RQ06002CHRYSLER GROUP LLC02/27/200606/22/2006ENGINE STALLING
On february 27, 2006 rq06-002 was opened in response to 60 complaints of engine stall, mostly during left-hand turns, in model year (my) 2004 to 2006 chrysler pacifica vehicles that were outside the scope of recall 04v-113.in march 2004, daimlerchrysler initiated recall 04v-113 on 34,561 my 2004 pacifica vehicles to correct a condition that could result in engine stall while making a left-hand turn after a cold-start.during rq06-002 it was determined that recall 04v-113 did correct the specific cause of the engine stalling condition for that specific population.however, two other conditions were identified that could also cause engine stalling during turning maneuvers:(1) an issue with misbuilt fuel pumps that primarily affected about 17,000 my 2005 pacifica vehicles built during august and september 2004; and (2) a software condition affecting vapor purge in about 131,000 my 2005-06 pacifica vehicles built from july 2004 through november 2005. an engineering analysis, ea06-013, has been opened to further examine the scope, frequency and safety consequences associated with each of these conditions in the subject vehicles.

Ea06-010 was opened based on information gathered in preliminary evaluation pe06-009.pe06-009 was opened based on information obtained in a peer information request as part of a preliminary evaluation (pe05-050) of fuel tank puncture in model year (my) 2003 through 2006 nissan murano vehicles.in january 2006, nissan submitted a defect information report to odi that identified a defect in the fuel tank shielding in approximately 209,000 my 2003 through 2006 nissan murano vehicles.to remedy the problem, nissan installed shields on the exposed front surfaces of the recalled vehicles.peer data collected for my 2004 through 2005 pacifica vehicles during pe05-050 included 120 field reports documenting tank replacements due to puncture or damage by road debris as part of a parts restriction program conducted at the request of the tank supplier (inergy). analysis of the information provided by chrysler during pe05-050, pe06-009 and ea06-010 show that the front surface of the fuel tanks in the subject pacifica vehicles is not completely protected fromroad debris by the floor pan or other body structure.the tanks were compared with peer vehicles, including several identified by chrysler as sharing similar design characteristics (unshielded high-density polyethylene plastic fuel tanks in a saddlebag configuration).some of the peer designs reviewed by odi packaged the tanks in recessed cavities in the floor pan or used shields to protect exposed surfaces on the front of the tank.in general, these tanks had the lowest complaint rates for tank puncture by road debris. however, other peer designs reviewed by odi had packaging similar to the subject vehicles and some of these also had some complaints of tank puncture.none of the peer vehicles analyzed by odi had tanks puncture data comparable to chrysler's field reports from its part restriction programs, so that data could not be used in peer comparisons. analysis of the complaint data shows that the rate for the subject vehicles is about half that observed in the recalled murano vehicles and not significantly higher than some of the peer vehicles analyzed with similar design characteristics.testing by the nhtsa vehicle research and testing center (vrtc) showed differences between the murano and pacifica fuel tank packaging and exposure to road debris thrown by the front tires.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

On february 22, 2006, odi opened pe06-009 to investigate reports that the fuel tanks on model year (my) 2004 to 2005 chrysler pacifica vehicles may be punctured by contact with road debris.the number of reports submitted by chrysler was significantly higher than those submitted by other manufacturers who were requested to submit data as part of investigation pe05-050 into my 2003 to 2006 nissan murano vehicles that may have had insufficient shielding of the fuel tank to prevent punctures after contact with road debris.nissan issued recall 06v-003 involving increasing the shielding of the fuel tanks to reduce the likelihood of tank punctures. chrysler has noted that they had in place from january 2003 to june 2005 a parts restriction program on pacifica fuel tank replacements which may have made the number of reports artificially high in comparison to manufacturers which did not have a similar program in effect.chrysler also questioned whether many of the field reports of fuel tanks replaced due to damage from unknown cause were actually punctured. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-010) to gather additional information concerning the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

