Driving on expressway all the dashlights suddenly came on and the gauges started bouncing back and forth. all went back to normal for approx 10 mls and then started all over again, this time the engine died, after coming to a stop, turning everything off, it restarted. that was my first incident since then it has happened 3 more times in different driving situations.the mechanic can not reproduce the problem when he has it, and no codes are showing , do not feel very safe in vehicle any more

My wife and i obtained a 2006 pt cruiser from her father in 2008 with 12,980 miles on the odometer. in 4 years we've added about 12,000 miles. starting last winter, both while being driven at city speeds (30-45 mph) and while idling, this 2006 pt cruiser has periodically had a problem with the lights and gauges on the instrument panel. the needles all simultaneously switch back and forth rapidly, then go to the off position. the panel lights turn off at the same time, then after a few seconds to a few minutes, the panel returns to normal. prior to last friday, 10/12/2012, these incidents had not presented a danger or interfered with driving. however, on friday, my wife was driving the car in heavy traffic, and this time the panel went haywire as described before, but the car suddenly lost all engine power. the car would not respond to her pressing the accelerator, and she was forced to coast to a slow roll in the 40 mph traffic! then, the engine reengaged suddenly and the car surged forward when she wasn't expecting it. she refuses to drive it again. our local chrysler service tech seemed to be completely unfamiliar with this problem when i described it to him, and a call to chrysler corp llc proved useless. a cursory investigation online turns up dozens of this exact complaint over the past 5 or 6 years, and virtually all of them indicate a number of attempted solutions, including replacing the battery, the vacuum hoses, the wiring harness, the fuses, or the instrument cluster, and none of these apparently eliminate the problem. is this as common a complaint as it appears to be? if so, how can it be resolved? *tr

Owned this car approx. 3 months with problems from day 1. first week took in for 3 front end alignments, car always pulled to the right, problem never fixed. after one month when summer arrived no cold air, had to have evaporator replaced $1,000, car in shop for 2 weeks, air still not blowing cold. replaced low pressure switch, high end switch, pressure line, still no cold air, problem was never resolved. would idle real hard at stops. told it was a broken motor mount, replaced $150. car overheated, replaced thermostat, still overheating, could not figure out why...finally the turbo engine blew on the 3 month anniversary of owning this car. had to call bank to volunteer a surrender due to cost of replacing engine. car dealer was no help, just told me there was not a recall or warranty on this vehicle. called chrysler and was told it was dealers responsibility. wow, i will never own a chrysler again, this was the first and definitely the last! *tr

2006 pt cruiser. consumer writes in regards to crankshaft issues and vehicle repairs *tgw the consumer stated the vehicle was leaking oil and therefore, it was taken to the dealer on 03/13/12. the consumer was contacted at the end of the day and informed the crankshaft had ruined the engine block and needed a short block replacement at a cost of $4,000-5,000. the consumer had the same issue at 4,000 where the crankshaft had to be replaced due to a factory defect. chrysler approved the short block replacement, but the consumer had to pay a co-pay. the consumer received a call from the dealer on 03/21/12 and was informed the vehicle was ready to be picked up. however, upon arrival the next day, the only thing that was replaced, was the crankshaft, the dealer knew nothing about the replacement of the short block. the consumer was assured the block was not damaged, even though the consumer was told previously the block was damaged. *jb

I purchased a 2006 pt cruiser touring edition in september of 2010, less then one month later the car began pouring out oil. took to a mechanic who stated it was either the crank shaft or cam shaft seals. called the dealership where car was purchased and they said they would make the repairs. the car was returned wthin a week with a new head gasket, cam shaft seal and crank shaft seal and since it was right at 62,000 miles a new water pump and timing belt. 1 month later the car was again leaking oil. car is in shop currently, not sure what they have decided to do with the vehicle.

