Defect SummaryCertain minivans are being recalled that were originally sold in or currently registered in the 27 states plus the district of columbia that use greater amounts of salt for winter road deicing. the up-front (uf) air bag sensors that contain brass bushings installed in these vehicles may corrode and crack allowing water to enter the sensor. these sensors provide enhanced air bag performance in certain types of frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIn one of these crashes, with one or both of the vehicle's uf sensors inoperative, the occupants will not benefit from the enhanced air bag protection that these sensors would provide.
Corrective SummaryFor vehicles registered in the recall states, dealers will replace the original uf air bag sensors with ones with greater corrosion resistance. vehicles registered in other states will obtain a lifetime free replacement of any uf sensor that fails. the campaign began on july 2, 2007. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesDaimlerchrysler's campaign nos. g09/x16. daimlerchrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, it has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above free of charge. customers also may contact the national highway traffic safety administration

Defect SummaryChrysler is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 dodge caravan, grand caravan and chrysler town & country vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kansas, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, tennessee, utah, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, alaska and the district of columbia. the front crash sensors may crack under certain environmental conditions and allow water to enter into the sensor. this can cause the sensor to become inoperative and illuminate the airbag warning light. these sensors were added to enhance the performance of the airbag system in certain frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIf the front crash sensors become inoperative, the driver is immediately alerted by illumination of the airbag warning light and the vehicle should be promptly serviced. until the vehicle is repaired, the airbags may not provide the enhanced protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryChrysler will replace the front airbag sensors with a new design. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety improvement campaign will begin during june 2010. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesChrysler's campaign number is j38. chrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, chrysler has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above at no cost.

The model year (my) 2005 daimlerchrysler (dc) minivans have the new advanced frontal air bag systems with two front crash sensors mounted on the frame rails behind the front bumper and a main crash sensor inside the air bag control module mounted in the passenger compartment.according to dc, the front crash sensors are designed to optimize detection of frontal offset and angular crashes.the advanced air bag system offers different levels of air bag inflation based on input from the crash sensors.this investigation revealed that the front crash sensors can corrode from water entering the sensor assembly.dc is still investigating all potential root causes of sensor failures.a corroded sensor can set a fault code, illuminate the air bag warning lamp, and become disabled.it appears that failure of one or both front crash sensors can potentially result in no/late deployment of frontal air bags and non-deployment of driver's higher inflation levels in certain frontal crashes.it should be noted that occupants of vehicles involved in a crash may not be aware of late or improperly reduced level of air bag inflation and thus field reporting of such events may be suppressed.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-003) for further investigation of my 2005 (and 2006) dc minivans.note: total number of odi and manufacturer complaints includes some duplicate reports.

We turned on the truck and noticed the air bag light was flickering and as i was driving came on and off; and before we finished our trip the light stayed on. another symptom that we noticed before this happened, was the dashboard needles went all the way to the opposite side but came back to normal position. i called chrysler at 1800 853-1403 to find out information on any air bag recalls, however i was told the recall was serviced on november 15,2007 and they did not provide me with confirmation number and believe this problem was not fixed properly or was not fixed at all. *tr

Air bag light turns on when i turn on the van, and it doesn't go off until i turn off the van. i see there was a recall in 2010 for this where the crash sensor cracks in cold weather and moisture gets into the sensor, causing the airbag light to go on and stay on, and also causing the airbags to not inflate when needed. chrysler says my van isn't on the recall list. *tr

Got recall notice from chrysler l01 telling me there is an issue with my occupant restraint controller. chrysler tells me that it could cause my air bags to deploy at the wrong time. called dealer and he tells me that there are no parts now to repair the issue. i have to bring auto to dealer and have them disassemble and scan the part to get the correct part number of the controller, then they will order the part. since there are currently no parts avail, the wait is expected to be up to two months or more. so in the mean time i am driving a vehicle known to have a demonstrated premature air bag deployment. are you aware of this issue?

