Why is there no recall for the transmission problems with so many complaints? we cannot get it to go at a stop sign or turning a corner, which is very dangerous, and have seen numerous other complaints of this nature. the windshield wipers still go on intermitantly surprising the driver.

I purchased a 1996 chrysler town & country lxi from a used car lot "as is".the vehicle had supposedly had a 29 point service inspection.the next day i had the transmission checked due to leaking fluid from the front seal.the differential pin was broken with aluminum shavings in the pan and the filter was laying there loose.it appears that the previous owner had transmission service performed, saw the shavings and parked the van until it could be traded in.there was a light rust cover on the brake rotors to indicate it had been parked.i caught it just in time before the pin broke thru the aluminum case which would have cost an additional $500.00.the aamco dealer has so many of these vehicles with the same problem that they have a broken one on display in their showroom.the mechanic showed me how easy it would be to prevent this problem by getting the proper lubrication to the pin.the modifications he makes to do just that are the reason they can offer a lifetime warranty on the repairs.chrysler could do the same if they were interested in preventing this problem but the lure of the parts sales must be a better payoff.

Intermittent loss of speed. transmission stucks at lower gear. vehicle runs fine for a while and suddenly jumps to lower gear, bringing the van to a sudden low speed. luckly escaped from a major accident while overtaking a truck on highway at the speed of 70miles/hr. showed the vehicle to chrysler dealer. they just kept the van for long time and replace a piece of wire and said its good to go. but problem came back again after a week. now they say all wiring has to be replaced which could cost me like $1700 to $1800. i'm the second owner and i take good care of this van, changing fluids, filters & stuff. if this is engineering mistake by chrysler with their transmisson, then shouldn\'t they take care of this issue. i spoke to chrysler customer service and they said since this van is out of the warranty they are not responsible. thanks.

Diferential sheer pin broke off traveling into right axle damaging same, then traveling thru transmission, damaging same, finally exiting through trans case. (this all happened while my wife was in a drive thru lane) this veh. is babied and driven solely by my wife. we are being told by several sources that this is a common problem. can you verify this?? thank you........pete diangi

I have a 96 chrysler t&c van the transmission was replaced almost 30 months and 38 k miles ago after it broke a shaft on the inside at 101k miles. came to a stop at conner went to go forwarded and the van was in neutral in gear position. dealer did not want to open it up just replace with new remanufactured from chrysler. said they were all doing that. now the replacement unit just broke a shaft for the third gear (bad weld). this is on a transmission with only 38525 miles on it. this was a new transmission when it came out in 1996 and now with 2 broken shafts on two transmissions in the same van, what is wrong with their product and this picture? who would of tunk it? i placed 165k miles on a 1991 dodge dakota without any transmission problems. what happens if the shafts break when someone is trying to get on the highway in front of 70,000 lbs of moving truck? trucks do not stop on a dime. do you want your family in that kind of scenario? i do not think that most of voting americans do either. i live in a city, which has at seven out of the top ten of the most dangerous intersections in the entire state of alabama. when you place a car into drive, you expect it to go most all the time. you do not want to have to think am i going to be in an accident or maybe kill my family because the transmission is going to blow up, breaks welds, or break a shafts if i pull out now or not. *jb

While driving the transmission failed and the vehicle was unable to shift gears. transmission was replaced twice, however the problem recurred. *ak the horn airbag and cruise control have been replaced. the vehicle had brake problems. the dealer determined that the front brakes were at 45% but the rear brakes were at 70%. the dealer cleaned and adjusted the brakes. the a/c failed, the dealer replaced the fan module. the power door locks failed. the cd player doesn't work. the low beam head lights do not provide enough light therefore the consumer has to leave the high beams on to see. this problem has been checked three times but the dealer said they seem correct. the passenger seat broke. the starter failed and as a result the vehicle would not start. the steering pump failed and as a result the steering wheel became tight when making turns. the rear heater lines were leaking. the water pump leaked. *nm