I have recently made a complaint to chrysler about a 2004 pacifica that i bought about 4mos ago. i know that my car may be out of dealer warranties, but when there are things going on with your vehicle that's under recall, something should be done about before someone is injured or even killed. my gas pedal sticks, my car has stalled off on several occassions while turning in the middle of an intersection, and my fuel system was not holding or distrubuting fuel properly and my motor mounts are broken! i can't afford to pay for my car monthly, and pay for repairs that are almost going on with all 2004 pacificas'. i park my car only to use one vehicle that 2 adults and a17 and18yr have to travel with when 3 of the 4 of these persons work. life is hard and its not fair that the big companies continue to get away with it and the hard working person is falling deeper and deeper into a do it the best way you can situation. problems with the fuel system have supposedly been fixed and they are included in a recall that does'nt include my vin but my make and model and year! come on america!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 chrysler pacific. while driving at 35mph the fuel gauge drops from half a tank to no fuel at all as the vehicle shuts off. the vehicle will restart back up at once but the gauges will show there is no fuel in the fuel tank. the manufacturer was called and informed her to contact nhtsa because nhtsa make the decision on the recalls. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for any inspection or diagnostic test. the failure and current mileage was 71,000....

At any given time when pressing on the accelerator, the accelerator locks up and does not depress. after several attempts it releases and lurches forward. this has been going on for at least 6 months now. it happens about 4 or 5 times per week. no repairs done to date. vehicle should be recalled for this defect.

The events leasing up to the defect were erratic gas gauge readings, from 1/2 tank to empty immediately, then sometimes back to half. the car has stalled on a couple of occasions while driving.being told by dealer that it needs parts that have nothing to do with gas gauge readings ie: throttle body cleaning, map sensor, fuel filler tube. this is an extremely dangerous situation. i have an extended warranty on the vehicle however the parts that im being told are needed are not under warranty. however upon reading all of the discussion boards and looking at former recalls the parts that are being recommended to replace to fix the problem are under my warranty. *tr

This vehicle has had the siphoning hoses to the gas tank replaced three times. which all three failed all three times. the fuel pump has been changed. the whole fuel tank has been replaced. the gas gauge fluctuates from half tank to empty. the check engine light comes on every week. after resetting by the serviceman it comes back on with in a week. all of these safety defects have been repaired however it remains doing all of the above leaving this vehicle to be very unsafe. please note this so that any others may have this to refer to. *tr

Tl* - the contact has a 2004 chrysler pacifica. the contact stated that the clock display turns off, the gas gauge needle floats up and down, and electrical equipment would go dim. the contact stated that the gas gauge registers the fuel as low when the gas tank is almost full and that a rear interior light goes on. also, the dvd player switches songs as if it were searching for radio stations. the child safety locks for her windows only work occasionally. the heater doesn't always turn on, but when it does it cannot be adjusted unless the power to the vehicle is turned off. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled twice while she was driving 55 mph with an odometer reading of 58000 miles. during one of the stalling incidents she was trying to change lanes, but the car would not accelerate, so she pulled over onto the median where the car turned off. the contact was able to restart the vehicle and resume driving. *nm

We have a 2004 chrysler pacifica manufactured on 10/31/03. in november 2006 @ 49k miles, we began to encounter problems with the fuel level indicator. even though the tank was full it will drop to empty and indicate low fuel. it then it will bounce back to half full or full. then drop again to low fuel. it may do this 10 times during a short cross town trip. we took in back to dealer and was told it was a bad fuel control module and that chrysler had just issued a recall (f44) for this very reason, but that my vin number was not included in the recall. i called chrysler to see why it was not covered, but they said since my vin number was not included that my repair would not be covered under the recall. i would like to make a complaint that the chrysler recall f44 did not include all the effected cars, since my vehicle is experiencing the same failure as those cars identified in the recall. *nm

I have a 2004 chrysler pacifica awd, currently has 50,000 miles. we have had problems since we drove it off the lot. time after time we were told there were no codes signifying any problems, and they could never duplicate the noises we were experiencing. climate control screen went out, this was replaced. message display went out, unable to see safety warnings, compass, menu display stalling when turning at slow speeds popping and clunking noises when turning slowly load clanging noise when shifting from park to reverse, sounds like we ran over a large metal object. leaks on driver side when raining warped rotors at 35,000 miles fuel gauge needle will plunge from f to e when there is a least half tank of gas. i have taken the car in on numerous occasions, they can never duplicate the problem noises to diagnose or fix. *nm

