Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

I pushed on break pedal and it went to the floor. found that the brake line going to passenger side front caliper was worn thru as if something had been rubbing it. the pressure from me pushing on the pedal caused the brake line to burst at the place that it was rubbed thru. i purchased a new brake line at a local auto parts store and had to replace all the fluid in the resevoir because it all leaked out through the hole.

I own a 2005 chrysler town & country which was purchased new in april of 2005 directly from a dealership . the car has 33,600 miles, i was recently told after a brake inspection my rotors need to be replaced but the pads still had 5k miles left on them. i have never had a problem like this where the rotors wore out faster than the pads. i believe rotors are defective and should be recalled for safety reasons due to premature wear. the dealer told me this is normal wear, i disagree and will not purchace another chrysler product due to this additude.

In october 2008 my left rear brake line appeared to have been cut and was reported to police. however they were uncertain if that was the case and i have pictures of this incident. it was replaced at that time and again today - almost 14 months to the day later and about 12,000 miles later, the very same brake line broke while i was driving and i came within inches of rear-ending someone. after speaking with the service provider, it was determined that in his mind it is a very bad design and a huge safety hazard. i again have pictures and the part in question with me. *tr

Front brakes overheated due to calipers sticking. rotors etc. replaced. 4 months later pedal vibrations takes me back to the non-dealer shop and rotors are warped from brakes overheating. everything replaced under shop warranty. 2 months later - same thing - shop is now going to replace the parts with chrysler parts instead of aftermarket ones. after reading 15 similar complaints in this database - makes me wonder about this being a faulty design. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chrysler town and country. on several occasions, the abs indicator would flash and fail to turn off on the instrument panel. the braking system has not failed. the dealer stated that the fuse needed to be replaced and they repaired the vehicle. a couple of weeks later, while driving at an unknown speed, the indicator illuminated again and failed to dim. the vehicle was returned to the dealer, but they found no failures. the mechanic stated that the illumination of the abs indicator did not necessarily mean that a failure was occurring. the vehicle has not been repaired. the contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the failure mileage was 15,000 and current mileage was 42,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chrysler town and country. the contact experienced issues with his braking system. he noticed that the proportional valve was faulty and there was 100% braking power on the front wheels, and 0% braking power on the rear wheels. subsequently, the brakes were dangerous in wet weather. he took the vehicle to the dealer at least four times, but the failure continued. the dealer replaced the front brakes, but never inspected the rear brakes. due to the failure, the disc pads and calipers also had to be replaced. in addition, there was no abs in the vehicle. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 32,240 and failure mileage was approximately 9,800.

Re: 2005 chrysler town & country (touring model) -- on 4/27/06 i entered uniontown, pa via us rt. 40--- a steep grade which i have traveled frequently in the last 20 years using many vehicles including a fully loaded g-20 chevy passenger van (3/4 ton), as well as other chrysler mini-vans---- all previously without incident. this however was the first time i traveled that route with my new 2005 town & country --- and midway down the mountain, the brakes started to feel spongy and i could smell burning brake pads (which at first i attributed to a preceding truck) --- however, on reaching the bottom of the mountain and the stop light in hopwood, the brakes felt quite marginal, and i had to press hard to get the van stopped. i pulled off the road and all four wheels were smoking!! and very hot to the touch. the next morning (prior to unloading) i had the van weighed. (loaded weight = 5560 lb. gvw ---- which is below rated capacity for this vehicle). then i took the van to the dealer to have the brakes inspected.... they found no problem..... but i am still having 'pulsation and spongy' brakes when traveling any steep grades ----- never a problem with previous mini-vans. *nm

I have a 2005 chrysler t & c w/ 17k miles. heard grinding metal to metal noise. dealer says needs new front brakes. 1 dealer says all of the t & c's & caravans are coming in for brakes between 15k-20k miles. another dealer says shouldn't need brakes until 26k or more. chrysler says, sorry, we have not heard of this defect, so we will not cover it. when asked, so you are not receiving reports of these vans needing brakes so soon? their response is no. dealer says they have called chrysler about this many times, but chrysler will not cover it, so the dealer has decided to tell customers needing brakes this early on vans is normal maintenance because the vans are so heavy. bottom line-dealer is charging me $352.98 to replace front pads & resurface rotors. chrysler will not compensate. *jb

1-reported vibration in steering wheel between 20-50 mph [2-possible exhaust leak, i was getting sleepy after 20-30 min drive time, i use recycle mode on a/c due to having asthma [ 3-reported noise from the muffler/exhaust area[4- a/c compressor makes a laboring noise [5-vibration and a growling noise in rear suspension, axle or transmission[6-transmission seems to slip or jerk into and out of gear between 15-45 mph. service department could not duplicate any of my concerns but by the same token my mileage out was the same as my mileage in so i'm not sure it was even driven. three[3] days later i came in and ask for someone to drive with me and the technician was able to hear the noise before we had gone a mile, at that time he thought is was just a loose spare tire but when i came back that afternoon i was told it was the catalytic converter but there was not one in town and as soon as it came in it would be repaired. it was supposedly order on thursday jan 19,2006 and received on jan 26,2006. catalytic converter was replaced on jan 27,2006 as well as exhaust manifold gasket. [7-on this date i also reported on jan 26,2006, when i was braking to slow down to turn right the car engine surged forward and almost lost control of car-nothing was listed on the service copy as cause or what was tested for the engine surging when braking.[8-rear brakes have crystallized and need to be replaced at my cost. am getting other prices at this time. *nm

