The serpentine belt on our 1996 chrysler town & country lxi, makes a horrible screeching sound, that we've almost come to appreciate, when faced with it's alternative silence, when the serpentine belt gets wet & slips off. the immediate & dangerous result is loss of power steering, leaving the driver surprised with their inability to safely maneuver the van. within less than a minute, a fast hazard bell sounds & the engine temperature sensor is pinned at hot. if the driver is quick, strong, & lucky enough, to get the family safely off the road, before the water pump fries, stalling the van in traffic, they are now left stranded. we've had the serpentine belt & tensioner pulley replaced twice, the last time at chrysler, and still the problem has not been corrected. we've checked for recalls but chrysler states that this is not a life threatening failure, so no recall has been made. this has happens to us often enough that we keep a wrench in our van, so my husband can attempt to retrieve & re-seat the belt onto the tensioner, in the pouring rain. we've read many complaints about this same problem & can't understand why chrysler doesn't think loss of steering & sudden heat pump failure is not life threatening. if one of their ceos were to find themselves struggling their family van quickly off the road, standing over, or even lying under their engine, in the pouring rain, while the rest of the family hopes that he isn't injured making the repair, hit by lightening, or by a distracted driver, perhaps they would recall this system. we've spent a lot of time & money on repairs, & have come across an off-market product designed to fix this specific, widely recognized chrysler product issue, and just purchased it. we find it disgusting to see that the possibility of this problem being addressed may depend on the number of deaths, or persons injured, before chrysler takes any responsibility. they could at least acquire or cover the cost of the off-market repair kit. *tr | |||

The serpentine belt came off our chrysler town & country in a driving rain storm. we were stranded in charlotte, north carolina 70 miles from home until after midnight when a friend came and drove us home. we left our van in a parking lot overnight. we are hoping that it is not vandalized or stolen when we go today to repair it. when this belt comes off, power steering is gone, which can cause an accident leading to serious injury or death. this is a common problem that all automobile mechanics and chrysler van owners know about, but chrysler refuses to acknowledge the problem. the fix is an aftermarket parts kit by gates (part number 38379k) and goodyear (parts number 49215k) that the consumer must bear the entire expense of installing. *tr | |||

This van has been nothing but a failure since i bought it. i have kept up the oil changes and maintenance as needed. the paint is coming of off the grill and the paint on the rest of the van is not holding up. i have replaced: timing belt 3 times power steering pump once the thermostat twice the relay switch three times and it still does not work the relay on the motor once the air conditioning is failing in the front the rear door lock on the passenger side doesn't work my transmission is going out very soon i am a single parent in a large metroplex. i need my car to get to work. i cannot afford to buy another car now. | |||

The serpentine belt on my 1996 chrysler town & country lxi, makes a loud squeal and then falls off a week later. when driving in rain and going over a puddle the serpentine belt falls off this has happened so many times that i have installed brackets one by the tensioner and one by the pulley. the immediate & dangerous result is loss of power steering and power brakes next is water pump fails causing engine to over heat so unless you have a spare belt in your van at the time and the tools to change it you are let stranded. *tr | |||

The electrical gauges and digital readout have repeatedly failed (7 times) resulting in no way to know speed/mph the vehicle is traveling, whether engine is overheating, gear that the transmission is in, car alarm does not function, all gauges are either giving faulty readings or no readings at all. this is only the most often repeated problem. additionally, there have been numerous and different problems resulting in overheating, 3 battery replacements, premature replacement of brakes and wheel cylinder, numerous other problems. vehicle currently not functioning due to 7th. failure of electrical gauge panel, lights staying on causing battery drain and failure. useless to recharge the battery because continuous burning of dash panel lights will continue to drain battery. no car alarm because of computer failure.ehicle *ak | |||

We have had to have the whole transmission rebuilt and/or replaced in nov. we also had to take our vehicle bach within 1 week to have more trans. work done even after it was replaced. now it back in the shop for a water pump leak and a thermostat, along with replacement of the lines to the cooling system because they are cracked, along with another round with the belt and tensioner that we had replaced in april of 2000. we also have had the electrical rely replaced 2 times and we are wondering if we will have to replace it again after a year of use. we are so fed up with this vehicle right now that you can not even imagine. for the past 4 months it has set in our drive way because we are afraid to drive it..... we are now wondering when it is driven what is going to happen to it next. we are not to happy with having to put all this money in a vehicle that is 5 years old and 62k miles. we have all the service records on this vehicle if you need them. please respond to this complaint and investigate the problems futher. as it looks there are lots of people that have complained about the same problems as i have. | |||

