odor or appearance of gasoline leaking from the area. eventually, though, the leak returned, evidenced by the ses light illumination and gasoline leaking from the repaired area. another repair attempt was made and is currently under observation. this exact problem appears to be detailed in general motors document id# 1985459; subject: special coverage adjustment - fuel tank inlet check valve fracture #07099 - (06/07/2007). this referenced document only pertains to 2002-2004 chevrolet trailblazer ext and gmc envoy xl, both longer wheelbase models than my standard ls model. upon my discovery of this manufacturer known problem with this vehicle model, i took my trailblazer to the local chevrolet dealer today. the service consultant said he was not familiar with my problem and was unable to access the computer database for any relevant documents for my vehicle. he did take a copy of the above referenced special coverage adjustment document and promised a return call tomorrow. *tr

Hello i am writing concerning my 2004 chevy trailblazer. when i first bought this vehicle the gauges all messed up and it would say i was going 90 when i wasn't moving at all. now, the dealer went ahead and fixed that for me, but now the gas gauge is screwing up, it will say i have more gas then i have, it's been doing this for about 2 months now, and i've ran out of gas three times with my babies in the car. i did some research and there are alot of complaints about the exact same thing. when is this going to be recalled? how many complaints does it take? this is very dangerous, i have to drive 1000 miles soon, my husband is deployed now to iraq and i am suppose to go to visit family and i'm scared to do that in this vehicle and its all i have. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. the contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline coming from the vehicle. in addition, the engine warning indicator illuminated sporadically on the instrument control panel. she took her vehicle to the dealer and they stated that fuel vapors were leaking and collecting on top of the module. the failure caused fuel to spill onto the ground. the contact would have to pay $1,300 to have the vehicle repaired because it was not registered in a salt belt state. secondly, she noticed that the gauges on the instrument panel were inoperative and displayed inaccurate information. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in the manufacturer's recall for the instrument control panel; therefore, she would have to pay $550 to repair the component. currently, no repairs have been made. the failure mileage was 66,000 and current mileage is 73,000. updated 3/11/09 *cn updated 03/13/09. *jb

I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer lt. on the gas tank where the fill neck is connected to it, the seam is cracked and leaks gas. i have tried to have the tank repaired but with no success. i have contacted gm and visited a chevy dealership about this concern and they want me to pay $1,300 + plus change the tank. this vehicle has not been damaged in a wreck. this is simply a defective part that causes a huge safety concern for me. i have read of other trailblazer gas tanks cracking at the same location that resulted in a campaign to replace them. i think that gm should replace these tanks that crack before they result in a fire and cause damage or injury. gm and the dealership have demonstrated no concern for my safety and that of my family. i feel that this safety issue should eb dealt with by the manufacturer. thank you for your time. *tr

I purchased a 2004 chevy trailblazer. everytime i fill the tank i have a strong order of gas. i took my vehicle to the dealership today and they told me that i have a leak in my gas tank and that i need a new gas tank. i searched and found that there are alot of complaints regarding this same issue with other trail blazer owners. i would like for gm to compensate or pay for the repairs that i had no idea about. i would not have purchased the vehicle if i knew that it had a complaint of this magnitude. this is a costly repair. even at the price of gas - i do not have money to waste purchasing it for it to just leak out my vehicle. i am also required to take the vehicle through emissions but can not until the service engine soon light goes off. it won't go off until the gas tank is fixed. my license iis in jeopardy because or state (illinois) requires that this is done within a certain time period. i have already received 1 ticket for this because my plates can not be renewed as well until the emissions has passed. *tr

Around 50k miles the service engine light came on. i took the vehicle to the dealership. i was asked if i had recently got gas, when i replied yes, he told me to tighten the gas cap and the light would go if in a few days. the light did go off but the mechanic never documented anything about my visit. several weeks later the service engine light came on again. thinking that it was the same situation i tightened the gas cap and did not go back to the dealership. this time the service engine light did not go off. i took the vehicle to an independent garage to get it checked out and the result was a malfunction in the fuel system. often times i smell gas vapors especially after fueling. recently i was parked on a hill and gas was dripping from my tank. local dealerships act as if they have never heard of the problem. my warranty has expired. *tr

Check engine light came on three times within the first month and a half i owned the used 04 trailblazer. it seems common from what most people posted on the internet that this problem occurs anywhere from 35 - 55k miles. the gas tank would constantly release an odor and i would get dizzy every time i drove the truck. i took it in to the dealer and they said it was just a leak in the gas cap and that it needed to be replaced. once the warranty expired (one week later), the s.e..light came on again and the dealer service department stated that there was a crack in the neck of the tank and that it needed to be replaced. i picked it up today after it was replaced and totaled to $1,430. gm knows about this problem and hopefully the letter that i have written to them will solve this issue and that i will either be reimbursed or compensated somehow for lost work and interest paid on this bill. *tr

I was just reading the complaints & thought i would submit a few of my own. gas fillling is always a task as tank always seems to overflow & gas sprays out everywhere. i was told it is because of the type of filler line that gm uses. headlights constantly going from normal to dim, to dimmer, then back to normal, regardless of driving conditions. saw the one from the person being shocked, this too has always happened to me since the first day i bought the trailblazer. if i touch the metal of the door upon exiting the vehicle theres a large jolt from static electricity i assume. the arc from this jolt is very visible & i estimate it to 2 inches in length at times (longer your in the vehilce...bigger the arc). all the rubber trim on the backhath has come off. plastic lining used on fenderwells constantly coming loose & must be reatached. carpet around pedals has all come loose. i bought this vehicle nov. 1 2004 & it is hardly been driven with only 6,000 miles yet seems to be falling apart already. *jb

