ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
RQ06002CHRYSLER GROUP LLC02/27/200606/22/2006ENGINE STALLING
On february 27, 2006 rq06-002 was opened in response to 60 complaints of engine stall, mostly during left-hand turns, in model year (my) 2004 to 2006 chrysler pacifica vehicles that were outside the scope of recall 04v-113.in march 2004, daimlerchrysler initiated recall 04v-113 on 34,561 my 2004 pacifica vehicles to correct a condition that could result in engine stall while making a left-hand turn after a cold-start.during rq06-002 it was determined that recall 04v-113 did correct the specific cause of the engine stalling condition for that specific population.however, two other conditions were identified that could also cause engine stalling during turning maneuvers:(1) an issue with misbuilt fuel pumps that primarily affected about 17,000 my 2005 pacifica vehicles built during august and september 2004; and (2) a software condition affecting vapor purge in about 131,000 my 2005-06 pacifica vehicles built from july 2004 through november 2005. an engineering analysis, ea06-013, has been opened to further examine the scope, frequency and safety consequences associated with each of these conditions in the subject vehicles.

Took car to dealer for routine maintenance. dealer said that the car is unsafe to drive and that the engine subframe was corroded. after an internet search found that this is a known and common problem and that apparently the part was recalled in canada. when i spoke with chrysler, they said that they would not provide any support, and that had i reported the problem when it started they would have repaired it under warranty. i have had the car regularly serviced at the dealer. as a consumer i have no way of knowing if the engine subframe is corroded. however, a dealer who is maintaining the car should have been able to do so. in any event, the car is unsafe to drive, i am expected to pay a significant sum, and this problem is pervasive. the dealer told me a similar car came this past week with an identical problem. *tr

Told at time of service by dealer that the engine cradle was rusting thru threatening failure. this is a recognized problem in the 2005 vehicles which chrysler has extended the warranty out to 10/yr 150,000 miles for, but they are refusing to extend the warranty on the 2004 model. repair estimate of $2900. *tr

1st time: driving straight around 20-45 mph when engine light came on & engine started acting up. stopped shortly at a stop light & engine died. had to wait several minutes before the engine would start & engine light stayed on until we got to auto mechanic's shop approx 2 miles away. multiple times in the last 2 months: sometimes engine light comes on as we are stopping or decelerating or turning left after a stop light changes. engine then acts up & subsequently dies shortly after that. after a few minutes we are able to start it & drive it home or to the dealer. both the auto mechanic's & at the chrysler dealer's diagnostic machines identified fault code p0508 iac circuit low & told us we had to change out the idle control motor (chrysler part # 4593851-aa). we have had this part changed out & the throttle body cleaned twice now with no resolution of the problem. we also have noticed on occasion when we have our foot on the brake at a stop, the engine may arbitrarily race for a couple of seconds. fortunately our foot is on the brake when this happens.

Car now has 140000 miles. i am on the 3rd full set of engine mounts and now 3 of them are broken again and need replacement. this could easily have turned into a safety issue. this is obviously a defect that chrysler knows about. why has there been no recall?

Steering became difficult (tight) with catching during turns. diagnosed as a broken vehicle engine cradle failed on 7 year old vehicle with 60,000 miles. chrylser has acknowledged failures of this part and has provided a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty for 2004-2005 pacifica's that were operated in areas of high road salt usage (mine was in il for 20,000 miles. for some reason chrysler states my vin does not qualify. see copy of letter below: (this letter was provided by a pacifica owner, not sent to me.) this letter is to inform you that the warranty period on your chrysler group llc pacifica's front engine cradle has been extended to 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. this engine cradle extended warranty coverage applies to chrysler pacifica model years 2004-2005. we are extending the warranty period on your front engine cradle because some vehicles operated in areas of high road salt usage, may experience engine cradle corrosion resulting in a drive ability vibration and or/shake. if your vehicle is operating properly, there is nothing you are required to do. if you are experiencing the conditions as described in this warranty extension within the 10 year or 150,000 mile period, simply contact your dealer to have repairs performed. your dealer will inspect the engine cradle for perforation corrosion on the rear cross car cradle support and replace if necessary. if you have already experienced this engine cradle concern and have paid to have it repaired, you may be eligible to receive a reimbursement. you may send your original receipts, invoices and/or repair order with adequate proof of payment (copy of the front and back of cancelled check, or copy of credit card receipt, etc.). please mail to the following address for reimbursement, your claim will be acted upon within 60 days of receipt:

