Defect SummaryChrysler is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 dodge caravan, grand caravan and chrysler town & country vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, iowa, illinois, indiana, kansas, kentucky, massachusetts, maine, maryland, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, tennessee, utah, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, alaska and the district of columbia. the front crash sensors may crack under certain environmental conditions and allow water to enter into the sensor. this can cause the sensor to become inoperative and illuminate the airbag warning light. these sensors were added to enhance the performance of the airbag system in certain frontal crashes.
Consequence SummaryIf the front crash sensors become inoperative, the driver is immediately alerted by illumination of the airbag warning light and the vehicle should be promptly serviced. until the vehicle is repaired, the airbags may not provide the enhanced protection in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryChrysler will replace the front airbag sensors with a new design. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety improvement campaign will begin during june 2010. owners may contact chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
NotesChrysler's campaign number is j38. chrysler has not decided that this is a defect related to motor vehicle safety.however, chrysler has informed nhtsa that it will provide the modifications described above at no cost.

Chrysler will replace the frame rail-mounted front air bag crash sensors in approximately 312,442 model year (my) 2005 and 2006 chrysler minivans (recall 10v-008).these vehicles are equipped with front crash sensors with ultradur brand plastic housings and steel bushings and were built between january 19, 2005 and april 5, 2006.this action covers vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in 27 states (alaska, connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, utah, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin) and the district of columbia.vehicles sold or currently registered outside of these states, approximately 185,000 my 2005-2006 minivans, are not included in the recall.although these vehicles use the same crash sensors and were built during the same period as the ones described above, they experience significantly lower failure rates because of reduced road salt exposure.also, my 2006-2007 minivans built after april 5, 2006, are not included in the recall.these vehicles are equipped with front crash sensors with crastin brand plastic housings and steel bushings and experience significantly lower failure rates compared to the recalled vehicles.nhtsa and chrysler differ regarding the significance and impact of the defect, but in the interest of remedying the affected vehicles expeditiously and to avoid a protracted dispute, chrysler is implementing steps to replace the front crash sensors.based on these actions, the agency has decided that further use of its resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists in the subject vehicles.the agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.select document search for additional information.

I took chrysler to dealer for sensor check--parts had to be ordered--at a later date i took vehicle back to have parts installed--i picked car up in the afternoon and as i'm leaving their lot the airbag light went on--i started to go back and the light went out--i turned the corner and the light went on. i stopped in front of the building and went inside.after about 20 minutes i was told it could be wiring --clockspring.i called chrysler and after going through 2 people i was told chrysler may or may not pay for this,or part of this but i must have it done by the dealership.i asked how dangerous this was and received no answer.i have checked this problem out and it only happens on turns.i'm the owner of a private garage for over 30 years so i know a little about working on vehicles. looks like i'm going to repair a safety problem that should be done by chrysler myself. shame on chrysler !!!! *tr

My airbag light came on so i went online and found out that there was a recall on the sensor in my area. i took my van to the dealership to be fixed. when they were done they told me that is was going bad, but the airbag light was not due to the sensor. it was due to my clock spring in my airbag system. i have not been able to fix it due to the cost, but the more investigative work i have done, this is another issue that is a major problem with this year and make. i have also noticed that it was a problem for past years of this vehicle and they need to make some changes on the product that is being used. *tr

I have a 2006 town and country limited minivan with 49,000 miles on it. the airbag warning light on dash board comes on intermittently. it started at 48,000 miles. there is no pattern to it. i called chrysler to check on recall after reading the plethora of complaints on the internet of this same problem. chrysler said my car is not part of recall and will not assume responsibility for problem thus they will not repair it. i am praying for a class-action suite against the company to force them to take care of this issue. it sounds like every 2005-2006 t&c has this manufacturers defect.