I have a 2004 chevy trailblazer and from day one i've had problems with gas overflowing out of my vehicle when pumping gas in to it. i'm not trying to top off the tank, at the first click i stop pumping and gas overflows outside of the vehicle all over my car, my feet and legs and the ground. sometimes i don't even get the warning click that it's full. it doesn't do it all the time so when i've taken it to my dealership they say they can't duplicate the problem. i've met other trailblazer owners at the pump and they say they have the same problem. this doesn't seem safe or environmentally sound. i have had the vehicle for 4 years and have tried many different gas stations/pumps. *jb

When filling up with gas, it spews from the tank when gas nozzle is removed. it does not matter how much gas is in tank & happens even when tank is not being topped off. also when filling, you must constantly reposition the nozzle because of gas build up in tank line will inadvertently cause pump to turn off. this has happened on numerous occasions, however last night was the final straw, trailblazer had a quarter tank of gas, after pumping in less than a gallon, nozzle/pump started its clicking/auto shut off. i removed the nozzle to reposition it as usual & upon removal of nozzle gas sprayed (like spraying from a hose nozzle)from the tank as if under pressure. i was completely covered with gas from the waist down, i'm not talking about a light spray but soaked through my clothes to the skin with gas. based on the amount of gas left on the ground i estimate that 2 or 3 gallons sprayed from the tank, the only way it was stopped was by putting the cap on. although not seriously injured i am now covered in a rash from the gas from the waist down. *jb

2004 chevrolet trailblazer fuel filler inlet overflows upon tank fill-up. this condition occurs at fill-up when pump handle is set on automatic shut off, or when shut off occurs when manually filling. this condition is repeatable, and happens regardless of what gas station is used. this condition was reported to a local chevrolet dealer. their fix was to replace the inlet filler hose to the tank. this fix was unsuccessful and the condition still exists. currently attempting to schedule another service appointment.

The gas tank always overflowes when filled. it is hard to position the nozzle into the filler neck so that gas flows without holding the pump handle and repositioning several times during the filling process. the oveflow is not from trying to top off the tank either. it happens when the tank is not even full. i have had the vehicle into the dealership more than five times for this and for electrical/battery problems in less than one year. no correction has been made.*ak

Every time i fill up the gas tank (tried 10 different pumps at 10 different gas stations) the autoshut off on the gas pump does not work quick enough. gas overflows out of the tank and spills on the ground. something wrong with the design of the trailblazers fill up tube? i am not trying to top off the tank either.

I own a 2004 chevy trailblazer and the speedometer has progressively gotten to the point of being completely inoperable. the first time i noticed the speedometer read 120 mph when i was driving on the highway were the speed limit was 55 mph and i was driving with the flow of the traffic. i turned the car off and the speedometer still read 50mph. as of a month ago my fuel, oil, battery, and temp gauge are all inop; the needles never move. with this my battery, seatbelt, abs, and parking park stay illuminated. this is a safety concern because i never know how fast i'm going, how much fuel i have, if my car is running hot, i have no warning indication of anything going on with my vehicle.

2004 chevy trailblazer 4wd fuel gauge not accurate, going from f-e while driving after filling with gas. from online research this is the fuel sender problem that is a wide problem from all trailblazers.

My 2004 chevrolet trailblazer developed a leaking fuel tank and i keep getting service engine lights. i understand there have been many complaints however gm has not called for a recall. this is a serious safety hazard and appears to be a common problem. reference complaint #05012. *tr

Bought a 2004 chevy trailblazer and fuel gauge is not working on it. quit right after we bought it. we had also bought a 2000 chevy silverado in 2004 fuel gauge went out on it, it has the electronic sensor/sending unit built onto the fuel pump. fuel pump works great just the sensor is broke. what is with these on the chevrolets. i have heard of others with same issue on their chevrolets. *tr

I bought a chevy trailblazer in march of 2004, brand new. in november 2004 i smelled a strong odor of gas fumes and took it to the dealership for repairs, they fixed the gas odor, but it did occur to me that my trailblazer may have been causing the severe headaches i had been having since march of 2004. my headaches did decrease in frequency then cease after i quit driving the trailblazer. my husband then started driving the trailblazer. after some discussion about the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, he was tested and the lab results did confirm that he was toxic. my trailblazer now sits in the driveway and i keep making payments on a vehicle that poisoned me and my family. general motors has been notified and they do not care. please, please help me with this situation.

Daily failure of seedometer on my 2004 chevrolet trailblazer. this was in addition to failure of the fuel gauge. the speedometer problem was inconsistent and made me question the actual speed at every moment and made me measure based on other traffic. it is a very distracting way to drive with all gauges moving at times and then returning to a fixed setting. i had the clusterboard replaced by the dealer who claimed this was not a common problem. instrument panels on 3 year old cars do not fail unless there is a manufacturing problem. please prevent accidents in the future this is not a safe way to operate a vehicle. *tr
