It will constantly over heat, even with full anti-freeze in it. it will get to the h in less then 1 min. the transmission light will then come on followed by the lighting bold in the parentheses. all of a sudden it started having a very loud noise (like a diesel truck) and wouldn't let me go over 25 miles without it getting louder. then i went to turn left to pull over and all the lights came on, went off the heat went from h to c and car steering wheel locked up and car died.. i wouldn't not turn over till 30 mins later.. started having the loud diesel noise and to 3-4 weeks later (today).. still over heats today and still leaks anti-freeze (drains the whole thing in 30 mins). i heard there was a re-call for the 08 avenger in 2012.. i got my car dec 2012 and the dealership still sold it.. when i found out there used to be a re-call i tried to call dealership to find out they went out of business the next week after i bought it. sucks cause im stuck with a broken car and $11k still to pay. *tr

Leaving home to go to work, started car and noticed lightning bolt indicator light on. shut car off and restarted - light not there. put car in gear and noticed shaking and low idling. attempted to accelerate and was only able to reach a speed of 15 mph. pulled to side of road and shut car off. restarted - no light but still not acceleration past 15mph and car still idling slowly and shaking. pulled back into driveway and left it there. with all the other similar complaints something needs to be done about this. *tr

I have had nothing but problems with my car. when i first purchased it 2 months later my shifter got stuck i was stranded at work. after that i have had various problems from the alternator, battery, and compressor going out various times and it is not even over 100,000 miles. i looked up there were recalls on the car back in 07 and 08. the dealership says that they fixed it but i feel like it was not fixed and i had the shifter problem right when i purchased that is the only thing they said they can fix. *tr

Motor mounts failed and this is the second time it has happened. dealer replaced front mount and said there was a change in the mounts due to problems but did not change the back mount, now the back mount has failed. i think that if dodge had to make a change in design of the mount due to problems they should have had to change both mounts when they changed the front one. this is just so they don't have to spend any more money on a car than they have to. *tr

While pulling out from a stoplight and accelerating up a grade, my 2008 dodge avenger made a loud popping noise and began to sputter and lose power. the car would not go over 10 mph and a lighting bolt symbol appeared on my dash display. i drifted the car to the side of the road and could not move. after letting it sit and turning the car off and on, the lighting bolt image on my dash disappeared and the car could be driven. since then, the car sporadically stutters for no apparent reason and i then pull off the gas fearing a repeat of the above incident. *tr

I purchased a 2008 dodge avenger dec. 31, 2008. it was a used vehicle, the first problem may have been 5-6 months of having the car, it would stall when cranking and had cut off a couple of times when driving in traffic. i took it to the dealer and they claim they couldn't find what was wrong with it. about a month later the airbag light stays on while driving. they fix that. now 10 months after having the car i'm in the car and trying to reverse and can't. the dealer tells me that my warranty just ran out. the part costs 200.00. i can't afford that and i don't think i should because i hadn't even had the car for a year. they told me i couldn't do anything unless i had a warranty. my boyfriend's brother had to take the cover off and now everytime i want to go in reverse i have to push in this red spring in order for it to reverse. please let me know who i can talk to about this problem. it is unsafe for me to drive like this, the console is not there but i can't afford the part right now. *tr

My gearshift suddenly stopped working. i had no previous problems or any indications that it was going to break and leave me stranded at my house. i contacted coffee chrysler in douglas ga and spoke to the service manager. she informed me many people have been having this problem lately. i told her i noticed the complaints on the internet about it and suggested that dodge needs to issue a recall. she informed me, the problem is caused by consumers not engaging the brake while engaging the gear shift. you have to engage the brake in order to engage the gear shift. it cost me $226.22 to repair. i was lucky this had happened at my house. i would have been beyond furious if this had happened anywhere else. i feel dodge needs to fix this problem and pay for it. my car is a 2008. this kind of thing should not be happening. *tr

