Letter from senator mccain on behalf of constituent who has encountered a problem with her 2005 gm trailblazer instrument panels (dot/i#2010-1286) *tgw the consumer was informed it would cost between $500-600 to have the faulty instrument panel replaced. *jb

I own a 2005 chevy trailblazer with 76,000 miles on it. the gas gauge and speedometer started messing up about a year ago. it stopped working and started back on its own. well now a year later the gas gauge does not work and the speedometer works when it wants. after further study into the problem my mechanic says its the instrument cluster. so i go online to try and find one and instead i find that its an ongoing problem with thousands of trailblazer owners. i call gm to see what can be done and was told since out of warranty to bad. i think that with as many complaints that i have read and know about this is a matter that gm should resolve. they recalled the same cluster that was put in the higher priced vehicles but will do nothing to help us out. please check into this since this is my wife and kids car. i don't feel safe with them riding around without knowing how fast they are going or how much gas they have.  Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer ls. while driving approximately 60 mph, the contact stated that the speedometer registered a speed of 120 mph; although she was driving 60 mph. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer (as advised by the manufacturer) where the contact was informed that the instrument cluster was defective. the manufacturer refused to assist with the repair expenses. the vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. the failure mileage was approximately 77,000. the current mileage was 79,369.

I just bought a 2005 chevy trailblazer ls. speedometer is going haywire. needle points straight down and slowly ticks backwards. when im stopped it normally shows im going 60 mph and when driving it goes into the 100's and then way passed the 120 mph mark. also my oil pressure gauge needle is way passed full and is almost facing straight down. apparently there's been a ton of people with this exact problem and it should be a recall but apparently gm won't do anything about it. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy trailblazer with 50,000 miles. starting a couple months ago the speedometer regularly malfunctions and gives me the wrong speed. gm refuses to correct the problem and tells me i have to spend $125 to diagnose the problem and possibly over $500 to ultimately fix the problem the problem has happened to many 2005 chevy trailblazer owners and nothing has been done. *tr

The speedometer on my 2005 chevy trailblazer malfunctioned saying i was going faster than i really was. this has happened 3 times; the first time on january 28th 2010, and twice on the night of february 4th 2010. it appears to be getting worse each time. the speedometer will increase during acceleration and not move for deceleration. with each deceleration and subsequent acceleration the speedometer continues to increase until you hit max speed of 120 mph. this is a large danger for frequent freeway/highway traveling considering the vehicles approaching from the rear and i have no way of knowing how fast my vehicle is really going. the only way that i have found to reset the speedometer, is to stop and shut off the vehicle, then restart the vehicle. however, this must be done multiple times, sometimes up to 10 times or more. each time the vehicle is shut off and restarted, the speedometer will reset approximately 5 mph. this evening i had to restart my truck 12 times to get it back to zero. the first time this happened, a friend was driving for me, and this malfunction has resulted in a speeding ticket. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy trailblazer. on highway 61 near troy, mo, there is a speed radar set along the road to display vehicle speed to drivers. on 2 occasions, my speedometer showed speeds of 60 mph when the radar display showed 40 to 45 mph and on 3 occasions, my speedometer indicated speeds of 60 (the speed limit), while the radar displayed speeds anywhere from 75 to 85 mph. i was going 15 to 25 mph faster than the speed limit, but did not know it according to my speedometer. this does not happen all the time, but has occurred at least 6 or 7 times over the past year at different locations. i have found that when i stop the trailblazer, when the speedometer is registering low, the speedometer needle will actually move below the 0 mph. on those occasions when my speedometer was registering high, when i have stopped the vehicle, the needle will still be showing 25 to 40 mph! my fear is that on one of those occasions that my speed is actually faster than indicated, my speed my cause an accident. i have found that after stopping the car and turning it off, if i just turn the ignition key to run without starting it several times, the needle will gradually reset itself back to 0 and i won't have any more problems for a while. i have had an estimate to replace the instrument cluster for $500 to $600, but i feel this is a recall problem that chevrolet needs to take care of. i have read numerous complaints from other trailblazer owners on the internet, this is what moved me to file this complaint. *tr

