Steering makes noises and rack and pinion is leaking on both sides after 89k miles. vehicle does not pass state inspection because of that. chrysler does not cover the repair although it seems to be a manufacturer defect judging from the number of incidents that can be found here or elsewhere on the internet.

My 69 year old mother's 2005 town and country has been whining for over a year. twice she took it to the dealer in raleigh where she bought it. they said they couldn't reproduce the whine. last week, she was in a town an hour away and had to pull over and have it towed. mechanic replaced power steering pump, but it didn't correct the problem. he says entier rack and pinion system needs replacing. her van has 52k miles.

2005 chrysler town and country. while vehicle was under warranty, brought it to the dealer multiple times for a noise heard when steering. dealership told us that there was no problems. now, car is making a much louder noise and we are being told that the power steering rack needs to be replaced at a cost of $1300. after researching online, it is a definite problem with this model year and a recall should be issued by chrysler and these faulty steering columns should be acknowledged and replaced by them. i have three small children and do not have $1300 to put into this lemon of a car that chrysler should have fixed when i initially complained about the problem when the car was new.

I own a 2005 t/c about a year ago whining noise noticed when cold go away after warming up did not think much of it. started up again this winter check the power steerig low filled up improved steering, then noticed leak in driveway went to garage told have to replace rack power steering about a $800 job. checked out online and found a lot of similar complaints so my question is when is chrysler going to step up to the plate with the recall

We own a 2005town & country touring, with 52,000 original miles. took it in for scheduled maintenance and an oil change this morning (it's last service was about 4 mos. ago at around 43,000 miles). the service manager said the technician noticed the power steering fluid level was low and upon inspecting the bushings noted a leak which he attributed to the (rack and pinion steering assembly). the service manager said that the rack and pinion assembly will have to be completely replaced, estimated cost $800 parts and labor. i've done some research and apparently this is a problem most owners are having.i was alarmed to learn that there was a several month back order on these assemblies with in chrysler. i smell a rat, there's either an impending recall or perhaps a class action lawsuit brewing here. they have people waiting for this part (back order) because is such a huge problem. go to [http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f172b27/0] so you can see some of the people with this problem. please advise jj lopez

I own a 2005 chrysler town & country which ive put about 30,000 miles on give or take. recently over the past year ive experienced issues with the power steering. my belt broke when arriving at an airport parking lot, stranding my vehicle with my father in law. since then ive experienced issues with it, noises, slippage when it gets water from puddles on it, etc. ive looked online for help and find many similar issues with the belt slippage, as well as problems with defective power steering pumps, rack & pinion, etc for this vehicle. chrysler does not have a recall on it nor sees it as a problem, disregarding the many people who have and complain of this issue. this is a highly dangerous issue as when the power steering goes out of your vehicle you cannot turn!! had this ever happened to me, with my children in the car driving down the road i am sure this would have resulted in injury to us or innocent bystanders. this needs to be looked at and addressed. i have been told that if it is my pump im looking at a cost of over $700, if it is my rack and pinion over $1400, the belt replacement cost me $200. and according to others, even when its fixed they still have problems! i now avoid driving in the rain for fear i will lose control without steering, which is hard as our car is the only one in our household and i commute my husband to and from work, as well as my daughter to and from school, all the while with a 4yr old in the back seat.

My 2005 town & country has been leaking power steering fluid for the last couple of years. a mechanic just told me that the rack & pinion needs to be replaced, estimate of $1000. my van has 67,000 miles on it, but this problem has been going on for a couple of years. my car was at the dealer a couple of years ago, and they told me they added power steering fluid, but never said anything about it needs to be replaced. of course, at that time, it was still under warranty. makes me feel like i was deceived. my mechanic said this happens often with this van. why hasn't this been recalled yet? this isn't something that should need to be replaced.