I purchased a used 1996 chrysler town & country van with a 2 year extended warranty. shortly after purchasing vehicle, i noticed a whirring sound followed by hesitation when putting van into drive or reverse. dealership where i made purchase took van for a test drive and reported to me that that was normal. i went in again about a year later, while it was still under warranty, and complained of the same problem. this time they put it through some diagnostic testing and concluded no problem. i have this in writing. well one year and one month to the date the transmission went. no longer under warranty, i had to pay for the repairs, they, however did not get my money. i took them to small claims, but lost. according to click and clack, as long as it was complained about under warranty they are still obligated to fix it. i did forget about complaining to the dealership about this matter. i remembered after picking my van up from trans. shop. that's why i took the dealership to court. do i have any rights left regarding this matter? please contact me and let me know, before i end up with an ulcer.*ak

Chrysler has known about the differential pin problems in it's 41/te(a604) transmission for years. the remedy of proper lubrication is simple. they refuse to fix it and refuse to help owners who must pay for the repairs. these transmission need to be recalled and repaired before they break and knock a hole in the side of the transmission case creating a very expensive repair. i can give you the details of my individual case if you require it.

There have been 2 transmission failures with this vehicle. one at 58,000 miles and the other at 86,700 miles. chrysler assisted in payment on the first failure and would not on the second. there apears to be secret warranty for some who take the time to complain. the safety issue is stoppage on the highway. we are lucky to be in a smaller town and traffice is slower and less of it. the secondary concern is the cost. we have spent $2800 in repairs to the transmission. the reputation is so bad that we have looked at making a trade of this vehicle and the first thing mentioned by the salesman was hows the transmission'? so we pay for the factory defect again in resale value. the situation was discussed with the local dealer and the company with no assistance. i would have never expected 100% repayment as i did use the van for transportation. the second report is the windshield wipers coming on at the worst time. like a sunny day in traffic! too much fidiling around to make them stop is distracting. they may be fixed now with the second multi function switch. it was worse when cold. we are very disapointed in our investment made and the dealer that made the repair. i think they are sheding 25000 employees - i wonder why!!!

The trashy transmission has been rebuilt twice, and when it downshifts from 4th gear to second gear, it gives a big push, a push big enough for u to hit someone from behind if you do not have your foot firmly on the brake pedal. also, the emergency break is the kind you push down with your foot, and it just springs back up when you step on it.the transmission type is 41te, and i have doen my research on it. chrsyler needs to do something, but what i am telling you is safety related.*ak (tiresize: 205/65/r16)

Transmission failure @ 70,000 miles needing complete rebuild for $1,600 - even though the transmission had been serviced by chrysler in jan. 1999 @ 38,249 miles. both the chrysler dealer in west virginia (location of failure) and the selling (home) chrysler dealer knew immediately what the problem was when first hearing about it: my guess would be plannetaries are completely stripped was the chrysler wv mechanic comment upon just looking at the van. spoke with many town & country owners since - this is a very common occurence on town & country - how can there not be either a recall or a class action suit with that many known failures on a known weak component ? if chrysler/benz will not monitor themselves shouldn't the government intervene ? Differential unit blewout while driving putting a hole in the transmission case the company wants me to pay 2/3 of the total to fix it, and i think the problem came from the rebuilt transmission they put in last year, my problem is the vehicle is 5 years old and to go thru two transmissions just dont make sense expecially at the owners expense. apparently there is a ploblem somewhere in the differential and the transmission for this to happen not only to be but other owners of the same vehicle for the same year they are telling me they wont know if it is there fault unless the open the area up to see what happen but i have to agree to pay for that to happen i dont think i should have to pay for there mistakes this is not the first time this has happen i owned a town@country before and had to put 2 transmissions in that thinking because they came oput with a new style and presumable a better vechicle i decided to give them another try. please help me in this or provide me with who can help me in this matter. thank you debra c jacob. *ak