I was driving my 2004 chrysler pacifica when the acceleration started to taper off gradually. eventually it went down to 25 mph. i was unable to go any faster so i pulled onto the shoulder. when i turned off the engine smoke started flowing out of the vents in the car. within a couple of minutes fire was shooting into the passenger's foot well from the engine. the police was on the scene immediately and was unable to put it out -two fire trucks and 4 police cars arrived at the scene. they stated they had never seen a car go up so fast. there was nothing but the shell left. i was lucky that i didn't hesitate to pull over and get out of the car.

Failure of both motor mounts on our 2004 chrylser pacifica. parts from local dealer have been back ordered for weeks. additional research on my part has shown this is a very common problem with this model. motor mounts should not fail but especially when the vehicle has less than 90k miles.

2004 chrysler pacifica in need of engine mounts, have been on order for over a year with local dealer. finding out there are lots and lots and lots of us with engine mount problems! now i'm being told not to drive my car so much, what do they expect me to do ? walk! worried about my families safety. this is an issued that needs to be investigated. *tr

I had a bad vibration in the front . so i took it to the dealer since i had a factory extended warranty bumper to bumper., they said the car needed tires. so i changed the tire it still vibrated. go back now it is the rack & pinion bushings are bad . but i need to replace the k frame because a weld is broken. they say i broke it cause there are scratches on it. {not that vibration did it} so i paid to have a new one put in . 8 months later the motor mounts break and the engine drops 2 from the ground . thank god my family was not driving down a highway. so i take it back and they say because there is scratches on it again that broke the bushings .once again i ended up paying to have it fixed. *tr

Motor mounts on my '04 chrysler pacifica are broken. warranty does not cover this item. so many people are having this same problem. the mounts are all on a back-order status and no one can tell me when they will get any restock of them. so now many people are driving around with unsafe vehicles. i've checked e-bay and dealerships for these items. no luck. i think chrysler needs to re-call these mounts since many owners are having this same problem. *tr
02/01/2006400001
2004 chrysler pacifica since 2007 my pacifica has had this problem. the design of the motor and transmission mounts are of very poor quality, causing repeated failures. i've searched around and apparently its a very common problem. its so common that dealers have had continuous back orders for this models motor mounts for two years now. i've replaced the mounts a few times only to have them fail again. a common symptom, which i have, is random shifting while driving, lurching of the car, clunking noised in the engine compartment, all while driving at speeds between 15 and 60 mph. they cause other failures from damaging electrical lines and connectors to causing transmission fluid leaks. if you do a search on chrysler pacifica motor mounts you'll find wave after wave after wave of complaints on web boards from what must be the vast majority of pacifica owners. apparently it also affects every model year for this vehicle, not just the 2004's. this is a widespread problem caused by poor design, and a potential safety hazard. i realize chrysler is going through some tough times right now, but there should be an investigation. *tr

Our 2004 pacifica has a broken motor mount, and we were told by dealer that the part is on back order indefinitely, now driving around with a broken motor mount, possible damage being done to the engine. the car is covered under warranty but can't get it fixed because chrysler is not making any parts any time soon, if at all; we want to know when chrysler will start making parts to fix our car. *tr

I have a chyrsler 04 pacifica and it has been trouble for way over a year now. it needs motor mounts and there is none available and has not been in a year. the chyrsler dealer and corporation has no clue to when and if they will ever have these mounts. i still have thousands of dollars to pay for this car and it is about to put me on my two feet. i have had to replace two sets of head lights in which both times they went out at the same time and i have had to replace the alternator and starter within a month of each other and the idle pulley had to be replaced. the only thing that chyrsler recalled that was recently fixed was the erg value. all of this other stuff is out of pocket and the motor mounts are in demand all over the u.s. take a look at topix.com/ chrysler motor mounts and you will see 41 other people like me with the same problem. *tr