In order to continue driving my chrysler town and country lx, i will have to pay close to 1000.00 to have the steering rack replaced. if i do not get this expensive repair, i risk having no power steering while i am driving myself or my family around. this could be very dangerous if i am on the highway and suddenly have to adjust my speed or position when there are other cars traveling at high speeds. i went online to research this problem. what i found is this is a serious problem with the 2005 and 2006 chrysler town and country vehicles. there are many other cusomers who have had to have this part replaced in their vehicles. therefore, it is a defect with the chrysler town and country and not a condition of normal wear and tear. i made a request to chrysler to help with the repair and my request was denied. please force chrysler to own up to and reimburse their customers for this defect. this money is coming from my much needed vacation fund. my husband is deployed and my three children and i were looking for a chance to vacation near family this summer. iinstead we will be spending it locally because i have had to put my money into a poorly designed vehicle. please make them recall this part. thank you.

My 2005 town & country van began making a humming noise when the steering wheel was moved. i was told that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. this vehicle only has 52,000 miles. i have been told by numerous people that this should not happen in a vehicle with such low mileage.

Power steering whine developed. steering never subjected to rough service. mechanic discovered low fluid and leak in steering rack. rack had to be replaced at a cost of $820.00 for parts and labor. loss of power steering definitely safety hazard. obviously a design flaw. steering rack should outlast the vehicle. *tr

Upon hearing a noise while driving, i checked under the car and noticed a lubrication seal was no longer performing its function. my local mechanic inspected the control arm and related ball joints and informed me the control system was good at this time, but the steering rack was leaking and would require replacement soon. since i only had about 64,000 miles on my 2005 town & country, i was surprised especially since i had not had this type of failure in the 40 plus years of car ownership, exceeding 100,000 miles on each car. rich in chrysler customer assistance informed me the town & country does not have an historical problem with the power steering rack & pinion; thus a recall to fix the problem is not necessary. all that is required to show the stance chrysler is taking is false is a simple internet search and a search on the nhtsa website. there are numerous complaints regarding this very serious problem. chrysler should have recalled all town & country

This complaint is in reference to a 2005 chrysler town & country minivan. the approximate mileage is 67,000. upon noticing what appeared to be a fluid leak on the ground in my driveway, i looked but could not find the source of the fluid. after a scheduled visit to a local chrysler dealer repair center, i was told that the power steering pump/rack & pinion would need to be replaced at a cost of roughly $1400. this is ridiculous - in all of my years i have never seen a failure of a major steering system in such a short period of time. after researching complaints online i have found that many other owners have experienced similar problems with this same vehicle. what can be done to force a safety recall on this product?? *tr
02/25/2009530001
I started hearing a whinning noise coming from the hood of the van a couple of months ago. the noise was worse when the weather was colder and then the engine light came on. took it in and discovered that the powersteering fluid had leaked out and the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the reason the engine light came on wasn't because of the powersteering but because the egr valve needed to be replaced as well as the brakes (front/back) needed replacing. just had them replaced not that long ago. $2300.00 later. drive away, 1 week later engine light comes on again, now i have an engine oil leak and the emissions exhaust system is faulty. i only have 55,000 miles on this vehicle and it is less than 4 years old, i would expect this from an older car. i have a family of 6 to worry about their safety and i am not very confident in this product that chrysler has produced. it is a shame that they are not willing to step up to the plate and admit their faults. they have lost me as a future customer as well as my family and friends. in today's economy, our hard earned money on a teacher's salary is quickly going down the drain with this vehicle. are they waiting for a death to actually occur before they start to honor a recall? i wouldn't have known about this forum if it wasn't for consumer reports. how many chrsyler consumers are out there who don't know where to look and find out that they have a faulty vehicle, that they really aren't down on their luck. you can be sure, that every chrysler owner i come across, i will definitely share this information with. *tr

Like thousands of other owners of a 2005 town and country van, the rack and pinion steering and the power steering failed at 34,000 miles. this cost $1450 to repair. most fail around 30,000 to 40,000 miles according to what i have read here. the car got so you could hardly steer it. i am sure this has caused many people to wreck, but i was able to get it to a repair shop before i wrecked. this is a scandalous, sometimes fatal defect that has been reported thousands of times, but no recall has been issued. the problem was so prevalent that replacement parts were on back order for months, but rebuilt parts are readily available now since so many thousands have been replaced. as far as i can determine, the newer models also have this defect. *tr