We have had to have the whole transmission rebuilt and/or replaced in nov. we also had to take our vehicle bach within 1 week to have more trans. work done even after it was replaced. now it back in the shop for a water pump leak and a thermostat, along with replacement of the lines to the cooling system because they are cracked, along with another round with the belt and tensioner that we had replaced in april of 2000. we also have had the electrical rely replaced 2 times and we are wondering if we will have to replace it again after a year of use. we are so fed up with this vehicle right now that you can not even imagine. for the past 4 months it has set in our drive way because we are afraid to drive it..... we are now wondering when it is driven what is going to happen to it next. we are not to happy with having to put all this money in a vehicle that is 5 years old and 62k miles. we have all the service records on this vehicle if you need them. please respond to this complaint and investigate the problems futher. as it looks there are lots of people that have complained about the same problems as i have.

Automatic transmission occasionally would not shift into overdrive. often occurred after deceleration from highway speeds. only way to know was to observe engine rpm. sometimes could reset by pulling off to side of road and turning engine off for a few minutes, then re-start. first remanufactured transmission also had problems. second has been okay. wipers on intermittent settings would wipe several times in a row, then not wipe for an extended period. created visibility problems. first repair replaced multifunction switch. this didn't solve problem. second repair replaced wiper motor. noticed that the heater was not working. shop determined the evaporator was not working correctly due to leaks. only way to replace evaporator is to remove instrument panel; very expensive and time consuming.*ak

Transmission problems have been known to occur on these vehicles and chrysler has done nothing to my knowledge to correct this problem from occurring. i strongly think that in the right coditions it would cause a fire hazard. the transmissions are known to break the differential pin and shatter the case allowin fluid to come in contact with a hot exhaust system. i would be my opinion that they should recall these vehicles and repair this problem. *ak

Almost everytime when driving the van at around 40 mph, engine speed around 2000 to 3000 rpm, and suddenly reducing the speed due to traffic condition, the transmission became disengaged and could not engage again if i pressed the gas paddle and wanted to resume the speed. released the gas paddle completely then re-pressed it would not help. so the van eventually would come to a stop in the middle of the road, or go backward if it is up-hill. only if i pressed the gas paddle very hard and made the engine free-running reach 4000 rpm, the transmittion could suddenly engage again, which caused a very rough acceleration. this problem became more and more server and frequent within a month (now almost every time i slow down then accelate, and it also happens at very low speed). i think this is very dangerous and i will bring the van to a dealer as soon as possible. i wonder if this problem could be treated as safety defect. thank you very much. *ak

We purchased our town and country van new and have numerous problems with different componments of the van. this problem was the icing on the cake. although the van has 111,000+ miles, we would not expect to have this type of a problem already. especially considering the cost of the vehicle. after doing some research on the internet, it is obvious that chrysler definitely has a problem that they are unwilling with the transmission that they are unwilling to admit or make right with consumers. corporations should be held responsible for their actions, not be able to sweep them under the carpet. we are awaiting estimates for the repair of our vehicle. i will contact chrysler tomorrow to voice my dissatisfaction. i have received two recall notices on this vehicle--none of which indicated a problem with the transmission.*ak

We have had issues with the transmission of this van since it was purchased. leaked fluid, dealer was unable to find cause; had a noise on gear selection and delay before engaging into gear , blamed on low (1quart) level of transmission fluid; continued to have a slow leak as evidenced by fluid on garage floor; still no reason found; transmission failed on highway 476 at 60 mph; now being replaced by same dealer who could never find a problem, although the leak continued. this will now cost us close to $2500.00 to replace. i am very disappointed in the dealer and the van's performance. the issues have continued on with this van, never coming to resolution until now with the failure of the transmission.

