It will constantly over heat, even with full anti-freeze in it. it will get to the h in less then 1 min. the transmission light will then come on followed by the lighting bold in the parentheses. all of a sudden it started having a very loud noise (like a diesel truck) and wouldn't let me go over 25 miles without it getting louder. then i went to turn left to pull over and all the lights came on, went off the heat went from h to c and car steering wheel locked up and car died.. i wouldn't not turn over till 30 mins later.. started having the loud diesel noise and to 3-4 weeks later (today).. still over heats today and still leaks anti-freeze (drains the whole thing in 30 mins). i heard there was a re-call for the 08 avenger in 2012.. i got my car dec 2012 and the dealership still sold it.. when i found out there used to be a re-call i tried to call dealership to find out they went out of business the next week after i bought it. sucks cause im stuck with a broken car and $11k still to pay. *tr

I have had nothing but problems with my car. when i first purchased it 2 months later my shifter got stuck i was stranded at work. after that i have had various problems from the alternator, battery, and compressor going out various times and it is not even over 100,000 miles. i looked up there were recalls on the car back in 07 and 08. the dealership says that they fixed it but i feel like it was not fixed and i had the shifter problem right when i purchased that is the only thing they said they can fix. *tr

I have been receiving electronic throttle control errors for about a year now (lightning bolt between inverted parenthesis). it happens sporadically but seems to occur more frequently. the last episode occurred today on my morning commute to work - 04/04/2012, approximately 0725. the error code will flash and it becomes more difficult to accelerate. when i take my foot off of the gas pedal to decelerate, the car will 'jerk'. so far, i have been fortunate enough to continue driving the vehicle until i can find a place to pull over. usually, i can turn the car off then back on and the error code disappears. the car will drive normally. i am now experiencing these issues 3-4 times per week. this issue is chronicled on the internet with details in different forums. this seems to be an on-going frequent issue that dodge is aware of. from what i ahev researched, the dea;ership mechanics seem to be at a loss on how to repair and suggest different repairs that don't work...unless that is their aim. in a time that people are finacially struggling, these manufacturers need to repair the issues they know about.

My 2008 avenger stalls when accelerating. it seems to happen when it is wet and cold out. it happens mostly when you are at a complete stop and push the gas or when you are slowing down and the accelerate. i have almost been in several accidents due to this happening. i have taken it to the dodge dealership and they said they can't find anything wrong. there is definately something wrong.

I purchased this vehicle from a used car lot a year and a half ago. from the very first day i purchased the car, i had problems which are recoreded with the place of purchase. i was told i could not get my money back. the only remedy offered was for the actual car dealership who sold me the vehicle would fix the problem. the first problem ive had started with the head lights, it then went onto my entire electrical system that gives milage, warnings ect went out. soon after that the alarm system, horn ,and door locking system. there after a pin in which holds the gear in place went out and would not operate. the next thing that went out was the entire air conditioning and heating system. on or around april 12 there was a what looked like a spark near the air conditioning panal. when i removed the panel, there was evidence that there was a small spark or fire that actually melted a switch on the cooling and heating elements. it has yet to work since then. today the 11/29/11 my car completely stalled while i was turning into a very dangerous intersection. this car is a total death trap waiting to happen. unfortunately i am a single mother of 3 children with very little options finacially to do otherwise. i have attempted several times to schedule recalls to be fixed by the dodge dealer and they have not been helpful at all. there is no rental car offered and the estimated time of repair is not feasable. i hope this information will help.

This is a car imported into mexico. manufactured at usa car just started shacking, took it to the authorized dealer/service center who is now arguing it is not warranty despite car had service at 30,000 km and previous maintenances. no reason that a motor may present this kind of big failures with just 30000 km. no alarms shown on controls nor other warnings.

I was driving on a turnpike when i heard a loud explosion and my car started to shake violently and smoke was pouring out of the engine compartment. i slowed the car down and immediately pulled over to the shoulder. i got out of my car and opend the hood of the car and there was a fire coming out of both sides from under neath the engine. i had just had my oil changed the week prior and when the engine caught on fire it was from all the oil that sprayed out. i had the car towed and when the insurance adjuster and the mechanic looked at the engine they said that is was purely engine failure from mechanical reasons and not from a collision of any kind that caused the engine to blow up.

We were driving on the highway about 65 mph when our electric throttle control indicator light along with our engine light came on. when this happened we did not have a spedometer or rpm gauge. all of the lights that are related to the shifter (park, neautral, drive) also all lit up. the car did continue to drive but had less power. we pulled over and turned the car off. we tried to start it again but it would not start at first. the power locks and truck release would not work either. after about 5 minutes we tried it again and everything worked. the check engine light did stay on but the car drove fine. the engine light is still currently on.

