We had our 2002 town and country to the dealer in johnson city tn a few years back for the same complaint (air bag light stays on). 2001 and i think 2003 were recalled for this problem but not 2002. this dealer too wanted us to foot the bill a third time. said no. did not know that they were not to sell a vehicle with the air bag light on.

On june 28, 2008 we purchased a 2002 chrysler town & country van from a local dealer. when i test drove it i noticed a chip in the windshield, front headlight fogged up from moisture inside it and the airbag light stayed on continuously. i pointed this out to the salesperson who stated she would make sure these things were fixed as they interfered with the safety of the vehicle. when i took delivery of the vehicle all things seemed to be alright and then after a few miles the airbag light again illuminated and stayed that way. i took the van back in and told the sales manager about the light. at first he refused to fix it for free. eventually he stated that they would fix it if we paid $100 towards the repair. i decided to accept this offer. when i returned to pick up the van all seemed well but after a few miles of driving the light again came on and stayed on. thinking that there was nothing further we could do, we drove it that way. we still own the van and only recently i was told that as long as that light was on the airbags would not deploy. we are now wanting to sell the van but can't due to this safety problem. i also only learned recently that a dealer can not legally sell a vehicle while the airbag light was on like that. thanking you in advance for any help you can offer, bill deem

Air bag warning light began to light (intermittently) at approx 58,500 miles for no apparent reason. progressively became more frequent, and would remain lit for long periods of time / miles. the few times the warning light would cease, i was able to trigger the error by wiggling the steering wheel left and right several times. suspected the 'clock spring' cable in steering column, since the problem sounded very similar to recall 04v480000 (which covers 1998-2000 town & country minivans). became concerned when i found out that air bags would likely not deploy if the warning light was lit during an accident. requested dealer inspect and advise. i also pointed out the earlier recall on 1998-2000 models. dealer indicated a $100 diagnostic charge would be billed to me. i spoke to chrysler customer service on 21-july 2008 who indicated no recall was in effect for 2002 t & c's, and i would have to pay for the repair. customer service indicated i might get reimbursed if a recall was ever ordered. end result: dealer technician determined the 'clock spring' within the steering column was indeed faulty and so i paid the dealer $244.41 to replace the 'clock spring'. air bag lamp now only lights during the test phase / initial start-up and quickly goes out (as it should). please note: in contrast to earlier reports of 'clock spring' failure / defect, i did not have any concurrent problem with the cruise control or horn within the steering wheel. these worked fine before and after repair. *tr

Airbag light and alarm tone comes on intermittently while driving, sometime remains on for more than 10 seconds then goes out and comes back on again after a few seconds. recently at dealer for another unrelated repair and asked them to troubleshoot this, technician said it was an intermittent open in the clock spring (cs) and that there wasn't a recall. i had reported previous clock spring problem on my 1997 dodge which was subsequently recalled and know what it looks like, but this time the cruise, and horn still worked. i purchased a new cs p/n 5082050ac and pulled the steering wheel myself to replace it. it appears to have fixed the problem. however, i noticed that the replacement cs was different than the original cs (which i kept). the defective original cs has the following numbers on it p/n 04685712ac and smaller *1 324101379r*. it also has a socket with copper clips where a connector split 4 wire harness connects to the cs with the two cables going to the airbag module. the replacement cs had no socket and had eliminated the connector and had two 2 wires harnesses hard wired to the cs. i disassembled the defective cs and checked it for breaks in the ribbon conductors there weren't any visible also the construction appeared to be much more durable possibly with braided copper laminate runs. since it was intermittent i suspect that the problem is actually with the harness connector to the cs socket for the airbag connection, developing a loose or dirty contact connection. perhap chrysler already knows this and that is why the replacement has eliminated that point of failure. please pursue a recall action on this for the socket connector type cs as this can cause airbag failure and possible death or injury. i am an engineer by trade and if they want the old part for testing they can contact me directly. *tr

2002 chrysler town & country ex. air bag light constantly on since two weeks after purchasing the new vehicle in 2002. was taken into dealership for repair. within 2 days, air bag light is back on. several times later no solution. this problem is similar to a documented recall on previous model years of this vehicle. this has been over 5 years now and no solution. i believe chrysler should have a recall for the 2002 year model for this ongoing problem. *jb