While driving the van at approximately 45 mph, the transmission simply destroyed itself with no prior warning. upon inspection by a qualified repair shop, the transmission was deemed beyond repair. it had to be replaced at a cost of $1,600. the repair shop is an authorized repair shop for chrysler through our local car dealer-thornton chrysler dodge in florence, alabama. i contacted their warranty manager about a claim as they van had 73,000 miles. at the original time of purchase, i had purchased an extended warranty package for 7 year/70,000 miles. he made it very clear that they would not touch this issue as the van was 3,000 miles over warranty. he also made it clear that they would not have covered the claim if the van had 70,500 miles on it. i was very dissatisfied to say the least. since that time, i have come across a number of people who have had similar failures on chrysler vehicles. i am writing this to you today as a result of reading the october 1999 consumer reports which further supports my claim that this was a premature failure of a major component and also a reoccurring failure of which chrysler should be responsible. my wife and children were in the van at the time and are very fortunate to have been on a rural highway as opposed to the interstate or in busy traffice at the time of failure. if this complaint should be addressed elsewhere, please let me know by phone or e-mail if at all possible. thank you for your help. sincerely, terry thomas

The car was purchased after returning a new car (1998 saturn sw1) back to the saturn dealership that had gone through fuel injections and had rotor problems that saturn would not fix. they gave me an option to purchase another vehicle as they said they may not be able to provide a new vehicle to replace the one year old wagon that was a lemon. i feel due to where the van originated from (virginia), and the last owner was in alabama and i purchased it in washingtion that possibly the odometer may have been reversed back. the transmission should not go out at 53,000 miles (3,000 miles after purchase). i spoke to four dealerships in seattle area who were no help. the service managers at each dealership was rude and said it was not their problem. from the research i have done on chrysler transmissions this has been ongoing issue with consumers. i now have to pay $2200.00 + to get the transmission rebuilt. i want all vin inspections from each state that this van has been titled to see if the odometer was indeed turned back or if this is a defect that should be recalled. i need assistance as i have done all that i can to get answers with little assistance from both chrysler and saturn. thanks much for any and all details you can provide. a recall should be done on this transmission if many consumers have had the same problem on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles.

On numerous occasions the vehicle will intermittently fail to shift into o/d. it may drive fine for days and then lock in second gear. manually changing the gearshift does not override the failure. the onboard computer does not log the failure. it does capture the manual shifting event. the only way to correct the probelm is to turn off the van and start it back up. this could correct it for several days or it may recur withing minutes. totally random. occurs at any time, night or day. it often occurs during accellerations following turns. this situation is extremely dangerous especially when accellerating onto the freeway during rushhour traffic. we have to pulloff into the emergency lane, shut off the van, restart it up, and merge back into high speed traffic. it is extermrly frightening for my wife especially while transporting my two young boys. the chrysler repair shop could not get it to fail and thus nothing was done. aamco looked at the transmission and indicated the transmission and fluids were fine. they also could not get the transmission to fail.

*ak

The differential pin, bearing pin for the center spider gears cracked more toward one end or closer to an end vs. at the center, the now two piece pin protrudes from the differential cage and wears through the case on the bell housing side ,and a transmission fluid leak appears that is extremely similar to a front seal or front pump leak. once the hole is present the differential pin segments strike the edge of the opening and wear the hole large enough for the longer of the two segments to protrude and stop the entire drive line, engine, transmission and front wheels and axles instantainiously. this failure occurred at 25 mph, and was like hitting a brick wall. the transmission is a 41te. the dealership representative stated completely off the record that they have seen a large influx of this failure in these vehicles with the 41te with mileage averaging 65000, as little as 15000, and as many as 100000. if we were at highway speed when the pin let loose and locked the drive line, the vehicle would have been uncontrolable due to the locked front wheels. chrysler has changed the designation of the a604 to the 41te in a cheap attempt to separate litigious action in progress by older van owners, from the owners, of the newer or latest body style. the 41te is the same design deficient transmission as the a604 with at different designation (ultradrive automatic). having purchased replacement transmissions for two of the three chrysler minivans we have owned, and having listened to innumerable persons i've met that own or have owned a chrylser/plymouth/dodge minivan tell of replacing their transmission, it's more than time for the federal government to protect the public from this lecherous and unsafe company. the failure of the differential pin is more than a nuisance repair, it is a hazard that will kill. chrysler needs to be taken to task to recall, redesign, retrofit and repair the fleet now, before someone is needlessly killed.*ak