I have a 2008 dodge avenger that i purchased about one year ago that i pay $350 a month for. my car started having problems about a month ago. it would not hold antifreeze but no visible leak, the car may have ran hot once or twice since this problem started. there was also a recall on my vehicle for an interlock bracket so on june 30 i decided to take my car to bob caldwell chrysler on morse rd to have them investigate and repair my car (i also had the recall corrected). i told the service tech all the symptoms the car was having so he could properly diagnose my car. he told me i would have to pay $95 to have a diagnostic on my car. after they tested my vehicle i was told it was a small $35 problem that could be fixed by replacing the radiator cap. i paid them for the replacement thinking this would solve the problem. the very same day the car was having the same problems so i called the dealership to inform them. they told me it was a bubble in the system the needed to work itself out and the car should be fine, drive it and call me in the morning if your having the same problem. i took their expert advice but the car did not improve so i took it back to bob caldwell chrysler. they told me they would run the tests again on my car. when i went back they told me there is nothing wrong with you car it pass all the test. they even stated i would not tell you to pick up your car if i felt something was wrong or it would damage your car more( i let him know i had this concern) or if there was something wrong, come pick up your car. i went back to get it on the way home from work the car would not pick up speed, there is thick white smoke from the front and back the overflow container under the hood swell up from the pressure looking like it was about to burst. i was driving on the freeway i could have killed myself.

I have a 2008 dodge avenger that burst into flames all of a sudden when i was headed home from work during rush hour on a city street doing between 25-30 miles an hour. there was no warning when a man started shouting for me to get out of the car. in another half an hour my kids would have been in the car. this is the third time i've heard of this happening with this chrysler made car, yet the insurance is giving me the run-a-round. i'm sure with instructions from chrysler. i need them to pay up, i need to be able to get to work and take my children to day care. i could have been killed cause there is obviously a defect in the engine or fuel system.

At 51000 miles on my 2008 dodge avenger, started smelling antifreeze odor inside the car. eventually the check engine light and electrical light indicator illuminated and the car ran extremely rough and started to run hot. eventually engine would lose power then shut off and not be able to restart for a couple of hours. did not appear to be losing radiator fluid. took to the dealership and found that the thermostat housing, (made out of plastic) was cracked and it was leaking antifreeze from that point. had parts replaced. the part and service was warranted for 12 months/12000 miles. 10 months later, but 30000 miles later, current vehicle mileage 81000, same problem occured again, same parts replaced.

On march 5, 2010 (friday) - approximately 5:30 p.m., while driving on sunrise highway in long island, new york, an indicator light went on inside my 2008 dodge avenger, in the shape of a lightning bolt in my car. literally 30 seconds later, and before there was time to react at all, my brakes stopped working and there was no way to stop my vehicle. i had just about made it to the exit ramp when i realized by looking in the rearview mirror that there was smoke coming from my car. as i had steered onto the exit ramp, i opened the door and saw flames shooting from the underneath part of my car. without thinking twice i jumped from the moving vehicle (which at the time still was going at about 20 mph). i was not hurt physically but was extremely shaken up. another traveler who had pulled up on the service road to help me, informed me that the car was on fire for at least 1/4 of a mile on the highway and that he had been attempting to flag me down. after i had escaped the vehicle, the car continued in a diagonal path toward oncoming rush hour highway traffic. the fire continue to burn and had become very bad, to the point where the entire front half of the car was ablaze. the only thing that stopped the out of control vehicle was a wire fence in the divider between the service road and main highway. the insurance company and manufacturer are currently in the process of investigating. the fire department took at least 15-20 mins to respond which caused the vehicle to become severely damaged to the point where it is now extremely difficult to ascertain a cause. my insurance only covered my car loan and now i am out money for the down payment on a new vehicle. this situation is very serious. there could have been children or elderly persons in the vehicle who could have died. please help me investigate this issue. i consider myself lucky to still have my life and evaluate the situation as having initiated a duty to keep others safe from dangers of the same. *tr

I purchased a used 2008 dodge avenger from enterprise car rental less than a year ago. since then i've replaced the brakes twice, the car stalls out when coming to a stop, delayed response on acceleration & now i cant get the car out of park. i was shocked to google so many complaints about this vehicle. i contacted chrysler dodge recall line and was informed until your office investigate these issues my car and others like me will have to dish out hundreds of dollars or drive unsafe. i was even more shocked to hear this stupid process when the company is aware there is a big problem. there has to be a better way to make these big company's take responsibility before there is a incident, crash or injury. chrysler has made its money so why must hard working us americans that support american made cars have to get hurt or killed to get this moving when there's so many complaints? *tr