Vehicle vibrating above 45 mph chrysler said it was the tires, michelin said it was the vehicle. we got 25%off the cost of new tires on 02/04/99 under a low speed wobble service bullitin notice. transmission is a joke. have had vehicle in time after time since 11/14/99 for incomplete work , tools left on the engine!! transmission fluid and radiator fluid leaking the day after picking up the van. we asked the dealership to check items that another auto shop checked and said needed fixed under the warranty and the dealership told us the other shop didn't know anything that they weren't a dealership! after putting the motor back together, one of the asked to fix components was broken after all and had to be fixed. we are still experiencing problems with hick-upping while at a stop also a wanting to stall and holding back feeling. this has to do with the coil pack (we feel0 , that we have asked them to check and looking at the forms received back, it hasn't been. i have asked repeatedly for my copies of the work needing to be done sheets, and have yet to receive them. i have made complaint to the manufacturer and have asked for the regional manager to contact me, but that hasn't happened yet. this was done on approx. 02/08/00, today is 02-25-00. *ak( dot number: tire size: 21565t16mn ) | |||

I am disabled secondary to multiple sclerosis but an still actively employed as a physician. i was thrilled to purchase a vehicle through chrysler that was adapted by braun corporation with a lowered floor, entervan ramp and hand controls. from the first 6800 miles, i have had repeated problems. in the past year and a half, i have been stranded in my vehicle in my wheelchair and the van has required towing. i was prompted to reach out to you for help because the first problem (at 6800 miles) recurred now at 40,000 miles. my brakes failed entirely without warning and i was travelling at 40mph. chrysler points the finger at braun and quality coach (the distributor locally). they point the finger at chrysler. chrysler said that in 1996, braun cahnged the location of the fuel pump and this required customization of the line between the brake pump and the master cylinder. this custmized line has worn through twice (the first time at 6800 miles) with no warning. i was assured then that the problem was corrected but found out at 40mph that my brakes were gone again. i had gotten the van serviced at the dealer 6 weeks prior to this and new front brakes were installed. i also had it in 12 weeks prior to this incident to have all the conversion equipment checked. needless to say, no assurances from them that they have corrected the problem will convince me to drive this van and i do not, in good conscience, want to pass this problem on to another innocent person. please advise and help if you can! | |||

The engine uses a single serpentine belt for all engine-driven accessories. the idler pulley has failed twice, each time breaking its shaft off and falling into the engine cradle and causing a horrible racket as the crankshaft pulley continues to spin against the fallen idler pulley. the belt, of course, is thrown off and all accessories cease to operate. the items that will no longer operate are: air conditioning compressor, engine coolant pump, alternator, and power steering pump. both times, the failure has occurred at relatively low vehicle speeds, but it is very upsetting with the noise and sudden heavy steering effort. my wife was driving at the time of the second failure and was happy to escape having an accident. a similar problem apparently occurred in range rover vehicles since a recall of virtually identical circumstance was issued on their 1995 4.0se vehicle. *mjs | |||

Engine cuts out after long trips (200 miles at highway speeds). appears as though the engine doesn't get fuel. after engine cools (20-30 minutes) the car starts again. have had $700 worth of repairs at the dealer to fix fuel line, spark plug wires, etc. the dealer called detriot to diagnose via modem. they suggested replacing crank position sensor. it was replaced and problem continues. this is very dangerous because it occurs on the interstate at highway speeds without warning. we have been on the side of the road at all hours of the night with trucks hurtling past us. the dealer keeps guesing what is wrong without any firm commitment that the next fix is the right one. they want to replace the fuel pump next and the electronic control unit next if that isn't the problem. that is another $900 without any true knowledge what the problem is. i heard the motorman radio talk show january 9 0r 10 and a caller complained about the very same problem. the motorman said this was common with chrysler mini-vans and that it is the electronic control module that overheats and cuts the signal to the spark plugs. please check into this because it is a danger to motorists. *ak | |||

1996 chrysler t&c minivan with 78,000 miles, being operated by wife, broke down in heavy rush hour traffic with kids onboard. the serpentine belt broke due to faulty belt tensioner. the belt had been replaced only two months previously as part of preventative maintenance schedule (just to avoid exactly what happed). mechanic indicated that chrysler t&c tensioners were prone to premature failure causing shredding of the serpentine belt. belt affects power steering, cooling fan, charging system, etc. wife, who weighs in at 95 lbs, lost all steering ability and was left stranded in middle of rush hour traffic with two kids until good samaritan arrived and 'manhandled' van off the roadway. | |||

For the second time in a year or so the tensioner on the engine's serpentine belt broke, cuasing the loss of engine cooling, alternator, air conditioning and, most importantly, power steering. with no power the car is extremely hard to steer. both times this item failed i was driving; if my wife had been driving she could not have steered the vehicle -- the effort required is too much. both failures were at low speed; had it been in traffic requiring steering, this might well have led to accidents. the tensioner bolt (integral with the tensioner) breaks because there is a great deal of shear pressure on it. it does not appear to be of high enough quality for this application. i believe it should be replaced with a stronger bolt. i am considering whether my wife should continue driving this car; i consider it dangerous. *ak | |||
