I am disabled secondary to multiple sclerosis but an still actively employed as a physician. i was thrilled to purchase a vehicle through chrysler that was adapted by braun corporation with a lowered floor, entervan ramp and hand controls. from the first 6800 miles, i have had repeated problems. in the past year and a half, i have been stranded in my vehicle in my wheelchair and the van has required towing. i was prompted to reach out to you for help because the first problem (at 6800 miles) recurred now at 40,000 miles. my brakes failed entirely without warning and i was travelling at 40mph. chrysler points the finger at braun and quality coach (the distributor locally). they point the finger at chrysler. chrysler said that in 1996, braun cahnged the location of the fuel pump and this required customization of the line between the brake pump and the master cylinder. this custmized line has worn through twice (the first time at 6800 miles) with no warning. i was assured then that the problem was corrected but found out at 40mph that my brakes were gone again. i had gotten the van serviced at the dealer 6 weeks prior to this and new front brakes were installed. i also had it in 12 weeks prior to this incident to have all the conversion equipment checked. needless to say, no assurances from them that they have corrected the problem will convince me to drive this van and i do not, in good conscience, want to pass this problem on to another innocent person. please advise and help if you can!

The engine stalls with no warning, usually when slowing or coming to a stop, but it has happened a few times at speeds up to 45 mph. after the engine stalls, it will sometimes not start unless i race the engine to keep it going. the dealer cannot duplicate this problem. we have paid to have the throttle body cleaned and to have the fuel filter replaced, but the problem continues. since vehicle has power steering and brakes, these do not function during an engine stall, and i am concerned that this could eventually produce a collision. *ak

Engine cuts out after long trips (200 miles at highway speeds). appears as though the engine doesn't get fuel. after engine cools (20-30 minutes) the car starts again. have had $700 worth of repairs at the dealer to fix fuel line, spark plug wires, etc. the dealer called detriot to diagnose via modem. they suggested replacing crank position sensor. it was replaced and problem continues. this is very dangerous because it occurs on the interstate at highway speeds without warning. we have been on the side of the road at all hours of the night with trucks hurtling past us. the dealer keeps guesing what is wrong without any firm commitment that the next fix is the right one. they want to replace the fuel pump next and the electronic control unit next if that isn't the problem. that is another $900 without any true knowledge what the problem is. i heard the motorman radio talk show january 9 0r 10 and a caller complained about the very same problem. the motorman said this was common with chrysler mini-vans and that it is the electronic control module that overheats and cuts the signal to the spark plugs. please check into this because it is a danger to motorists. *ak

Fuel rail - nhtsa campaign id # 00v268000. dealer does not show record of this recall, nor does diamler chrysler recall line (800) 853-1403. fuel is leaking onto the engine block from crack(s) in the fuel rail. dealer will not repair free of charge, will charge full repair costs. jack extension - the jack that comes with the minivan has a small extendor piece that fits into the jack then into the designated place on the frame in order to jack the car up. when i jacked up the van using these pieces, the van slipped off the jack/extension piece, damaging the running board (and narrowly missing my head!). it appears there is supposed to be a cotter pin to hold the extension piece onto the jack, but this was not included.

On 11/14 or 15/2001 i noticed the smell of gasoline from the engine compartment of my car. it was stronger when i opened my hood. i called a mechanic to my house to diagnose the problem. he determined that the fuel rails were leaking. i determined that such a problem afflicted other 1996 town and country vehicles. i contacted my local chrysler dealer who would only state that my vehicle had no outstanding recalls. when i specifically mentioned recall 00v268000 they refused to confirm such a problem or recall existed. i then called chrysler customer service. they too told me that no recall was outstanding on my vehicle. they also refused to confirm that such a problem existed on 1996 chrysler town and country vehicles, but also told me that just because it was on nhtsa's web page doesn't mean it's a recall. both the dealer and chrysler refused to provide any help with this repair or any information. *ak

There was fuel leaking in a drizzle out of the end of the front of the fule rail assembly onto the valve cover where it accumulates into a puddle of gas on the valve cover lip then spilled onto the exhaust header. it is certainly is a major fire hazard. could have burned my house down. it did not catch on fire in my case by pure luck. it appears to leak at a crack in the joint on the fuel rail at a point where the metel fuel line between the front and back of the fuel rail assemply meet in the front and enters the fuel injection rail assembly in the front of the engine. chrysler dealer states this is not part of any recall, yet other recall exist for the same year and engine and they have been recalled. i have received no notices on this issue for recall. if this problem recalled and is their a reference please let me know. if not this is very dangerous. thank you.

The o-rings in my fuel rail have failed, causing me to have to replace the entire fuel rail at a cost of $542. this van is only 5 years old and this should not have ever happend on a vehicle this new. i called chrysler who says they do not have recall for this. this is unacceptable. chrysler needs to issue a recall for this, before someone is hurt or killed. fact is the resulting gas leak could have easily killed myself and my three young children. i thought town and courtney's were supposed to be the safest vehicle around. maybe i was wrong?

