POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
02/13/2008 | 116000 | 1 | |
Transmission started shifting really rough around 116,000. previous owner replaced the transmission. when they sold it to us at around 150,000, the transmission started shifting hard again. now at 169,000 it shifts back and forth between 2nd and 3rd gears and is very rough. when shifting into reverse, it clunks. this is after we even took it in and had transmission fixed. no good. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1994 chrysler town and country. the sliding door is currently being held onto the vehicle by one out of three hinges. the door has to be pushed very hard in order for it to close. in addition, the rear wiper does not work and the motor needs to be replaced. the contact has decided not to repair the vehicle. when he places the vehicle into drive, it takes a while to shift. the vehicle makes a thumping sound when it does shift into gear. the air conditioner has not worked since the vehicle was purchased. the all wheel drive makes a clunking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. on a hot day, the gears skip as if they are not gripping properly in the rear of the vehicle. the current mileage was 135,000 and failure mileage was 116,000.

Transmission exhibited many converter shudder / lockup symptoms at highway speed; also extreme harshness / banging when shifting into gear prior to a total failure on a heavily traveled 2-lane rural road. an extreme hazard was created for occupants and other motorists.*ak

Sudden downshift/deceleration -transmission locked in 2nd gear - total transmission failure requiring $1500 rebuild. still exhibits delayed shifting and sometimes poor acceleration due to delayed downshifts. chrysler's only comment... they consider me irresponsible for not having bought the extended warranty offered by the dealer at purchase. The re-build was not done by a chrysler dealer due to the original dealers extreme rudeness on another matter regarding re-painting the front bumper. we felt if they were that rude about a $300 re-paint under warranty (which another dealer did take care of) they how could we trust them to help us with a major transmission problem? we basically just want to buy a new town & country with an extended warranty at no additional charge. we think this is fair due to the transmission going out twice in six years. this transmission is known to be a problem child. we just didn't know that at the time. it's a hindsight 20/20 thing. have asked our dealer to put something together for us with the extended warranty at no charge but are not getting anywhere. i think it's fair to ask. i would not purchase the vehicle without the added protection. i don't trust chrysler's product enough for that. i do enjoy the amenities it offers. it's difficult to find a mini-van with the comfort it offers. *ak

Transmission shifts too low, and will not up shift until i run of engine and restart. this happended 1/10/2000 at 50mph, and almost caused the car behind me to hit me. this caused the engine to red line for a second. *ak

Vehicle gave no indication of a transmission problem and then one day just stopped functioning at all. when purchased the warranty offered was either the 3/36 or the 12/12 & 7/70. we chose 3/36 which was benificial at one point since we had continuous problems with the computer system in the vehicle and it took almost a year for them to finally take care of that problem..my concern is do we have any options other with any pending issues due to the history of the minivan transmissions? are the any avenues we can take so as not to have to pay the 2,500 to fix the transmission?

Vehicle has a violent shake in the front drive train beginning at approximately 30 mph and ending about 40 mph. the shaking returns at approximately 70 mph. between these speeds, the shaking is present but not as violent. this problem has existed since the vehicle was purchased new in 1994 but has progressively gotten worse with age and milage. it is now to the point that the entire vehilce shakes. the vehicle has been worked by the original dealer who is no longer in business as well as other chrysler dealerships with no solution to the problem. i have contacted chrysler corp. for advise and assistance in identifying the problem several times but neither they nor the dealerships nor the factory representatives have been able or willing to identify the source of the problem. whatever repairs have been suggested by chrysler have been done either under warranty or at my expense. nothing has corrected the problem. the problem continues to get worse and is getting to the point of becoming a real safety concern. i would welcome any information which may be helpful in identifying and solving this problem. *ak
