Clockspring has failed twice and replaced twice and is failing again now. air bag, horn, cruise control and other components fail when clockspring fails. i feel this could be a potential life threatening situation if air bag fails in an accident because of clockspring failure.

Failure of clockspring in steering wheel assembly. this failure causes the driver side airbag to quit working. it also causes the horn not to work. additionally the cruise control also quits functioning. the clockspring electrical ribbon bends in one specific point and over time the ribbon fails completely.

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 chrysler town and country. the contact stated the air bag light illuminated and stayed on. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where she was informed the entire air bag system needed to be replaced. the contact believed that the salt on the road contributed to the failure and that there should have been a coating that would prevent the salt from damaging the vehicle. the current and failure mileages were approximately 130,000.

The airbag light kept going on and off while driving. checked on the computer and found where this was a problem with chrysler products from 1994-2000 caused by a faulty clockspring. there was a recall on these models. mine is a 2001 chrysler limited minivan with only 66,900 miles on it and cost me $357.00 to get it fixed. depending on when this car was manufactured, it could still have the same brand clockspring as the other years. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 chrysler town and country. while driving at various speeds, the steering column and clock spring failed. the only warnings that were present prior to the failure were the air bag light illuminating and the horn failing to work. the contact believes this is a safety issue because she needs her horn to prevent crashes. the failure has only occurred once. the dealer confirmed that the clock spring failed, which caused the components connected to it to fail as well. the clock spring was replaced at the contact's expense. the current mileage was 145,484 and failure mileage was 145,400. updated 07/07/08. *lj updated 07/07/08 *jb

On sept. 28, 2005 i took my 2001 chrysler town and country ex model minivan vin#2c4gp74l11r406254 to dick smith chrysler in aiken, sc to correct a problem with the airbag system. the airbag light on the dash was lighting up erratically and i became concerned about the safe function of the airbag system. the service dept. ran a diagnostic on the system and found a defective clock spring, which they replaced for $250.45. upon returning home i ran an internet search about the problem and found this exact problem led to a recall of the 1996-2000 models of the same minivan. i promptly contacted the chrysler company, but they said that they would not do anything because my exact vin number was not included in the previous recalls. in addition, the service dept. at dick smith chrysler also said they would not honor the previous recall because it as of yet did not include my model year. i am filing this complaint because i believe chrysler has not corrected the problem and my safety was placed at risk because of the malfunction in my vehicle. i did the responsible thing and had my vehicle repaired, but i was offered no compensation for the repair because the recall had not yet been extended to cover the 2001 year. what else can i do to insure this problem is addressed in a timely and safe manner?*jb

2001 town & country airbag light lights up intermittently. the dealer says a clockspring has failed not covered by the manufacturer. the dealer will repair but charges a deductible per the extended warranty. this is a safety defect that should be covered by the manufacturer, aggravated by the fact that 1998-2000 vehicles, just before this model year, are covered by a recall for the exact same item.

The cruise control on my 2001 chrysler town and country doesn't turn on when the switch is activated. i had the same problem with my 1997 plymouth grand voyager. the problem in the voyager was taken care of when the dealer replaced the clock spring (safety recall) in the steering column. if a defective clock spring forced a safety recall in my 1997 grand voyager, why is it acceptable for me to drive my 2001 town and country with the same defective clock spring? *jb

Airbag indicator light comes on and off. this appears to be similar to the numerous other complaints with this same system in the 2001 town & country mini van. the light might come on once or twice on a short trip, or it may not come on during a long trip. at times it will turn on and off many times during those same intervals. we are waiting for a recall before we proceed with any repairs. this needs to addressed by chrysler in a service bulletin or a recall. *nm

2001 chrysler town and country minivan. airbag warning light has come on intermittantly over last few months. dealership recommends immediate replacement of airbag clockspring, as well as replacement of headlamp switch for an unrelated electrical issue with flickering instrument cluster lights. neither are covered under the 8 year/80,000 mile warranty we purchased for car. we were charged $135.00 to replace a $3.00 clockspring. upon further investigation, i found that in the late 90's many chryslers were recalled for clockspring and many complaints have been made on later models. i think the problem is still a manufacturer issue and should be recalled.*ak

We purchased our 2001 chrysler town and country new in july of 2001. since that time it has been in and out of the shop for various odd electrically related issues and numerous recalls. we have had problems with the power door locks and even problems opening them with the key several times on the sliding doors(service dept at dealership just dismissed it as unable to duplicate). two years ago, the radio got stuck on (could not adjust volume, turn it off or anything). this was the beginning of upwards of 5 times the radio has been taken out and replaced with a new unit after being sent off. this requires two visits each time to drop off the car. the latest time, they had our radio for 5 months! the console lights would not come on, so you could't read anything on the panel at night. they replaced the dimmer switch knob. they had to replace the clockspring in the steering wheel because the airbag light kept coming on when you turned the wheel. we keep telling them that there is something wrong with the electrical system but they say it checks out fine. we have also had the driver's window lock up a few times, and the automatic locks not operational when you reach 20 mph. i believe that there are several other issues that we have had, but i cannot recall them as the list is so long. *ak