I wasn't involved in an accident. the van could have burned up though if i hadn't caught the problem of gas leaking onto the hot exhaust system. the defect was not immediately noticeable, it didn't cause obvious engine or operating difficulties and there were no warnings of fuel leaking from the on board trouble warning system. i caught the problem when i drove into my attached garage, turned off the engine and got out of the van.. i smelled gas, backed the van out of the garage, raised the hood with the engine running and observed the raw gas pouring out of two places on the engine. as it was the labor day weekend i left the van outside and used our other car. i'm a realtor with century 21 and an associate in our office had his dodge mini-van catch fire and burn up last year and now i wonder if this isn't a common problem with this series chrysler products. my home could have burned to the ground had i not obseved the gas smell and got the van out of the garage. had we been asleep in the house my wife and i could have both been burned to death. even if we were just driving and happened to be involved in an accident the van would be more likely to catch fire from the leaking gas and we might have been trapped in it. we're both in our 70's. the repairs cost $221.47 and because there seems to be a demand for the replacement fuel rail & injector o-rings it took the dealer several days to get the parts from chrysler. does this not suggest there's a problem*ak

Chrysler says they are covering some of it's 1996 vans and claim we are not covered. dealer concurred that our van was having the same problems as the potential recall is describing. we can't believe that selective coverage within the same year is logical since our van is having the same problems. to summarize the problem: fuel leaks(streams) from the rail just above the manifold through the engine. thank god we realized the problem before a fire broke out. does it take a death before companies are liable?*ak

I have a 1996 chrysler town and country with the 3.8l engine that has had the fuel rail recall done. the recall involved putting a clamp type seal around the fuel rail in two places. these seals have both failed and fuel is actually dripping from one of the seals. i have taken the van to the local dealer for repairs i have not heard yet what they will do to resolve this. my concern is that the repair provided by the recall is not sufficient and will fail again in a short time. this is of grave concern to me for the safety of my family. it appears that a poor design is being repaired by an equally poor fix. *nm

There is fuel leaking in a drizzle out of the end of the front fuel injection crossover tube/ injection rail assembly onto the valve cover where it accumulates into a puddle of gas on the valve cover. lip then spills onto the exhaust header. huge huge fire hazard. this must be recalled. called my chrysler dealer and they say there is no known recall on this and would not honor a fix for this problem. how many lives and vehicles must be lost before someone forces chrysler to recall and fix this. this will be the last chrysler i own. *nlm **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*753523

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE - TANK ASSEMBLY

Last week, 17 aug 05, i had to replace the fuel tank on my '96 chrysler t&c (vin 1c4gp64l8tb146902) due to a fatigue crack that was spilling fuel. chrysler has refused to accept any responsibility since my vehicle is out of warranty. are there any requirements regarding the longevity and performance of plastic fuel tanks? other than the obvious safety concerns, the replacement cost exceeded $800. at the time of failure my vehicle had 180,885 original miles and has been meticulously maintained. the location of the crack (top, front, left corner) precludes any accidental impact of the undercarriage. according to the servicing dealer, hayes chrysler, lawrenceville, ga, the defective tank was destroyed per environmental requirements. please advise if there is a course of action i can take to ameliorate this problem. *jb

The vin for this vehicle is: 1c4gp54r9tb326968 car suffered fuel line breakage after driving through a large puddle. was towed to o'hara chrysler-plymouth dealer(clinton, mi) for repairs, which the fuel line damage was determined. inquired with the service rep, jake, as to why since owning the vehicle. the maximum tank fill-up was 13.0 - 13.4 gallons, whereas the service manual states 18 gallons. jake stated that there was a tendency of the tank to bow-in, that would either reduce the fuel sensor accuracy or reduce the volume. a new tank carried a different part number than the original. since this vehicle was assembled on january 11, 1996 and there is a nhtsa technical service bulletin #140895 issued on january 1, 1996. am i covered by this and was i charged for a known defect? i had brought the tsb number to the service manager chris, who indicated that the tsb number was something he was not familiar with and did not meet d-c recall three digit numbers. *nlm

Fuel leaking from gas tank. took vehicle to chrysler dealer to be checked. was advised that fuel tank was leaking at a seam. this vehicle had an earlier recall concerning fuel leaking where the fuel pump was mounted to the tank. repairs were made according to the recall. it seems that a fuel tank should not just start leaking for no apparent reason (there was no physical damage to the fuel tank). the tank is to be replaced by the local chrysler dealer for a sum of $700 plus. this is a very serious safety issue in which a fire could easily occur. if this is a common occurence, it should be taken care of by the chrysler corporation. thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

The fuel tank senser is not operating correctly. i experienced symptoms that suggested i had run out of gas with the gas gauge reading 1/4 tank and the distance to empty reading on the internal computer at 76 miles. i pulled into a gas station and was able to put in 20.5 gallons of gas. the tank capacity is listed at 20 gallons. i monitored the gas consumption over the next tank. i drove 330 miles and the gauge read between 1/4 and 3/8 of a tank and the distance to empty reading was 106 miles. i was able to put in 17.7 gallons which indicates about 2.3 gallons were remaining in the tank. that is no where near 1/4 or 3/8 of a tank. i understand that some 1996 jeeps were recalled for a similar defect. it may be possible that the jeep and chrysler products share some of the same componants. this is the third gas tank that the van has had. the first tank was replaced due to a faulty sensor which always showed much less gas remaining than was actually in the tank. that tank was replaced. the next tank leaked and also was replaced. the latest tank now appears to show much more gas remaining than is actually in the tank. i have informed my local chrysler dealer. they inspected the external wiring of the sensor and said it looked normal. my comments have been noted in the vehicle maintainence records. however, i was informed that any sensor problem will require disassembly of the gas tank.