Purchased a used 2005 t&c van from a local dealership. took it to the local chrysler dealer to have oil & lube service. mentioned that my brakes were a little squeaky, please check them. the vehicle has 41,600 miles and i am the second owner. was informed by the dealership that my rack and pinion was leaking and causing the noise and needed to be replaced....to the tune of $800 plus tax. i have been researching this since i got home and have seen there are many, many complaints exactly the same. this is so obviously a defect that even a child could see it. too many vehicles with the same complaint. chrysler needs to replace these units under warranty. *tr

We use our 2005 chrysler town & country for 2.5 years. we purchased the van used with roughly 25000 miles on it in july of 2006. we now have 77000 miles on it and now the front end makes a clanking noise while going over bumps and the is a whining grinding like sound underneath the hood close to the dash. it is worse with cold weather and when the stirring wheel is turned completely in either direction. i did an internet search and found a blog forum at townhall-talk.com. everyone one on this particular blog had t&c vans and had the same problem i have experienced and dealers have said the rack and pinion needing replacement for roughly$850.00 plus. i have not had the problem assessed (will be today). our warranty is expired and now we are having problems. sounds typical right? if chrysler t&c vans all seemed to have the same problem with the stirring system. i read about many different dealer saying that they replace many of those racks and the parts are on back order. if the parts are on back order that should be a sign that there is an issue across the board and there should be a recall. in these trying economic times people don't have money to spend on crappy made parts and chrysler cant afford anymore negative publicity either. something needs to be done! *tr

Whining noise when driving my 05 town and country minivan. the problem started a little over a month ago. took the vehicle in and explained the problem to the dealership service department. the man asked to look under the hood. he told me that it is a common problem for the rack and pinion steering to go out on the town and country van and that my steering fluid was low so that might be the problem. if the people at the service department are used to this problem, i feel that a recall should be issued. there are numerous message boards of people having the exact same problem as well. the vehicle isn't even 4 years old yet and has 50k miles on it. i feel like a $1000.00 repair on a known issue is ridiculous when the car is that old. *tr

At about 45,000 started noticing a groaning noise from the steering. i've already had some of the front end parts replaced at about 30,000 miles on the 2005 chrysler minivan that should never have worn out. however, it started making a groaning noise and i noticed that the power steering fluid level was low. refilled that and it fixed it for about 5000 miles. it's starting it again. i had a 2001 dodge minivan and it did the same thing at 140,000 miles and required a replacement rack and pinion. i'm hoping at 52,000 miles on this, it doesn't need it now. how discouraging. *tr

Chrysler town & country 2005 steering developed a noise and our mechanic identified the steering reservoir was required to be replaced under a manufacturer service bulletin. this was completed and about two months later, the rack and pinion was diagnosed to have a failed seal. the vehicle has 67k miles on it, which are family commuter miles. the reservoir cost over $200 and the rack is going to cost about $900. this is a manufacturer product deficiency and should be covered under a recall. as others have posted, the manufacturer should cover this failure. *tr

My vehicle began making a slight whirring or grinding noise in june 2008. i noticed that it felt like the car was pulling to one side and it seemed difficult to steer. i took it into the dealership thinking it might have something to do with just having our tires balanced. they said the rack and pinion steering needed to be replaced. at that time we had about 40,000 miles on the car, and feel that is way too early for such a replacement. this 2005 chrysler town and country has had nothing but problems! (right sliding door, seat belt, gas gauge, air bag sensor, electrical problems.) *tr

Vehicle steering rack and pinion bad. i bought this vehicle new/used. the first time i drove it home it started to whine when braking and turning the wheel. the steering gets very hard at times, also now makes popping noises and feels like the wheels are coming off. my mechanic said has a bad rack and pinion. there are numerous amounts of claims on this vehicle for the very same problem, but still no recall. i feel for my safety and i can't afford to have this repaired. chrysler still hasn't issued a recall for this matter. my mechanic said it is definitely a safety issue. see website http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f172b27/26 for the 50 or so complaints for the same thing. my vehicle has 42,000 miles on it and it is out of warranty. when it was in warranty they told me there wasn't a problem. help!!!! *tr

