| On a few seperate occasions while driving my 1996 chrysler town and country my daughters seatbelt has just released without any warning. during 3 sudden stops the seatbelts have unlatched by themselves and one time while driving down the road my seatbelt came undone after i adjusted myself in my seat. we just bought this van 2 months ago. also, without warning the body control module took out my entire electrical system, including my radio. there should be a sensor that it is going bad before it actually goes. even after going to jack powell dodge to have it all fixed, the horn doesn't work , the stereo is messing up, the instrument cluster is messing up, and the windshield wipers don't seem to work properly. | |||

| Entire vehicle electrical system shuts down without warning while driving, causing loss of engine power, power steering, and power brakes. this is extraordinarily dangerous during any but the slowest, straight ahead driving, as it results in a nearly complete loss of maneuverability. in the event of such a complete shutdown the vehicle cannot be effectively accelerated, braked, or turned, and lights and windshield wipers also fail. furthermore, the windshield wiper delay malfunctions continuously in cold weather, resulting in complete loss of wiper function at times. multiple attempts at diagnosis and repair, including some parts replacement by the dealer, have failed to eliminate any of the aforementioned problems. | |||

| Soon after starting the car, the passenger power seat motor began to spontaneously smoke, emitting a putrid odor. after traveling approximately 2 miles (10 min in traffic) the smoke increased to the point that the whole compartment of the vehicle was filled. at that point the vehicle was parked and the engine was shut off. all passengers (two mothers and four children 3 or younger) evacuated the vehicle. the smoke continued to worsen and ultimately the fire department was notified. a fire extinguisher was used and after about twenty minutes all smoke stopped. the manufacturer was notified and recently claimed they had no responsibility or liability in the matter. *jb | |||

| 1996 chrysler town & country lxi mini-van parked at an off-airport parking lot was totalled due to a fire originating in the engine compartment. the vehicle was parked at approx 8:00 am. at approx. 1:00 am the following morning, parking attendants noticed vehicle on fire. fire department called, responded and extinguished the fire by approx 3:00 am. fire department foreman responding says fire originated in the engine compartment and suspected that it started from a engine compartment fuse box near the battery. vehicle deemed a complete loss due to the extent of the fire. | |||

| Ref. 727308 vehicle shuts down, pcm affected by radar interference is possible culprit. after new filters and plugs the engine was able to stay running but it shutters when radar interference is encountered, only fix is to replace pcm with rebuilt, probably will re-occur in future. this is a known problem and should get a recall. when vehicle dies it is very hard to handle, due to weight on the front of these vans. | |||

| This van has been nothing but a failure since i bought it. i have kept up the oil changes and maintenance as needed. the paint is coming of off the grill and the paint on the rest of the van is not holding up. i have replaced: timing belt 3 times power steering pump once the thermostat twice the relay switch three times and it still does not work the relay on the motor once the air conditioning is failing in the front the rear door lock on the passenger side doesn't work my transmission is going out very soon i am a single parent in a large metroplex. i need my car to get to work. i cannot afford to buy another car now. | |||

| The electrical gauges and digital readout have repeatedly failed (7 times) resulting in no way to know speed/mph the vehicle is traveling, whether engine is overheating, gear that the transmission is in, car alarm does not function, all gauges are either giving faulty readings or no readings at all. this is only the most often repeated problem. additionally, there have been numerous and different problems resulting in overheating, 3 battery replacements, premature replacement of brakes and wheel cylinder, numerous other problems. vehicle currently not functioning due to 7th. failure of electrical gauge panel, lights staying on causing battery drain and failure. useless to recharge the battery because continuous burning of dash panel lights will continue to drain battery. no car alarm because of computer failure.ehicle *ak | |||