I was traveling in my '08 dodge avenger sxt w/my son making a left hand turn around a corner & vehicle just turned off by itself w/o warning. went head on into oncoming traffic & went up onto a curb. put vehicle into park & restarted it. the vehicle has to date shut off on us 6 x's. the even when incident happened was we were just driving the car-going home. the vehicle gives no signs, beeps or warnings that it is going to shut off. it just shuts off by itself. it has occurred a total of 6x's so far. i took the vehicle-which is still under original factory warranty-to the dodge dealership & notified the dealership where vehicle was purchased of the issues w/the vehicle. there are also recalls that were not fixed & electrical issues as well as transmission, brake & tires issues that are still as of this date not repaired because they could not duplicate the problem. the dealership had the vehicle for 13 days before telling me the computer needed to be flashed. they did that & car still stalls out when stopped @ stop signs or lights. they told me they do not know why it turned off on me & why the steering locked up & brakes locked up when it turned off. so therefore they cannot tell me that they know why the car has died & that the issue is even fixed! they will not say that it will not turn off on us again. i have researched online several sites (popular mechanics, etc.) & see that i am not the only one this has happened to. i bought this car to be able to have a safe, reliable & dependable car for me & my son. my son has cerebral palsy so i have to drive in this car. i feel that its 50/50 when we get in this car & that everytime could be the time when we're going 50 on the interstate in a turn & the car turns off & we hopefully don't die! i feel that this car has a major defect or flaw in its design somewhere. i love the car but i am scared to drive it now. i do not want me or my son to die in this car! its only a matter of time before someone does. thank you. *tr

I drove my 08 dodge avenger to a friends house, put the car in park, came back an hour later and the car started but i couldn't shift gears. it is labor day, so the dealership isn't open and my car is stuck 20 miles away from my house. there was no warning to the shifter malfunction, everything was working fine and then boom, can't shift. i saved for 2 years to buy a new car and have loved this car from the day i bought it, now i am not so sure because this is a major inconvenience, nevermind the fact that it is not covered by my extended warranty so it is going to cost a pretty penny to have this fixed. i have read many complaints about this same malfunction on the same make, model and year of my car, it should really be recalled.

Transmission keeps slipping; i've had my car in the shop four times within two years and all they keep telling me that it is normal to have to bring the car in and have the transmission reprogrammed
08/24/201056287
I went out to my car to leave work and i started my car as usual. i tried to shift out of partk and i couldn't move the shifter. i tried everything suggested to me and i couldn't find how to bypass it in the owner's manual. (the service tech finally showed me how to do it once it was fixed) i finally called to have it towed to a close dealership where they fixed it. the gear shift mechanism broke. there is a pink plastic piece that holds the spring that activates the shift lock and the hook that actually holds the spring broke. the entire module needed to be replaced costing $69.35 for the part and approximately $129 for labor. after researching the incident online, i found out this is a major recurring problem for the dodge avenger, it could be avoided if the part was made out of metal and not plastic.

After research, this complaint has been filed as early as july of 2008. then very aggressively within the past 6 months. went to leave a park with my 2 daughters friday and could not back out of parking spot due to shifter locking up. searched manual for answer and tried the over-ride switch to no avail. tow driver told me he had seen this problem just days before with a dodge. informed me of the color and purpose of the culprit and after research? lo and behold, complaint after complaint filed for the past 2 years (next month) about the little plastic pink piece that renders shifter useless. this site proclaims to administer safety recalls to support the nhtsa's mission to improve safety on our nation's roadways, your complaint is important to us and if warranted, the (odi) will open an investigation to determine if a safety defect trend exists. well how many people have to be left stranded, miss a days pay, fail to pick up thier children and/or borrow money for this repair (as i have had to do), or flat out be left without transportation. because they have no means for repairs that are due to a factory flaw that everyone (dealerships and o.d.i.) refuse to acknowledge? lets see one of you head out to work, jump in the car to pick up your child and or pack the trunk for vacation. only to discover that you can't shift out of park due to dodge's arrogance. think you see a defect trend then? recall warranted? two years folks! and complaints being filed more consecutively by the day. as for the lifetime powertrain warranty? talk about false advertising and misleading a consumer. buy american? think i'll go with toyota next round thank you. at least they will fix their defect trends. though it appears that they were pushed to do so out of prejudice. dodge can get by with the very same act of ignorance. since the tow man couldn't get my car in gear, when he lifted it for hook up. the front bumper dragged the parking curb and scarred it major.
06/24/201041099
We were on our first day of vacation. we ordered some take out and were going to pick it up. we pulled over into a parking lot to grab our debit card out of our console. we put it in park and then tried to continue on our way when it wouldn't come out of park. the car no warnings that anything was wrong. we ended up having to call our sister and broth in law to help us. our two year old was in the back seat. we had to take her out and put the car seat in our sisters car. then we had to call and cancel our take out. we eventually put the car in drive manually tearing apart the console and driving it to dodge. this was the worst start of ant vacation we have ever been on. with all these complaints about the gear shift locking up and there is no recall yet. seriously, this is hard to believe. now i just blew 300$ of our vacation money. something needs to be done.

