| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| It will constantly over heat, even with full anti-freeze in it. it will get to the h in less then 1 min. the transmission light will then come on followed by the lighting bold in the parentheses. all of a sudden it started having a very loud noise (like a diesel truck) and wouldnt let me go over 25 miles without it getting louder. then i went to turn left to pull over and all the lights came on, went off the heat went from h to c and car steering wheel locked up and car died.. i wouldnt not turn over till 30 mins later.. started having the loud diesel noise and to 3-4 weeks later (today).. still over heats today and still leaks anti-freeze (drains the whole thing in 30 mins). i heard there was a re-call for the 08 avenger in 2012.. i got my car dec 2012 and the dealership still sold it.. when i found out there used to be a re-call i tried to call dealership to find out they went out of business the next week after i bought it. sucks cause im stuck with a broken car and $11k still to pay. | |||

| As i was driving down the interstate highway, i heard some wind so i checked window button, i then heard door alarm go off and as i attempted to exit highway on an exit ramp the door swung open!! my passenger had to physically hold it close as best she could until we found a safe place to stop to see if we could identify the problem. we tried many times to close it but could not get it to latch. we scrounged around on the side of the road looking for something to tie it together with to get it off the side of the road and back home! i'm glad my grandchildren were not with me! | |||

| Motor mounts failed and this is the second time it has happened. dealer replaced front mount and said there was a change in the mounts due to problems but did not change the back mount, now the back mount has failed. i think that if dodge had to make a change in design of the mount due to problems they should have had to change both mounts when they changed the front one. this is just so they dont have to spend any more money on a car than they have to. | |||

| While pulling out from a stoplight and accelerating up a grade, my 2008 dodge avenger made a loud popping noise and began to sputter and lose power. the car would not go ovet 10 mph and a lighting bolt symbol appeared on my dash display. i drifted the car to the side of the road and could not move. after letting it sit and turning the car off and on, the lighting bolt image on my dash disapeared and the car could be driven. since then, the car sporatically stutters for no apparante reason and i then pull off the gas fearing a repeat of the above incident. | |||

| We bought this car used a year ago. soon after the ac compressor went out. we had it repaired. then the brakes went out. had them fixed, but they still grind and are not right. had the rotars looked at and fixed, but still not good. then the ac blew again, had it repaired again. then we heard a loud noise when car idling that sounds like a scream. then the ac blew again and now their is a grinding noise in engine and it sounds like a lawn mower. we are very unhappy and wrote to dodge.oh wait this is all following the shifter breaking (pin issue) and having to ask dodge to make this a recall which they did. | |||

| I was leaving work for the day and started my vehicle as usual, but was unable to shift from park to reverse or any other mode for that matter. i at first thought maybe i had not applied enough pressure to the brake or maybe i did not turn the key all the way. i started over, ensuring that i did both and was still unable to shift out of any other mode but park. this has happened almost daily since april 9th, 2012 with the only remedy being that thousands of others have complained and blogged about it online and posted quick fix remedies for the exact same problem. if thousands of other dodge drivers are having this issue, why hasnt a recall been issued? | |||

| Vehicle engine cuts-out or stalls at during deceleration or when stopped at a light, and only on days in which it is raining. i have taken vehicle to dealer with no luck in solving problem. this is a safety concern because the vehicle becomes hard to control when the engine cuts-out all of a sudden losing power to the brakes and steering. vehicle still exhibits symptoms of problem. | |||

| My 2008 dodge avenger has had numerous problems since we purchased it. we have had to replace the power steerin pump twice, the alternator and today 07/16/2011 i couldn't shift the car from park to reverse. i have also noticed that at 55mph, the rear end of the vehicle fish-tails, and whenever it rains or snows, there's always water in my trunk. all these issues seem to be a problem for many dodge avenger consumers and it is an autrocity that these vehicles have not been totally recalled. i highly doubt if i will buy another american manufactured vehicle because i constantly have problems with the american brands. | |||

| 2008 dodge avenger sxt with the 2.7 liter engine with approximately 57,000 miles. the electronic throttle control light comes on (it is a lightening bolt shaped indicator light). this is a common problem on these vehicles from what i am searching on the internet and forums of other owners. | |||

| I have a leaky trunky in my 2008 dodge avenger. my window also stopped working on my drivers side. after searing the internet i discovered many others with this same issue. if an official recall notice was made this would prevent vehicle owners from spending thousands of dollars on repairs that should be made by the dealer. the trunk has been leaky since i bought the card and dodge keeps teelling me nothing it wrong. it also makes my third break light go out i've been issued 3 police warnings for this. i hope i never get a ticket. also, my window is now stuck down and if it rains i will have damage. as for the trunk its also moldy and makes me sick when i getinto the car. | |||