I have talked to the dealership about the gas mileage that my vehicle is getting. it is supposed to get 17 in town and 24 highway. i am only getting 12.8 in town and 13 on the highway. they tell me to wait until it gets to 5,000 miles and it will get better. well, i'm at 4,660 and it is still bad!! definitely not the mileage posted on the dealership papers in the window of my car when i purchased it 5 months age. they wouldn't even write it up for the tech's to look at while it was there for battery problems. i'm taking it in again. *jb

After having my pacifica for 1.5 years and experiencing 19 problems (54 days in the shop!); 2-3 of which are recurring (i.e. the engine light coming on), even the service department at my dealership stated that they would stand behind my efforts to get a vehicle replacement! we are completely happy with the dealership's service as they have stood behind this lemon better than the manufacturer appears to be able to. after talking with the chrysler representative, mr. craig kishner, i was informed that the best chrysler could do was to refund my extended warranty price. i pushed back and my boyfriend also called to announce our dismay at the manner in which we are being treated after being tremendously patient for 1.5 years to see if this lemon could be repaired to a reasonable level of usability. mr kishner then came back with the answer that chrysler would only step up for the previously laughable answer. we had hoped for a laudable answer. i find it difficult to believe that a manufacturer, with the questionable track record of chrysler, would want to create more adverse publicity than they already have chalked up over the course of their existence. nonetheless, we will pursue this through the courts and undoubtedly tell all of our friends and business colleauges of this horrific experience. *ak

While driving the fuel gauge suddenly dropped from 1/2 tank to empty and the fuel alarm sounded. i was able to immediately stop and refuel while only being able to fill about 1/2 a tank full. this happened on three days will on vacation traveling. i called my home purchase dealer after the second event to discuss the problem and was advised to keep the fuel above 1/4 tank and bring to the shop on return from vacation. upon inspection, i was advised that not one but both fuel pumps had 2 different error codes. i was aware of the fuel pump problem and recall and advised, only on asking, that the vin number of my vehicle was not included in the recall list and i was 4,000 miles beyond warranty. the full repair was on me for $600+ dollars. it is obvious that from other postings of this problem that this is a manufacturer defect and my vin number should have been covered. i could not get satisfaction from the dealer or chyrsler. after purchasing chrysler for the last 3 new vehicle purchases i am not inclined for chrysler to be selected for my next new vehicle purchase.*ak

Dt*: the contact stated that the first experience with the vehicle stalling occurred while the vehicle was under warranty. the dealer replaced the fuel module and reprogrammed the engine, which corrected the problem for a while. the vehicle stalling also occurred while cruising. the engine light illuminated prior to the stallings. during one incident, the vehicle completely stalled on the highway traveling 65 mph. the engine would not restart nor would the transmission reengaged. the vehicle was taken to the dealers who determined that there was a tsb regarding the fuel gauge. two modules were replaced in the fuel tank. the manufacturer informed the dealers that the modules replaced was for another vehicle type but was okay to use on the vehicle to which the part was installed. after the replacement part, the engine stalling continued while cruising and the fuel gauge would drop down to low fuel. the vehicle was taken back to the dealers who replaced fuel pump module however the problem persists.

While vacationing in north carolina my fuel gauge would read full then 2 hours later empty then would go to half tank then while on the highway with my 5 year old son i ran out of gas(according to the gauge) when i finally made it to a gas station my 24 gallon tank only wanted to take 7 gallons and the gauge said full. it is now scheduled to go in for a diagnostic test on the 21st of this month when speaking with the dealership in which the vehicle was bought they tried to tell me that there were no open recalls. i have since found out different while researching online. *nm

When my chrysler pacifica gets to 1/2 tank of gas, the car starts to stall. especially when slowing down or turning a curve. i've taken it to the dealership twice (each time i was told that they could not replicate the problem, but i was out of gas -- each time i had 1/2 tank of gas -- when i turned a curve, it showed empty). i was told on the second trip to the dealership to document my mileage, how many gallons of gas i put into the tank, etc.). i filled up on tuesday, september 13, 2005. today, sunday, september 18, 2005, i reached 1/2 tank of gas. i have traveled approximately 242 miles. my car is stalling again. is there a fix for this problem. *nm