2008 dodge avenger sxt shift module locks up stuck in park. many people have this problem. average repair by dodge, parts + labor = about $360. annoying and dangerous.
05/27/201043000
I have a 2008 dodge avenger that i could not get out of park. a mechanic friend removed the gear shift cover and notices a pink piece of plastic that appeared to be broken from somewhere inside the gearshift. after further investigation this pink piece of plastic is what is needed to move the car out of park. this is a dangerous situation and should be considered a recall item.
06/22/201045684
My car was acting fine yesterday and then today when i went to leave for work it would not come out of park. this has never happen since i bought the car two years ago. but i tried everything to make it work and the car still wouldn't come out of park. my sister's boyfriend took the console apart and removed the area covering the gear and there was this pink button that would allow the gear to move. the whole shift assembly will need to be replaced but the problem can happen at any given time without warning. no indicator light or anything to let you know that the part is broken. the car just won't move!!
06/19/201042687
I have a 2008 dodge avenger and was not able to shift the car out of park. using a good deal of force i was finally able to get the car to shift out of park. while doing this i heard a piece of plastic break off. i researched this problem on the internet and found 33 other 2008 dodge avenger owners reported a similar problem. i called a local dealership's service department and the service manager said he was well aware of the problem. he stated that there was a problem with the shift lock mechanism and that the repair would run approximately $300. with so many complaints regarding the same problem, which can result in the car not being able to be driven, i feel that an investigation into this manufacturing defect is warranted.
06/17/201072180
I have a 2008 dodge avenger and the vehicle will not shift into gear from park. there are no warning indicators on the dash indicating a problem and it was operating fine when i drove it to work. it will shift into reverse if forced but will not go into neutral at all. this is apparently a widespread problem according to the website autobeef.

I am having the same issue where my car is stuck in park. i found this site after researching the issue which appears to be quite common. i will have a friend who is a mechanic look at it to see if we can fix this. however, i am concerned that this defect could be a safety issue. seems that it could be quite possible that if it could be stuck in park, it could also get stuck in drive or reverse. please investigate this issue and make dodge do a recall.

My 2008 dodge avenger will not come out of park. this occurs randomly without warning, as i attempted to start my vehicle and leave on june 2, 2010.
06/03/201056000
03jun10 while attempting to leave for work, i could not get my vehicle out of park. i called a dodge dealership and the service department claimed they knew nothing about this. i called a few different mechanics and they both stated it could be a brake safety switch and to try a manual over ride switch near the gear shifter. tried the over ride with negative results. car is still stuck in park. did an internet search and this seems to be a very common occurance, one that it seems dodge is doing nothing to correct. there needs to be a recall issued for this defective part

I have a 2008 dodge avenger and on saturday 5/15/10 my car got stuck in park and would not shift. we were able to shift it manually to get it home but after researchimg the problem i found it is a common problem with this make and model of car, yet there is still no recall. it is not covered under my warranty and dodge wants $50 to just look at it and tell me what it is although i already know whats wrong with it and many other 2008 dodge avengers.

The latch that lets you take the car out of park is malfunctioning that only allows you to take the car out of park by pushing a pink latch button under the shifter.

When my husband went to leave work our avenger (automatic transmission) would not shift out of park. fortunately a co-worker is handy with cars and took apart the gear shift panel and showed my husband that there was a pink piece broken and that he would have to move this piece by hand to shift gears. we were told at oriely's auto parts that this piece is called a shift lock and is not carried at those types of stores. as this happened yesterday (saturday) we won't be able to contact the dodge dealership until monday to find out how much it will cost to repair. after doing online research i have found this to be a common problem on the 2008 dodge avenger.

