Defect Summary | Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with integral child seats. this is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. on the integral child seat, the shoulder belts restraining the child retract and lock in place after the belt buckle is connected to the latch plate. the latch plate movement locks the belts to make sure the child is restrained in the case of a vehicle crash.

Odi continues to receive complaints alleging latching/retractor mechanism problems.chrysler's assessment of the problem indicates that owners of the vehicles are not adhering to the cleaning requirements for the seat.the seat appears to malfunction if crumbs of food or beverage residue accumulates on the latching tongue in thewell located between the child's legs.odi has 19 complaints of retract lockup.seven of these complaints report cutting the straps to remove the child.two of the seven consumers allege the child was choking.chrysler reports 60 owner/field reports which indicated 19 harnesses were cut to remove the children.additional information is needed to fully assess the safety consequence of the alleged defect and to evaluate the chrysler corporation's rational for not conducting a safety recall campaign. |

On a few seperate occasions while driving my 1996 chrysler town and country my daughters seatbelt has just released without any warning. during 3 sudden stops the seatbelts have unlatched by themselves and one time while driving down the road my seatbelt came undone after i adjusted myself in my seat. we just bought this van 2 months ago. also, without warning the body control module took out my entire electrical system, including my radio. there should be a sensor that it is going bad before it actually goes. even after going to jack powell dodge to have it all fixed, the horn doesn't work , the stereo is messing up, the instrument cluster is messing up, and the windshield wipers don't seem to work properly.

After having purchased a used 1996 chryler town and country lxi minivan i found a consumer alert at www.unsafebelts.com. the website indicated that the vehicle was equipped with unsage gen3 buckles that could release at a time of impact. the site also directed consumers to contact the nhtsb and file this report. my famly have had the van only several days and have yet to experience any problems with the seatbelts, but i want to ensure my family's safety if an accident was to happen. thank you for your time in this matter. *ak

The seat belt in the integrated child safety seats locks up and the child cannot be removed without using the emergency release. the left seat is permanently stuck and the right seat occasionally releases. chrysler has recalled 1995 and some 1996 minivans for the same problem but refuses to pay for repairs to my car because they say my car was built after those included in the recall period; however, the tag on the car seats states they were assembled in 1995. when i told this to customer service representative sal palazzola he only said that i was not in their computer for a recall.

Third row seat belt is very difficult to fasten because of its length, it is too short even on a normal size occupant. this leaves the occupant un protected in an accident.*ak consumer had problems unbuckling seat belt. it turned out that the buckle and the seat belt has turned 180 degrees, and the release button ended up on the inside instead of the outside. *la |