Air bag light is on again. there is a recall and my state is included but not my van. had the same problem a few years ago. there was a recall. i took it to dealership and had it replaced. now, it is on again. i see many people complaining about this same thing.

Bought my 2005 t&c chrysler minivan in spring of 2009 with a little over 69,000 miles on it. few months after purchase the red airbag warning light would occassionally come on while at idle or driving rates. no other problems occured and it wasn't happening frequently. by the end of the first year of ownership, the driver side back door lock quit working with the automatic locks, and within a year an a half the driver's side window would occassionally not roll up or down and the front dome lights quit working. replaced an air conditioner part also. spent $500 on the front end as well that year. when window failure was more frequent i started researching on the internet about problems that have been common in this make and model of van. on oct 4th 2011, the van failed to start, making a ticking sound, figured battery or altenator. we cleaned battery cables, tried what we could to get it started. the radio and dashlights came on,all the gauges would jump erractically; when we rolled up the passsenger windows radio remained on, however when we rolled up the drivers window the radio and all gauges quit working. we ended up jumping it and were able to drive it home. had the battery tested and tried a brand new battery to make sure that was the only problem. when we put the battery in and started it, flames shot up from the middle section of the van, just infront of the engine. the panic alarm, the horn, and the windshield wipers where all going off. as soon as we got the battery disconnected the fire went out and alarms and wipers went off. i talked to the nearest chrysler dealership and from explanation of the various problems they said it sounded like several little problems as opposed to one big electrical problem. i have 3 small children and after the experiences i have had with the van and reading others issues online, i cant wait to get rid of this piece.

We have previously had trouble with the 'seat belt light' coming on the dash. the seat belt retainer was suposedly replaced by pettyjohn in bethany, mo. sometime i think in early 2007. air bag light stays on the dash continually, now days. summer of 2010 i contacted chrysler. they told me to have my local dealer ( barnes baker , trenton, mo. run some dianostic tests, which i would have to pay for.. i did have them run but chrysler waved they charge. the 'airbag light' was turned off , i believe by tecnician running daignostics. the 'air bag' light stayed out for a short while after the diagnostics was run. the chrysler representative told me by phone that chrysler was not going to pay for the repairs. for quite sometime afterwards the 'airbag light' was intermittant, now since winter of 2010/2011 it stays on continually.

My husband was t-boned in our 05 town and country limited by a truck carrying a double long horse trailer running a red light. the impact hit right at the sliding door on the driver's side. the glass on the sliding door and rear seats were knocked out. the metal from the van came in and formed around the edges of my 2 year old's carseat. no side airbags deployed. chrysler sent someone out to investigate and said that the airbags were found fully functional and that the impact was not great enough to cause the airbags to deploy. the accident totalled out our vehicle and we feel very strongly that the airbags should have deployed. had my daughter not been in her carseat correctly, she would have gotten crushed by the metal of the van slamming into her body. i just had our faulty airbag sensor light fixed in june 2010 (which was staying illuminated at all times) and wonder if the side airbags also weren't functioning correctly. my husband and daughter were slightly injured but it could have been better had the airbags deployed. mileage at time of accident and total loss - 55,990.

The red llight on the dash panel comes on while the engine is on. this happens wether the vehicle is in motion or stationery. if frequently goes out after a few minutes. there has been no frontal impact with this vehicle. approximate mileage when it began was 85000; present mileage is 91000. dealer did not diagnois any problem.m problem occurs almost every time the vehicle is driven but does not last more than a few miles.

01/15/201092000
I own a 2005 chrysler town and country minivan. i noticed that there is a recall on the front crash sensor that doesn't start until june, but my airbag warning light is already illuminated. it started lighting up a couple of months ago. when i contacted my local chrysler dealership, they denied any knowledge of a recall. i called chrysler directly and was told that i could get the sensor fixed right now, but it would have to be at my own expense. the dealership was going to charge me $130 for diagnostics, when they should already know about the recall. my concern is this: if (god forbid) i happen to be in a crash between now and june, what happens if my airbag doesn't deploy? chrysler is aware that my sensor is out and is doing nothing. what are my options for ensuring the safety of my vehicle over the course of the next three months, before the official recall begins? i truly think this is a sham that chrysler knows about the problem, but is taking their sweet time in coming up with a solution and fixing our defective vehicles.