Brought vehicle in for routine maintenance and was told that i needed the steering rack replaced. purchased the vehicle a little over a year ago with a 1yr unlimited miles extended warranty due to the fact that it was returned under the lemon law for a different matter. considering that vans are more of a family orientated vehicle i find it odd that there hasn't been some type of recall on this. have been to several different internet forum discussions and it is just amazing how many people are having this same problem. the vehicle had roughly 46,000 mi. at time of discovery. there weren't any noises or anything out of the ordinary that would have suggested that there was something amiss. not sure how long driving like that, which worries me with children. *tr

Failed steering rack on chrysler van at 43,000 miles. pa vehicle inspection issue required to be repaired. rack leaking oil which drips onto hot exhaust system pipe. van becomes difficult to steer at times. chrysler corporation refused assistance although dealer service representative stated huge problem exists with many backordered steering rack systems for these vans and is considered a manufacturing design and quality issue. chrysler, however, leaves the financial fix to come from its customer without assistance. no safety recall which is incredible! *tr

2005 chrysler town & country van was serviced for scheduled lube, oil, oil filter and air filter replacement at a chrysler dealership. a chrysler service rep. approached me in their waiting room to inform me that the oil, oil filter and air filter service has been completed but there are additional items that needed to be addressed. additional services needed include: tire rotation, wiper blades replaced, front brakes, sway bar links and power steering rack replacement. this vehicle was purchased new and has only driven 34,500 miles. the chrysler service rep. explained it all as best he could. the cold weather has caused the power steering rack failure to occur. the brakes are needed because the front brakes wear out first. no mention of the tire rotation, but; the sway bar links are noisy when driving the vehicle onto the lift in the service bay. the tires on this vehicle are goodyear integrity all season tires rated for 50,000 miles of tread life. the rear tires (after rotation) are worn excessively and approaching an unsafe tread wear pattern. the front steering components are failing and are causing this wear. the tires have been rotated as recommended by chrysler. the power steering rack is defective and the front brakes are insufficient. this vehicle drives 5 days a week on 45 - 65 mph. paved roads. *tr

Currently this vehicle has approx. 18,000 miles. has been to the dealer 4 times with a 5th visit coming soon. chrysler should give away complementary cots and pillows to new car customers so that they can sleep at the service departments at dealerships, especially the union shops that don't work on saturdays (and seem not to care about the vehicle in the first place). 1. broken forward engine mount, 2. loose sway bar/sway bar mounts replaced, 3. high pitched grinding noise on cold startup (maybe the starter but since it never does it at the dealership i'll never know for sure), 4. cruise control does what it wants to (set it to 55 mph, it can actually go down to 51 or up to 59 depending on the terrain, dealer says it's normal), 5. power steering (red) fluid is leaking, now there's a surprise! and finally 6. the driver's side window makes creaking noises when it's going up, i know it's not a safety issue but it is annoying. i should have forked over the extra cash for a sienna or odyssey minivan, you get what you pay for. this is my first and last chrysler. *jb

I purchased a 2005 chrysler town & country touring edition brand new in july of 2005. during december of 2007, i noticed a slight hum under the hood during startup. this sound eventually kept getting louder and lasting longer. this sound is more drastic during turning of the steering wheel. i had the vehicle inspected by a chrysler dealership service center. they said it was due to a leak in the rack of the rack and pinion system. they said that the whole rack and pinion assembly needs to be replaced ($800+). they also said that is the system fails further, it could result in loss of steering (during driving!). i have seen a lot of complaints for the same exact issue. my vehicle has 37,000 miles on it (warranty expired at 36,000). this is definitively a recall issue. steering systems should not need replacement in less than 3 years and 37,000 miles. *tr

