ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS
07/09/2000 | 05/01/1999
On listed date i was operating my air conditioner unit on my travel trailer while on a camping trip with my family. my family and myself went to bed with the unit running and when we awoke the next morning there was no power inside the travel trailer and the air conditioner was off. i contacted coachmen rv and they had me check the circuit breakers, fuses and external power supply. all of these were operational but there still was no power. coachmen told me the vehicle needed to be brought in for service. later that day i was looking under the sink at the rear of the trailer and i observed a junction box that was before the power converter center. the top of the metal box was singed black. i removed the cover and discovered that the white wire and black wire inside the box had melted and shorted out. this short could have easily started a fire and injured or killed my family. there are no circuit breakers before this junction box that could have tripped. my travel trailer has only been used about nine times for short camping trips. *ak

Problem 1: the engine failure occurred suderside, ca freeway. i had to pull off the nearest off ramp where the engine died. my emergency flashers did not work nor did any of the lights, almost causing other vehicles to crash into mine. problem #2: this happened back in sept 2001 where the firestone tires completely blew the tread while travelling at 75 mph on the 5 freeway in san diego,ca. this required an emergency maneuver across several lanes of high speed traffic. no tread was left on the tires. i contacted ford and they said to contact firestone. three days later, the rear tire on the other side faiiled also requiring swerving off of the road and being stranded then towed to pep boys for emergency tire replacement. *ak mergency flashers did not work either nor did any of the lights. STEERING - LINKAGES

I noticed a loud clunk sound below the drivers seat whenever i hit a very large bump, i.e. railroad tracks, pothole, etc. and could feel a clunk in the steering wheel. i crawled under the mh and started pushing/pulling on the steering linkage to see if a tie rod was about to fall off. when i pushed/pulled on the tie rod between the left wheel and the idler arm, i got a clunk sound. i found i could move the arm about 2 sideways (left/right) at the point of the idler arm. upon checking it out i found the nut on the top of the steering idler arm was loose. after removing the cotter pin, i could remove the nut and idler arm with my fingers. a cotter pin is all that was keeping us from going in any direction it would have wanted to go, without any steering control whatsoever. my family of five had just completed a journey that took us over the chicago skyway, hundreds of feet in the air! to think what could have happened gives me goosebumps. i inspected the idler arm and pivot stud for wear and not noticing any, replaced the idler arm, tightened the nut and installed the cotter pin. i don't know if this problem has come up before but it would not be the type of problem to be noticed if someone wasn't specifically looking for it. with it being so new, a mechanic may not look for loose (worn) steering parts.*ak

While driving home in my motor home i heard a loud noise and banging under motor home. the noise and banging continued until i was safely able to pull over to the right side of highway/freeway and stop. i noted tire had peeled and caused damage under motor home as well as to the body of motor home on the driver's side. the blow out occurred on july 20, 2002, around 4:00pm. allow me to mention that i almost had an accident on march 14, 2002, when the first firestone tire blow out happened. i did nothing except call road service to remove the damaged tire and add the spare. because it was the second incident involving a firestone tire, i called firestone tires and service monday morning. after explaining the july 20, 2002 incident, i was given the telephone number of the claims department in nashville, tennessee (800-356-4644) and spoke to a mr. shawn green who referred me to a. *ak