The car when on highway tachometer fluctuates and when coming to a stop almost stalls. also today after the defroster/air conditioner was turned off when i came to a stop at a red light the car almost stalled then proceeded to counteract the stall by revving up to at least 2000 rpm's causing me to jump forward into the intersection. luckily no cars were in front of me because it would have caused a crash. *tr

I purchased a 2008 dodge avenger with a little 21,000 mile on it. on 07/29/2008 i pulled into the bank to make a withdrawal. in less than 20 seconds of arriving at the bank drive through i noticed smoke. the smoke appeared to be coming from the bottom of the car. i then pulled out of line to see where the smoke was coming from. after turning the vehicle off. smoke then began to intensify and sparks shooting from under the hood. fire then began to blaze from under the hood and then the entire front of the car was engulfed in flames. the fire department came extinguished the fire. i later search online that the car had 4 recalls dating back to 11/2007 that resulted in fire and 2 recalls after 11/2007. i did not have any knowledge of these recalls until after the fire. i purchased the car in 03/2008. *tr

While stopped at stop signs or lights the car will cut off without warning, you then have to put the car in park and re start the engine. sometimes it flutters like it wants to cut off. this happens at least once a month sometimes more. once you start the car it is back to normal. this could cause an accident. they first learned the throttle control. the next time they replaced the evaporator canister. *tr

Loss of complete power while driving. my son's new 2008 dodge avenger loss complete power while he was driving on the interstate today. without warning all electrical and engine power was loss. luckily, he was in the left lane and was able to go onto the shoulder without power steering, there were no brake lights and more than likely the air bags would not have deployed. if he was in the center lane this could have been a much more serious situation. my nine-year son was also in the car at the time. i cannot imagine a more serious situation to be in driving 70 mph and having a complete failure of engine and electrical power. when it was towed to the dealer, their first response was a component in the car's main computer. i am not worried about the repair as it is under warranty, but please warned owners of this very serious situation and have them check their car. my car was purchased at bob boast dodge in bradenton fl. *tr

I recently purchased a 2008 avenger with the 2.4l vvt 4cylinder and traded in my 2001 dakota with a 4.7l v8 magnum for it. i regret it. i would have don't better off buying a ford. yes, this car gets good highway gas mileage but it has caused nothing but headaches beyond that point. if i drive around town it sucks the gas like no tomorrow. the rpm's are way to high. the car shifts around 3,000 or higher rpm's whether it is warm or cold. when the shifts, it is not smooth. there hard shifts. my fiance's 1999 durango with 135,000 miles on it shifts better than this car does. randomly the car will die when i come to a complete stop for a stop light/sign. there was one occasion where i was driving down one of the busiest roads in our town and it died while i was doing about 40mph. before it dies, it shakes real bad for about 3 seconds then i lose everything. the drivers side rear door handle will not move. it is like it is frozen in place. the handle will not pull out at all. it will open just fine from the inside but i can't do anything from standing outside the car. my doors squeak when i open and close them. whenever i turn the wheel the car groans at me. i've taken it to my local dealer about 3 times. when i told them about the shifting, rpm's, and randomly dying they just said they couldn't get it to act up. finally, two other new avengers came into their service department with the same problems. now they tell me they will look into it. my 2001 dakota with 142,000 miles never gave me this much trouble the entire time i owned it. i had it a little over 2 years and put around 50,000 miles on it and only changed the oil and did a tune up. *tr

A few days after i purchased the vehicle i began hearing a tapping noise in the engine sounds like knocking (bad gas or rod). dealer claims to not hear anything. took to another dealer which heard the noise, kept the car to inspect and repair stating they thought they knew what the problem was. car wasn't fixed i complained because the second dealer admitted to speaking with the first dealer thus the car wasn't fixed. they lied to me and told me it was a federally regulated emissions system that made the car sound that way. dealer #1 offered to set up an appointment with a chrysler rep. then he called back and stated that the rep wouldn't be local for 4-6 weeks. the rep called me and basically stated that it sounded like i just didn't like the car. the dealer would not take the car back, and were rude about repairs. i never saw the rep. now the car is making a rubbing noise in the steering column and the power steering pump sounds like it is going out. i have done everything to try to replace the car but the dealers have put me off so long without repairs that i am stuck with the car. less than 6 months after i owned the car i began seeing commercials for the car only the price was more than $5,000 less than what i was charged. therefore, the bank wants an enormous amount of money in order to put me in another vehicle. the ignition rolls over several times before starting. sometimes i have to attempt starting the vehicle three times. the cd player does not work, it over heats and will burn your hand if you touch the digital display. i have had friends in the community to call me and tell me that my car sounded awful when they saw me in town. additionally i am paying 430 a month for the payment when the girl across the road is having the same problems with her new avenger yet she only pays 279 a month at 11% interest. with all of the problems and the miserable ride this car offers, i can easily compare it to a bicycle a used bicycle at best. *tr