| Vehicle vibrating above 45 mph chrysler said it was the tires, michelin said it was the vehicle. we got 25%off the cost of new tires on 02/04/99 under a low speed wobble service bullitin notice. transmission is a joke. have had vehicle in time after time since 11/14/99 for incomplete work , tools left on the engine!! transmission fluid and radiator fluid leaking the day after picking up the van. we asked the dealership to check items that another auto shop checked and said needed fixed under the warranty and the dealership told us the other shop didn't know anything that they weren't a dealership! after putting the motor back together, one of the asked to fix components was broken after all and had to be fixed. we are still experiencing problems with hick-upping while at a stop also a wanting to stall and holding back feeling. this has to do with the coil pack (we feel0 , that we have asked them to check and looking at the forms received back, it hasn't been. i have asked repeatedly for my copies of the work needing to be done sheets, and have yet to receive them. i have made complaint to the manufacturer and have asked for the regional manager to contact me, but that hasn't happened yet. this was done on approx. 02/08/00, today is 02-25-00. *ak( dot number: tire size: 21565t16mn ) | |||

| Engine cuts out after long trips (200 miles at highway speeds). appears as though the engine doesn't get fuel. after engine cools (20-30 minutes) the car starts again. have had $700 worth of repairs at the dealer to fix fuel line, spark plug wires, etc. the dealer called detriot to diagnose via modem. they suggested replacing crank position sensor. it was replaced and problem continues. this is very dangerous because it occurs on the interstate at highway speeds without warning. we have been on the side of the road at all hours of the night with trucks hurtling past us. the dealer keeps guesing what is wrong without any firm commitment that the next fix is the right one. they want to replace the fuel pump next and the electronic control unit next if that isn't the problem. that is another $900 without any true knowledge what the problem is. i heard the motorman radio talk show january 9 0r 10 and a caller complained about the very same problem. the motorman said this was common with chrysler mini-vans and that it is the electronic control module that overheats and cuts the signal to the spark plugs. please check into this because it is a danger to motorists. *ak | |||

| I have already filed a verbal report on the phone, however my van that we purchased new caught fire on sept. 19. 2000. i, e. amanda harris wasthe primary operator of the vehicle. i just wanted to add some additonal info. to the original report. we had always taken the car to be serviced and at one such time i complained to the dealer that whenever i filled the van up with gas i smelled gas fumes inside of the van as if something was leaking. they returned the van indicating nothing was wrong. during the first 30 days after i purchased the vehicle one of the sealent rings fell off and the transmission fluid poured out. i was stranded dangerously on the side on the road during rush hour traffic with five children. we used the van for family travel also. on the day of the event it was the grace of god that the vehicle didn't blow up with my children in the vehicle. many times they would have been sleeping. we purchased this vehicle because we thought is was safe, only to find out it wasn't. worse yet i cannot afford to purchase another vehicle yet and we are struggling with one 4 dr sedan until we can afford to do better. i cringe when i see any van these days, especially chrysler, dodge or plymouth. i'm grateful i'm alive. *ak | |||

| The electrical gauges and digital readout have repeatedly failed (7 times) resulting in no way to know speed/mph the vehicle is traveling, whether engine is overheating, gear that the transmission is in, car alarm does not function, all gauges are either giving faulty readings or no readings at all. this is only the most often repeated problem. additionally, there have been numerous and different problems resulting in overheating, 3 battery replacements, premature replacement of brakes and wheel cylinder, numerous other problems. vehicle currently not functioning due to 7th. failure of electrical gauge panel, lights staying on causing battery drain and failure. useless to recharge the battery because continuous burning of dash panel lights will continue to drain battery. no car alarm because of computer failure.ehicle *ak | |||

| Multi-function switch controls the wipers and turn signals. the malfunction causse the windshield wipers to come on occasionally when the turn signals are used. usually after the turn is completed surprising the driver and causing a loss of attention by the driver as to what is happening. the manufacturer is aware of the problem but has not chsen to fix the problem until the consumer brings the vehicle in for repair. the manufacturer is aware that they have installed a faulty part as evidenced by the nhsta service bulletin number: 08-36-95reva, but will not replace the faulty part at no expense to the owner. | |||
