Defect SummaryCertain motor homes fail to comply with requirements of fmvss no. 120, tire selection and rims for motor vehicles other than passenger cars. these motor homes were erroneously assigned inadequate tire inflation pressures and inadequate axle weight ratings on the front and/or rear axles as a result of mathematical miscalculations. these motor homes have tire weight ratings that are less than the front or rear axle weight ratings (front axle weight rating:fawr and rear axle weight ratings:rawr) and in some instances have inadequate fawr and/or rawr.
Consequence SummaryAs a consequence, the tires selected for these motor homes do not comply with the standard. in some cases, this noncompliance could cause premature front tire tread wear or tire failure during normal driving. the premature tire tread wear or tire failure could lead to a loss of steering control.

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 country coach magna rv. the contact stated that the power steering was powering off a hydraulic pump, which is driven through a power takeoff case in the transmission. the failure was noticed while driving 15 mph. the splines from the pump to the power takeoff were deteriorated to the point that the splines sheared. as a result, the pump no longer turned or produced any fluid pressure, causing the power steering to become inoperable. he was unable to drive the vehicle without using a lot of strength due to this failure. the contact has not taken the vehicle to the dealer. instead, it was taken to a bus repair facility and was repaired. the failure has not recurred; however, he believes that it was due to a manufacturer defect and a recall should be issued. the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 117,000. updated 07/17/09 *bf on july 6th, the consumer took the rv for an inspection of the pto and spline lines and found spline wear at 20%. it was lubricated and re-assembled. updated 07/21/09. *jb