The speedometer malfunction began on january 11, 2010. first the speedometer appeared to be stuck at zero. now it has gone up and past the highest mph reading on the 2005 trailblazer. there has been a recall on the other chevy trucks with the same speedometer but has not included the trailblazer. how can one safely drive when you don't have an accurate reading on how fast the vehicle is traveling? *tr

I own a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer, have own it since i bought it in 2005 and have no problems up until recently. today i was driving down the highway when my speedometer quit working. i would not show the correct speed in which i was traveling on the highway for the posted speed limit, realizing that everyone else on the road seem like they were parked on the highway, as i am flying by them is when i realized that my speedometer/instrument panel. this problem happened on my travel to a location and back on a couple of occasions. i managed to figure out that the longer i had the vehicle running the problem would occur. if i shut the vehicle off and let it cool down it would be fine for about 15-20 mins than act up again. this is something that is unsafe and can potentially cause harm in the near future if it is not addressed with other owners. luckily i did not cause any accidents or pulled over. *tr

Speedometer gauge does not work properly. when you drive it never displays the correct speed you are going and can read many different speeds as you drive. it can also remain at 0. this is happening on many chevrolet models and can cause you to get multiple tickets for not going the correct speed limit. this should not be left to the consumer to repair for $700 as this a gm/chevrolet problem. look on several websites and put in a chevy model and you will see that this is an ongoing problem and should be recalled. *tr

Trailblazer 2005 speedometer sometimes works perfectly, then it will suddenly just sit below zero and stay there until it decides to move again. occasionally, will hover around 10-20 mph, no matter what speed being driven. seems like a consistent complaint. local chevy dealer quoted around $650 to repair. *tr

My speedometer is acting bizarre, it just goes round and round, started abut 2 months ago. i understand that the 2003 & 2004 were recalled for the chevy trailblazer. now within the last week, my gas gage has gone crazy not showing accurately, first on empty light on low fuel, then while i'm driving light will go off and it registers to show full take when actually i may have 1/2 tank. i took to repair shop each item is over 300.00 for repair. he suggested to look into see if the censor was recalled for the gas, and that 03 & 04 was recalled for the speedometer and if 05's were being recalled. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy trailblazer vin#, i am having problem with the speedometer sticking, not working, showing 120 mph when i am completely stopped. i contacted my gm dealer & was told that gm was not covering the 2005 trail blazer, but was covering 2003, 2004 gm tahoe, silverado & other trucks with the same problem & the same instrument cluster panel. i contacted gm customer service for a resolution on 3-11-09 i talked with joe sanders. on 3-12 a district specialist's contacted me & assigned a service request number 71-708713901. on 3-23-09 i talked with jenvive & she indicated my case had been reviewed & denied repair because gm was not covering this issue in this model. she said to pay for the repair & hold onto receipts that gm my cover the costs in the future. i asked for her supervisor & talked with erin mata & she denied my request for gm to repair the vehicle because they were covering the same part problem in earlier models, but not in the 2005 trail blazer. my complaint is that gm should cover the issue in later models, when the problem is with the same instrument cluster panels. any help you can provide would be appreciated. *tr