2005 chrysler town & country van was serviced for scheduled lube, oil, oil filter and air filter replacement at a chrysler dealership. a chrysler service rep. approached me in their waiting room to inform me that the oil, oil filter and air filter service has been completed but there are additional items that needed to be addressed. additional services needed include: tire rotation, wiper blades replaced, front brakes, sway bar links and power steering rack replacement. this vehicle was purchased new and has only driven 34,500 miles. the chrysler service rep. explained it all as best he could. the cold weather has caused the power steering rack failure to occur. the brakes are needed because the front brakes wear out first. no mention of the tire rotation, but; the sway bar links are noisy when driving the vehicle onto the lift in the service bay. the tires on this vehicle are goodyear integrity all season tires rated for 50,000 miles of tread life. the rear tires (after rotation) are worn excessively and approaching an unsafe tread wear pattern. the front steering components are failing and are causing this wear. the tires have been rotated as recommended by chrysler. the power steering rack is defective and the front brakes are insufficient. this vehicle drives 5 days a week on 45 - 65 mph. paved roads. *tr

My wife purchased a 2005 chrysler town & country in february of last year. it has 17,500 miles on it and two days ago my wife told me it was making a horrible noise when she applied the breaks. i drove the car and noticed that the noise and vibration was coming from the front left driver side. i looked at the rotor and noticed large abrasions that the caliper had made where it was apparently failing to release from the rotor. the other side had no such markings. i took it into a local place around the corner to get an estimate. the mechanic looked at the odometer and said, you need to take this to the dealer. this is not normal wear. you have one side that is maybe 65-70% warn and the other side which is completely gone and the caliper is locking onto the rotor causing these scaring. he went on to tell me that he knew of three other people who had similar problems with the brakes on new t&cs. i then made the trip (slowly) to the closest dealership whom had informed me on the phone that they had never heard of a front brake problem on the t&c that wasn't from just normal wear. they told me that their master brake technician looked at it and said that it was normal because my left side is closer to the master cylinder. i asked them to explain how one side could be completely burning into the rotor while the other side was only 65-70% worn. i was told it was normal wear & tear over and over again, along with the fact that they had a front brake kit special for only $299. i have one mechanic who was honest enough to tell me that he felt there was something wrong with the brakes that had caused one side to disintegrate instead of just fixing it and charging me for it, and another master technician telling me it is normal wear, here is a $299 brake kit quick fix. if chrysler can honestly tell me that their brake pads are supposed to wear out in 17-20k miles and that the fact that the caliper locked up is normal then i am opening a brake repair shop. *nm

From day one of owning this vehicle the brakes squeal in turns and when first starting and backing up. i did not complain to chrsyler until i had 13000 miles on this town and country and then they charged me for a brake job and turning down the rotors. evidently they have a serious brake design problem and they are just sticking their customers with it, most likely a caliper problem. when i called to complain the woman i had to talked to was ignorant to these problems. *tr

2005 chrysler town & country, touring model. vehicle has numerous problems with front end suspension system. front brakes were replaced at 35k. tires were replaced at 33k because of wear on front tires. rotors were redone at 26k. sway bar links and bushings were replaced at 35k. also, a critical bolt on rear suspension was missing when vehicle was purchased. *tr

Brakes periodically squealed. at 18,000 miles i had them checked. the rear pads were worn and had to be replaced. i was also told that after turning the rotors, there would not be enough metal left on the next future brake job to turn them again. also, the brakes started pulsing after rear replacement. they had to turn the front rotors to correct this problem. there is something radically wrong with the brake design on the 2005 town and country as it is very premature for pads to wear out at 18,000. to compound this problem, it is ridiculous that i will have to purchase rotors on the rear for the next brake job. *tr

At 24k miles my wifes 2005 town and country van was making a loud grinding noise from the front right wheel. the pad was digging into the rotor. when i took the van to the dealer i heard what i expected. the service manager told me this was not under warranty, pads and rotor are wear items. he said my wife must be hard on the brakes. i told him she is the same driver who drove a 1996 ford windstar van, and the first set of pads were replaced at 52k miles. my second complaint was the amount of brake dust on the wheels. the solution was easy. i purchased a two new domestic front rotors and replaced the pads both front and rear with akebono ceramic pads. the van has 40k miles with no more brake problems and the brake dust is gone. i question the quality of the brake pads chrysler is putting on this vehicle. updated 01-14-08. *kb updated 12/12/07