My 2008 dodge avenger is having a major shifting issue. when you shift the car into drive it will pop out and land into nutural. there is also times that this will be very hard to shift out of park. there is several complaints on the internet that shows the same issues. i called the dealer and was told that they have heard complaints but has not heard of a recall. my car is out of warranty and will cost me to bring it in to get it looked at. please let me know how i can move forward to get this into a recall before this pops out of drive when i am going 55 mph and have an accident.

I purchased the 2008 dodge avenger last year and i've noticed not even once the brakes were newly installed at 20,000 miles you can feeling the braking system through the steering wheel. my main concern is the shifting. without warning after class the shifter would not move from park. leaving me stranded. the engine runs fine, and i followed the manual and other suggestions by the dealer. what needs to be done for this to be taken seriously? this is ridiculous and dodge needs to be held accountable. i have been to many sites regarding this issue. according to dodge they are not responsible. and warranty doesn't cover this issue! *tr

I purchased a 2008 dodge avenger last april, brand new. i have taken care of the vehicle, the lighting on the dash is always coming on, so i am constantly taking it to the shop and they run the diagnostics and they tell me nothing is ever wrong. i had to take the it in for a warranty problem on top of all of that. then this last time i thought it was making a funny noise with the brakes. i took it in and they said i have a leak in my transmission and oil tank, of course the only thing on the dash lighting this time says tire problem. it is such an unsafe vehicle, i ran out of gas in the middle of making a turn in an intersection and my gas light wasn't on and the gage showed i had quarter of a tank. the car has caused me nothing but problems. then to top it off, i got in my car to go home from work and it wouldn't move out of gear and i had to call a tow truck. i have only had the car a year, if i wanted problems with a car i wouldn't have bought it brand new. *tr

Power train: automatic transmission. 3rd time since purchased march 2008. last time a few months ago. driving on wet road this morning pulled car into parking space, will not come out of park. car still under warranty last time had to pay. car only 44,075 miles. last two times took car dodge dealer fro service. *tr

My transmission went out at 56,000 miles. i had taken the car in at 33773 miles because it was not shifting right. they could not find anything wrong with it. i had taken the car in 3 items since purchasing it due to transmission issues. i drive a lot for my job and need a reliable car. i now have to pay for a new transmission. i called chrysler and they will let me pay only $1380.00 but i do not feel i should have to pay anything since i had the car in while still under warranty and they could not find or fix the problem. avengers have transmission problems that no one wants to address. chrysler needs to be held accountable for poor transmissions. *tr

A few days after i purchased the vehicle i began hearing a tapping noise in the engine sounds like knocking (bad gas or rod). dealer claims to not hear anything. took to another dealer which heard the noise, kept the car to inspect and repair stating they thought they knew what the problem was. car wasn't fixed i complained because the second dealer admitted to speaking with the first dealer thus the car wasn't fixed. they lied to me and told me it was a federally regulated emissions system that made the car sound that way. dealer #1 offered to set up an appointment with a chrysler rep. then he called back and stated that the rep wouldn't be local for 4-6 weeks. the rep called me and basically stated that it sounded like i just didn't like the car. the dealer would not take the car back, and were rude about repairs. i never saw the rep. now the car is making a rubbing noise in the steering column and the power steering pump sounds like it is going out. i have done everything to try to replace the car but the dealers have put me off so long without repairs that i am stuck with the car. less than 6 months after i owned the car i began seeing commercials for the car only the price was more than $5,000 less than what i was charged. therefore, the bank wants an enormous amount of money in order to put me in another vehicle. the ignition rolls over several times before starting. sometimes i have to attempt starting the vehicle three times. the cd player does not work, it over heats and will burn your hand if you touch the digital display. i have had friends in the community to call me and tell me that my car sounded awful when they saw me in town. additionally i am paying 430 a month for the payment when the girl across the road is having the same problems with her new avenger yet she only pays 279 a month at 11% interest. with all of the problems and the miserable ride this car offers, i can easily compare it to a bicycle a used bicycle at best. *tr