On march 16, 2008 i was hit head on in my minivan by someone driving an suv that was traveling aprox. 55 mph on a 2 lane hwy. i believe that upon impact all of the airbags in my minivan deployed including the knee air bag that is located under the steering column in my 2005 chrysler town and country mini van. my lower legs have suffered (what is most likely) permanent pain/damage from the crushing impact of the plastic part of the dash and the knee airbag. i have nerve damage to the front of my lower legs and my ankle area. i am still treating with medication and still suffering pain on a daily basis. i have been to mayo clinic and still cannot find any fix to the damage that was caused by the air bag. i have had surgery on both legs and still no relief. please help, i think the knee airbags are dangerous and the mfg. does not even mention the airbags existence in the owners manual. *tr

2005 chrysler mini-van airbag light came on and will not reset. upon review nhtsa had called for a recall due to corrosion to sensors from road salt. chrysler then issued a recall, but only for a limited number vehicles. we then scheduled a visit to the dealership they rejected this van as not being under recall. argued that after the worse year for salt usage, in ohio would they at least look to see if the van had the same problem as those recalled. they stated it would be a minimum of 82.00 just to look and would still not be covered under recall. *tr

For at least six months, we have had an issue with the airbag sensor coming on in our vehicle. this concerns us that our air bag may not operate correctly in the event of a collision. we checked the recall list and found that there is a recall for our type of vehicle, but for those manufactured a few months after ours. i feel the same problem probably exists in our car and should be included in the recall. i also fear that it is a safety issue. the recall says it is chrysler's campaign number j38.

The front passenger airbag light often comes on on my 2005 chrysler town and country when the steering wheel is turned. i took it to the dealer when this happened the first time, and they replaced the wiring harness for the airbag, but the problem still occurs. also, the headlamps often fail to turn on when the the switch is turned. turning the switch on and off several times usually solves the problem, but lately it seems to be getting worse.

It started actually quite some time ago. it seemed that every once in a while i would lose my power steering. once it almost caused me to run off the road and into a cement curb. luckily, i was able to work the wheel around and after about five minutes of trying to control the van, the power steering came back. there has been a noise at the front of the vehicle for quite some time and then i noticed the van was leaking something. i took it to the dealer and they said there was a leak in the steering gear assembly and that it needed to be replaced. they also said that they are replacing so many of them that the part was backordered and they were unsure when they would get one. that was in nov. 2007. it is now april 2008 and i am still waiting. in feb of 2008 i was told they had one for me and i took my van in and then was told that it never arrived and that they told their parts dealer that they needed it immediately because the power steering fluid is leaking onto other parts and can cause problems. it's still been two months since then and nothing. the whole front of my van feels and sounds like its going to fall off at any moment. i have had to refill my power steering fluid every 2-3 days since nov 07 and it isn't getting any better. unfortunately, this is not the only problem i have had with this van. the right cv joint had to be replaced after only 2 years, the air bag sensors went bad and only after i paid to have it checked out to the tune of $70 were they recalled, there was a recall on the rear heating/cooling tubes because of cold weather conditions, the driver side sliding door no longer works as well as the front passenger window. during a terrible rain storm, i had to go through a large puddle and the spare tire was ripped from the undercarriage because it was never sealed properly and the part was defective. both sets of brakes have had to be replaced, rotors redone and the tires have been replaced twice. *tr

Front air bags on 2005 chrysler town & country do not work due to a corroded sensor in the front of the car. chrysler is refusing to fix this under warranty although the vehicle is less than two years old, and they are replacing corroded switches on other years and models.*ak