The water hose became disconnected from the radiator on my 2004 chrysler pacifica , and the repair shop stated my motor mounts should be replace because the engine is not stationary which caused the problem. there is also knocking and popping noises when i break or turn corners. i took my car in to have the repairs done, but we can't find parts because too many other chrysler owners need to complete the same type repairs. i contacted chrysler corporation for possible recall, but the items or not listed. i purchase the extended warranty at the time of purchase, but nothing that goes wrong with the car is covered. help! there are too many problems with the car. *tr

In investigating unusually fast and uneven tire wear, mechanic doing alignment noticed side engine mount partially broken and front engine mount completely broken and detached, so that engine moves while car is in motion. car cannot be safely driven until repaired, and chrysler cannot supply front engine mount. private garage replaced both mounts and new front engine mount failed immediately when car started to move. part appears defective, or some other design flaw causes failure. chrysler dealer reports 1300+ front engine mounts on backorder with supplier, indicating widespread problem. *tr

Oil pan plug became stripped very easily resulting in need for oil pan replacement. mechanics reported oil pan unusually thin where plug screws in resulting in easy strip. to emphasize this must be a frequent occurrence, i was informed that my car is now on a waiting list of at least a month before one would be available. i was further notified that 156 are back ordered and 96 additional are in the pipeline for this particular pan for this engine. if i had the other engine available for this car, there would be immediate replacement. i was further warned that the car is dangerous to drive now because the plug could fall out at any time with a resultant fire and/or seizing up of the engine from rapid drainage of oil. *tr the consumer also heard front end noises. the consumer was informed the right side lever bushing was defective. updated 05/28/08

After having no problems with the 2004 chrysler pacifica for nearly 2 years, all of a sudden over the last 2 weeks it has begun to stall at inappropriate times. the first time i was slowing down for a car in front of me it just died. the next 2 times it happened while i was on the interstate using cruise control at 70 mph. the next time i was on the interstate without cruise control. today, it happened while i was idling in park, engine fully warmed up. each time all dashboard lights went out, and the key was in switch but not on. i was able to immediately restart the vehicle by turning ignition to on without having to stop and without having to shift out of drive. at first, i thought maybe i was hitting key with my knee, i was a bit tall, but this last time, my leg was nowhere near the ignition. i have a kill switch alarm system, but no one has been able to determine the source of my problem. *tr

I am only the second owner my 2004 pacifica for three months and have never owned a vehicle with this many problems. i only drove it two weeks when i started hearing a terrible rattling noise around the front right tire. i had my local chrysler dealership look at the car. they said i need to replace the rotors and sway links. we replaced those however the problems was not fixed. i took it back at which now it's pouring oil out from under it. they attempted to fix it however they do not. i took it back a third time they finally fixed the oil leak but the rattling and popping in the front suspension is still there. i have since taken it to an independent mechanic who assisted that the top and bottom motor mounts were completely broken. i replaced those and they seem to think the popping is possibly the control arm or bushings. only two days ago the air pressure sensor in the left front wheel broke and i have an engine light on. the engine light reader stated the car had an emission system leak. i can not believe a car this new could have all these problems. i am very unsatisfied with this automobile. i am in shock. chrysler should make this right. *jb

I lease a 2004 pacifica with approx 30,000 on the vehicle. several weeks ago while driving up an interstate highway i felt a front vibration and suddenly heard a loud thump. i immediately exited my car to see if i had a flat tire and noticed that what had made the noise was from losing the bottom half of my front bumper. i drove directly to my dealer whereby the front was inspected and referred to the district parts manager for chrysler. i have just received word from chrysler that they, nor the dealer, will cover this 'lost part' because i never retrieved it from the interstate where it was lying in the middle of the road and had already been run over by at least one or two 18 wheeler trucks. i furthered whether chrysler expected me to pick up this large piece in my business attire or more importantly risk my life in doing so because if i had retrieved the piece from the highway then they would consider it under warranty. i actually had the car in for a routine 3000 mile inspection 1 week prior to this incident and would have expected that something like this would have been noted by the mechanic. chrysler say's that they back their dealers which naturally solicited a response from me that they should rather back their customers first. chrysler broadcasts an excellent bumper to bumper warranty and other than my fan belt failing within two months since taking possession of the car i have not used the warranty. *nm

Motor mounts on my 2004 chrysler pacifica are broken! this is a hight risk and parts seem to be on back order costs are high and this must be recalled. this is a ongoing issue on the pacifica! i found this out after reading serval forums which many many people have the same issue and all cant believe that this is not recalled yet. broken motor mounts can cause tbe engine to fall down onto the street and could cause deadly excidenses!