On three separate occasions over the last six months i have had my 2008 dodge avenger 2.4 liter w/t engine vehicle in the dealerships shop to have the transmission repaired. first, the shifting was very hard and the transmission was bucking and not shifting into gear correctly. the second time, the transmission was not shifting hard anymore but the transmission was losing power and bucking again and the repair shop did a computer upgrade repair and i had a rental truck for two days. upon return of the rental truck, my car, which had a quarter of a tank of gas in it, was returned to me on empty with the fuel light on. the third time i took the car to the dealership repair shop the transmission was still bucking and losing power. this time i dropped the car off and when i returned to pick it up, not only was the transmission still having the same issue after the mechanics changed the torque conversion operation, but i now have a ding in the left rear door that was not there when i dropped the car off. the ding is not that large, however, it has chipped the paint off and the dealership repair shop told me that they were not responsible for the damage due to the authorization signature area where you authorize the dealership to do the repairs. this is appalling! the car would not have been dinged if it were not for all the transmission problems associated with this vehicle. i also have found that the dealership, who told me they would contact chrysler and get a rep involved, did not do so after several phone inquiries to their sales department. this transmission is dangerous and the bucking is only doing further damage to the entire part. *tr

I recently purchased a 2008 avenger with the 2.4l vvt 4cylinder and traded in my 2001 dakota with a 4.7l v8 magnum for it. i regret it. i would have don't better off buying a ford. yes, this car gets good highway gas mileage but it has caused nothing but headaches beyond that point. if i drive around town it sucks the gas like no tomorrow. the rpm's are way to high. the car shifts around 3,000 or higher rpm's whether it is warm or cold. when the shifts, it is not smooth. there hard shifts. my fiance's 1999 durango with 135,000 miles on it shifts better than this car does. randomly the car will die when i come to a complete stop for a stop light/sign. there was one occasion where i was driving down one of the busiest roads in our town and it died while i was doing about 40mph. before it dies, it shakes real bad for about 3 seconds then i lose everything. the drivers side rear door handle will not move. it is like it is frozen in place. the handle will not pull out at all. it will open just fine from the inside but i can't do anything from standing outside the car. my doors squeak when i open and close them. whenever i turn the wheel the car groans at me. i've taken it to my local dealer about 3 times. when i told them about the shifting, rpm's, and randomly dying they just said they couldn't get it to act up. finally, two other new avengers came into their service department with the same problems. now they tell me they will look into it. my 2001 dakota with 142,000 miles never gave me this much trouble the entire time i owned it. i had it a little over 2 years and put around 50,000 miles on it and only changed the oil and did a tune up. *tr

Vehicle was stopped at a traffic signal, automatic in drive, when signal changed, removed foot from brake and car reversed while still in drive hitting the vehicle behind me. this event happened after 5 days of having possession of the car. second event happened 20 days of ownership. again stopped at a traffic light, car in drive, would not move. car has to be shut off and restarted to correct problem. this has happened 2 more times to date. car has been taken back to dealership each time and problem has not been corrected. they can find nothing wrong with the car. i feel this a very dangerous problem, especially with the car going into reverse, while in drive. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 dodge avenger r/t. the contact stated that the vehicle has been at the dealer for over a month for repairs. he stated that the engine has noisy lifters. the vehicle was taken to the dealer four times and they only replaced the lifters once. the manufacturer stated that this is how the vehicle had to be manufactured due to the thermal expander. while driving 65 mph, the transmission engages in an automatic neutral drop. the engine races above 5,000 rpms, which is not recommended. the failure has occurred twice. the transmission also jumped into reverse while driving at low speeds. the vehicle has been at the dealer four times for the transmission. the dealer called the contact and stated that they could not find anything wrong with the transmission, however, they do acknowledge the failure. the transmission failure began in april of 2007 and has continued ever since. the current mileage is 2,500 and failure mileage was 7. the check engine light illuminated, there were broken bolts and studs. the shifter would not return to park. the rocker arms, valve cover, lifters and heads were replaced in the engine. updated 08/08/07. *jb

My car was stuck in park. no warning or anything wrong with the transmission. it had to be towed to the dealership. they replaced a $20 plastic piece under the gear shifter that had broken, $400 and 2 days later i had my car back. this is a leading trend for this model of vehicle and should be a recall.