Air bag warning light came on dashboard. dealer said it was caused by driver's side 'seat belt retractor needing to be replaced. they ordered this, said i would have to pay. not covered by dealer. then, on may 12, 2007 i saw on the tv may 11 2007 report that there was a nhtsa recall 07v192000 concerning sensor/ control module manufacturer's report on may 1, 2007. dealer still knew nothing about this recall to this date. *ak

I have a 2005 chrysler town & country which i purchased new. in the following months the airbag light has come on: february 05, may 06, november 06, december 06, jan 07, february 07, march 07, the light has stayed on for 3 minutes - 40 minutes. i have repeatedly brought the vehicle back to the dealer. sometimes it throughs a code ,but most often it did not. at times they have been able to duplicate the problem ,and sometimes they could not. recently they have not been able to duplicate the problem and no codes were shoown. the dealer was looking to chrylser for tech support, and i have been waiting 6 weeks. i have contacted chrysler may times, they told me to deal with the dealer - there is nothing that can be done unless a code is thrown or the problem is duplicated. they have also told me that when the light goes on the airbag will not work.*ak

Tl* - the contact owns a 2005 chrysler town and country. the contact stated that the sensor control module for the front air bags was not working and the sensor light turned on warning of a airbag malfunction. also, the contact stated that the front driver's side seat belt was not tightening as it should. the contact replaced the front crash sensors, and the seat belt retractor. the contact believed that water entered the sensor assembly. the contact had the vehicle repaired, but believed that the work she had done should fall under a safety recall. the current and failure mileage were 59015 miles.*ak updated 03/30/07. *jb

We have a 2005 town and country minivan that we purchased from brunswick auto mart. we have had to have it serviced to repair the air bag sensors three times in less than 45,000 miles. there has been no reason why the sensors says failure. the bags have not been deployed in an accident or even inadvertently but a vehicle that has a safety system mandated by the government should have to meet better qualifications. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated the airbag warning light illuminated constantly. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who stated that the contact should give the vehicle a couple of days to see if the light reset, but it did not. the dealer was contacted a second time, who then stated the problem was most likely due to failure of the air bag sensor.

My 2005 chrysler town and country mini van has repeatedly had its airbag light go on while operating vehicle. it has been in at least 6 or 7 times to date for repair and once they kept it for two weeks. they assured me the problem was fixed and again the light is on. i contacted chrysler who advised it was a dealer issue and nothing was resolved. now the vehicle has over 36,000 miles and the airbag light is on again and i am concerned that the unresolved repair will not be covered. the service manager from dealership also advised that airbag system will not work if light is on. this required equipment seems to be trouble prone. *nm

Air bag light came on. being a school vehicle it places the van out of service. i contacted the dealer to diagnose the problem and found out this is a common problem and since the van has 51000 miles on it the warranty has expired. i feel this being a safety issue chrysler should cover the repair. i do know of one other school van that has had the same issue with the air bag light. i also feel that most consumers would ignore the light and take their chances before spending 214.00 on the repair.*jb

Air bag warning light would come on and off intermittently and than stay on until engine was turned off. this would happen each time the vehicle was driven the day prior service. also prior and during the warning light incident there was a rattling like noise in the dash area. when i took the vehicle in for service they found a short and replaced the clock spring. i ask the service advisor if it would have caused a problem with the air bags to work properly and was told that it could have caused a malfunction of either not working when needed or prematurely inflating. *nm

January 2005 after owning my 2005 town and country for only 6 months the air bag light came on. i took it to the dealership where i was told that the sensor was bad on the passenger side and i needed to leave my van at the dealership because it was unsafe to driver due to the fact that if i were to get into an accident the passenger airbag would not deploy. january 2, 2006, i just had to take the van back in for the same thing. this time i had to drive it all the way back from florida with the airbag light on. they had to replace both sensors this time. january 13,2006 i was on my way to chicago from my home in michigan and the air bag sensor is again coming on, less than 2 weeks after having it fixed! the other problem i have had with this van is the wiring the operates the power sliding doors. i have had to have the wiring assemblies replaced, once on each side. *jb