The air bag, horn and other devices with controls on the streeing wheel have failed to operate. the vehicle is a 2001 town and country chrysler van. there was a recall for year 2000 and earlier for this problem due a failed clockspring. this is an early 2001 vehicle as i took delivery in december 2000. this is a safety issue - it appears that the problem is identical to that described in nhtsa campaign # 04v480000. why is this not covered in the recall? a local chrysler dealer is qoting me a cost of $250 + to repair.
03/01/2009810001
In my 2001 chrysler town and country minivan the horn, cruise control, and airbag have stopped working. i understand this is a common problem due to a broken clockspring in the steering wheel assembly, and that chrysler recalled previous models with this same defect. driving without a horn and reliable airbag clearly presents a safety risk. i believe a recall or free repair is in order. *tr

My 2001 chrysler town & country suffered a complete transmission failure. i bought this vehicle new in 2001 and thought i was buying the best mini-van for the money. however, i've had nothing but problems with this vehicle. power windows have failed, power sliding door has failed 3 times, power lift gate failed, air bags caused a check engine light to come on ( replaced under warranty). all of these were minor in comparison to the transmission, which cost me $3078 to have rebuilt. i've found too many instances of transmission failures on the internet, i question why chrysler hasn't been called out on this by the nhtsa. chrysler knows about the quality of their vehicles and continues to do nothing about it. in the future i will never buy another chrysler product. *tr

I read about a recall on the clockspring on 2000 chrysler t&c vans. it stated it ran from until aug 2000. my van is a 2001 chrysler t&c manufactured in 8/2000. i have this same clockspring failure that causes the airbag not to function. i have tried to talk to chrysler to no avail. it just seems that they had some bad parts during that time and possibly those parts were also put on some of the 2001 vans manufactured in 8/2000. the dealer said that this clockspring failure is a common event. it seems to be a safety issue. *tr

I was cut off by another driver on interstate 5, lost traction on the center shoulder and crashed into the middle railing at about 55-60 mph. my van was heavily damaged front and rear. it was later determined a total loss. *jb what surprised me was the failure of any airbag being deployed in my van. i later notified the auto maker corporation and was informed that the reason the airbags did not deploy was due to the fact that there wasn't enough force to damage the vehicles frame...(?)

My wife had an accident on sept 30, 2004. she was traveling app 35 mph when a vehicle made a left turn in front of her. she struck the vehicle broadside with such force that it flipped that vehicle on its side. my vehicle had severe damages to the full front with approximately $10,000 in reparis. the air bags did not deploy. i reported the incident to chrysler. they sent an investigator in to inspect the system before repairs commenced. the investigator advised my vehicle was not in the air bag recall. he further stated there was nothing wrong with the sensors or air bag system. my insurance carrier has refused to replace or have the air bag system checked out. my concern is that the air bags may deplore on its own while driving the vehicle or fail to deplore if i am involved in another accident. also i can't understand how a impact across the full front of the vehicle while traveling 35 mph did not set the air bag off, when it is my understanding they should have deploed at 7 to 15 mph. i feel there is a problem with the senor and air bag system on this vehicle that chrysler is not acknowleging. i ask that nhtsa investigate this problem on my behalf.*ak

The airbag light came on and stays on in my 2001 chrysler town & country. at the same time, the cruise control became inoperable and the dashboard lights stopped working. when we took it to the dealer, we were told that the problems were all related to the onboard computer and that it could take thousands of dollars just to diagnose the problem. they said some 2001's were recalled but not your vin #. asked if there was a problem with the airbag or whether it would deploy, we were told there was no way of knowing without doing the major diagnostics. they refused to give an estimate or a ceiling on the price. this is unfair and we are worried that the airbag will not deploy and that there may be significant instability in the on-board computer which could lead to a serious safety problem. *jb

Air bag alert light comes on repeatedly while driving and when doing so the air bag is no longer functional. the duration of this event can be from ten seconds to twenty minutes. have taken it to numerous chrysler dealers who in each instance state that they cannot duplicate the problem. we have lost at a minimum twenty days of time that the car was in the shop for this complaint. the most recent was visit (4/30-5/1/03) and were told the problem was repaired. not so. the first time the car was driven on 5/1/03 the light again came on. my concern is with the dealer's advisory that the air bag is not functioning when the light is on and this could result in a catastrophic incident. the vehicle has been inspected for this problem repeatedly at verger chrysler in coos bay, oregon and fisher chrysler in yuma, arizona.