When you stop you hear and fill a large clank and the engine moving forward. we took it to the shop and waited 2 months for the first motor mount to be ordered and received there was a national backorder. while in the shop they discovered the front motor mount was now bad. this time there is 2600 on national back order and this time there is not a time frame to have it fixed. i called chrysler and they will not talk to me because i bought my car used in 2006. chrysler does not show me as the original owner. i am driving my family in a car that is un-safe. if chrysler knows of the issue then why are they not doing anything to help. any dealer i call or email tells me the same thing. they say they receive many calls a day about the part but they don't know. you can put your name on the list and pay for it but can not give you a time line to get it fixed. now my warranty is up during this wait. it is going on 5 months now. *tr

My car was recently state inspected and it was discovered that i needed the front and rear motor mounts on my 2004 chrysler pacifica. after researching the problem, i read complaints from many owners who had the exact same failures with their pacifica's despite low mileage (30,000 to 40,000 miles). the problem appears to be a serious defect with this car because the motor mount is on backorder with the majority of chrysler dealers. a chrysler parts department employee at reedman's dealership in langhorne, pa. told me the part is on backorder with no availability date forecasted. the employee told me this is a sure sign of a serious problem when this occurs. i have a problem now because i won't be able to drive my car when the state inspection sticker expires the end of april. i have read the shortage is possibly self inflicted so as to avoid warranty repairs. i don't believe that is true because bad motor mounts could lead to an accident and liability issues. however, i do believe this needs to be investigated and if deemed credible a recall initiated to correct the reason for the early failures i.e. defective part or engineering flaw. *tr

After having my pacifica for 1.5 years and experiencing 19 problems (54 days in the shop!); 2-3 of which are recurring (i.e. the engine light coming on), even the service department at my dealership stated that they would stand behind my efforts to get a vehicle replacement! we are completely happy with the dealership's service as they have stood behind this lemon better than the manufacturer appears to be able to. after talking with the chrysler representative, mr. craig kishner, i was informed that the best chrysler could do was to refund my extended warranty price. i pushed back and my boyfriend also called to announce our dismay at the manner in which we are being treated after being tremendously patient for 1.5 years to see if this lemon could be repaired to a reasonable level of usability. mr kishner then came back with the answer that chrysler would only step up for the previously laughable answer. we had hoped for a laudable answer. i find it difficult to believe that a manufacturer, with the questionable track record of chrysler, would want to create more adverse publicity than they already have chalked up over the course of their existence. nonetheless, we will pursue this through the courts and undoubtedly tell all of our friends and business colleauges of this horrific experience. *ak

My pacifica 2004 model engine just stalled when i turned into my company's parking lot. then, i could no longer steer and lost control of my steering wheel. my friends at work drove right behind me and just passed by almost hitting me like a sandwich. then, i checked to see if there was enough fuel in the tank; i saw about 3/4 left on the fuel gauge. so, i re-started the engine and parked my car safely in the assigned lot. i noticed for the first time, the fuel gauge went from 3/4 level to the full tank level and stayed there the entire time. when i did re-start the engine, after 8 hours just to go home, i noticed the fuel gauge was still full. it was very funny and started to drop down to 3/4 again!! right after that, i took my foot off the gas pedal to let the engine warm up, as i always do, my engine could not hold its rpm to keep running and kept stalling again repeatedly. how did i go home that night? i re-started the engine and tried to hold on the gas pedal for about 50-65 seconds by watching the clock in my car, then i heard a clicking sound from inside of the engine compartment, e.g. air-condition working, or idle timing, or something. but, i still kept my foot on the gas pedal until 100-110 seconds and took my foot of the gas pedal. the engine did not stall anymore, so, i luckily could drive home in the night. when i arrived at home, i stopped the engine and re-started again, many times. the engine was perfectly normal as i had been driving them for 2.5 years, like nothing ever had happened. so, i did some investigating and visited several car websites. some of them suggested i file a complaint to nhtsa for this problem because other pacifica owners had similar problems. and, i just did because this problem is very detrimental serious and can easily cause serious damages to life and property of anyone inside the vehicles. *jb

*jb