It appears that the crankshaft on 2006 pt cruisers does have a inherent built-in flaw that allows the crankshaft to move along its axis more than it should. after a while this causes the main crank seal to pop out and a significant oil leak to happen. it looks from reading over various forums that this problem occurs as early as 10,000 miles and is known by chrysler although not yet classified as a recall. this is a safety issue a a major oil leak whilst running can have major consequences for the user and others. in my case the problem was identified before an incident happens with the oil pressure reading abnormaly high but i understand this can happen unexpectedely.

Dear sir/madam: i have a 2006 chyrsler pt cruiser hatchback, and for the past year i have experienced complete shutdowns of the engine while driving. it happens unexpectedly, i have no warning and it is scary. i feel very unsafe in the car. i have brought the car to two different chrysler dealerships in florida, and both told me there was no problem. first of all, they obviously could not duplicate the problem, so i feel like they wrote it off as operator error. i don't care what their diagnosis computer said, there is a definite problem with the engine computer in my car. to shutdown unexpectedly, at anytime is totally unsafe and a serious safety risk to me and the traveling public. both my daughters have driven the car at separate times and experienced the same shutdowns. this is a liability issue that needs to be taken care and no one at chrysler will listen. please help me to get chrysler to understand this is a serious safety issue before someone gets killed. their dealerships do not seem to care. sincerely, clara johnson *tr

Starting around nov of 2006 while driving at any speed, the instrument cluster indicator lights turn on; all the gauges go dead i.e. the speedometer, the tachometer, the gas gauge all go to zero. the warning sounds beep constantly. the 2006 pt cruiser will lose power and/or severely hesitates, power steering will fail, the brakes will fail, i have had to use the hand brake one to many times to slow the car down. i have had several near misses with other vehicles on the roads. i curb the car twice, damaging my tires once, so as to not hit other drivers. this has been happening for over a year now. i have taking it massey-yardley where i bought the pt, to have looked at over a dozen maybe even more i have lost count, i have tried to lemon the car, chrysler stated that there is nothing wrong with the car because the dealership has not reproduce the problem. i have taking the pt to other dealerships with the same result. just recently i took the car in again to massey-yardley for poor gas mileage and the same power problem, this time with a check engine light active, in nov of 2007, the dealership said it was a bad instrument cluster and a bad oxygen sensor, which they replaced. i am still having the above stated problem, the dealership stated on nov 16 of 2007 they know something is wrong but since they cannot reproduce the error to trouble shoot it they will not fix it. the dealership also said since i'm not happy with the results i should go to another dealership to have it looked at! i'm going to do that but it's hard when you have to work! plus massey-yardley will not give me a statement to that fact of unknown defect in writing. *tr

New 2006 pt cruiser with 6700 miles started dripping oil at first, and then large puddles started to appear. took the car to dealer where after a day i was told that the main crank seal was leaking and both cam shaft seals were found to be wet with oil. dealer replaced crankshaft seal and cam seals. picked up the car and the following day the car started to leak puddles of oil again. car was returned to the dealer where the engine was torn down twice in attempt to find the leak a die was also added to the oil to try and locate the source of the leak. after one day i was offered a loaner vehicle and was told they found the source of the leak, the main crank seal was leaking again and they would have to order parts. the next day i was told while ordering the necessary parts a technical service bulletin (tsb) issued by chrysler was found and it stated a defect with the block was causing the crankshaft to walk back and forth crushing the seal. a new engine block was ordered and installed. *jb

I have a new 2006 chrysler pt cruiser limited. it has approx 4200 miles on it. last weekend it started heavily leaking oil from the front of the engine. the oil level was down almost 3 quarts when i discovered it, and still no indication on the dashboard. i took the car to town & country chrysler in levittown ny ,monday morning. tuesday they diagnose the main cam seal had burst. they believe it was caused by an incorrect bore size on the block. they will have to install a new engine block in the car. if the diagnoses is correct, engine blocks to my knowledge are not bored out by hand , but by robotics . therefore i am certain my isn't or won't be the only complaint..this might be a quality control issue. *jb

