Crack on the dash at the passenger air bag area

Dash on my 1999 chrysler 300m has a crack on the passenger side where the airbag is located. we bought the car new and have kept it in our garage. the crack is not new it has been there for years. my uncle had the exact same crack in his 1999 300m as well. i've learned via the internet that this is a very common problem. i feel it could be a safety hazard since it exists right over the air bag. *tr

Soon after warranty on my 1999 300m expired a crack developed on driver side of vehicle. i complained to the dealer and nothing was done. no repair shop would attempt to fix it because they would not want to be responsible for airbag. months later a split developed on passenger side near airbag. i am very concerned that the airbag may or may not deploy. i now have a 12 inch split on driver side and a 8 inch split over the passenger airbag. it is unsightly and unsafe and effects the resale of the vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 chrysler 300m. therewas a crack in the dashboard on the passenger's side of the vehicle, near the air bag. the failure mileage was 100,000. the contact took the vehicle to three dealers, and no one would repair the vehicle due to liability issues involved with the crack being so close to the air bag. the dealers diagnosis was to replace the dashboard. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle's dashboard had developed a small crack to the right of the front passenger side air bag. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that nothing could be done to repair the cracked dashboard unless the entire dashboard was replaced. the crack grew larger with time and went from top to bottom. the contact believed this to be a safety defect because it could obstruct the passenger side air bag. updated 7/18/2006 - *nm

It is seemingly impossible to align a 1999 chrysler 300m, and this has been quite an alarming recent experience for me, having just bought a used one and having changed a lot of front-end suspension parts before aligning and re-aligning. i feel so horrible for the people who bought and continue to buy these 300 cars today. in comparison to my other cars, (a 1993 pontiac firebird and even an older chrysler product, a 1986 daytona) which can be easily aligned if all the right parts are in and work well, the 300m simply cannot be aligned it seems, no matter what parts are changed. what a shame for america manufacturing! shame!*jb

My 1999 chrysler 300m has developed 2 cracks on the right side of the dashboard, on either side of the passenger side air bag. i researched this online and it is a very common problem. the cracks form only on the passenger side and always on either side of the air bag. i tried to get the cracks repaired, but no one is willing to do the work due to the proximity of the air bag. i believe this is much more of a safety issue than simply a cosmetic one due to the following reasons: the air bag is designed to deploy with a given amount of force. in my car, the amount of force necessary to break through the dashboard material is factored into the force of airbag deployment. the dash is already cracked, the air bags may (note, i did not say will--i'm not a chrysler engineer) deploy too forcefully, thereby causing greater injuries to a passenger-side occupant. it's also possible that the dash won't break away properly, causing an excessive amount of dashboard foam or other material to be projected toward the face and body of the passenger-side occupant and causing lacerations and/or eye injuries that might not otherwise be encountered in a medium-speed front-end collision. and it's also possible that if the dashboard is compromised, it may interfere with air bag deployment altogether. please note my complaint and take any action that your office may feel is necesary to correct this problem. thank you in advance for your time. please see this link for others who are havign the exact problem that i am having. http://300mclub.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3903&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=garage+door. *nm

Dt: the vehicle has a split in dashboard around the passenger airbag. the dashboard has been replaced in 2002 for the same reason. the dealer replaced it free of charge the first time. this replacement was as result of a conversation the vehicle owner had with the manufacturer in detroit. the manufacturer or dealer will not replace it this time. the owner feels this could result in a premature deployment of the airbag. the split appeared six weeks ago, and continued to grow. *ak *jb

I recently noticed a crack in the dashboard of my 1999 chrysler 300m over the passenger airbag. the crack is about two inches long and getting bigger. there is also an oily substance surrounding the crack. i feel that this is a safety concern and may compromise proper deployment of the airbag resulting in bodily harm or possible death in the event of an accident. i am concerned that if i were to repair the crack it would it would further compromise the deployment of the airbag. having researched this online it appears that many of the other identical models have the same problem.*ak

After parking my car in my heated garage for most of the winter in sw pa, i got into it in the spring and noticed a small crack in the dashboard on the passenger side where the airbag is. since then, that small crack has grown to about 8 and another one appeared on the right side that is now about 4. i am afraid my airbag will accidentally deploy on even a small bump in the road. my car currently has about 53k on it.*ak i will soon be contacting my local chrysler dealer to complain! any hints you can provide on handling this will be appreciated!

Consumer stated leather on the dashboard split where the airbags located, the splits were on both sides of the air bag section. consumer took vehicle to the dealer, and was told that the warranty on the vehicle did not cover the leather splitting on the dashboard. then, consumer called the manufacturer, and they said the same thing.*ak *tc

The dashboard had developed a cut or tear, where the passenger side air bag is installed. this could result in premature deployment of the passenger side air bag. the dealership indicated that the tear is a cosmetic issue and it is not covered under warranty. the tear cannot be repaired because it's a safety hazard, so the entire dashboard needs to be replaced. consumer heard from other service dealers that the tear was due to the thinning of the dashboard to make the deployment of the air bag easier. *la

My passenger vehicle has a crack developing in the dash on the left side of the passenger air bag. this crack is about 5-6 inches long and appears to be growing. it is in line with what appears to be a slight depression where the air bag is located. this cannot be repaired by any cosmetic means due to the possibility of rendering the air bag ineffective. the dealer says it is not covered by any warranty or service recall. they will replace it for a mere #1100.00 plus. i don't understand why the safety devices are required to be installed in the cars when they are new but they are not covered by any warranty standard that requires the devices to be functional beyond the day you purchase the vehicle? for me as a customer this neither protects me by assuring my personal safety nor does it protect me financially. this is a rip off. could any independent manufacturer survive building these devices and selling them under conditions that they will most likely to fail before you need them and cost a bundle to repair and that includes no warranty. *la

I own a 1999 chrysler 300m and i noticed that the dashboard has a crack along the left side of the passenger air bag. i went to a vinyl shop to get it repaired and they told me they would not be able to repair it because it could affect the airbag deployment. my only option is to get the dashboard replaced which my dealer told me would cost $1000. the dealer told me that having the crack there could also affect the airbag deployment. i am not the first person to complain about the dashboard cracking in this area on this car. this repair should be covered by chrysler, as it's their shoddy vinyl. it should be noted that this problem doesn't seem to be occurring in newer models and therefore i would assume chrysler has found a fix. *jb

I have a 1999 chrysler 300m. on the passenger side of the dash board, a crack exists on the whole left line of the airbag. now, another crack is forming on the right side of the airbag line. i know of another 300m that has the same problem. i am complaining because chrysler refuses to fix this obvious defect because my car is past the factory warranty (53,000 miles). even that being the case, i feel chrysler should be responsible for fixing this problem. i am concerned if this could affect the way the airbag will perform, or cause it to deploy when it is not intended to. i would appreciate your help and inquiries on this subject. *nlm

There were problems with electric windows and a crack in the dash. the electric windows had stuck shut due to the tight seal designed to reduce the wind noise, and the crack in the dash was around the passenger side air bag and appeared where the material was stretched over the air bag underneath. also, when the vehicle was two months old, the front wheel rotors had to be replaced, the battery was replaced in the first year, before 50k a defective bearing on the cooling fan was required to be replaced. *mr *scc *nlm