*nm

Right front brake pad worn to metal at 26,000 miles while the left front had 50% life. chrysler refused to cover as a warranty item. service manager claims this wear pattern is normal. *jb

2005 t & c limited - 16k miles....no signs of trouble until last week, when an obvious grinding noise became apparent in the right front. checked the right front rotor, and abnormal grooving and gouging was evident - however, left front rotor looked fine, and hadn't noticed any noise emanating from there. led me to believe there probably was some sort of design defect with the right front brake system. long story short - dealer says metal on metal both front brakes - need to resurface rotors and replace brake pads, plus bleed the brake fluid, to the tune of $360 - warranty won't cover, as brakes only covered to 12k miles. my 2002 t & c didn't need any kind of brake service up to 40k when we traded it in. friend who had same make/model minivan (2005 t & c) had to replace brakes at 20k. one service manager in small town wisconsin said i haven't had to replace brakes prior to 35k in my fifteen years as a mechanic. my service manager said 2005/2006 model year t & c's coming back prematurely with brake issues. obviously, something was changed in the hydraulic system/brake system (downgrade in parts to cut costs?) that has resulted in premature wear and tear on the brakes. also, we had no warning whatsoever that the brakes were wearing down - no squealing...nothing. this is unacceptable! *jb

*tr

Having purchased a new chrysler, town & country minivan, in less than 3 years of ownership, i've had to make numerous repairs that i've never had to make on previously owned vehicles in the same lifespan of a vehicle. the quality of this van has been extremely disappointing. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chrysler town and country. the contact stated that the brakes failed on two different occasions and had to be replaced. for the first failure at less than 10,000 miles, the rotors were replaced at the contact's expense. for the second failure, at approximately 15,000 miles, the dealer replaced the rotors at no charge. currently, the brake pedal is vibrating and clicking whenever the brakes are applied. the speed was unknown. the current mileage was 17,900 and failure mileage was 15,000.

Air conditioning fails anytime the temperature rises above 95. the power on the unit shuts down and will not come back on. the dealership has attempted to fix this problem 3 times. it continues to occur. also, the power locks do not work. i was told they had to re-boot the system. this has also occurred 3 times. brakes. i have replaced the brake pads every 4-6,000 miles. i am on my 2nd set of rotors in 30k miles. brakes need replacing again.. *jb

I own a 2005 chrysler town & country which was purchased april of 2005 directly from a dealership in east hanover with only 150 miles. the car is only 2 years and one month old only has 23,600 miles. by 6,000 miles i needed brakes, pads and rotors replaced. again at approximately 5,000 more additional miles i had to have brakes , pads and rotors replaced. that was 3,200 miles ago and now again the brakes, pads and rotors need to be replaced. i have owned 3 cars prior to this one and never had to replace brakes, pads nor rotors. i complained about this to the dealership, and they told me that there was nothing that could be done that others have complained about this ,and chrysler was notified yet they have not done any recalls on the brakes, pads or rotors. i have never been so disappointed with an automobile as i am with this one. *ak

Front rotors warped at 11,862 miles during normal driving,it was so bad that the steering wheel would shudder valiantly when trying to stop. took to dealership and they resurfaced the rotors at no charge during 12,000 mile warranty, but if it happens again after 12,000 miles a charge for labor will have to be paid. now our van is at 21,608 miles and the rotors are warped again, because the shudder is returning again. i hope i do not have to pay every 10,000 miles to keep the brakes working properly. could this be an engineering flaw on brake size for weight and size of vehicle? *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while depressing the brake pedal at various speeds, the steering wheel vibrated. the dealership turned the rotors. the problem returned nineteen months later and the rotors were turned a second time.

I am the owner of a 2005 town and country van and previously owned a 1998 t&c. brakes and rotors just had to be replaced at 26,000 after hearing a horrible grinding noise and shuttering while braking on hills. service said rotors were rusted and crumbling and seemed surprised- i do not live in a salty area. this failure seems to be a trend on these newer vans. *jb

New van was delivered with service brakes that created vibrations, pulling and shaking. diagnosis was bad rotors. fixed and problem returned. dealer refused any further warranty service. another 2005 (same model) was also purchased and had the same problem. both also have heavy gasoline smell in the interior when filled. *nm

While accelerating under cruise control, the brake pedal becomes unusable and the car cannot be slowed down or stopped unless you turn off the control. this is something you do not have time to do in a panic situation. i have complained about this since day one. the dealership has not been able to duplicate the incidents, and has no information on what may cause it let alone how to fix it. i have had passengers see me use both feet on the brake pedal in an attempt to slow down. please note that this happens while driving within speed limits and under good driving conditions. the latest incident will be reported below. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chrysler town and country. the break warning indicator lost pressure; therefore, the warning light did not indicate that there was a failure and caused the driver to crash. there were no injuries. a police report was filed. the dealer replaced the break calipers and the master cylinder. a complaint was filed with the manufacturer and the contact is expecting a return call within four days. the failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 34,000.