My wife has a 2006 pt cruiser. around 5/14/2009 it started sputtering when it is at an idle. the motor does fine when you are in motion. my wife was told the problem was the cooling system fan behind the radiator. this car has only 38,000 miles on it. if i 'm not mistaken a part like that should last longer and not break down as soon as the warranty runs out. i need to know if you have had any other problems with this part and what you are going to do to take care of it. *tr

I had bought a used 2006 pt cruiser. i had the car for 6 months when the front caliper broke, which caused my brakes to go out. i had an accident as a result of this. a few weeks after the accident i had problems with my car overheating, running out of oil and not having heat. when i took my car into the chrysler dealership to have this fixed, they told me that since my car had been in an accident that the warranty wouldn't cover my repairs and it would cost over 1000.00 to fix. the problems were: i had a hole in my radiator, i was missing the connectors to hold the radiator in place, i had no heat, i needed new spark plugs, and the oil light was coming on. they had told me that i had no oil or coolant in my car and that they would have to get the car in running condition to find out where the oil leak was. i couldn't afford to fix my car, so i took it to a family friends auto shop. i had the radiator repaired, the connectors and had coolant put in. i then picked it back up to take it back to chrysler to have the oil leak fixed. after they looked at it, they told me that since i didn't have my car fixed with them, they wouldn't even look to find out what the problem is. they didn't want to deal with a car that they didn't fix. i did find out what the real problem is through the family shop. i have a cracked head gasket, and the oil leak. i have only had this car for 8 months, and i have only put on 12000 miles. the car has a total of 27,000 miles today. these sort of things shouldn't be happening to my car. *tr

Total engine failure - 2006 chrysler pt cruiser convertible. i was driving to work and the oil light came on. the oil light immediately went off but then came back on again over and over and over. i was within 300 miles of needing my second oil change. i drove it to the dealership thinking it may be a computer glitch. when i got to the dealership there was no oil in the engine. when you see three mechanics looking under the hood and holding their hands up with looks of dismay on their faces......that is not a good thing. after diagnostic tests, the dealership found that there was 1/8th of an inch of end play in the engine and the rear main seal blew. the car had to have a total engine replacement because more than 70% of the engine was ruined. the car was covered with oil top to bottom on the outside (paint and convertible top) for weeks while this engine was replaced. after the engine was replaced the car seemed to have more problems and the dealership picked it up on rollback and after analysis said nothing was wrong with the car. *nm

The horn is hard to locate and blow. terrible fuel mileage - 4 cyl car only gets 16 mpg and eats gas badly. anyway i am currently fighting chrysler corporation because of their manufacturing error they put the wrong engine in my new 2006 pt cruiser convertible - touring edition. chrysler's book, brochures etc. clearly state that nothing but a standard 2.4l 180hp turbo engine is to go in this car and chrysler put a regular (non-turbo) engine in this car. chrysler lies and says that the downgraded non-turbo engine is an option. but there is no optional engine available for this car and another engine is not supposed to go in the car. chrysler refuses to give me the correct car that i am currently paying for etc. chrysler corp. continue to lie and give customers a very hard time. *nm

Car horn hard to locate and blow. very low fuel mileage - only get 16 mpg on a 2.4l non-turbo engine-eats gas badly. sometimes seems like the engine wants to stall. have complained to dealership and chrysler corporation - but mainly because chrysler manufacturers put a non-turbo engine in my 2006 pt cruiser conv. touring when only a turbo engine is to be in this car. chrysler refuses to give me the correct car and take this manufacturing error car back. they are lying and saying that the 150 hp(non-turbo) engine is an option engine. there is no other engine as an option for this car - i have their book and other documents. i am currently seeking help to get the correct car with the turbo engine i am paying for. chrysler does not care and gives their customer a hard time. *nm