My car has completely shut off on me on 4 different occasions. the first time the dealership said it was a fuel line problem and cleaned the fuel line system. the second time the problem happened, leaving me stranded on the side of the road again, the dealership changed a sensor. the 3rd time, same scenario, the dealership told me that they 2nd occasion the computer gave them a fault, but the first time it didn't so they fixed what they thought the problem could be. on the 3rd occasion, they told me that when the 2nd event happened it gave them a fault that could have meant that one of two sensors had gone bad. they said that if the car was under warranty they would have just replaced both sensors. since the car was out of warranty, they just replaced the one that usually goes bad. so on my 3rd trip to the dealership, they replaced the second sensor and of course i had to pay for the labor again. the parts themselves cost $20 each and if asked the first time if i wanted to replace both sensors like they would for a warranty repair, i would certainly had agreed. my 4th event happened 4 weeks ago. my car is still at dealership i type this. they say they have no idea what is wrong with the car, but that they can tear the car apart and check out the wiring and if that's the problem, it will cost $6000 to fix. just to diagnosis the problem i have to pay a minimum of $240 which they tell me may not diagnosis the problem at all. i feel that this vehicle is a huge safety hazard. it only has 30,000 miles on it and has given me nothing but trouble since i purchased it as the second owner on february 28, 2007. the car just shuts off while driving each time leaving me stranded with my 2 young children where ever we are. each time i have had to wait for a tow truck to arrive to take us to safety. i hope that others have this same complaint and that chrysler will do something to make this right. *tr

2004 chrysler pacifica appears to have a flaw in the fuel tank. consumer states that while driving at highway speed the vehicle shut down completely. *nj the consumer stated a few weeks prior he/she were having problems with the gas gauge. once the gauge was down to a half a tank, the needle would fluctuate and the electronic gauge would suddenly drop 20 miles to empty. at one point the engine light illuminated. the mechanic turned the engine light off, however a couple of weeks later, the light illuminated again. the mechanic explained that even though there was fuel in one side of the tank, it was not pumping to where it needed to be in order for the vehicle to continue running. the mechanic replaced the side fuel module on both sides, the fuel module and fuel pump module. *jb

I left home yesterday with 5 children in the car with me to take my daughter to her ballet and music lessons. everything was fine when we left and i don't remember anything significant happening on the drive. after returning home, my oldest daughter went to the garage to get something out of the car. she came back in and told me the garage smelled of gasoline. i went out to find a huge puddle of gas under the car and the plastic (of all things) coupling between the tank and the line leaking profusely. we took the car in for repairs this morning and found that we are going to have to replace the entire tank as it is all made as one piece. the tank alone is $500.00. that isn't including tax or labor. i am also with out a car for the next 3 days. thankfully no one was hurt, but when i think of what could have happened to my children... not to mention had my daughter not found the leak and we had let it leak a full tank of gas out into the garage under where my children sleep! why did they make that thing out of plastic and not protect it from debris on the road?? *jb

On the way home the other night, something on road put a hole in my gas tank of my 2004 chrysler pacifica. getting it replaced is about a $750 job. my husband and i have no idea what we hit so must have not been something large, and we did not go over any railroad tracks either. from research on the internet, i feel this falls under the category that is being investigated right now for chrysler pacifica's where road debris is putting holes in the gas tank. not only do i have to replace the gas tank, i lost over 21 gallons of gas too. *nm

We have a 2004 chrysler pacifica purchased on a lease in 2004. in june we began to encounter problems with the fuel level indicator. even though the tank was full it would drop to empty and indicate low fuel. it then would bounce back to half full or full. then drop again to low fuel. we took in back to dealer and was told it was a defect in the fuel tank float and the entire tank would require replacing. since it was not a drive train problem it was not under warranty. we paid $750.00 to replace the fuel tanks and float. 3 months later it happened again, this time the dealer replaced at no cost, but it would appear the pacifica may have defects, which should have been made by the manufacturer. we were told by the dealer that this problem could cause engine failure while driving. *nm

A similar incident has occurred on my 2004 chrysler pacifica as stated below. on certain passenger vehicles, the fuel pump module and the power train control module (pcm) software may allow the engine to stall under certain operating conditions. the manufacture is stating that because of my vehicle's vin# it wasn't part of this recall# f44. it is clear to me that the same conditions that have happen to the vehicles part of recall# f44 should pertain to any vehicle built prior to the dates associated with this recall chrysler is recognizing for repairs. all pacificas should be under the #f44 recall notice, not just a certain portion. i've had to replace the exact same items listed as a necessary repair to correct the problem. as like recall# f44, i to had to replace the fuel pump modules, for the left and right side. however, the difference is it was out of my own pocket for these repairs.

