Defect SummaryCertain vehicles originally built with cloth seats that were equipped with an automatic air bag passenger sensing system and later reupholstered with aftermarket leather seat cover kits are involved. testing has indicated that the aftermarket leather seat covers can cause the passenger sensing system to malfunction.
Consequence SummaryIf the passenger sensing system malfunctions, the front air bag on the passenger side may be disabled when it should be enabled, or enabled when it should be disabled. in either case, in the event of a crash that requires air bag deployment, a front passenger's level of injury may be increased.
Corrective SummaryBecause a replacement leather seat cover that is compatible with the passenger sensing system is not available, general motors (gm) will repurchase these vehicles in accordance with the terms stated in gm's letter to owners. the recall began on november 6, 2006. owners should contact gm at 1-877-477-1022 to begin the process of repurchasing their vehicle.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving 35 mph, the brake pedal was resistant when it was depressed. the vehicle would not stop and the contact rear ended another vehicle. the road conditions were dry and there were no warning indicator lights prior to the failure. the air bags failed to deploy. a police report was filed. the front bumper was damaged and the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the brake failure. the manufacturer stated that the speed was not fast enough to make the air bags deploy. the driver was wearing her seat belt, but she reinjured her back and experiences numbness in her legs. while driving between 30-60 mph, the engine would stall and the check engine warning light flashed. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to the dealer. the dealer stated that the failure was caused by a failed seal that caused water and orange sludge to build up in the engine. the engine was cleaned and the failed seal was replaced. the frame around the license plate was leaking tar. the dealer informed her that the tar was coming from the tailgate. she applied tar remover to the tailgate and license frame and no longer experienced the failure. the failure mileage was 12,000 and current mileage was 14,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet trailblazer. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle would vibrate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on numerous occasions, but they could not produce any error codes or provide a sufficient remedy. in addition, the air bag warning indicator would sporadically illuminate on the instrument panel, which signified that the air bag was inoperative. if the passenger sensing system were to malfunction, the front air bag on the passenger side could be disabled when it should be enabled or vice versa. the risk of injury in the event of a crash was increased. the contact had aftermarket leather seats installed in her vehicle and called the manufacturer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number 06v417000 (air bags:frontal). she is currently awaiting their response. the failure mileage was 10,397 and current mileage was 29,439.

This vehicle was just listed in the top ten worst vehicles to drive regarding safety crash rating reports. i have only owned it for 6 months, and im was afraid to drive it with my family and myself. i think chevrolet should take full responsibility for these vehicles and accept them back if their own product wasc extremly unsafe!*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet trailblazer. since the vehicle was purchased, it has experienced several failures. while driving 25 mph, the power steering pump would produce an awful noise on many occasions. the air bag light would illuminate at inappropriate times and fail to indicate when someone with a low weight was seated in the passenger seat. a mechanic stated that water was entering into the engine because of a shortage. the contact asked general motors for an extended warranty, but they refused. the purchase date was unknown. the failure mileage was 6,000 and current mileage was 41,000.

I was operating my 2006 chevy trailblazer when i slide on slippery pavement due to freezing rain. my vehicle began turning sideways then straightened out and bumped the left side curb parallel with my tires. only the left side tires struck a 4 curb. both right and left side curtain air bags deployed. the left one hit me in the side of the face and left shoulder. the impact with the curb could not have been at more than 10 mph. there is no damage done to my vehicle, the step bars, mud flaps and/or even a scuff mark on either of my tires. no one else was in the vehicle with me. thank goodness my 1 yr old and 8 yr old daughters were not. this air bag deployment would have caused injuries to my daughters not a bump to a 4 curb. i have been driving for over 17 years and have only have one accident. i drive for a living and now i am terrified to take my girls in my vehicle. my car is not fixed and i have requested gm to do an inspection on the vehicle. time will tell but i believe in safety but not in the name of failure. *tr
