| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| The gear shift on the center console will not come out of park. i went out to start the car to go to work and the car would start up, but i couldn't shift out of park. i removed the trim to expose the quick release button and that didn't work either. after researching the issue, i've found that a lot of people with chrysler pacifica's have experienced this issue. i called a couple of dealerships and they had just received cars that very day with the same issue. i also learned that dodge's have been experiencing this same issue and a recall has been issued on them. i am writing so that this issue can be investigated further and a recall issued. | |||

| Vehicle gear shift stuck in park even though brake is depressed. tried rocking the vehicle back and forth to see if it was stuck in gear, no change. i conducted an internet search for this problem and found that several chrysler and dodge products have this exact same problem. cause: a small pink piece of plastic that has a spring attached to it, which is a gear locking mechanism, tends to break at about 40-60 thousand miles or sooner. there are no chrysler recalls for this item. the piece seems to cost about $2.00 for chrysler to make however, one will pay $300-$400 or more for the dealer to fix. takes minutes to replace if you know what you are doing. one can find the part online and replace with metal so that it will not break again for about $50. chrysler complaint line states that they will not fix unless nhtsb files a recall complaint. then i may get reimbursed for my cost. the pink plastic piece can break at any time leaving the driver stranded anywhere at any time, e.g. the drive thru., parking structure at night, etc.. | |||

| On april 13, 2011, while driving vehicle at approximately 10 mph and while making a left turn, vehicle suddenly stopped abruptly resulting in a vehicle stall. all electrical power was lossed, along with engine stalling. restarted vehicle and proceeded to drive again when it then suddenly started to drive rough for approximately a couple of seconds, as if it again wanted to stall, but didn;t. after this, the vehicle drove normal. took vehicle to pepboys on the same day and they diagnosed a 420 and a 700 fault code. on thursday april 14, 2011 took vehicle to alliance chrysler dealer in ft. worth, tx. i explained what had happened and mentioned that my vehicle experienced the same symptoms described in the pcm/fuel pump recall issued against 2006 pacificas. i also mentioned that this recall did not cover my vehicle whcih they confirmed. however, i raised concerns on whether the recall applicabililty needed to be expanded to cover other pacificas. the dealer has yet to figure out the problem besides telling me that they confirmed a 420 and 700 fault code which they stated would requie me to replace the catalytic converter and the transmisstion shifting solenoid. i questioned whether the sudden stall of the vehicle could have resulted in a misleading fault code. dealer technician mentioned that the stall could have been caused by a faulty transmission solenoid. i mentioned that my vehicle had showned no indication of a transmission problem with the gear shift. besides, if a faulty transmission shift solenoid is capable of causing a vehicle stall, then this vehicle has a serious design flaw since a stall while driving could result in serious injury or a catastrophic accident. dealer mentioned that mechanic was unable to replicate the failure and would continue to investigate the problem and get back to me. as of april 20, 2011, dealer has been unable to explained why the vehicle stalled. i suggested they perform the 2006 pcm/fuel pump recall fix. | |||

| On february 14, 2011 i was making a left turn at about 5 to 10 miles per hour when my 2006 chrysler pacific stopped. i was barely into the turn when the engine stopped. i had to put the car into park and restart the engine. this has been happening for probably 2 to 3 times a year. usually it happens when i make sharp left turns but this time it was not a sharp turn. i was very concerned this time because there was another car approaching and i was in the middle of the street. i had taken my vehicle into chrysler years ago for a recall and replacement of a part that was supposed to stop the stalling. but it is still occuring. not sure if it is electrical or fuel line or something else. | |||

| Car has stalled (engine cuts out completely) without any warning and while being driven at least 4 time. most recent was while merging onto freeway it just stopped, nearly causing fatal accident to my daughter who was driving at the time. complete shut down of car causes the steering wheel to lock with no means of getting to side of road. you're a sitting duck for a crash. fortunately, she got the car in park and restarted it. the car is at stevens creek chrysler dealership (towed there today). i am also in touch with chrysler corporation regarding this flaw and reparations that are due me from this lemon. the dealerships number is 408 248-1800. they are aware i am pursuing my options with this dangerous car and i really don't want it back even if they tell me they've fixed it. i don't trust this problem as it's rampant and cars are being recalled for this reason. it's a blessing my daughter wasn't killed from what this car did. | |||

| On the evening of monday, october 11, 2010, we dropped our car off at a local chrysler dealership. the purpose for this drop off was to determine why the abs light was on, and would not go off. the next morning we received a call from a service technician explaining that our computer module needed to be replaced, and that they had discovered an additional problem with the main wiring harness. the technician went on to explain that the main wiring harness had completely melted, and he could not understand why | |||

| Driving my car, no noticeable problems. i pulled into my driveway and i saw a lot of fluid on the driveway. i was extremely concerned, checked all my fluids which were ok. took the car to the dealer and they couldn't find a problem. i then started noticing the car riding rough and idling rough along with a 'banging when starting or stopping at redlights. took the car to the local mechanic who was not told anything about these issues (there for unrelated item) and was informed i have a bad motor mount. he asked if i noticed 3 specific items.. uh.. yah... all the things i told the dealer! waiting for him to check over the entire car right now to see if anything else is wrong. (problem with the heat and i think with my suspension). also, the heat will not stop blowing on the windshield (defrost) barely gives off heat to feet etc. got so hot it melted the plastic on the dashboard where the defrost emits from...dealer can not duplicate the problem but yet all i do is turn on the car, sit there 5 minutes and try to turn the heat to anywhere other than defrost and it's blatantly obvious as you can't breathe from the amount of hot air still blowing in your face off the windshield. currently have local mechanic looking at it. previous local mechanic found issue but wouldn't tear the dashboard apart to figure out how to fix it. recommended dealer as i have an extended warranty. dealer charged $88 dollars to look at car for all above issues and said nothing is wrong ... rather can not duplicate the problem. bull! | |||

| Loud ticking noise and rattling in the engine. 4th time since buying the pacifica i've had to take it in to get the same issue fixed. the noise sounds like the car is a truck. the issue is the valves, shafts and shaft head. i was also advised that if i were to continue to drive the pacifica, the engine could blow. this is a defect when they made this car. i know for a fact it's not the dealer i take it to b/c i've been to one in ga, one in orlando, fl and now in miami, fl. i knew what it was before i took it in and every single time chrysler looks at me like, just another women complaining b/c she doesn't like the sound. it's b/c i don't want my engine to blow in my face while driving. i am in tune with my pacifica and know that sound well. they have had to change the valve shafts each time and even a shaft head. i've owned the car brand new 12/2006, no miles, have had it service regularly like warranty states yet the problem keeps coming back. it has 58,900 miles on it so it shouldn't have this issue almost every year. last incident has been selected. previous incidents, every year since 2007. | |||
