Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles. if the rubber boots on the lower lateral arm ball joints of the front suspension were damaged during assembly, dirt and water can intrude. also, mmc has added the potential of leaking moisture, which can cause the ball stud to corrode.
Consequence SummaryThis condition could cause the lower lateral arm ball joint to separate, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. this campaign supercedes mmc's previous safety recall campaign, see 99v-066.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the lower lateral arm ball joint for wear. ball joints that exhibit wear beyond the established tolerance will be replaced with newly designed lateral arm ball joints. ball joints that are within the established tolerance will be cleaned and a special sealant will be applied to prevent intrusion of moisture.

 I own a 1995 dodge avenger has same problem as 2000-2003 dodge durango, ball joints. i would like my vehicle included in the recall. *bf the consumer stated the recall should include the control arm assemblies and compression arms because they suffer premature and undue wear by being compromised by the bad ball joint. the consumer had several suspension componets replaced such as the sway bars and sway bar links. *jb

 Tl*the contact owns a 1995 dodge avenger. while driving approximately 4 mph, the vehicle spontaneously dropped on the front passenger side. upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the front control arm fractured from severe corrosion, which caused the ball joint to fail. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and he is in the process of notifying the manufacturer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number 99v066003 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). the failure and current mileages were 142,000.

 While driving at 20-25 mph driver's side ball joint broke, and consumer could not control vehicle. prior to this, consumer had taken vehicle to dealership to get recall repairs done for ball joint problems, but what they fixed was passenger's side ball joint.*ak

 Ball joints on recall in 1999, had checked, did not fix , said was fine. on 4 28 01, ball joints fell out axle broke and tire fell off while driving...contacted chrslyer on recall part, was told mine was fine..just a ware item that needed to be replaced, now there is another recall on said part...chrslyer refused to fix mine in may of 01...now the same part i just had fixed is on recall..i spent a lot of time and money getting my car fixed and body damage has not been completed..my complaint is...chrysler is at fault and should be held resposible for this entire situation. *ak

 Consumer received recall notification for ball joints, repair of ball joints was done before notification went out, consumer was denied reimbursement by manufacturer stating consumer did not meet required conditions of recall, due to the fact that maufacturer contacted the mechanic that performed the work, and mechanic stated that ball joints were damaged due to accident which did not happen, consumer is appealing for reconsideration for reimbursement stating there was some type of misunderstanding, between the mechanic and manufacturer. *jb

 Consumer scheduled recall repairs and took the vehicle to the dealer. dealer stated that they would need to hold the car all day, even though it clearly states on the recall notice that it will take approximately 2 hours for the repairs. consumer would like to be compensated for the car rental that was rented for that day. *yd

 The sealed ball joints on the right, front were completely void of grease. the ball joints popped out during a lane change and caused the vehicle to skid out of control to the right, across two lanes of heavy traffic. fortunately the vehicles to the right saw the incident and took the appropriate actions to avoid collision. the front of the vehicle dropped to the ground, breaking apart the front grill. the right front tire was turned at a 90 degree angle to the car and caused the fender to bend outward. i noticed a popping sound two days prior to incident and in the morning of 12/26/1998 i had scheduled a mechanic to service the popping noise for the morning of 12/27/1998. the incident occurred two hours after i had scheduled the mechanic to examine and repair the vehicle.
