FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL

On 6/30/06 we were driving our dodge 1999 ram 2500 diesel pickup, when it suddenly stopped running. my husband was able to force the pickup across traffic and to the side of the road. the pickup had to be towed to a dodge dealership. we now find out that dodge diesels have a problem with its fuel transfer pumps which cause the primary injection pump to fail suddenly and without any warning. this places the occupants at risk since your vehicle has no power, no power steering and no power brakes. our vehicle is awaiting repair at the dealership, estimated at $3,000- $4,000. dodge recognizes that they have a problem with their pumps, since they have a retrofit marketed and in stock at the dealership but they refuse to do a recall. although our vehicle has low mileage, our time of ownership disallows us from warranty work. dodge won't even speak to us. this is a problem that can put drivers at great jeopardy. but dodge will not address it other than at the owner's expense. *jb

I have a 1999 dodge truck with cummins diesel. i would like to report a incident that prompted a concern for myself and my family. as i was on vacation with my family, we were traveling to st. louis for a weekend race. while traveling up a long hill, my truck began to loose power. this grade was a two lane highway, that was moderately curvy. fuel pressure was down significantly as indicated by my added gauge. upon arrival to our destination, i replaced the factory lift pump (fuel transfer pump) and immediately noticed a large difference in power. had the truck actually died during this incident, it would have been nearly impossible to restart, thus leaving a two lane highway blocked on a hill in curves. this caused major concern as it is a high traffic area and many tractor-trailers use this busy stretch of highway. the main cause of failure for these pumps is an incorrect application as described by the pump manufacturer. diamler-chrysler is aware of the problem, but has chosen not to address the concern. thank you for your time in this matter. *nlm

Vehicle stalled while driving. consumer was unable to restart vehicle. consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the injector fuel pump needed to be replaced. consumer informed mechanic that this problem had occurred more than once, and had not been resolved. mechanic notified the consumer that two injector fuel pumps had been replaced on this vehicle, but for the third pump consumer has to pay because warranty expired. *ak