The 2005 chrysler town & country made a whirring noise at start up and lasted for several minutes until the vehicle warmed up. asked dealer service rep to check out the noise. i was told there was a steering fluid leak in the rack component of the rack (steering component) and it needed to be replaced at about $800. service rep stated that it was a common problem but there was no recall on the part. service rep said that if it was not fixed it could result in a steering failure and needed to be replaced. i authorized the dealer to complete the work. this has been a one owner vehicle with regular service and only about 70,000 miles. *tr

I started to hear a low roar (not unlike turning the starter while the car is running) coming out of the right front of the van, usually upon starting, usually intermittent, but sometimes briefly while driving or turning, and sometimes when starting the van, the noise would continue until the engine was shut off. took it to the mechanic who diagnosed it as a rack and pinion failure, with fluid leaking out, which he says they would not usually see in this young a vehicle. mileage = 53,000. he wanted me to call the dealer to see if they knew about the problem, or if the repair would be covered. the dealer claimed to have no knowledge of this issue at all. i have researched and now see that this has been a recurring problem for this van, and chrysler should own up to it and repair. this van is not even four years old, has not been in any accident or driven abusively, and this kind of a failure must indicate a defect in design or materials. i am now looking at a very expensive repair bill. *tr

My 2005 town & country had been making a whining noise for last month. the noise will increase as the accelerator was pushed, but noise disappeared after the car had been driven for 5 - 10 minutes. mechanic found that the power steering fluid was really low, filling the fluid to the correct level fixed the noise problem. upon inspection, it was found that the rack has a leak. it seems like this is a common occurrence in these vans, i believe this should be investigated and possibly a recall should be done as this is an expensive repair. *tr

Rack & pinion on 2005 chrysler town & country. a noise when turning steering. was told by dealer it was a problem with the 2005 vans and was not being covered. was told it would be around $750.00 plus tax to fix. if there are this many problems with the vans, chrysler should fix them as a recall. was told by another mechanic to put an additive in the power steering and it has slowed down the loss of power steering fluid but keep wondering how safe i am driving it on the highway at high speeds. *tr

It started actually quite some time ago. it seemed that every once in a while i would lose my power steering. once it almost caused me to run off the road and into a cement curb. luckily, i was able to work the wheel around and after about five minutes of trying to control the van, the power steering came back. there has been a noise at the front of the vehicle for quite some time and then i noticed the van was leaking something. i took it to the dealer and they said there was a leak in the steering gear assembly and that it needed to be replaced. they also said that they are replacing so many of them that the part was backordered and they were unsure when they would get one. that was in nov. 2007. it is now april 2008 and i am still waiting. in feb of 2008 i was told they had one for me and i took my van in and then was told that it never arrived and that they told their parts dealer that they needed it immediately because the power steering fluid is leaking onto other parts and can cause problems. it's still been two months since then and nothing. the whole front of my van feels and sounds like its going to fall off at any moment. i have had to refill my power steering fluid every 2-3 days since nov 07 and it isn't getting any better. unfortunately, this is not the only problem i have had with this van. the right cv joint had to be replaced after only 2 years, the air bag sensors went bad and only after i paid to have it checked out to the tune of $70 were they recalled, there was a recall on the rear heating/cooling tubes because of cold weather conditions, the driver side sliding door no longer works as well as the front passenger window. during a terrible rain storm, i had to go through a large puddle and the spare tire was ripped from the undercarriage because it was never sealed properly and the part was defective. both sets of brakes have had to be replaced, rotors redone and the tires have been replaced twice. *tr

Purchased 2005 town and country short wheel base in march of 2004. in february 2006, with less than 24,000 miles started hearing clunking noise in left front end and on cold start there was a squealing noise from engine. took to dealer, identified squealing noise as a leaking rack and pinion gear - said leak was inside since i saw no evidence outside - dealer replaced the rack and pinion under warranty - service writer stated they had similar problems on other t&cs. clunking noise attributed to worn front sway bar cushion - replaced under warranty. service writer said they had similar problems, and thought it was maybe a design flaw. will hold on to the paperwork. *jb
