Defect SummaryThe abs hydraulic control unit can experience excessive brake actuator piston seal wear causing pump-motor deterioration.
Consequence SummaryIf this condition occurs, the abs function could be lost and reduced power assist would be experienced during vehicle braking increasing the potential for a vehicle accident.
Corrective SummaryDealers will test the vehicle's anti-lock brake system and repair the vehicles if necessary. also the warranty on all abs components will be extended to 10 years or 100,000 miles (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage). owners will also be reimbursed for previous abs component repair costs.

Defect SummaryThe anti-lock brake system high pressure hose may leak or detach at its crimped end fitting resulting in the discharge of hydraulic fluid.
Consequence SummaryFluid discharge eventually causes the loss of both theanti-lock brake system and hydraulic assist for the brake system, resulting inincreased likelihood of brake lockup and increased stopping distances, whichcould result in a vehicle accident.
Corrective SummaryReplace the abs high pressure hose with a hose of different design and construction.

The abs control unit failed causing loss of hydraulic brake pressure. i was told by a local mechanic that the part installed on my vehicle had been recalled by chrysler, and that chrysler was to fix the vehicle at their expense. however, i've been told by chrysler my vin isn't included in the recall. looking online i've found hundreds of similar complaints on many websites of people with the same problem, some of which resulted in accidents, many paid for repairs out of pocket. my complaint is that this part is known to fail to an extent it has been recalled, but they have managed to avoid replacing a huge percentage of failed parts on cars be excluding vins from the recall. my car, and hundreds just like it have a part that is known to fail and cause injury, or worse, and they have found some loophole that allows them to put hundreds of people at risk, or cost them out of pocket for their mistake. here is one of the websites that makes the point: http://arfc.org/complaints/1990/chrysler/imperial/service_brakes_hydraulic/problem.aspx

I am the original owner of a 1990 chrysler imperial. in january 2010, my daughter was driving it when she said the brakes totally failed. she was traveling about 30 mph and when she pressed on the brake pedal, the car barely slowed down even with maximum force being applied. traffic was light and she was able to stop the car without incident. i actually drove it to the dealer taking extreme care to maintain ?a lot? of space between me and vehicles in front. the dealer confirmed that the anti lock brake pump had failed. however they also confirmed that my car?s vin was not included in the 1990 imperial anti lock brake recall that i found listed on the internet. they indicated that the cost to repair this failure would be ~$4,000. the good news is they did not charge me their normal $79 diagnostic charge because they were embarrassed about the cost of this repair for a failure that is identical to that covered by a recall that resulted in a lifetime warranty for the anti lock brake pump assembly on the imperials that were covered. i am a loyal mopar man beginning with my 1966 sport fury, driving dodge cars and trucks since and currently have a 2006 chrysler 300c. i am surprised and saddened with the stance of chrysler and this issue with my imperial. this car is still a dream to drive and ride in. it just doesn't stop now! *tr

I have had problems with the abs system, power assisted brake system and the suspension for over a year. about a year ago the abs light came on and stayed on. at this point my power assisted brake system was working fine. then about a month later the brake light also came on and stayed and i had very tight braking as well as the air ride suspension system has failed and my car now sits pretty much on the tires. these problems were covered in recall #s (91v191000 & 96v099000) however my vin was not covered. i filed a complaint with the nhtsa on 9-15-06 and asked that my vin # be added to the recalls but received no assistance. {odi id #10169824 & 10029413}.. i waited and waited but no response. since then, i moved to a house about 15 miles away on 1-16-2007 and had to move the car as well. while doing so, i came to a light and the little, tough braking system i had turned to no braking system and i kept going into the traffic at 35 mph and was hit by oncoming traffic. the impact jerked me around and caused some bodily harm. i feel that if this would have been taken seriously the first time i reported it, the accident wouldn't have happened. i am furious and would like my vin added seeing as how this is the exact problem as the vehicles in the recall. *jb

 1. while driving down the steep tolgate hiway in eastern oregon, 2. the brakes on the vehicle (1990 chrysler, imperial) failed. my wife was driving and her two sisters were riding in the vehicle with her. the car was finally brought to a stop without crashing into another vehicle or off the roadway. 3. the vehicle was taken to frontier motors inc. in lagrand, oregon. at frontier motors they received a fax about the nhtsa recall bulletin stating that this 1990 chriysler imperial has abs failures and should be replaced with a lifetime coverage. when i called them on the phone they told me they were so busy that it would take about a week to get parts and another week to fix the brakes. i then had the vehicle taken to yakima, washington in central washington where we live. hahn motors in yakima washington looked at the vehicle and said that because it had a bosch system for the abs and the master cylinder that it wasn't under a recall and that there weren't any parts to replace this vehicle with nor did anyone rebuild the braking system. the only thing that could be done was to take it to the wrecking yard and junk it out. the reason i am filing this complaint is that i don't see any thing on the recall bulletin, campaign no.: 96v099000 that says anything about a bosh not being under the recall or life time coverage. please look into the matter for me. vin lc3xy56rlld773703

This vehicle suffered a sudden abs brake failure with my wife driving on the freeway. she had to cross four lanes of traffic and exit down an off-ramp without appreciable brakes, and was able to coast into a parking lot. the dealer diagnosed the problem as the abs pump-motor. nhtsa has issued a recall for this problem for this car, but the manufacturer says it does not apply to my car, only to ones with a different brand of brake system. that is absurd! this is a life-threatening defect. it is the result of defective parts. it is the identical failure to which the recall applies. but chrysler says they will not fix the problem under the lifetime recall notice because the recall did not specifically cover this brand of abs system. what does it matter? the problem is identical. it is a life-threatening factory defect. *ak

*jb
