DP10001GENERAL MOTORS CORP.01/07/2010ALLEGED FUEL TANK LEVEL SENSOR FAILURE

The office of defects investigations (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by general motors (gm) as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers.in total, there were 5,089 unique reports indicating an inaccurate fuel level reading while driving.general motors stated that this condition occurs when the contacts of the fuel sensor wear prematurely.most of the complaints indicated an empty fuel gauge reading after filling the tank.less than 10 percent of theodi complaints involved an engine stall incident.during this investigation, gm developed a remedy procedure and issued special coverage bulletin instructing dealers to install a new design fuel level sensor.the bulletin was sent to dealers on august 10, 2011 and the owner letter mailing began on august 15, 2011.see the investigative file for copies of gm's bulletin and owner letter.this preliminary evaluation is closed.

The office of defects investigation has received 668 complaints alleging inaccurate fuel gauge reading while driving in model year 2005-07 chevrolet trailblazer, gmc envoy, buick rainier, and saab 9-7x vehicles.of the 668 complaints, 58 incidents were alleged to result in a vehicle stall.of the 58 stalling incidents, 43 complaints reported stalling because the fuel level reading indicated more fuel availability than what is actually in the fuel tank. one complaint alleged a vehicle crash after the vehicle stalled while exiting the interstate, became disabled, and was struck from behind.summarily, the complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with most complaints received within the past year.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.

Fuel guage defect; reads empty when the vehicle has gas in it. also reads a higher level of gas than what is actually in it. every morning when starting the vehcile the fuel guauge light comes on even when the vehicle has gas. i never know how much gas is in the vehicle, i am worried it will shut off when driving down the road. this began at 80000 miles, and has been constant ever since.

The first problem i had with my 2005 trailblazer was right after i purchased it. there was a problem when you tried to pump gas it would keep kicking the pump off. i took it to the dealership from which i had bought it. they worked on it said it was fixed, but it would do it at certain pumps. then i had a problem with he passenger seat's sidepiece popped off and they fixed that but now the driver's side has done the same along with the lumbar support quit working.then the speedometer went crazy, it was all over the place and made a real bad noise. the dealership quoted off it would be over $400.00 to fix it. then the gas gauge popped up the dummy light as we call it when gas is getting low. the gauge quit registering the amount of gas in the tank. then during the heat of summer the front fan quit working, the air conditioner worked and the other fans worked. i got a letter about the gas sensor and how i would have to pay half of it. that is a lot of money not counting the collision insurance and taxes and other expenses i have paid. they should be glad to help the working people who have always bought chevrolets. i will say this if they do not uphold some kind of quality on this high end automobile the next car i buy will not be an american because they won't stand by their products. it is just inappropriate that there have been a lot of the same complaints as i have about my car. i called the number on the paper that came out about the gas sensor and spoke with a nice lady named quin or queen, she set it up for me to bring my car in for diagnostic check. i should know what all is damaged and in need of repair and how much will come out of my pocket.

Recently, the gas gauge in my vehicle has stopped working correctly. it no longer accurately reports how much fuel i have. in researching the issue, i have discovered that this is a very common problem with this type of vehicle (2005 chevrolet trailblazer). although nothing has happened to me personally, i have read of instances where the car ran out of gas while on the highway because the driver assumed that gas gauge was working correctly. this is a potential safety issue. with it occurring so frequently, there are obviously defective parts being used. it seems to occur most often in 2005 - 2006 vehicles based on the gmt360/370 platform (chev. trailblazer, gmc envoy, etc). if needed, i can provide a link to several sites where people are reporting this problem. or, a quick search on google.com for 2005 trailblazer gas gauge problems will provide a list. *tr