I own a 2004 chrysler pacifica. i am having a major issue with the fuel gauge. the gauge shows 1/2 full and then the next thing you know is that it drops to empty and you run out of gas. i took the car to the dealership over a month ago and was told that the parts would be in a few days. this issue is dangerous as you run out of gas without a method of knowing what is going on. in addition, when you attempt to fill the tank with gas, it continues to pop avoiding you from putting gas in the car. i can take up to 30 minutes to force 1/2 tank of gas in the car to where the gauge will show the car full. *tr

Vehicle was making a clunking noise at acceleration, vehicle was also making noises that sounded like the shocks needed to be replaced. dealership told me that the both lower control arms were broken and needed to be replaced along with the front and rear motor mounts. after this was done 2 days later vehicle check engine light came on dealership has told me that the emission pump and solenoid has failed - the emission pump was just replaced in november 2007. from reviewing the website it looks like chrylser needs to take responsibility for service. i have asked them for all of my parts that they are removing from my vehicle since i no longer trust the dealership and will be looking for an outside mechanic to service my car. mg *tr

I purchased my '04 pacifica used with 44k miles on it. the day after buying the vehicle the fuel gauge dropped from half tank to completely empty then would bounce back to half full. it did it several more times and when i returned it to the local dealer it was purchased from they were unable to find any problems and there were no diagnostic codes set by this encounter. the vehicle when for a few weeks without having it happen again but i was sure to keep the tank nearly full. yet within the last week it began doing it again with much more frequency. i did some on line research and came up with a recall on the sending units and when i called a chrysler dealership asking about the recall and giving the service person my vin i was told there was no info matching my vin. so i went back to my purchasing dealer and when i brought the car in i was told that it was a fuel sensor and that it would be taken car of. so after having no use of my car for a few days i picked it up this evening thinking it was repaired and low and behold i was barely out of the dealers lot and the same fuel gauge issues are once again occurring. i find it hard to believe that my particular pacifica isn't experiencing the same issues that are part of the recall info that i was able to get online. i feel that chrysler is doing a disservice to it's customers by not taking care of this problem seeing as it appears to be a large scale problem from what i have been seeing online. *tr

I purchased this vehicle due to reports stating how safe it is. first problem will just stop running. there were no warnings or anything. it has done this on 8 times the first being two months after i purchased the vehicle. the dash board will just not turn on and the fog light indicator no longer comes on. the dealership replace something for a recall dealing with the gas tank and not my gas light continuously flashes on even though i have plenty of gas. the gas needle starts going up and down continuously then stops. this happens about twice a day. i feel i am stuck with a lemon because each time the dealer tells me that they can't find anything and to being it back if it acts up again. i have a very busy life.

I purchased the car from carmax 08/03, with 500 miles on it. at the end of 09/04, with 2200 miles, i began to have problems with the fuel light. i took it in for service for the fuel light on 10/6, 10/11, 12/18, and 12/27/04. each time service said it was due to a gas cap not being tightend, and or gas was being topped off. they didn't tell me they replaced a c34 fuel line clip on 12/18, and on 12/27 they replaced the egr system. i continued to have the same problems 1/11 and 1/17/05. on 1/17/05 they replaced a detector for general evap system failure/replace nvld pump. 1/25/05, service again for the headlamps not working, they found no problem. i was not told they did a recall on 10/06/04 on the auto transmission powertrain controle module. i found out, via the internet there was a recall on the headlamps, and they could go out anytime. i received another recall in the mail on the seat control module and drivers door handle, so i took the car in for both recalls 03/31/05. i got home that evening, and now i can't get into the car through the driver's side! this whole car is a lemon and should be recalled! *ak

 1. driving on tropicana ave going 30 mph when all the sudden i heard a knock sound and i started smelling fuel. i pulled over and inspected the vehicle an notices a small steel object sticking out of the gas tank and fuel was leaking all over the place. when i called the dealership i find out our warranty doesn't cover the repair, nor would they help in any way with a loaner car. all the money we spend to get slapped in the face with something that was in no way our fault. i figure any type of protection to the gas tank would have prevented this from happening, or even perhaps relocating the gas tank as it sits way to low to the ground as it is. *tr
