Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger, sport utility vehicles and minivans. the passenger air bag inflator modules were built without the correct amount of generant, which produces the gas that fills the air bag. some were built with a double load of generant and some were built without generant.
Consequence SummaryIn the event of a crash that would trigger a passenger air bag deployment, a double load of generant can cause the inflator module to explode. if the air bag module explodes, metal and plastic debris could cause severe injury to vehicle occupant. a module with no generant would not inflate the air bag, and the occupants could receive more severe injuries.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the passenger air bag module. telephone calls were made to owners on january 29, 2001. follow up owner mailing began on april 17, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, or saturn at 1-800-553-6000.
NotesAlso contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Defect SummaryOn certain passenger, sport utility vehicles and mini vans, some of these vehicles have a passenger air bag that was manufactured without a check valve pin. an air bag without the check valve pin could produce increased pressure at the onset of the air bag deployment and reduced pressure afterward.
Consequence SummaryThis could increase the severity of injury to a person who was not properly restrained and who was close to the passenger air bag at the time of deployment. it could also reduce the ab8ility of the air bag to protect a restrained front seat passenger.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the passenger air bag. owner notification began december 16, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or saturn at 1-800-553-6000, prompt #3.

I have a 2001 venture with an airbag light that occasionally comes on. dealer says that it is a faulty sensor in the seat belt. dealer and gm customer service both claim no responsibility for a defective srs on a vehicle with less than 48,000 miles. i contend that the safety restraint system should last the life of the vehicle if it is not damaged due to wear or abuse. i contend that gm is liable if my srs fails.

Had intermitant airbag light, repaired by dealer under warranty. dealer fixed drivers side seat belt retractor. then had 40 mph front end crash, front and side airbags failed to deploy. sdm has history of failure on this van. contacted gm, they stated 'no issue - case closed'. needs to be addressed. i am an automotive engineer, all conditions should have been met in this crash for airbag deployment.

I was in a accident going between 30 to 32 mph and hit a car with the front of the van. the other car was struck on the driver side of the car. neither of the air bags in my venture van went off. the front bumper, headlight assembly, grill and hold were all damaged. the fire department and police department wanted to make sure that i make a complaint with you because they stated that both air bags should have went off. as far as i know there is no switch to turn either air bag off.
