Oil light came on without any other warning. stopped car to check oil and it was full. car would not start. called dealer and told him what happened, they asked for oil change receipts even before the saw the car. towed it to dealer who charged $230 to take engine apart so the extended warranty company could come in to see it. they denied the claim because of lack of maintenance. i bought the car used and it had 21,000 miles on it. the first time i took it to have the oil changed they told me it had sludge. i paid to have the engine cleaned and changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles myself after that. when i called chrysler to see about them covering it i was greeted with the person telling me i should have taken my oil pan off to check for problems hen i changed my oil. he told me i was full of s**t when i told him no one does that. after that comment i asked to speak to his supervisor and was told to go f*** myself. i tried filing a complaint with the better business bureau and was told they couldn't do anything about chrysler's customer service people and unless i could provide them with receipts they could file a complaint against chrysler either. is everyone in detroit in on this conspiracy? now i am stuck owing $5,500 on a car i can't drive or sell. i called a junk yard about selling it to them and they said the best they could do would be $600. the man said he gets about 3 calls a week about the intrepid either someone getting rid of one or looking for an engine. so here the car sits in my garage while i try to find something to get me back and forth to work. *ak

My 2000 intrepid with only 77,000 has a blown engine. there was no warning lights, and only driving 15 minutes loud knocking noises ocurred which i pulled over to investigate and then could not restart the car. after towing to my mechanic, he advised me my engine was so hot he didn't know how it didn't start on fire. the repair cost is $6000 which i still owe $5000 for the car. we did all the required maintenace such as oil changes, filter changes, etc. there is no reason for such a vaulty motor to be allowed and with 89 complaints on this web site alone plus all the motors complaints there must be out there, something needs to be done here. i am sure if someone contact every chrysler's customer of these 2.7 liter motors i am sure there would be a class action suit. please advise me on how to have my motor repaired by chrysler. *ak
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE

Engine began making loud noises, took to wildle dodge chrysler who informed me that the engine is knocking, sludge, noisy, and that i need a new engine. at 77,620 miles, and still owing $4300 in the vehicle, i did not feel i should have to spend $5000 for a new engine. when we called the manufacturer, they stated that i did not regularly change my oil causing my own problem. i was very frustrated at that accusation since we did change the oil regularly, we just didn't have all the receipts to prove it. i don't understand how chrysler can get away with this since there are over 400 customers that this happened to. they should be ashamed. *tr

2000 intrepid 2.7l engine started with frequent oil loss starting at 1.5l between oil changes and ending at nearly 6l between oil changes. no signs of burning, or leaking, and no oil was found in the coolant. then a noise could be heard in the engine a, rattling noise, engine quit before noise could be diagnosed. a few weeks later it was discovered that the cam sensor was out, replaced it car run. the noise persisted and was diagnosed as the crank bearing was shot. the engine failed critically shortly after. 1998 concord, purchased to replace intrepid, engine already failed and was replaced with a new engine from chrysler by the time i bought it the new engine had roughly 85 000 km on it. this concord has a complete service history through our local mechanic since day of purchase in 1998. the previous owner kept up to date on all oil changes up and until i received the vehicle. i have been driving the vehicle for about 1 or 2 months and recently had its oil changed at the 6000km mark. only a day or 2 ago the car on start up has been making a rattle noise for about 2 sec then stops. that means i have between 2 cars seen 2 2.7l catastrophic failures and am probably going to see a third. one i could admit to maybe being my fault in some way, 2 is defiantly stretching it, 3.... there is a problem and its not the fault of the consumer, something needs to be done. chrysler needs to resolve this issue for all impacted customers. *tr

This is not a safety issue, it's an expense & aggravation issue. i bought a 2000 chrysler (made in canada) intrepid from a local chrysler dealer. i have less than 51,000 miles on it and the engine is destroyed. two repair garages have told me the 2.7 ltr engine in these cars have been faulty. i called chrysler's home office today. there is no extended warranty and they are offering no reimbursement. a remanufactured engine was estimated at almost $5,000. i would like to know if there is a class action suit against chrylser re: this engine at this time and how i would go about joining in it, if so.*ak

I own a 2000 chrysler intrepid v6-2.7 liter vehicle. at 57,442 miles i noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine of the car. the dealership i purchased the car from diagnosed the engine noise as a non-compressing or extending timing chain tensioner. the tensioner was replaced and the cost was covered under my 60,000-mile warranty. last week i noticed the same ticking noise while i was driving the car. before i could reach a safe destination the car engine completely stopped running at 64,222 miles. after coming to a stop the car would not start again. i had the car towed to the dealership to be looked at and told the service advisor i heard the same timing chain noise that occurred at 57,442 miles. the dealership service advisor stated that they were able to start the car for a short period of time and also checked the engine oil. the service advisor informed me that i would need a new engine at a price of approximately $6,700.00?! i asked the service advisor if a diagnostic test was performed and he said

Timing chain broke and valves were damaged, which (according to mechanics) virtually is unheard of on such a late model car. not only are mechanics refusing to repair the problem (because of the type of engine), they are saying i will probably need a new engine (upwards of $3500 in cost). several mechanics expressed that they have seen several people with this problem who have the 6 cylinder, 2.7 liter engine on this year, make and model of car. basically, i was told that working on this problem with this type of car is a big headache, and they won't touch it. why hasn't this problem been recalled?

Consumer stated that 2.7 liter engine caught on fire. consumer was driving and noticed the smoke under the engine. consumer opened the hood and the engine was engulfed in flames. there was evidence of motor oil all over the engine. vehicle was towed to the dealer, who insisted after an inspection that vehicle was fine. however, the vehicle had serious engine problems. consumer's insurance company refused to assist stating that this problem was the manufacturer's fault. consumer contacted the manufacturer, and was told that warranty expired. this vehicle had only 53,000 miles, and became totally useless. *ak

The oil lamp came on while sitting at a stoplight, the engine tachometer read below 500rpm and the vehicle was up to temperature. once the vehicle accelerated through the light the oil lamp turned off. at the next stoplight the oil lamp again came on under the same conditions. after this the vehicle seemed ok. a few days later the oil light came on under the same conditions. an appointment was then made to have the vehicle serviced. before taking the vehicle in to the dealership the engine was started and made a light ticking noise. this noise did not continue after the engine was shut off and allowed to cool down overnight. the vehicle was towed to the dealership for fear of damaging the engine further. the dealership found that the oil sending unit was not working properly, and also was leaking oil. they found no problems with the oiling system and assured me that the oil pressure and volume was within chrysler's specifications. the dealership replaced the oil sensor for time and material being the vehicle was out of waranty. on the way home from the dealership the engine started making a very loud knocking sound although the oil lamp was not on. the car was then taken to a local repair shop and the timing chain tensioner was found to be stuck allowing slack in the timing chain. after replacing the tensioner with a new tensioner from the dealership and reassembling the engine, the knocking noise was noticibly quieter but still indicated a problem. (note: the engine made no knocking noise at all when cold, it only knocked when up to temperature) the repairman contacted a contact at a different dealership and was informed off of the record that they also had an intrepid in for the same thing, and they had to also replace the timing chain and timing chain guides to rid the vehicle of the knocking sound when up to temperature. the vehicle is curently at the repair shop waiting for the additional parts to see if this remidies the problem.
