Hi, i'm someone who also has been beat up my chrysler intrepid. on wenesday feb 7, 2007 i was at an auction and saw this great looking 1999 chrysler intrepid with only 78,000 miles on it. my girl needed a good dependable car to get to work, man i didn't want another car payment, so i was very happy when i won the bid. the car ran very well, quite, 78,000 and a dodge, you could not do better than that (smile). well that's not true, my smile quickly turned into resentment after having the car only 9 days and the motor blew up. when i first got the interpid, i took it and got the oil changed the very next day, we road good for 9 days. after the motor blew i had it taken to the dodge dealership not knowing why the car had just stopped and would not start again. i'm telling myself that it couldn't be the motor, because it only had 78,000 miles on it and everyone knows an engine like that is in great shape. well i was in for a rude awakening. as the service dept took me to my car the employee told me that i should look at getting another car. i said why is that? his answer was your engine is blown and the company wont let us work on them. what! isn't dodge the maker of this car, why is it that you can't work on the car that your company made. his answer was the company just don't want us to touch them. if that isn't a dead give away on a bs engine what is, can someone please help me on what my rights or what i can do about this? *jb

I was driving neighbor and grandson down interstate to destination 25 miles. away. approximately 20 miles into trip began to feel car pulling back as i tried to maintain highway speed of 60 mph. car stalled as i exited interstate and every time i had to stop. made it to destination and car completely shut down as i pulled in. checked oil and radiator, oil down x1qt. barely made it home, after resting car approx. 15 minutes using emergency lights the entire way home. stalled 10 times after i exited interstate. took to reputable mechanic, had to drive slow because car refused to accelerate. found out timing chain broke, estimate $1,500.00 to repair. received call 2 days later, engine shot due to piston and possible risk pin damage done to cylinders. it would cost much more money to diagnose exactly due to fact engine needed to be torn down. we bought car from individual in 2002, currently has only 93,000 miles sounds like chrysler owes many people a great deal of money! will never buy chrysler or dodge car again.*jb

 (1) driving normally with regular oil changes 3000 miles or less. (2) driving on interstate with infant and self and car seized up and control and brakes went out!!!!! (3) told will need new 2.7 engine. seems that it's common knowledge that the 2.7l engine in the dodge intrepid is no good because of oil flow problems. dodge has so far avoided having to pay for the neglect. please do something!! thise is seriously dangerous!!!!! i'm a fairly large lady thank goodness. if i had been just a little weaker there would have been no way that i could have stopped that big beast of an intrepid. the engine just quite on me and the power to the steering and the brakes all were usless. i was on the interstate with my new born son!! even the scdot gentleman on duty knew exactly what happened, he actually told me!!! now if every mechanic and everyone familiar even a little with the intrepid knows of this problem with the 2.7l engine in the dodge intrepid then why oh why is dodge not recalling them??? is it all about money again it seems to me they stand to loose far far more in the lost sales of the future for not owning up to their error. it really bothers me that my life and especially my new born sons life is less important to them then this!!! thank you for taking care of this matter.

I have a 1999 chrysler interpid with 82,000 miles. the vehicles has maintained. the timing belt broke while i was driving on the freeway at 70mph. i heard a terrible noise and immediately pulled off the freeway and called a towing company. the engine repair shop repaired the timing belt and also did major cleaning in the engine because of an excessive amount of black sludge. initially accusing me of never changing the oil. the shop had the car running again and did one last cold start checking fluid levels which were found to be normal. my car was then taken on a test drive first at freeway speeds and then through town and on the way back to the shop the vehicle died. no engine light came on prior to the engine dying. the car was towed back to the shop and the engine was found to be seized. i recieved an estimate from them at about $7,000. i wanted a 2nd opinion so i had the car towed to a dodge/chrysler dealership and they diagnosed the engine as being seized and i recieved an estimate of $7,700. i contacted the chrysler corporation and was immediately told there was nothing they could do to help me and that they hoped that i would give them another chance in the future to restore faith in their product. in researching for a rebuilt engine we were told by engine supply companies that this problem is very common in this car and that it was not recommened to put a rebuilt engine in the car because of the sludge buildup. two different places have told me that this is a common problem using pennzoil and told me never to use it again.

Repeated repairs of same problem, i had to have a timing chain put on this car twice within a year and half of having this car,i also have had leaks from the oil pan and the transmission which has been repaired twice thus far. now the problem is that the oil light comes on when the car goes from fast moving speed to lower speed and it stays on for a minute or two then it goes off, but it does come back on eventually.this car has had more repairs than all the cars i have owned and just a matter of time before the engine does go out .*ak

While driving home from work, going 60 mph, my car stalled (jerked) and within 2 seconds came back on by itself. the next day while driving to work, the car did the same thing. today while driving to thanksgiving dinner at 25 mph, my car stalled completely. i heard no knocking or ticking prior to the stall. i was able to pull off to the side of the road; a hard feat in itself since the power steering went out. after 30 seconds, i was able to restart the car and finish my journey. on the way home from the dinner, traveling at 60 mph, my car stalled again. i was driving down a rural road and just wanted to make it home with my daughter; it was extremely cold outside with 25 mph winds and i was 25 miles from home. i was able to restart the car and continue on; this happened 3 times until the fourth time when the car would not turn over again. i got the car towed home on thanksgiving night at 7:00pm, most certainly ruining someone's holiday! *jb

1999 chrysler intrepid engine siezed up, no warning, driving on very busy expressway, luckily i was able to get over, or it could have been really bad. apparently a lot of this has been happening to intrepids because of the aluminum engine design. it is very scary, unsafe, and also very, very costly. so much for the dodge/chrylser quality, uh?*ak

I have a 1999 dodge intrepid, 2.7 liter engine, 65000 miles on vehicle. the vehicle has been properly maintained. timing belt broke on vehicle and it was towed to a chrysler/dodge dealer for repairs. mechanic began to disassemble motor and found a black sludge inside engine - said it looked as if the motor oil had never been changed. this vehicle has been properly maintained. i was then informed the motor would need to be replaced. i have contacted several mechanics for repair estimates - which range from $4500.00-$7000.00. one person i spoke with said that a jasper replacement motor was available that has fixed the design problem with the oil. i am trying to find information regarding this motor. from the website i was reviewing, intrepid.clan-510.org this sludge is a problem not typically encountered, but it seems to be more common with the intrepid. another motor replacement business, i contacted, said they were getting requests for the 2.7 liter motor every day and said repairs would be $7000.00. do you have any information on problems associated with this motor? can you provide me with contact information? *jb

My wife was driving along with my diabetic mother and our 11 month old son to the louisville airport *3 hours away* to pick up her family, who was flying in for a visit. without warning the motor blew. they were lucky enough to have a state trooper happen along who gave them a ride back into town, *they only made it approximately 25 miles from home*. we only had the car for 5 months and had never had any problems with it, nor any indications something was going to happen. the car has approximately 80,000 miles on it, and i realize it is passed it's 36000 mile warranty but with all the engine failures this 2.7 has had it is shameful! i am just grateful the state police came by when he did, as it was a hot day out, and they were on the cumberland parkway, meaning no where to walk to for help.
