Defect SummaryOn certain minivans, the outboard release handle on the impact-side second-row bucket seat may be actuated and the rear latches may unlatch early in a side impact crash. this was discovered in a side impact test run by gm, under conditions similar to nhtsa's new car assessment program (ncap) side impact test.
Consequence SummaryIf the rear latches of the seat release early in a severe side impact, the front outboard latch may disengage and increase the potential for injury to the occupant of the seat.
Corrective SummaryDealers will remove the seat latch release handle and install a black plastic cap over the exposed metal stud to eliminate the side impact safety concern free of charge. the recall began on april 5, 2005. owners may contact saturn at 1-800-972-8876, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, and pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

Tl* - the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet uplander. the transmission failed at 11,000 miles. the mechanic repaired it instead of replacing, it and it continued to leak. the dealer replaced the transmission, and the new one from the manufacturer was also leaking. the vehicle was in the repair shop for 16 days, and the new transmission had to be resealed. when starting the vehicle the ignition was sticking in the start mode for 2 minutes after releasing the key. the passenger automatic sliding door did not latch shut, no warning indicator light appeared nor did it register with onstar as the door was being un latched. when attempting to open the door it will not open because the latch did not engage. the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. the contact was concerned about the safety risk involved. the contact filed a complaint with the bbb, and spoken to gm about all of the failures. the gear shiftws very difficult to move from park to reverse. all of the above listed failures occurred frequently. the most recent was the door and the starter. the starter failure occurred 15 to 20 times. the gear shift failed every time the vehicle was driven. the door failed 20 times. the current and failure mileage was 13,000. *ak the engine would crank, but it wouldn't start, the drivers heated seat was inoperative, there was an oil leak from the crankshaft seal, the power sliding door was inoperative. updated 03/30/07. *jb

Dt: the contact stated the strap on the second row seat will not allow the seat to move forward. the concern was that the seat will not move forward to allow children /younger occupants to get out of the vehicle. while she was outside of the vehicle she could access the strap, but it will not move the seat forward from this position. the manufacturer stated this was the design feature of the seat. *ak

Dt: the consumer purchased a new van 2005 and discovered there were no arm rests on the second row seats, and consumer thought this was unsafe. also when sitting in the back third row seat the ride was uncomfortable, and when hitting a bump in the road it hurt the passenger's back. has been to a dealer, and the dealer noted this vehicle did not come with an arm rest, but consumer could pay out of pocket to get van customized. consumer did want to do this because he felt it was not his responsibility. consumer contacted chevrolet, and they told consumer to talk to dealer to trade and pay the difference for a model that did have arm rests. consumer did not wish to do that, and no changes have been made to vehicle. *ak the consumer was making a turn and fell over when the injury occurred. *sc

I am entering this concern on behalf of my family members that were injured with one fatality in a single vehicle incident. the vehicle incident ocurred on i65 southbound between montgomery, alabama and mobile, alabama on may 17, 2005. my aunt (c. horton) died as a result of injuries. my mother (e. jack) remains in critical condition at the univ. of south alabama medical center in mobile, al. my cousin (h. horton) has neck injuries and has been released. my father (a. jack, sr) and nephews (r. jack and a. jack) suffered minor injuries. my father was driving the vehicle. e. jack and c. horton were riding in the 2nd row seats in an avis rental 2005my chevy uplander. according to my sister (dr. a. jack) and her conversations with the icu surgeons, both e. jack and c. horton suffered intestinal damage and injuries were similar. according to my father's recollection, my mother was sitting on the 2nd row -driver's side and my aunt was seated on the 2nd row - passenger side. based on photos of the vehicle , the passenger- side resembles a side-impact damage. my father recalls a roll-over event. he did not recall making a major turn in the steering wheel. per recall nhtsa id#05v061000 and gm recall#05015, it states that the 2nd row seat can become detached as a result of side - impact. the recall began in 04/05/2005. according to gm records, the vehicle vin#1gndv23l85d268189 was not included in the recall. my conversation with the tow company leads me to suspect 2nd row seat performance in the incident. i have the following questions and suspicions: (1) 2nd row seats temporarily or permanently detached (2) the body frame support allowed for the 2nd row seats to detach (3) the 2nd row seat back support may have failed (4) the 2nd row seat belts may have faltered. (5) vehicle chassis design allowed a greater chance for tip over. avis denied my request to view the vehicle. now, i am more concerned.