I sadly own a 'chrysler' town and country awd 2002 minivan with many electrical and mechanical problems that i'm forced to live with, but the following safety issues are intolerable. first, the intermittent air bag light, now on steadily. second, the intermittent non-functioning horn, now does not work at all, cruise control does not work and radio buttons on steering wheel does not work. chrysler corp denies major safety problem exists yet its a complaint that's all over the web among its many other persistent problems. chrysler says its sounds like the problem may be in the clock spring in the steering column. i say its sounds like the problem may be in the care or lack of care of chrysler on real safety issues on their products. events that lead up to the failure are none, product is just simply defective and fails on its own. consequences for this failure can be catastrophic, this is not rocket science, no horn and no air bag no brains! chrysler needs to wake up and rectify this safety problem, many other owners have this problem and the government and or the media needs to get involved before someone dies if it hasn't god forbid already happened. i will be contacting the secretary of transportation and the media to see if a solution can be found rapidly. *jb

Involved in a crash in february 2006 in which a car pulled into the pathway of this vehicle, which had the right of way and was traveling 30-35 mph. other driver was cited with failure to yield. the airbag did not deploy resulting in whiplash of the driver of this vehicle, followed by 3 months of recovery, reduced work schedule, pain, etc. this vehicle hit the other car in the driver side tire, breaking the front axle of the other car. both cars came to a very immediate stop. the airbag was not examined or fixed. *jb

AIR BAGS - FRONTAL
02/28/20079000010012/28/2001
 1) at low speeds, especially turning there was noise and shaking in the front of the chrysler 2002 town and country. it was identified at a garage as a power steering cooler hose problem and in fact there was a recall for this. i then took it to a chrysler dealer - doan in rochester ny - who agreed that was the problem, but my vehicle identification number was not on the list for replacement. i found it very hard to believe that the correct problem did not qualify. i called chrysler customer service and got the same story. they said that the vin numbers listed were determined by nhtsa and they - in so many words - were off the hook. i did have it replaced with my own money, but i am upset about it. 2) my air bag light started to go on telling me that the air bags were turned off. then the light would go off for a little and come back on for no reason , speed, or outside temperature. again i was told it was clock springing in the mechanism in the steering column. i felt that this was a very dangerous problem involving the life or death of my family should an accident occur. the dealer again agreed that this was the problem, encouraged me to get it fixed, and gave me an indication that this was common and that again my vehicle did not qualify for any recall. i had it fixed, but feel that this is a dangerous situation. *jb

Air bag system warning light. 6 miles after we bought vehicle warning light came on and took to dealer and faulty item was replaced. since then the warning light has come on a total of 6 times. each time the van was took in to get fixed. by the time the 5th warning light came on(july 15) we were told the module was putting out false signals. in one instance we were driving our van for a week with the light on waiting for the replacement part and was told the van was perfectly safe to drive. the sixth time we took it in(july 30, milage only at 3499) the warning light was going on and off every few seconds and was told that the wiring was corrosive and they could put a temp fix on it by cleaning/spraying wiring that would last up to 3/5 months. i was not happy with that due to safety issues. they also told us that if the air bag light was on the airbags would not work properly. which upset us due to the time we were driving the van for a week with light on due to them saying it would be safe. we contacted diamler chrysler july 15th and filed a complaint. two weeks after last visit (30 july) contacted dealer to see if solution to problem was fould yet because was uncomfortable with temp fix. now they will be doing a complete rewiring on 21 august. hoping this will be the last and final time i have to take it in for the same problem. due to safety issues of air bags and the safety of my family, i wanted to inform you of the problems going on with our van. and to find out any important information regarding air bag warning light problems currently happening. thank you.*ak

I have a 2002 chrysler town and country that has an air bag warning light that illuminates intermittently. upon researching this issue i learned that there had been a recall on several of these vehicles in 2002 to address an issue with a clockspring. this issue causes integral safety features, such as the horn and air bag, to fail on occasion. i first contacted my local dealer who informed me that my vin did not come up as being eligible for the recall. i contacted chrysler directly and got the same answer. the issue may not come up on a vin search, but it certainly does impact my vehicle. i have tried to obtain authorization to have the clockspring replaced at chrysler's expense, to no avail. as this is a potential safety hazard, i would like to see the matter investigated.*ak

The airbag warning light comes on in the 2002 town & country limited shortly after starting it and as we drove intermittently. it stayed lit for 5-20 seconds each time. i took vehicle to the dealer to ask the question, and was told the airbag warning light was probably caused by the clock spring. i was told that they were on back order, especially for steering wheels with the radio controls built in which mine had. the parts representative said he could order it but didnt know when it would be in. in addition, i there was a cost for installation as well as the part. i expressed my concern about an airbag misfire or failure to fire, and he said that the airbag deactivated when the light was on, but as long as the light was off it should work fine. also there shouldn't be any risk of misfire, but he couldnt guarantee it. is this considered a safety issue, especially since while the light was on the airbag won't fire? should i be charged for such a repair if it was safety related? i just purchased the vehicle from a private owner and just wanted to make sure it was safe since i travel with my family in it.*ak