My speedometer isn't working properly and i can be going approximately 60 miles per hour on the highway and the gauge shows that i am going 25/30 miles an hour and i researched this on the internet and it shows other complaints relating to the same problem...why hasn't gm recalled this problem on the 2005 models? *tr
09/30/2008650001
After i have been driving for 20-30 minutes my speedometer stops functioning. in city driving situations, the speedometer needle drops to zero and stays there for the entire trip. in highway driving situations when the cruise control is in use, the speedometer sticks. when i touch the breaks or the gas to speed up/slow down the speedometer needle stays at whatever speed i was previously driving and stays there for the rest of the trip. once the car has been parked and turned off for approximately an hour, the speedometer can be reset by starting the car and turning it off until the needle returns to zero. this problem started when my trailblazer had approximately 55,000 miles and has persisted since. the dealership told me that this problem isn't covered under the warranty and i would be responsible for the $450-550 cost to replace the instrument cluster. they also said that this is a prevalent problem with 2005 trailblazers but it won't be covered under a silent warranty unless more complaints are filed. this is a serious and potentially dangerous problem that can cause serious accidents and deaths, and i believe chevy should be responsible for ensuring their vehicles are safe for their customers to drive. *tr

I recently bought a 2005 chevrolet trailblazer and suddenly the speedometer began sticking, and not working, then working again. unfortunately when it does work, it does not tell you the correct speed that you are traveling at. this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed to general motors. it continuously works then stop, and displays inaccurate speeds. looking at the complaints on this website there are numerous people having the same problem. *tr

08/29/2008334501
Speedometer on my trailblazer showed a wildly inaccurate speed reading. this reading was very low and could have resulted in a speeding/ safety situation. the speedometer could give a false reading allowing the driver to enter a curve or city at an unsafe speed. at a stoplight the needle pointed straight down instead of zero. i contacted gm who informed me that there are not enough complaints on this specific model to warrant a recall. as i understand it the components causing the failure in the models being recalled are the same as those in trailblazers. my vehicle also has the dimming/flickering lights at night. gm has a technical bulletin out that says this is normal. there has to be a reason for these issues. i don't call losing lights at night normal. nor do i have confidence that the lights will not fail completely. *tr

My speedometer on my 2005 trailblazer only works sporadically. this has been happening for about a year now. sometimes it sticks at 0 even when the vehicle is in motion, sometimes it shows that i am going faster than what i am (i.e. showing 110 when my gps unit showed 70), and most of the time it shows i am going slower than i am, by at least 5-10 mph. i was researching the problem when i discovered that a large number of gm vehicles have this problem, but that gm has only issued recalls on a couple of specific vehicles. i contacted gm and they told me to go get a diagnostic run at my local chevy dealership, and that they could probably fix it for me even though my vehicle was no longer under warranty. i went and had the diagnostic done, and gm called me back and told me that the problem was indeed the instrument cluster, but due to the age and mileage of my vehicle, they would not fix it. they did admit that several of their vehicles had service bulletins on this exact problem, but that the 2005 trailblazer was not one of them. *tr

I have a 2005 chevy trailblazer, on 1-20-08 the speedometer failed, it stuck on 80 + mph ( when it should be at zero ) and would only go higher in motion. on 1-23-08 my wife took vehicle to phillips chevy in frankfort, ill. we are told that in instrument cluster is the problem and needs to be replaced, we are not covered under new car warranty because we have exceeded the mileage. i checked with chevy to see if there was a recall in force and there is not. it seems that there are numerous other gm and chevy owners for various years that have same problem and there is a law suit in washington and oregon that are seeking class-action status. i feel that this has been an ongoing problem with gm and chevy and that they should issue a recall to repair or replace as needed. *tr

Speedometer gives an inaccurate reading or sometimes stops working altogether. this problem began 2-3 weeks ago and from other trailblazer owners that i have discussed this with online it is a very common problem. i didn't realize that the speedometer was functioning improperly until it became very obvious - it was registering 30 mph when i was traveling with the flow of traffic on an interstate freeway. when the vehicle has been turned off and sits for a while, the speedometer seems to reset itself and works properly again for a while, then the problem begins again. from what my research indicates, it is a bad stepper motor that causes the problem, which requires specialized tools and expertise to replace. the cost is in the hundreds of dollars. given that this is such a common problem and compromises the safety of the vehicle, i strongly feel that this issue should be addressed by nhtsa. thank you.*cn