| My airbag light will come on and go off. i brought it into the dealership and they ran a scan on the avenger. they siscovered that the code on the scan was the drivers seat sencer. they have recomended that i replace the airbag which is no longer under warrenty. when i brought to there attentio that ther was a recall on the seat sensor they told me that my car was not included in the recall. so even if i pay to replace the airbag $1000 + and the issue is the sensor my airbag will still not work properly. i have found that i am not the only person who has this issue and is not covered by the recall. my avenger also stall without reson. the dealership scanned it and no codes came up. they reset the computer. this has been going on for a year now. it has happened 6 or 7 times, even in the middle of the interesction. | |||

| I was slowing down to make a left hand turn on 9/18 when, in the middle of turning and while there were other vehicles driving towards me, my steering wheel locking in the position it was in, my brake locked so i couldn't slow down, my gas locked and all the dash lights went off. the car stalled. the only thing i was able to do, was put the car in park as fast as possible and turn the car off and back on. luckily, the cars that were heading right towards me swerved as to not hit me and the car that i was heading straight for was able to move before we had a head on collision. i took the car to the dealership where i bought the vehicle and where i purchased the warranty, and they were unable to diagnose what the problem was. my biggest fear is that i have two small children and have to travel on the freeway next to large semi's and if this happens there, we will surely die in a horrible accident seeing as how my wheel locks as well as my brakes. i only hope that more investigation will be done to prevent that from happening. | |||

| My wife, my mother-in-law, and i all drove my car on friday with no issues. the next time i tried to drive my car on saturday, i could not shift my car out of park. my car is a 2008 dodge avenger. we tried several times, making sure the steering wheel wasn't locked, the brakes were pressed when attempting to move out of park, checked the transmission fluid and checked anything else we thought might cause the issue. after all that failed, i researched a little online and found a forum on customercomplaint.com where several owners of the same vehicle type had the same issue. apparently there is a very small, pink plastic hook in the shifting assembly that allows the shifter to move out of park. not surprisingly considering how small it is, this hook breaks, preventing the car from shifting. on the forum, multiple people complained that the dealerships were telling them this wasn't covered on warranty. my warranty was up, so i used a suggestion from the forum to use a compression spring to hold the pink assembly in place once the hook breaks. not an ideal fix, but it works and only costed me a couple of dollars for the spring instead of the 100-300 dollars involved in towing and having the dealership look at it that others on that forum went through. | |||

| I have a 2008 dodge avenger that i was unable to use as of today. i got ready to leave my house and my car would not go out of park to reverse. i started trying to figure out why. i went to google and found numerous people had the same problem. and whats worse, is that dodge doesnt see it as a problem and has not placed a recall out for it. it needs to be done. its a safety thing. my warrenty on my car is up. i have an extended warrenty but its still going to cost me $200 at least to fix it and i do not have that. i have 2 kids, one who is a diabetic, and i am a stay at home mom. what is it going to take for dodge to get with it and take care of this and make sure a recall is sent out on this?? too many people have had this same problem. | |||

| I have been very very disaapointed with my 29008 avenger.. seems like ive experienced one problem after the other.. the first was the tpms, which a recall was made and that was fixed. 2nd i had to replace the whole gear shift because it wouldnt come out of park... i called the dealership and they advised me that they saw a sigificant increase on those parts and alot of the avengers were experiencing the same thing. 3rd, now the barrings inside the alternator have broke.. and i have to replace the whole alternator itself. we again called the dodge house and they also explained how many request they are getting ref this part and having to keep them in stock continuosly. everyone i know that has an avenger have all experienced all of these same problems.. and my question is at what point does dodge start issuing a recall?? if dodge can call the dealerships and get a talley on all amount of replacement parts they would be suprised and realize that a recall does need to be in effect. | |||

| I have a 2008 dodge avenger that has a defective gear shift. my car was in the middle of the road and i was almost injured trying to get out of the car when i discovered the car would not come out of park after i turned back on. this may not be considered a safety problem to dodge but depending on where your car is when you turn it off it does really become a safety issue. this was the first incident i have had with this problem and i am attempting to get this repaired now. this really has been a pain for me and my bank account!! | |||

| Went togp leave work at 9:30 at night and the car will not go into drive. the gear shifter seems to be stuck in park. had to get it towed to the dodge dealer nearby.i have seen numerous complaints on this issue whie researching it online. | |||

| Ref : dodge avenger 2008 - gear shift module lock up - please look into above issue since this is happening with most of the avengers. the gear shift locks and cannot be released. the whole gear shift console needs to be replaced. the dealer does not want to take responsiblity and it;s very expensive to replace. after furhter research most of the dodge and chryslers vehicles have been having these problems for years. | |||

| The gear shifter got stuck in park. it had worked fine previously without any hitches. we have owned the car since dec. 2009 and never had any problems with the gear shift sticking. then one night it was just stuck. we had to call a tow truck and the guy had to manually put the car in drive so we could get it to the dealer. | |||
